OS for new build w/K8N Neo4 Platinum

I will be building a new machine using an MSI Neo4 Platinum mobo. This is my 1st build. I have a registered WIN98 SE installation disk but fear it won’t work as MSI advises nvidia 4 chipset will not work with it. I do not want any more hassles than I already anticipate. Is it possible to buy the Pro Upgrade and do a direct install without 98 SE being installed or do I have to buy the full Pro? Concern being that by installing 98 first, I will trigger mobo errors prior to even getting a chance to upgrade. Thanks.

Again thanks to everyone; Hansh & Mike, you appear to have some experience with using the Upgrade, so let me ask you a question. Have you ever done it with this board in particular?  The concept I believe would be that during the upgrade, the board itself doesn’t know (recognize) the OS until the install is complete, therefore it has no idea that SE was ever present, correct? To follow this train of thought – in order to insure that no remainders of SE are left hanging around on my HD prior to initiating this install, I would probably be best off if I started with a clean HD versus putting the old HD w/SE installed in; do you agree or should it make no difference?
Continuing, re: use of upgrade and hassles. I’m a college student and classes start next week, so I need to do this ASAP hence reduce hassle potential. The economics of all of this are: Upgrade via Bookstore is $71.00; best Home OEM is same amount; XP Pro OEM is $95. Dollar wise Upgrade makes best sense if hassle free; but some are saying go full OEM as no hassle. What’s the consensus (p.s. concern w/OEM = hassles w/MS during repeated changes I will be making to hdwre configuration as part of my install as will be adding one piece at a time to check for failures as I go. Thanks.

  • New build: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum + maxtor 300gb = problem?

Got these 2 products included in a order:
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939)
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 300GB
While checking up on the MB on the MSI site, I noticed a version of the bios (1.2) that says 'support for 300gb maxtor drives'
That's the same HD one I have coming with my order >.<
If the MB I get hasn't got that version of the bios already installed will I have trouble installing the drive?!
I downloaded the bios and it says in the readme not to install it from a floppy disk, so I guess you need a system up and running to make that update in the 1st place. No Idea how to go about this, if the need arises.

    Hi drjugears,
    Welcome to the forum.
Many people are runnimg ok anyway as dope  says.
But it's not an issue you can update the bios via floppy b4 connecting the maxtor.
See Flashing the BIOS for Users using NON FAT file system This is a guide written by msi. Strictly speaking if you folow the instructions you aren't flashing from a floppy the actual update is done on a virtual drive in memory.
if you need a floppy boot disc see Why no floppy for bios flash?
    luck with build
Thanks very much for the welcome and info.
Unfortunately I'll have to wait a while to see...I installed everything....but need some adapter for the 6pin connecter on the ATI card. The power supply came with some 8 pin one. So I need a 4 to 6 pin adapter. Doubt If I'll find one local, so will probably have to wait until monday now to try it out.

  • New Build Update K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra 7125-010

I will report on the positive results of my build first. All installs went very smooth, no problems except for a bad floppy drive from the start which I did replace. I have 1 Sata hard drive on Sata controller #1. Installed XP Pro/SP2 Slipstreamed without doing the F-6 thing and had no problem with the Sata drive booting after install. I have a DVD/RW on IDE 1 as Master and a CD-Rom on IDE 2 as Master. The board is functioning very well for 5 days now. My only disapointment with this board, is the onboard sound. This is supposed to be better than my old K7N2 Delta L onboard sound. I am here to say, it is the very worst sound system I have ever heard. While getting the new build setup, I had a pair of $4.00 speakers hooked up and thought it was acceptable. When I hooked the build up to the rest of my hardware, which has a pair Altec Lansing speakers that sounded great with my old K7N2 Delta L, I was very shocked. Sounds like crap. Not much volume or other settings can make it sound worth a darn. Just can not figure out how the el-cheapo speakers sounded better than a pair of quality speakers. I have fooled with settings until the lady of the house is ready to pull my plug. Other than the sound issue, I do have to say this is one incredible machine. Guess if I really want quality sound or even something close, I will have to install a sound card.
    Regards; Pops'
EDIT: Open mouth and insert foot. I was not about to quite give up on getting some decent sound from this system. Opened the Nvidia Mixer Application again and started fooling with selections. On the first screen, I had choosen the " 2 Speakers Mode ". Well, I started playing with the selections there and selected " 7.1 Speakers " and that made all the difference in the world. Now it is very acceptable. I am not real picky, but just could not figure out what happened when I moved the build to my office which had the Altec Lansing speakers and it sounded like crap without changing any settings??? Long story short, I guess it pays much reward to keep picking away at the settings.
Now I can go to bed and not have that grinding on my feeble mind.
    Regard's again; Pop's the pooped.

