OS 9 video garbled at boot

I got a iMac G4 800, 17" at a garage sale, I clean installed 10.4.11 and made sure to check os 9 drivers at install, Tiger boots great, Classic works great, booting into 9.2.2 is all garbled and unusable, what did I do wrong?, and NO I do not have them machine specific restore discs. I am tempted to say screw it anyway an wipe it again with 10.5,
Suggestions, comments, and well founded mocking are all welcome

Don't get carried away just yet. An iMac G4 with an 800mHz is not officially supported by 10.5. Leopard's installer looks for a processor speed of at least 867mHz to work.
Was the OS9 disk a full retail install disk (white with a big "9") or a gray one from another model Mac? I've heard of such disks giving Classic a useable code source but not allowing regular native booting. Example, a disk from another model Mac may not install the video drivers required by an iMac G4. A retail disk would "look" at the hardware config and select the needed drivers.
The fact that 10.4 and the Classic emulator work suggests that the HD is properly formatted for OS9, reinforcing my concerns about the OS9 CD. Does the Startup preference pave in 19. "see" the OS9 folder?
And remember: it's a holiday and responses are historically slow here during long summer weekends.

  • Video anomolies during boot screen on new iMac

I could not decide where to post this, but I thought it made more sense here than displays as you will see.
I got a brand new Core Duo iMac 17" and when I turned it on initially, the screen was completely garbled. Nothing was legible, it was just fuzzy video. The chime sounded normally. I cut the power and did it again. This time the display was still garbled but I could make out the apple logo on the gray screen.
When it booted into OS X and the initial setup it looked fine. After doing the "transfer your mac" and finishing registration, I shut it down completely and turned it back on twice and it did not exhibit this behavior.
I am not comfortable with the EFI/BIOS/whatever screen looking like this. Is this something that happens with new machines out of the box? Or is it definitely indicative of an issue with the video card or motherboard?
I guess what I am asking is if I should nip this in the bud or not worry about it.

This has yet to occur since the initial boot up, so I am marking it as answered.

  • MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting

Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!

  • Video Mode on Boot - Oracle Linux Server r6u2

Having an issue. See posts on forums but they are very old and with no clues. When our servers boot up, our rack monitor says the video mode is not supported. We do not see anything past POST - no red line across the bottom. Nothing except for the message from our monitor saying the video mode is not supported. We connect another monitor and it also says the same. We boot with that monitor and it comes up OK. We reconnect our rack monitor and we see Linux. Any idea on how to configure the video mode on start up? Or any other suggestions other than replacing my rack monitor?

You can try to change the screen resolution using specific kernel boot parameters
Check the following if it helps:
    linux installation
I recommend to check all the vga cables to make sure there aren't any bend pins, even the ones that are connected to other machines can cause trouble.

  • Video Issues with Boot Camp / WinXP Pro

    I have a MacPro 2.66, Radeon X1900 with a 23" Cinema HD Display.
The problem I'm running in to was the same one I first experienced when installing XP Pro. No video. There was a video signal to the 23" display, but I got nothing other than a black screen.
I found a solution to use a different monitor, as apparently there are some "issues" with Boot Camp and/or XP Pro and the 23" display.
The install of XP Pro went fine on a different (smaller) monitor. It's the post-install that is not working.
I got XP to boot up once or twice and all seemed to be fine.
Now, when I boot back up in to XP Pro, I get a video signal and can hear XP boot up (Nice cozy XP startup music), but I only get a black monitor screen. No video whatsoever. No posting, no nothing.
Granted, I have not done it yet, but I'm sure I can slap on the smaller tube and get XP to boot.
I'm suspecting a video driver issue with the Radeon X1900 and the 23" display, but was wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem and what the solution might be?
I'm probably going to have to wait to see if Boot Camp 1.2 fixes this issue....seeing how there is already an sata issue that needs to be addressed as well.
    Any thoughts?
    Michael

