OS Combo Update 10.5.7 has broke my sleep mode---HELP!

Hey,
I am really upset with Apple right now for releasing a faulty OS update that instead of improving my MAC, it has made it a nightmare. After I installed the last OS update (i.e. OS Combo [of trouble] Update 10.5.7). I have not been able to put my computer in sleep mode because it just keeps on turning back on. Without sleep mode I have to shutdown my computer or leave it on all day just so I can use it. I went on other MAC forums and lots of people are having the same problem with no solution.
If anyone knows how to solve this problem (so far I tried the refiguring the ethernet connection--didn't work) please let me know because I am really hating Apple computers right now, and I have a Vista operated PC!

I would be hesitating to blame the 10.5.7 update as being the cause the problem even though it is co-incidental. I would suggest that something is amiss in your settings or something has gotten corrupted. It's just a matter of narrowing it down and finding where the problem is. Do you have anything connected to your Macbook, other than a power cord, that could be triggering it to wake up? Is it possible that some external device is the cause?

  • Ipad 2 recently updated to 6.1.2 Cycles to sleep mode repeatedly.  I

My Ipad 2 recently updated to 6.1.2 Cycles to sleep mode repeatedly.  I had restored to 6.0.1 because of the same problem, which then cleared up with the restore process.  It seems to have started after letting the battery run down, which after charging it would not report 100%.
After a successful restore, Itunes reported my IOS was out of date and I updated to 6.1.2, which was a mistake.  Now it goes to standby mode after about 30 seconds and when I surf, the unit will lock up.
Any ideas on how I can correct this?  I've tried most suggestions I've found on the internet.  This unit has not had that much use.  Not too impressed with this from a quality standpoint.   I guess I could use another paper weight. Had I intended to use it alot, I would have purchased the insurance.

The problem has resurfaced. There appears to be an issue with the power management subsystem.  Since my last post, the power capacity display was not being updated, reporting the same 75% during use regardless of whether it was plugged in or not.
I used the tablet over the weekend and as a result the power went down to 9%, which was finally reported after logging in. This was the first time that the power capacity display had been updated, though the unit was working. After charging it, the power capacity looks right, though it keeps shutting down. It almost looks like some sort of auto shutdown invokes due to the subsystem not being updated with the correct power data. I think the tablet is charging because after restoring/resyncing from two weeks ago, it ran fine on the battery.
Today I was informed that the power should not go below 30% -has anyone heard if this?  If so,the moral of the story is not to let the power get low. Well, is there any insight on this or how to correct this or why the power capacity is not being updated.  As the last restore sort of correcting the problem of its constantly shutting down, subsequent to the power capacity display was not being updated

  • Internet is EXTREMELY slow after computer has been in sleep mode (T61)

Pretty self-explanatory. I did a system restore to factory settings recently and ran the ThinkVantage system restore tool and updated everything. Now, whenever I put my computer to sleep, it fluctuates between going around 3 MB/s 5% of the time and around 0.01 MB/s the other 95% of the time when it's woken up. The only temporary fix is rebooting.

Yes, if the power settings have it such that "sleep mode" is disabled, then you're right; you shouldn't have a problem
I'm more interested in what happens if you explicitly force the system into sleep mode (via Fn+F4) and then wake it up. Do you still have problems with wireless performance? If not, then I'd suggest manually changing the Windows system standby setting to whatever you desire (5 minutes).

  • OS X Mavericks has broke my MacBook Pro - help...

Last night I downloaded the Maverick software update and when my compete was attempting to restart the screen went all distorted (green and greys).
I've since turned off and turned on my mac 5 times and the same issue occurs before even displaying the log-in option.
Please help and like I've mentioned there is nothing I can do with apps / software / settings as it won't even display the log-in screen.
Does anyone know what to do? Experienced this problem before?
    Thanks

  • When my MAC has been in sleep mode for a while and you try and get it started again the mouse makes a splotchy movement across the screen and i have to reboot

When my MAC has been asleep for awhile and I move the mouse it makes this digitized blob run across the screen and erases all below it. The only way I have found to get it to quit is restart the computer. Does anyone know what is making it do this?

okay, you know this is for the Mac pro (desktop mac) rather than the MacBook pro, right? That being said, sounds like you have a problem. Turn off your screensaver, if it's on. if it's a hardware problem, eg the GPU, then take it in. If it's software, try running disk Utility and repair permissions. Failing that, get out your original install dvd's, boot up from them, and try "Archive and Install"

  • Is it safe to do Software Update? and to put it on Sleep mode?