Yep,the 2T setting is much slower compared to 1T.
What I did was this,I set the top row at auto,so that covers all the cas latencies.
Somewhere below is a second option on auto,I set this at manual.and changed nothing but the 2T to 1T.
One thing to note though, when I build my system I had some nvraid complaints when booting, still after disabling them all.
It needed a cmos reset to work properly.
Also I noticed in memory section from bios two settings in the bottom row.
    read preamble value
    max Async latency
They were both on 6ns. Setting them on 5ns makes things a little faster but also made my windows show some error messages just out of the blue.So I kept them on 6.
Now after a bios flash without resetting the cmos they were both set at higher numbers, thus more stability at a cost of some speed.
Again I had the nvraid complaints,so I needed to reset cmos (which is commonly recommended, even by MSI) and noticed the 2 memory settings are back at 6ns.
This led me to believe the board picks this up automatically after a clear cmos.
So no need for you to change any setting in bios except for the 1T option.
You will understand what I mean when you visit this bios memory page.
On a side note,I run at stock speeds also, except for the cell menu,I use agressive timings as enabled, speeds up your ram a bit also.
Ofcourse you have to try if it works on your system since you got different memory compared to mine.
    Goodluck...

  • Multiplier ? K8N Neo4 Platinum

Got this rig to POST the other night, installed W2KPro SP4, all seemed well. Last night I installed Prime, Sandra CPUZ etc. Parts are all still on the bench. I should mention that I'm using a $10 PCI Video card for posting, troubleshooting etc. I can only display in 16 colors. I don't know if this would make a difference. I started foolin around Ocing this thing, upped the FSB speed from 200 to 220, upped the CPU voltage up slightly, didn't fool w/any RAM timings or change anything else. The machine will boot to Windows, and CPUZ shows the overclock(220 10X). Given my CPU stepping and this mobo, I fully expected Prime to fail, which it did, promptly. I've read here that I can drop the multiplier to say 9 for example to reach a more stable OC that way. I just don't know how. I'm also unclear on Ocing the RAM, but perhaps I'll post on that later. Thanks

  • New K8N Neo4 Platinum build. Help, Nforce4 driver question?

I am building a new K8N Neo4 Platinum system (see my sig).  I wanted to get the latest Nforce4 drivers, before installing XP.  I noticed on the Nvidia website a 5.10 Unified Driver download and a 6.66 AMD download.  Which should I use?  It looks like the versions in the 5.10 Unified Driver are actually older than what is in the Nforce4 drivers, from the MSI site.  If I use the 6.66 AMD drivers, should I make a SATA Raid Driver floppy, from them, to use during the XP install?  Any advice is appreciated.

just do it from a floppy, LiveUpdate is crap
and yes you HAVE to F6  these drivers on Windows install  if you plan on using SATA or you cannot boot from SATA
unfied drivers are NOT FOR NFORCE 4.  You MUST use the NF4-specific 6.66 (or earlier)
Unified Drivers are specific only to nForce 1/2/3.  AMD and Intel each have specific and unique driver sets for nForce4.
download 6.66, extract and explore the folder
go to IDE->Win2K->SATARAID and copy everything in this folder to a floppy
make two floppies just to be safe
you cannot use CD, you MUST use floppy because Windows will look in a: only
as soon as Windows install starts you will see a screen that says "Press F6 to install third party SCSI or RAID driver"... hit F6 and insert floppy and after a few minutes, you will get a screen that says"
"Press S to install other drivers..."
    press S
next screen comes up, first select and install "nVidida Raid class driver (required)" -->hit enter
back to "Press S to install other drivers..." screen
    press S again
screen wil come up again, this time choose and install ""nVidia nforce storage controller(required)"
one more time back to "press S to instal other drivers...", this time just hit ENTER
    now you're good to go

  • New K8N NEO4 Platinum (non SLi) wont leave boot screen???