Well, I'm not sure what one should do if another display isn't available. But, I was lucky to have an old 17" Cinema to use instead of the 23" to install drivers with the X1900 card installed.
    I went here...
    https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folder ID=293
... and downloaded their Catalyst Control Center, installed it, and went to "Advanced" to do display discovery. Then I did a full shutdown and restart.
The 23" works now. Though, as others have said, it's black until just before the XP desktop loads (as I assume the drivers load with the desktop).
Aside from it being a pain to get working on XP, the card screams (on both platforms)! There is a slight bit of fan noise which is pretty subtle and only seems to rev on startup/self-test but so far it's definitely worth it. I didn't think it'd be observable outside of 3D apps but with Mac OS GPU acceleration even Tiger seems faster!

  • Blurred video & garbled sound on one end of ichat

I have been video chatting with my son for a couple of years with excellent audio/video. I was using a MAC G4 dual 1GHZ tower. I recently switched to an intel mac mini. I also have a mac book pro 17 inch. Ever since switching to my intel macs, my video is blurred and my audio garbled on his end. His video and audio remains excellent on my end. I am using the same isight camera as before. My ichat bandwidth limit is set at 1 Mbps (I have tried other settings with no improvement). I have a comcast cable connection and have tested down (3138) and up (1530) speeds. I am using an airport express but have tried a direct connection to the mini with no improvement. Strangely, My macbook pro A/V using the built-in cam gives the same results exactly. Quicktime streaming is set on 1 Mbps cable. No changes have been made on the distant end. Any ideas on this?
Mac Min 1.83 GHZ Intel Duo Core   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   512 MB RAM

You kind of lost me there. I have nothing even close to your example of HTTP://myip.dk/. My IP address consists of nine digits. I have no problem connecting to the internet. When I am not using ichat, download/upload speeds are what I have had all along regardless of G4 or duo core. While I don't normally do it, I can use both my macbook Pro and my mini connected at the same time and maintain good internet speeds. When either the mini or the mac book pro launches ichat, then internet speeds suffer and ichat video is blurred. My ISP has never been interested in any device beyond my cable modem. I normally use an airport express but direct connection to the cable modem does not change results.

  • 6800GT wont display video bios on boot

like the post says at first i had the K7N2G  thought it was this old mobo got the delta 2 but still no bios mesage on boot changed the 4oow psu for a antec 550w still no bios measage on boot any ideas card seems to work alright only just break 10000 on 3dmark03 though but get 4500 in 3dmark05.
Also tonight while using clone view on tv the disply becomes garbled after ten mins and can only be fixed using single display mode im using msi latest vga driver should i use nvidia ones instead it will also sometimes freeze or lose monitor detection altogether i think this card was faulty but when i sent it back to shop they said it was good i had to bend the metal colar straight when igot it as it was bent just to fit it in case.

mine never used to show at all
but after messing with various bios`es  for my p.o.v. 6800 ultra i now use a bfg bios and it shows on boot up !
it depends on the bios you use for your card not the card itself i think.
same as boot up flash screens.

  • Video garbled after disk error

Hello. My external firewire disk would not mount and Alsoft DiskWarrior 4 found numerous problems in the directory structure. The disk had been working fine earlier the same day.
I have used DiskWarrior to rebuild a repaired directory but I have not applied any changes to the damaged disk - so far I have simply copied files from the 'Preview Disk' onto my internal hard drive.
The problem I have is that in many of my projects, the video is completely garbled - just large blocks of random colour. The sound is OK however. In other projects (the older ones) it is just the transitions that are affected.
Any ideas? I can't see that the data on the disk can have been physically damaged in any way.
    Many thanks in advance...
    Simon

Yes - 2 others in fact... but I have read there are some known problems with firewire drivers so I am wondering if it may be this. Not sure why it would suddenly start - no changes to system had been made.

  • Updating an ATI video drivers in Boot Camp with Vista, should it be done?