I'm coming over from a Pro Tools background, and with PT they would say not to do software updates as it can cause bugs with Pro Tools, is this an issue with Logic? and also Digidesign would say not to manually put your computer to sleep while running pro tools cuz it'll cause glitches or errors.
i would think cuz its all comin from the same house (Apple) that everything should be all good, no worries. but i still have to ask.
    thanks

Don't assume that because it's all apple there will be no problems! A quick surf around this forum on the subject of software updates will be enough to assure you of that!
And I would never put the system to sleep whilst actually running a session - I have had problems with this in the past (disk too slow errors etc.) I have my energy saver settings set to "never" except for the screen saver...
Check with other users on this forum is my advice before installing any update at all - do a search first and if you can't find answers then ask, but just make sure you include as many details about your machine, setup, OS version etc. as possible.
If your system is working fine I wouldn't bother with the upgrades personally.

  • External usb disc used for Time Machine backup disconnects when Mac has been into sleep mode

I use a 1Tb External usb disc used for Time Machine backup which works fine, but when the Mac goes into sleep mode & powers back on I get a message stating that you should always eject the Drive before removing.
Any suggestions on how to get around this problem would be welcome

Look at the root of your hard drive for a folder called Backups.backupdb.
Or, a sparse bundle disk image for one of mobile computers that might have tried to back up to your Mac.
If you have those, remove them and try again.

  • Re. 10.4.11 Combo Update

I want to install the 10.4.11 PPC Combo Update. However, mDNSResponder has been moved from /sbin to Users on my computer in order to disable Bonjour.
Will applying the Combo Update reinstall mDNSResponder to /sbin? If so, would I just move it out again (leaving two mDNSResponder files in Users?) Any other unintended consequences? Nothing else in Root has been changed.

    WZZZ wrote:
I never saw -r-xr-xr-x. Don't know what it means; is that part of the file name?
No, that's the standard Unix permissions for the file (I got the information from the Receipts, which is what OS X uses to repair permissions).
… am doing the Combo to be sure I got everything
Yes the Combo will supercede all the other changes.
Anyway. just to be certain, you say, "well, yes...." This means I'll get a new mDNSResponder file back in /usr/sbin, and I'll have to move it out again?
    Correct.
If I may, one more quick question about the Combo update. I'm assuming it wont restore anything to default, that all the user preferences will remain intact. Is that right?
This is also correct. The update shouldn't affect anything in the Users folder(s).

  • Combo update

I'm having some problems with X11 - in short, I accidentally deleted it and after I reinstalled it from the Mac OS X disk, it just wouldn't start. I'm assuming I need to do a combo update, but I have a few questions. First of all, what exactly is this combo update going to do? I don't want to mess up anything on my computer, so it would be great to know what I should look out for. I'm not a computer expert, as you probably can already see...
Also, I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.6. Would anybody be so kind as to provide me a link to exactly what I need to download?
Thanks so much...if you need more info, please ask. (:

The combo update installs everything that has been updated since the initial release of 10.6. It won't overwrite the files you created.

  • 10.5.2 update and Leopard Graphics update = no sleep mode

All, After updating my MacBook Pro to 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics update, my computer will not longer enter sleep mode after a specified time. I can manually set the computer to sleep mode, but it will not automatically go to sleep mode. I have tried resetting the System Management Control Center VIA http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and everything else in that doc.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA Jon

Call AppleCare and see if they can help.
    Regular trouble shooting
    1) Create a new account, name it test or something
    2) log into that account to see if the behavior changes
    3) If it does, then there is some problem in your own account.
    4) If it doesn't, restart.
    5) If the behavior still doesn't change, there is some system configuration error
    In this case
    6) Open Disk Utility. Verify your disk, then repair permissions (not likely to fix the problem but will at least eliminate that possibilty)
    7) Get a copy of Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a MODERATE cache cleaning
    8) Restart
If still not fixed, reset PRAM and the SMU. Look on the Apple web site for instructions for your particular computer.
If still not different, do an Archive and Install. However go to the Apple web site and download the 10.5.2 Combo updater first. After you Archive and Install from either the disk that came with your computer (assuming that it is Leopard) or the retail Leopard installer. Then run the combo updater. Then run Software Update.
These problems are disturbing and really shouldn't happen, but they do. However, they can be fixed and you'll find that Mac OS is, overall, much better than the alternatives.
BTW, I just went through this whole mess for crashes on wake from sleep (USB issues) and failure to sleep (printer driver issue). Another computer had DHCP problems and actually needed a reinstall. However both of them are working fine now even though it was a pain getting there.