I just went out and purchased:
    AMD Athlon 3000+
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
Some standard case with a 450w power suply
On the +12v it says I have 18a
And Im using some things from my old PC:
    (PCI) ATI Radeon 9200se (CrapTastic!)
    Maxtor 40Gig (not Sata)
    1x Samsung  PC2700 DDR 512mb RAM
This is my first PC build and I ran into a couple of problems:
I have tried 3 different PS/2 keyboards(2 older and 1 newer) and none of them work. It shows the Platinum screen and then goes to a different screen that says "Keyboard error or not plugged in"
So I try my USB keyboard that I got about a year ago and the lights flash on the kb when I first start up but.....once I get to the Platinum screen the keyboard becomes unresponsive and I cant move off the Platinum Screen into BIOS or anything.
    PLEASE HELP!

Well I went out and purchased a USB to PS/2 adapter and plugged it in with the USB keyboard that would light up but still not work and......................... STILL DID NOT WORK!
Im going on 2 weeks now with no Counter-Strike:Source and im goin nuts

Grimster i agree totaly with jeanguy, you need around 25-30amps min on these boards, so try a mates psu.
Do I really need more than 18a with my system? How much money (ballpark) in US dollars do you think a adequate PSU for my rig would cost???
I am really thinking of just takeing it back and getting it replaced with the same mobo and see if that works.

  • RMA'ed K8N Neo4 Platinum board, no sound on the new board's output

    Hi Folks,
I just got back the replacement for the K8N Neo4 Platinum boad I sent in a month ago.  The good news -- my mirrored RAID array came back up and my WinXP/SP2 setup looks fine.  The bad news -- my front speaker output doesn't put out any sound.  My Amplified 2.1 speaker set was plugged into my older machine and working fine, and I just swapped the speaker cable into the green output plug on my MB, and no sounds comes out.  Sounds was working on the previous MB which I sent in for RMA, so the software on my HDD's should have been set correctly to generate sounds on the new MB.
First, any suggestions on how to get the sound outputs working?  Second, any pointers on how to diagnose what's going on?  Should I be seeing "Realtek '97" (or something like that) for the playback and recording devices, for instance?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Clark

Couple of things come to mind.  Power on the system and head on' over to the bios.  Ensure the audio onboard is actually turned on...or if the board they sent you had it disabled.
Check the Device manager for any "!" in yellow next to anything in the audio dept. (windows control panel/system/hardware...yadda yadda....)  If the onboard audio is turned 'on' and windows is seeing it? You'll have a heading for AC '97 listed, and also under sound effects options in the control panel it should be listed.  If it's listed as working 'ok'?  I seem to remember a set of jumpers on the motherboard for audio output.  In the manual it's listing as follows:
"If you don't want to connect the front audio header, pins 5&6, 9&10 have to be jumpered in order to have signal output directed to the rear audio ports.  Otherwise the line-out connector on the back panel will not function"  That's out of my manual regarding JAUD1 connector.  And I have the Neo4 K8N board.
    Best of luck!

  • X2 3800+ (E6) support for the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

    Hi everyone:
I have decided to purchase the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI (MS-7100-020) and I ready placed the order.  However, I wonder if it supports the AMD X2 3800+ (E6 Version) CPU?  The reason I asked the question because I found the following table from the Taiwan MSI web site which shows that X2 3800+ E6 is undertesting.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1
    Thank you for any replies.

Mine worked, ran for 2 weeks already at stock, tried & ran to 2.2GHz on stock HSF with no problem.
    Using X2 3800+ E6, MSI K8N PLI Platinum mobo, 3.7 bios & Inno3D 7800GTX single latest nvidia 78 drivers, 2x512MB DDR400 CL2.5 Kingston Ram, Hitachi T7K250 Sata 250GB HDD, NEC ND-3530A Benq 1640, , Silverstone Zeus 650W PSU
At first I have this concern too, but tried it anyway.

  • Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480W for K8N NEO4 Platinum

after much debacle of what psu to propel my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum (Non SLI model) it has become clear to me that the only real choice i have within my reach is the thermaltake silentpurepower 480w, this is simply the best power supply i can get down here (Colombia, South America) and the most expensive one too.
i have done my fair share of research on the matter and have found a number of people using this power supply to power systems based on the K8N NEO4 Platinum, even some have been bold enough to use the SLI version of the board with this power supply.
so i guess its go for broke time on the matter, any feedback ?

i have the buterfly model http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/2005/purepower/W001920.htm
it has a 20 pin connector and a 20 to 24 pin convertor, so you can plug it in both ways
from what ive seen its the same psu with different accesories, but its the same psu, so i guess this is it. Im gonna connect the 20pin to the 24 connector in the motherboard as those 20 to 24 adapters dont seen to generate any kind of trust in me, i guess as long as i keep my present setup and i dont overclock everything should run just fine.
    many thanks...

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum rig build opinion

I am putting together a multi-media rig and want your opinions.
It willl be used for audio, video and photos for a hobbyist friend:
    MSI "K8N Neo4 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 2.2 GHz, 512KB L2  Socket 939
    eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6600 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, PCI-Express, Model "256-P2-N369"
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD740GD
Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD2500JD
Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200
Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, (Twin Pack) 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200, Model  TWINX1024-3200C2P

I'd go with Crucial Ballistix instead of Corsair.  I've read too many reports of Corsair memory being DOA lately and I like Micron chips anyhow.   I verified my memory with MemTest86+.
Make sure whatever video card you get has a relatively quiet fan.  The 6600 and 6600GT series cards with 60mm fans are much quieter than the ones with the dinky 40mm fans.  I'm very happy with my Leadtek.  I believe MSI's cards have 60mm fans?  The 6600GT is MUCH better than the 6600 for games.
Try to get a Winchester-core (90nm) Athlon 64.  Lower power consumption.  More expensive though.  Arctic Cooling's Freezer64 works very welll for me but I suspect their cheaper Athlon 64 CPU cooler would be good enough and do a better job of cooling motherboard components.  Depends on how militant you want to be about quiet.  Of course, you'll definitely want a tube of Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.
Seagate's 7200.8 300GB and 400GB drives rock.  Tough to find a good price on the SATA version though.  I'm using mine for HDTV PVR storage so I wanted the BIG drive.  Ditto everything said about the Raptor.

    Hello,
I just set up my new rig, the system specs are..
    amd64 3500+
    K8N Neo4 Platinum PCI-E (non SLI)
    2x80gb SATA (insockets 5 and 6) Silicon
    2x512 ram generic

The entire install went well.. It zipped through windows98... But when it tired to Boot windows98.. it went really really slow.. The animation bar at the bottom was chugging.. like lagging.. and took well over 10 minutes to fully load..
I check RAM was not it.. re-connected.. was not it.. new SATA cables.. no idea any help would do.. getting impatient and tired =O must get it up tonight!

Don't know if you or many people have seen this it's appeared over the last few days K8N Neo4 Platinum  -  NOTE: NVIDIA nForce 3/4 Series board DO NOT support Windows® 98/ME
There are people running 98 but my own understanding was that 98 could only use a sata drive as a data drive & could not be installed on a sata drive. Where have you installed it ???
see Win 98SE IDE problem.... Has anyone worked it out yet?

  • Largest SATA drive for K8N Neo4 Platinum

I have a system based on the K8N Neo4 Platinum board, I'm planning to up, the storage capacity of my rig and was wondering if I can install a 500 GB or larger SATA or SATA II drive on it?
to make long story short I would like to know whats the largest Hard Drive (either IDE or SATA) one can install on a system with this board without problems or compatibility issues.
I presently have a Maxtor Diamond Plus 80GB SATA drive,
    Any takers??? ???

I see no problems, just try it.
As for a Sata-II drive, don't take Maxtor, any other drive should be fine.
However, you maybe must jumper it to SATA-1, depends on the onboard controller.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI sound needs -5V; newest Antec 550W has no -5V rail

I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.

Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.

    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
Thanks again for the teriffic help

Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02