I use Boot Camp on my Mac Pro for games. I play Age of Conan on Vista on my Mac using Boot Camp. I can't play Conan anymore because it is telling me to update my video drivers but I am worried it will effect the Mac side of the computer. What should I do?

The guide on drivers heaven tells you all you need to know, disable the UAC in vista and reboot. Download the ATI driver package which is now 8.6, extract the package and then cancel the install. Use the mod tool and then navigate to the ATI folder and double click setup. It should run perfectly and all is well, I did it the other day with my iMac which has the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT chip. The simple way to say what the mod tool does is that it changes the driver to recognise the apple signature on the chip.

  • No video handshake on boot, no video in media play...

My N900 has stopped playing the handshake at boot up time, it only did it a few times early on, maybe 3 times, but now it never does, and the media player has never played any video, either the '9' preview, or any other. mplayer works fine.
It has been suggested that it's broke, but dmesg does not indicate any devices not working correctly. And everything  else works. The only issue I have is excessive battery consumption.
    Any suggestions.

    whoa whoa whoa..
you bought it from expansys and it is outside of the manufacturers warranty area? Send it back to expansys? that is outrageous..
I bought an N800 from them only to find the box security seal had been cut.. they told me this was because they needed to "check it had the right charger" **bleep**?!
I don't trust them and their grey imports.. unless they specifically said that the unit would not come with a valid manufacturer warranty, I believe you have a leg to stand on..
(recently bought a billion router from them, and the security warranty void if broken sticker broken too.. I don't trust them but they were the only UK reseller)

  • Xserve g5 no video won't boot

we recently inherited an xserve g5, but when I try and start it up, I don't get any video, and it doesn't start the boot process. The 2 rows of blue lights quickly illuminate when the power button is pressed, then shut off. The computer is getting power, as after 5 mins or so the xsg5 sounds like an airplane and it needs to be shut down (we're afraid it's gonna blow
I have tried zapping PRAM (not even sure if this works on xserve class of machines), has no effect. Also tried going into open firmware, this causes the xserve to enter airplane mode immediately.
Also tried reseating PCI cards and riser, as well pulling RAM, unplugging power and pulling battery.
Any other things I can try to get this back up and running...
    Thanks

    Hello!!
I've a Xserve G5, this not have a Video card, so I obtained one (Ati Rage 7000).When I install it in any of the PCI slots, there's not answer of the server. There is no activity in the network, the keyboard does not respond, leds that indicates activity of the server do not follow their normal sequence, nonactivity of the HD and no video.
After one or two minutes, the fans begin to work more hardly, and follows the noise in crescendo until it self goes out (turn off).
The video card is a Mac Edition and work fine in a PowerMac G4. What happens? it is a problem of FirmWare?
    Thanks
    Greetings

  • Video Games with Boot Camp

Is it possible on a macbook pro (the latest model) while running bootcamp (Mac OSX 10.6 snow leopard; Windows Vista) to play video games intended for PC's like say Fallout 3 or Battlefield Bad Company 2 on the Windows Vista side of the Macbook Pro and not have any problems like slower FPS or glitches? I've checked Alienware and Macbook Pro components (processors and graphic cards) and they are both very similar, so the Macbook Pro would run like a gaming oriented system. Is this true?

Well, I don't want to mis-diagnose your problem... but it sounds like a video card hardware issue to me.
I for one have Boot Camp installed on my MacBook Pro. I have 45GB for Windows, the rest for OS X, and not having enough HD space... I have a 500GB Seagate SATA II drive in a Vantec NexStar 3 drive enclosure. Currently, I plug the HD in via USB 2, but I've ordered the eSATA card online and should have that in the next few days. I've also used a firewire 400 external drive, btw.
I've installed Tomb Raider Legend, as well as Half Life 2: Episode 1 on the external. Both games play fine, and other than lag from running the games at 1400x900 with all the options turned onto high... they play perfectly. With HL2, I turned the filtering down to 2x, and that helped some. I've barely played any Tomb Raider, as I've got that on my primary PC... but I'm looking forward to playing Far Cry again (beat the game months ago) on the MacBook Pro and see how that looks.
The MacBook Pro is an AMAZING PC IMHO, as it continues to do nearly everything I can throw at it well. If it isn't working that way for you, then have an Apple representative take a look while it's still under warranty. Hopefully your unit will be fixed soon.
In the meantime, best wishes and have a great night!