  • 10.4.6 Combo Update has slowed my  iMac G5

    Hi,
Ever since I installed the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update, my iMac G5 (Rev B) seems to be running very slow!! For e.g., when I restart my Mac, the grey spinning ball appears on the blue background for 20-25 minutes.
Additional info: I generally connect a 200 GB Seagate HDD via USB to my Mac.
I have repaired permissions but no help!!
    Any other "speed-up" tips?
    Please advise,
    Thanks in Advance,
    Suddha

Some of these steps are of questionable value. Erase w/zero is a security function & applies to volumes, not drives. As such, it doesn't "zero" the drive in any special way, nor are zeros in volume data any safer than any other data pattern if file system errors occur.
If you really want to start fresh, select the Partition option in Disk Utility & reformat it with the "Partition" button. This will rewrite the boot partition info, partition scheme, etc. Be sure to check the "Option" button to make sure you choose the scheme appropriate for your Mac, in this case Apple Partition Map.
It is not necessary to keep your startup drive below 50% usage for good performance. There is some small advantage to keeping individual, very large files (such as video clips of several GB or more) on another drive, but in general, as long as 10-15% or at least 5-7 GB are free on the boot drive, there is little to be gained from a performance standpoint by freeing up more space on it.
The same is true of the clone/reclone step, which is a way to defragment a volume. Tiger does this by itself for smaller files, so unless you have a lot of the large ones mentioned above on the drive, you won't see much if any improvement in responsiveness, particularly with a fast SATA drive like in your iMac.
In this case, the cache cleaning & related steps in Onyx or a similar utility will probably do what you want, together with trashing any prefs for apps that continue to be sluggish & avoiding any login items from third party sources until you get things humming along smoothly.
It is better to try one thing at a time & see if it makes any difference rather than trying the "shotgun" approach, since pinpointing the source of the problem is the best way to prevent it from reoccurring.

  • Eternal beach ball after 10.8.5 Combo Update

Just installed the 10.8.5 combo update on my mac mini (2013, i7).
Everything was, of course, working perfectly with 10.8.4
Now I get the eternal spinning beach ball just before the login.
I've already verified the boot hard drive, repaired permissions, cleared the chaches, reset pram, reset smc, etc.
Pretty much everything I can do just shy of a clean reinstall (which would've taken less time).
Boots fine in sigle user and safe mode.
Only workaround has been to remove the physical ethernet connection (using wireless) and ensure the two usb bus powered devices -- a canon lide scanner, and an Asus USB DVD burner -- are disconnected prior to booting the computer. Symptoms that are widespread and linked directly to the .5 update and are not addressed in the supplementals.
Any other possible solutions or perhaps someone knows if apple is still working on the issue?
Unplugging USB devices is merely a hassle, but not one i'm going to live with. I will take the time to reinstall and stop with the 10.8.4 update if I have to. I'd rather not, but since there was nothing wrong with the system or hardware I have no problem with stopping there. the .5 update didn't include anything i needed.
Don't waste your time posting if you are going to advise me that it's something other than the update that borked things. It's the update and I've already confirmed it. It's not my software as i run nothing aside from MS Office and Adobe CS6 beyond what apple preinstalled. Unless you can specifically point to a conflict with the files in the update and either of those two packages, keep your opinions out of this discussion. If you can, i welcome the data.
    Thank you.

