OS discs - wrong ones?

Well, was loving my new refurb Mac until two nights ago...did a software update, during which i got a message saying the update had unexpectedly terminated. so i surfed a bit then switched my Mac off. Went back to it about 30 mins later, tried to turn it on and it wouldn't get past the progress bar / loading page. Tried to reboot it again and momentarily saw a black page with some white writing in the top l/h corner - then it just got stuck on a blue screen again. How disappointed was i?
Called Mac support on their rather cheeky 0870 fee-charging number, who were helpful and advised me to reload the OS - popped the disc in and lo and behold the discs it shipped with were the wrong ones. Then the guy on Support tried to get me an appointment with the Mac store in Regent Street - nothing available for this weekend - and he could only book me in a day in advance, so couldn't even make an apointment for the week ahead. He then told me I could try one of their authorised service centres, but there may be a charge. Was not happy about that at all - didn't see why i should pay to fix something 10 days old.
I eventually managed to get an appointment at Albion Computers, a reseller and service centre, they had the correct OS discs and got my Mac up and running again without losing any of the stuff i had done on the machine since getting it 10 days ago. They also advised me that technically I was not covered by the warranty because it was a software problem which caused the Mac to go wrong - despite the software update being from Apple. Thankfully, they did not charge me!
Both the guy at Albion computers and the Apple support guy said that the discs it shipped with were the wrong ones - they are 10.4.8 whereas the OS my machine should have shipped with is 10.4.6. A couple of people have told me that this should matter as both discs are 10.4.something - in you opinion are the correct? (i have siunce updated to 10.4.9 via software updates)
Anyway, London based Mac users - Albion Computers on The Strand were great and I highly recommend them, really helpful people and the shop was lovely and calm. Micro Anvika wanted to make an 'admin' charge of £80 plus VAT even though the machine is in warranty!

As for the issue of not getting the right disks, the fact that the machine is refurbished puts the whole issue of warranty on more shaky ground. Some places that sell refurbished products typically will stand by whatever software is included. Others do not. The real question is where you bought the refurbished machine? If the Apple Store, I would contact customer relations at AppleCare's phone number and tell them everything that happened to you. You should get the correct disks. They will be useful in troubleshooting issues in the future. And now that you have everything up and running, I strongly recommend you institute a backup plan, in case you never do get the correct original disks, and also in case something else which made the machine a refurbished machine crops up.   • I utilise Entourage for my mails. When I tip a mail adress and write a wrong one, I change. When I will send again a mail to the same adress the wrong and good one appears both.  How can I delete the wrong one

    I use Entourage as Mail sender. I don't use the adress book.
    When I tip a wrong adress  and make the correction, the old one stays in the memory of my computer ( apple I Mac ).
    When I wish to send a new message to the same adress, the wrong one appears in the same time , and some time I don't remember wich is the good one .
    To avoid that problem, how can I delete the wrong adress for future sending of mails.

    Solution, use Apple Mail
    I can highly recommend migrating to the Address Book. You won't have the typo'ed history in your email.

    In Mail Preferences/Accounts/each GMail account, set up the SMTP Outgoing Server for each account separately, going into SMTP name/edit/Advanced and specify the Username of each account.  The Outgoing servers must be two different servers, authenticated by the Username and Password of each.
    Otherwise, the GMail SMTP server will change the from address to that of the account where the SMTP server was setup.

  • HELP!! I had two libraries in iPhoto, Photos imported the wrong one, and now I have lost 10,000  photos. How can I get them back??

    I originally had two libraries in iPhoto, my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why. Anyway, I updated to OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3 with the new 'photos' app. It asked me to choose one of the libraries and evidently I assume I must have chosen the wrong one. It only imported 322 random photos, not the 10,000+ we had in iPhoto. I can no longer find these photos or the other library anywhere, it appears to have been deleted. I have tried 'alt' clicking the icon which used to open a 'choose library' box, but this no longer works in photos or iPhoto. I have no idea where it has gone and it contains precious memories over the years including the birth of our children. Can someone please help???

