OS and cloning

Am I correct to assume that upon cloning my Internal Drive (externally) I am also duplicating the OS?
If so!!!
Do I need to reinstall the OS on another virgin internal drive when re-copying in case of an upgrade (to a larger, faster drive than the initial onboard one)?
Input will be appreciated
Thanx

yes, a clone will copy everything.
If so!!!

no, you don't need to install the OS on the new drive first. just clone the current drive to the new one. Use CCCloner or Superduper for the task.
Input will be appreciated

    >I am trying to load my new programs onto this laptop
Actually, no you're not. You're trying to load old programs on this computer - programs that are based around the old (dead?) Mac OS 9, not Mac OS X.
The main problem is that Mac OS X no longer comes with Mac OS 9. If you want to run Mac OS 9 applications you can, but you'll need to source a copy of Mac OS 9 and install that before you can. Off hand I don't know of any sources for Mac OS 9.x. Apple no longer sell it. eBay might be an option.
Either that, or just use Mac OS X applications. You'd probably prefer that anyway.
Finally, as an aside, this doesn't really have anything to do with AppleScript, so posting in the appropriate forum might get you better luck.

  • SOA Suite on WLS - backup and cloning strategy

    Hello everybody.
Is there any best practices for implementing backups and cloning for SOA Suite instances deployed on WLS 9.2 ?

It has been a long time since I looked at this, try this location.
    BEA_HOME\user_projects\domains\SOADomain\servers\OracleSOAServer\logs\OracleSOAServer.log
The path maybe slightly differerent for you depending on some of the parameters you set at install time.
From memory I think you need to increase logging levels from the admin console but I'm not 100%

  • 11i upgrade(11.5.3 11.5.8) using rapid and cloning.

    Hi all,
Has anybody done this kind of an upgrade...?
    (11i upgrade(from 11.5.3 > 11.5.8) using rapid and cloning).
I would like to use rapid install to install 11.5.8 base and then i would like to clone the current instance to the newly installed 11.5.8 instance and if needed apply the 11.5.8 maintenance pack.
If anybody done like this, please provide me the step by step procedure.I am cofused whether i need to apply 11.5.8 maintanance pack after cloning to 11.5.8 or not?

    Hi yehuda,
    Thanks for your reply....
I installed 11.5.8 on both tiers and removed the default database and restored production DB and upgrade it to 8.1.7.4.But now the sysadmin and jtflogins are not working... it seemd like DB configuration parameters are still pointing to production.
So how you clone the database from old version to the new one and upgraded...... please let me know... i already cloned and upgraded it.. but i do have connection issues....
Beside that I also found the new 11.5.8 database instances has around 360 tablespace where as 11.5.3 has only around 290,probably according to the modules i selected... so that's not an issue.. but how can i resolve sysadmin and jtflogin errors using old database(which is now upgraded to 8.1.7.4)
    thanks

  • Difference between Database Mirroring and Cloning?

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me the exact difference between Database Mirrorring and cloning?
Is database mirroring and multiplexing same?
    Thanks
    Rajesh

cannot be kept current automatically with the source database It is possible using manually scripted code to automatically update a cloned database to in effect build your own mirrowing process. This is basically a description of home grown Data Guard and is how many sites maintained a ready to use backup prior to Oracle introducing Data Guard.
The best way to create a clone database today is probably to use the rman duplicate command.
The clone could be the base for use with a mirrowing process you are setting up or used for other purposes such as providing a consistent frozen snapshot of production for special reporting. It could become the unit test or system test environment or perhaps be used for diaster recovery purposes.
A clone is a one-time event. Mirrowing is an ongoing process.

  • Windows 7 Enterprise is not genuine after installing new hard-drive and cloning the old one

I retired from my job as a university professor two years ago, and they let me keep my laptop computer, which is a Dell Latitude E4300 with Windows 7 Enterprise installed. I do not have any of the original disks for Windows. Recently, the hard-drive began
to fail, so I replaced it with a new one, cloning the old hard-drive onto the new one. Soon after that, a popup window began appearing saying that this computer is not running genuine windows. One important consequence of this is that I can no longer use Windows
Update, so I have concerns about security. If I go to the control panel under “System”, it says windows is activated and gives me the Product ID. I have talked to tech support at Microsoft, and they tell me something along the lines of the following: that
the problem is the new hard-drive is not recognized as being licensed to use this copy of Windows, and that I should post a question on one of the forums asking this: How can I reinstall Windows 7 Enterprise on the new hard-drive? Any assistance will be much
    appreciated.
PS I have no idea which forum this should go under, so pretty much just picked one randomly.

  • MBP retina slow booting after repartitioning and cloning OS X

I bought a Macbook Pro retina 15" (512/16GB) few days back. OS : Mountain Lion 10.8.4
I wanted to partition the SSD to have Windows 7 in Boor Camp (120 GB), then a partition with ExFAT (260 GB) for shared data between Mac and Windows and lastly Mac HD (120 GB) with Mountain Lion OS X.
After searching in the net, I got this link :http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?/topic/139815-successful-setup-os-x-lion-bo otcamp-win7-data-partition/page__st__14 and followed the steps as described the steps in pane # 21.
So to state again what I did,
    1. Used the disk utility to resize the Macintosh HD to 120 GB.
    2. Make another partition of 260 GB in the remaining space. So I now have three partition, the first with Mountain Lion, the second (260 Gb) and the third (120 GB) free.
    3. Booting with the recovery option, cloned the Mac HD from first partition to the last partition.
    4. The system was booting fine with the newly cloned Mac HD (last partition).
    5. Then again booting with the recovery option erased the first partition and formatted with ExFat to make it Bootcamp.
After these steps the system is booting fine with the cloned Mac HD bootable drive but booting is very slow. It takes a minute to show up the apple logo. How can I fix this ?
Should I do a fresh installation of OS X in partition 3 ? Please advise.
    Thanks and best regards,

I solved the problem of slow booting.
Selecting the Mac HD from the start up disk option solved the problem. There was only one option : Mac HD , so I thought it is selected by default. But after selecting it manually and restarting, now boot takes only a few secs. Thanks.