I also encountered this "spinning beach ball of death right when I'm supposed to see the login screen" issue. It happened to three of the laptops I manage (two MacBook Pro 13" retina, and one MacBook Pro 15" retina; all late 2012 models). The "spinning beach ball of death" symptoms started manifesting themselves right after I performed "software update" on them.
The symptoms: I get the spinning beach ball (or sometimes just stuck with a grey screen) when waking from sleep, when switching users, right after a reboot, right after a cold boot, just as I was trying to get back to work after the screen saver kicked in ... it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but I'd say about 3/4 of the times I expect to see a login screen, I got the spinning beach ball of death (or the grey screen of death).
This is what I think solved the problem: Rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index.
    (Apple's How-To instruction here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409 )
Be sure to disable screen saver, set "computer sleep" and "display sleep" timers to infinity before the start the rebuilt process (explanation below).
I also did other things like resetting PRAM, repairing disk permissions, rebuilding the directories with DiskWarrior, etc. But the best I could tell, it's the rebuilding of the Spotlight Search Index that actually did it. I speculate that the system, while trying to show you the login screen, was also trying to fetch some images or info (the users' login profile pictures, the background wallpaper, whatever), but somehow couldn't find the data and got stuck because of some issue with the Spotlight Search Index. So once the Spotlight Search Index is rebuilt, the "spinning beach ball" problem went away.
So which software update component broke the system? As counter-intuitive as it may seem, I'm pointing my finger at the component Apple calls the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" version 5.01. As I mentioned earlier, I observed this problem on three different laptops, and I updated them weeks apart on multiple occasions ... I've gone days and weeks on two of them after the 10.8.5 Supplemental Update without problem, I've gonve days on another laptop after the Safari 6.1, Remote Desktop Client 3.7.0, iTunes 11.1.3 updates without problem. The only constant that applies across all three laptops was that right after the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" version 5.01 was applied, the "spinning beach ball of death" symptoms started manifesting themselves. That's why I'm pointing my finger at the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility" version 5.01 update as the prime suspect. (Secondary suspects, if I have to name them, would be the Safari 6.1, Remote Desktop Client 3.7.0, iTunes 11.1.3 updates.)
On rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index ... this is a long process. It's will likely take hours (depends on how much data you have on your drive). You don't want the screen saver or the display sleep or the computer sleep timer to trigger and lead you right back to the spinning beach ball while you wait for the Spotlight Search Idex to rebuild. That's why the recommendation to disable screen saver and set the sleep timers to "infinity" before starting the index rebuild process. If you try monitor the rebuild process by eyeing at the "mds" and mdworker" CPU utilization ... don't get faked out by the occasional lulls when the system shows you that "mds" and "mdworker" CPU utilizations are zeros. "mds" and "mdworker" appear to take short breaks once in a while, and that starts up in earnest again eating up close to 100% of CPU cycles when they work. Rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index is supposed to take "hours," so best guest, I'd say wait at least one hour, then check if "mds" and "mdworker" CPU utilization figures stay consistently close to zero for a few minutes before calling it done. I do not know of any better way to tell if the system has finished rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index.
All the above are based on my experience rescueing a grand total of THREE computers back from their software update-induced "spinning beach ball of death" problem. So granted it is a very small sample base. My apologies in advance if it turns out the above does not solve the problem for you. (I'm just going to skip the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility" version 5.01 update going forward as I have no desire to "recreate the problem" just to test my hypothesis.)
    Good luck!

  • Stuck iMac during 10.6.2 to 10.6.8 OS combo update

    Dear community,
I recently had to wipe out an iMac HDD and reinstall the OS. The install DVD contained OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I wished to upgrade to Mavericks (10.9) by doing an intermediate update to 10.6.8, as required by the new OS installer.
After a successful disk erase & OS installation from DVD, I tried to update the OS by using the 10.6.8 Combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399, which was located on an external hard drive. Just before finishing the update, the screen went black and there was no way to recover the system. Fan and internal HDD were both spinning, so the system was stuck for an unknown reason.
After waiting for 15 minutes, I decided to switch off the computer manually with the power button, and since then the iMac won't boot any more. Here's a list of what I tried:
    - Boot from cd ("C" during startup): impossible, another disc is currently in the drive, and can't eject it
    - Safe mode: won't load in 30 minutes, I guess it won't load at all
    - Reset NVRAM: no effect
    - Single user mode:
          - "fsck -fy": no effect, volume is OK;
          - reinstalling the updates from within su mode "softwareupdate -i -a" (hoping to reinstall it and get rid of the possible crap): impossible, there is no network connection.
Any help would be very welcome

Thanks for the hint, I managed to eject the disc holding the mouse click and inserted the OS DVD.
This doesn't solve the problem though, I can't boot from it (holding "C" has no effect, nor has the "Alt" key).
Reading the verbose boot output, things seem pretty bad:
    jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal: from some_decimal: to some_other_decimal (joffset some_hexadecimal)
    jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal done.
Maybe broken filesystem, but I can't explain why external boot mode doesn't work…