    Since you are sharing it between two Macs, is the library on an external drive or a NAS, or another remotely mounted volume?
    If the library is not on a directly connected disk, formatted MacOS Extended, move the original iPhoto Library to a directly connected, correctly disk.
    And the try first the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on that library.  Repair the permissions, and repair the database in iPhoto.  Then try to migrate again to Photos.
    To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto Library to launch the iPhoto Library First Aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
    The select "Repair Permissions". And then repeat, but select "Repair Database"
    But make a current backup of your iPhoto Library before you try this.

    iPods (except for iPod touch) are not linked to any iTunes "account."  They are associated with your iTunes library. The account in iTunes is your Apple ID, and that is used to buy and download content from the iTunes Store.  It is not required to use an iPod.
    The 1st (and 2nd) gen shuffle can only be used with one iTunes library at a time.  When you connect it, iTunes should prompt you to start using it with your iTunes library, and warn that the shuffle's existing content will be erased.  Have iTunes erase the shuffle, and it will be associated with your iTunes library going forward.  You can then add content to your shuffle.
    The need for the previous owner's Apple ID and password should only come up if you are trying to transfer existing content from the shuffle to your iTunes library, AND the previous owner had content purchased from the iTunes Store.  Just cancel out of that step, if iTunes asks.

    When you say your superdrive rips, the import speeds are typically around 20x, what encoding method and bit rate are you using ?
    I imported another CD and watched for what import speed numbers were displayed. Routinely, they hovered around 8x and sometimes up to 12 or 13x, but never higher. I was told by someone at our local user's group meeting that ripping at AAC 192kbps was a double-pass, I think that was the words they used, and therefore slower. ( Many members thought 7 minutes to rip was typical ) I'm not so sure if that means the drive will only spin at half it's rated max speed ? Anyway, I walked over to my son's PC with the CD and ripped it at AAC 192kbps to his iTunes library. The numbers I saw were from 18x to frequently 23, 24 and sometimes briefly to about 26x. His drive has a max of 40x. By my reasoning, anything that would cause iTunes to rip this CD at a slower speed, whether due to the encoding rate or the CD's surface condition, should affect both computers equally, yes ? Yet the drive on the PC performed on average at twice the rate of the iMac. I think it's safe to say the rip speed is comfortably within the operating margins of both drives.
    I'm not yet fully convinced this is normal for an iMac. My CD are in excellent shape. I'm the only one who uses them and I handle them with about as much care as the old audiofiles used to when they handled their vinyl LPs ( well, at least not as far as wearing cotton gloves and sweeping the dust off ). Most of them have absolutely no visible scratches or oily finger prints on their surfaces. I might experiment and see what rates I get if I use MP3 or a lower bit rate for AAC.

    plug cable into computer not phone
    turn phone off
    hold home button and plug cable into phone.  do not release home button until an itunes graphic appears on device.
    look to computer should have message about recovery mode click ok and restore

    Photos that were synced from your computer using iTunes can only be deleted by de-selecting them from the folder from where they were synced -  and then re-syncing.
    Connect the iPad to the computer and launch iTunes.
    Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
    Click on the Photos Tab on the right.
    Uncheck all of the albums that you want to remove under the Sync Photos From heading
    Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes
    If you are using iTunes 11 and you can't see the sidebar go to View>Show Sidebar from the menu at the top.

    I'm sure some of you before have inserted a CD only to have iTunes be unsure what it is, and ask you to select the correct album from a list that it thinks it might be.

    Yes, I have encountered this but a long time ago...
    Firstly try putting the CD back in then go Advanced>Get CD Track Names and see if the choice comes up again. If that doesn't work eject the CD, delete the tracks that are erroneously named confirming that you want them removed from the Library, reinsert the CD and choose the correct choice when iTunes accesses Gracenote.
    Or...
    You could Get Info (⌘+I) on each track and amend manually

    When did yours come out? what does the above show as model and minimum build?
    You should have yoru OEM OS X DVD, not one from another Mac, or retail, though the last retail OS X DVD was a year ago 10.6.3.
    If it installed, I don't see an issue unless the drive had corrupt directory etc.
    What you need to do is repair your boot drive or restore from backup.