  • Archived/ Erased and cloned drive won't boot.

In the process of adding bootcamp, I was prompted to backup my system drive and erase/ reinstall so the drive would be one extended journal.
I backed up to external firewire drive once via Time Machine and a second time via CCC just to be sure I had the entire drive. - It shows up as a time machine icon plus a mac hd 10.5.6 internal icon when the drive is connected - as if there are two drives on one without the partition.
I changed the external to be the boot drive to check the backup worked - which it does.
I then proceeded to erase my system drive and copy across the backed up clone.
This appears to have been done, yet when I remove the external drive to let the internal boot, the machine just keeps going to grey screen with the pending wheel, then restarts. I presume the internal drive is not being recognised.
I have to boot from either the OS X Leopard DVD or the external which is a perfect clone.
    Help!
Do I need to recopy the drive? am I missing something?

What do you mean by "copy across the backed up clone"? Did you clone the erased drive from the backup or do something else? Just copying files will not create a viable startup drive. You must use the clone as the source & the erased drive as the target, using the same or a functionally identical cloning process as you used to create the clone,. The only difference is the swapped source & target.

  • Flattened and Cloned, Edits Not Saved

I flattened an image and made a duplicate layer to clone on, which I was able to do. Though after flattening are layers really possible? Then I did some more cloning without making  a duplicate layer. When I saved the image-- I also get the Replace option becase I'm updating old edits--the old image is saved and not to one with my new edits. I did notice when working on the image there ws aother image layer peeking out from under it. Is it possible for me to save my latest image with its clones or do I have to start over?

It sounds to me that you are saving a lot of picture files which are really work-in-progress. Why save all these and fill up your drive with suboptimal pictures?
If you save the file in the native format, you can preserve the layer structure, reopen subsequently for additional edits.

  • Upgrading HD and cloning using Disk Utility

I'm going to upgrade my MacBook Aluminum Unibody with a larger and faster hard drive (500 Go Seagate Momentus 7200.4 SATA 2,5" 7200T 16 Mo).
As you'd probably expect, I will need to clone my current system to the new HD.
To achieve my needs, my strategy is the following:
    1) booting up using Snow Leopard install DVD
    2) connecting my new drive through a USB enclosure
    3) using Disk Utility's "Restore" feature with Macintosh HD as source, and the new drive as destination
    4) switching the drives
I came across tons of people in the same scenario as mine during my research for the best solution, but it always ended up with Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Almost nothing about Disk Utility.
If they seem to work fine for most of us, I find Disk Utility more trustful (1), and I prefer block-to-block to file-to-file copy (2), as the last method will necessarily skip some "uncopyable" files.
I have none of the above software, and according to its documentation, I believed to understand that CCC can't achieve a block-to-block copy running on the source system (which does make sense).
So, considering I only need to clone & switch (no backup purpose or whatever) my hard drives, why would I use CCC/Super Duper over Disk Utility?
Yeah, a file-to-file copy will kind of defragment my system, but is there something wrong with my method? I really don't understand why DU is so underrated.
    Any feedback much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mickael

I see nothing wrong with using disk utility to do what you want. If I'm correct, you can only create a disk image with disk utility, so it will not be bootable. It will accomplish the same goal as other software to restore as you described. The advantage to cloning you drive with the other applications is that you will be able to boot from the external drive if problems arise. Both applications are free to download.
I used super duper to clone to an external drive as a backup and keep it updated. I always have it to boot from if my main drive fails. The process is up to you.
Note: I though you needed a disk image to restore from, but I was wrong. You can do a restore from the drive itself.
As i said, I see no problem. It's your choice.

  • Licencing and cloning ???

I have have just bought 11 computers which are the same.
There are a number of cloning tools out there including Acronis, CloanZilla, HDClone5, AOMEI.  What I want to know is if I clone one drive to the rest of the drives is it going to break something as far as Licencing is concerned.  Are
the licenses built into the software that is installed on these Lenovo Systems, or can I simply cloan them and I will not run into any issues with the updates etc.
I have watched the video and read the material from Microsoft called building a standard image of windows seven but this seems quite involved and quite frankly since I have Acronis and some of these other utilities it makes it so much users simply to run
them back it up and then restored to the various computers.

Probably. There's quite a bit more to deploying Windows, it's not just cloning.

There is more to the licensing than the firmware and OS. If you use simple cloning techniques (capture the clone, *after* the computer has been allowed to perform first-run/OOBE), yes, you can expect issues.

It is involved. That's how Windows works. If you capture a backup/image of a machine which has performed setup/individuation, then clone that out, you are deploying without performing individuation. Sysprep performs that function.

  • Disk utility and cloning

I tried disk utility to create a restore image. But when I select destination, disk utility says it will erase my drive. Is there a way using disk utility to Crete a ghost image of my boot partition without erasing my external drive? Much like Norton ghost does.
Or does disk utility not perform this task?
I saw carbon copy cloned, but would rather use disk utility if I can.
    Thanks
    John

    Disk Utility erases the drive.
I don't think this will work, but you could try making a disk image on that drive, mounting it, and then using that as the destination. However, I thnk asr needs a physical device.  I found this old, but likely still useful info on asr (utility that disk utility uses): http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20040726230142403
