OS Back up before installation new SSD

I'm about to buy a new SSD to replace my old HD (MB PRO MID 2009 13"). The back up's in the Time Capsule are good for installing the OS in the new SSD or do I need something separate?
SEcond questions: what 's exactly a TRIM? Do I need one?

Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:

I currently have os x 10.4.11 on my mac book and just purchased the Mac Box Set to install Snow Leopard.
Do i need to back up anything on my mac before I install?
I'm mainly worried about my music on itunes and also all my photos in iphoto..
Will they get deleted?

On my old macbook (osx 10.6.8), is there an easy way to clone my new SSD HD before installation? I have the cable connector for the new SSD to the USB port

My Macbook, 2007 vintage with osx 10.6.8 and an 80GB original HD is going to get a new brain....a 240 GB HD. I have the USB cable to connect the new HD to the laptop before swap of the drives. Is there an easy way to transfer the appropriate info from the old HD to the new SSD before the hardware swap? Where is the procedure?.....I have a backup plan to use my external backup drive to do this but that would seem rather cumbersome.....Recommendations???

Purchase Lion prior to new SSD installation?

I am currently running Snow Leopard on my 2011 iMac from a 120Gb SSD. I will be replacing the 120Gb SSD with a 240Gb SSD this weekend, and I believe it might be a good time to upgrade to OS X Lion. I would prefer a clean install of Lion on the new SSD, and intend to do this through the Internet Recovery feature, but I have some concerns.
1. When should I purchase Lion? Can I purchase it during the Internet Recovery proceedure, or do I need to purchase it before hand?
2. When I performed a clean Snow Leopard install on the original SSD, I deliberately abandoned the additional printer drivers and language packs to conserve space. Will I have this option with the Internet installation of Lion?
3. Is it possible to burn a recovery disc of Lion once it's up and running?
4. Can I restore my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup to Lion?

Internet recovery is not available until Lion is installed on a machine. You can
purchase Lion and then download it but do not start the installer. Follow the
instructions here:

You can then use this disk/USB stick to do the Lion install.

There no longer is any custom install option available for Lion as there was
in Snow Leopard .

Not sure of this one as I never use Time Machine. You could get
an external SATA->USB adapter and connect the old drive and use Migration
Assistant, as you will probably need to start a new Time Machine backup

I tried to delete everything concerning to CS6, rebootet and so on - nothing worked. Two hours later I tried to install DW 5.5 - that worked. Afterwards I tried again to install 6.0 - without success. Can anybody help?

Meanwhile I solved the problem as follows: I searched for "dreamweaver" everywhere an deleted everything I could find. Then I searched for "CS6" and did the same. I guess there were around 20 or more places where I deleted directorys or files. Suddenly the installation did not stop at 2 % what it always did before and the installation was a success :-) It cost me more than 4 hours to figure that out and I did not find a really helping hint somewhere. Adobe itself I could not contact because I could not find an email adress or a phone number - poor support for such an expensive software. For luck I did not have to deliver something just in time. Lacking a useful support is a really poor, poor attitude of Adobe... I think I will not buy anymore Adobe products - it could cost too much of my time... :-(

How do you actually edit your contacts after/before backing up to a new phone?

I recently backed up the contacts on my computer to my new iPhone5C but I ended up with over 1,400 contacts. Most of which are totally useless one-off emails or numbers of people long dead & buried.
Is there a way - apart from manually deleting each contact one by one - to actually edit one's contacts before backing up to a new phone?
I know iTunes only pulls the contacts from my Outlook so I get a bucket load of email addresses and old numbers that I never use.
Any ideas?

you can sync your contacts and things under your own itunes and your wife can have her own... or both in one as long as you have it synced in the same computer they will be there
if you name ur phones its easier to tell which is which
my husband kids and i all have our names and then iphone next to it and it creates a different backup for each and then we update and we restore from there it lets you choose which backup you want...

If you have performed a sync with the device since you restored this old backup, then don't bother looking for another backup. iTunes writes over the last backup each time you sync. If you were handling contacts in iCloud, you would find them by logging into iCloud. Or you can check settings and iCloud and see if the button it on for Contacts. Otherwise it might have been on the computer, if you had a program that syncs with iTunes and handles contacts, depending on the computer system you use. If Windows, it would be Windows Contacts or Outlook. If a Mac, there is a Mac Address book as well.

I have a new Corsair GT SSD sata 3 drive on my mack book, I have read on corsair web page that is good tho activate the AHCI and TRIM but I cant find information about how to do this on OS X.

That's information for non-Apple hardware. You can activate TRIM using third-party software: TRIM Enabler 2.2. However, most new SSDs should not need TRIM activated on the Mac.

When I installed Lion all of my files were intact and where I left them, and I did not back up my Mac, however having seen some of the problems some people are coming across when installing Lion I would recommend backing up before you install (just to be on the safe side).

Recently I purchased a Samsung 840 EVO SSD for my Late 2011 MacBook Pro. I removed the optical drive from my device and repositioned the original HDD into an optical drive caddy and added my SSD where the HDD was originally.
What I now want to do is reinstall OS X 10.9.1 onto my SSD which is named "Samsung SSD". I have backed up my computer using Time Machine. I restarted my computer and held down CMD+R and clicked on the prompt to reinstall OSX onto my new SSD. About an hour after it started reinstalling it said it could not as the device was damaged... it is brand new and was treated very carefully, i am certain it is not damaged. Am I doing something wrong????? PLEASE HELP

Connect the SSD with an external enclosure. Boot the system holding down the Command and R keys to get to the Recovery partition. Partition and format the drive with Disk Utility, then install. You're done.

Brand new SSD. Old drive went bad and no back-up. How do I go about formatting etc. with the new drive. I get a failed message when trying to partition or erase new drive to format.

Installed a new SSD as my other blew it's age. I have no back-up and need to format the new one. I go in and either partition or erase and get and error message. Please help.

It goes something like this...
Put your new drive in the enclosure. Use Disk Utility to format it, etc. I'd give it a slightly different name than the original. Let's say you have Old Disk and New Disk as your drive names. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Old Disk to New Disk. Now you should have an exact copy, which you can test by rebooting and holding down the Option key. Choose New Disk from the list and let it boot, make sure all is well.
Shut down and physically swap the drives. Take Old Disk and put it in the enclosure. Now your system has a new disk with a lot more space and you can reformat your old disk and just use it for large files or whatever.