  • Z77 Mpower - No video signal on boot - Debug code "Ad"

Hi, I can't get any video signal from my mobo, it seems that it can't boot at all.
I just plugged CPU (i7 3770k), CPU cooler (Noctua NH-D14) and 1 RAM (8gb DDR3 2400MHz), no vga, hd or dvd writer, then I obviously plugged the 24 pin connector from the PSU and the 8 pin connector for additional CPU power.
I have my monitor directly plugged to motherboard but when I turn on my pc, even if fans are working and motherboard leds are on, I still don't have any video signal and on the motherboard I can see the debug code "Ad".
Please can you explain what is happening?
Thank you very much for any advice and sorry for my bad english.

I tried to reseating the CPU and nothing changed, then I reset the CMOS, waited for a couple of minutes, restored the power, and the debug code became "A0", but after about another minute I retried to turn on the PC and the Debug code returned "Ad".
    I'm quite frustrated.
Side Note: For my try I didn't use the boxed cpu cooler, I just installed my cooler without plugging the fan cable to the "CPU fan" pins, i thought it was sufficient to see if my motherboard boots, isn't it?
Update: I tried ro reset bios again and plug change the RAM stick in solt2 with the other one. Again the system was unable to boot but the debug code became B4. After a couple of minutes I tried to boot again without touching anything and the debug code returned "Ad", I can't give an explanation to these apparently random debug codes
Update 2:Now I switched ram slot, from slot 2 I mounted ram stick to slot 4 and reset cmos again. The first boot after resetting gave me debug code "64" then again, shout down, wait a couple of minutes, turn on Pc and... debug code "Ad" again.
It seems that first boot after cmos reset the mobo gives me a random debug code, then it returns "Ad" as always for the following boots.

  • IPod Video Won't Boot Past Apple Logo

I've had my 5th Generation iPod Video (80 GB) for about 1 1/2 years. I was using it the other day and it froze in the middle of a song, so I used the reset function to reboot it. Now it won't boot past the Apple logo; it just stays there (until the battery runs out).
I definitely can't use the iTunes "restore" function, since I've been unable to get my computer to acknowledge when it is plugged in.
I'm guessing this means my hard drive is done for? If so, I'm comfortable replacing it myself, but I could use some advice regarding a good (and economically priced) replacement drive. After a quick look inside my iPod, it appears the hard drive model is a Toshiba MK8010GAH.

You might try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

  • Video Out in Boot Camp with Windows XP

Sorry, this is my first help request... i hope i write in a correct section.
I installed Windows XP SP2 with boot camp in my Mac Book Pro. I have the third part MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter with audio. I use it for projector. I always use it without problems.
With Windows XP i can't use it... i don't know why. The adapter is power off (led is off) and i don't know what i have to do for use second monitor in woindows XP.
I know about FN+F5 in windows... but in Mac F5 is keyboard light and if i set Functions keys as normal key (from Boot Camp Options) F5 is refresh key and fn+F5 is the keyboard light.
So what i have to do?
    Thaks
    Ale

Yes, XP will be able to detect the expansion card if you download the appropriate drivers online. When bootcamp was first starting... this article circulated http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305401... summary, you should remove the fiber channel card before bootcamping. Since then the software has gone through the proper modifications that you can just plug the card in, boot into windows, and download the LSi driver for XP.
So you'll have no problem setting this up.
    Cheers
