OS Graphics won't load, causing system lag to ungodly ends

This problem is with the computer listed at the bottom.
Recently, I've been having a lot of trouble with my computer, but the only lasting problem thus far has been a problem with certain aspects of the OS GUI not working properly, namely drop menus, mouse overs and the dock.
The blue high-light which follows the mouse cursor in menus does not appear anymore unless I hold down the mouse button; a minor inconvenience, but an annoying one. This is the least serious of the issues.
Mouse overs do not work at all. This ranges from mouse-overs on buttons for the OS (like what does what in Photoshop) or changing from the pointer to the little hand when hovering links in Safari. A little more serious, IMO, but still just an annoyance at best.
The dock no longer rises and lowers on its own. To raise it, I need to click near the bottom of the screen to get it to come up and to get it down, same process. This is really frustrating, since often times to get the dock up I will have to inadvertantly click on an application that I don't want to open, wait for the app to open, shut it down, and hope I was quick enough to keep the dock up while doing all of this. Even more annoying is that the text for each application in the dock will get stuck, staying in their places even when the dock is down.
Last night I tried backing up and doing a complete wipe and reinstall of my start up disk to no avail. The problems persisted even beyond a complete reinstall.
Any ideas?
Power Mac G3 800 mhz Mac OS X (10.4.4) Radeon 7000, Two HDs (40 and 80), Sonnet Processor upgrade, 768 RAM

Believe me, I would if I could. But all of my $$$ goes to college right now, and a wedding...in other words, right now isn't a good time for my poor little B&W to poop out on me
Besides, most all of my work is Photoshop editing and writing, which isn't all that CPU intensive, so 800 mhz g3 is more than enough, at least, with the RAM I have it is.

Did this just start recently? Since you are running Firefox 6, I don't think it's due to a change in Firefox, but it could be related to a Flash player update. There are some compatibility issues between the latest Flash player and some Firefox add-ons or settings. All I can suggest is to reinstall Windows, see link below on how to order recovery media for your model. You will have to reinstall Ubuntu after using the recovery media so back up your files to an external drive. You can order HP recovery media below, or call HP on the phone to order 1-800-474-6836

Hi and welcome to the forums.
Boot from your Install Disc, holding down the C KEY
    1. Select your language
    2. From the Menu Bar, select Utilities>Disk Utility
    3. Select the HD, click the first aid tab
    4. Select Repair Disk. Reboot.
Then from Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility, select the HD and Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Firefox won't load at all, there is no "end processes" to end, it just won't load, no errors, just nothing.

I used internet "exploder" several days in a row and now cannot load firefox. I have tried end processes and there is no firefox open, there are no errors, nothing supposedly wrong. I can't get it to laod. What do I do. I hate exploder.

You can try to move the entire Firefox folder to a different location to make Firefox create a new file structure for the profile folder.

  • Mozilla apps won't load after System Restore from TM

Alas, a hard disk failure which Apple kindly replaced even though It happened 25 days out of 3-year AppleCare. Thanks!
New hard disk installed, proceeded to do System restore from TimeMachine and everything went perfectly (as far as I can tell) EXCEPT Firefox and Thunderbird. All the other apps are loading and seem to be working as I would expect (I guess I won't know for sure until I've worked for a few days) but Firefox will not load - the icon bounces in the dock for a couple of seconds and then disappears. Out of curiosity, I tired to load Thunderbird (which I seldom use) and not even the icon appears.
    I am using OS-X 10.5.7 with Firefox 3.0.11
I have tried deleting the apps and the associated files in Library?Application Support and doing a re-install from a fresh download - same result. I tired restoring the apps from TimeMachine using a restore date one day before the HardDisk failure. Same result. I have used MacTuneUp to repair permission. Same result.
Any ideas why this is happening? I am most surprised that a fresh install didn't help. And it's interesting that two Mozilla apps are affected. I can live without Thunderbird but Firefox is important as there are some websites that still refuse to open with Safari.

    [email protected] wrote:
OK - that was a good suggestion. Firefox and Thunderbird both work when I log is as a guest. Now what should I be looking for on my main account that is blocking the apps from opening? Thanks for the help.
probably something in their preferences. the most radical thing would be to delete the whole folders /users/usernmae/library/application support/firefox and /users/username/library/thunderbird. or just move those folders to the desktop. then try starting firefox and thunderbird. however, that will wipe all user info in both apps.

I replaced my hard drive in my Powerbook G4 1.25
I take that to mean that you removed the old HDD and replaced it with a brand new Parallel ATA/IDE 2.5" HDD. Correct?
and it will not load the operating system
Do you mean that it will not boot from the install disk? or
Do you mean that you booted from the install drive disk, formatted your new HDD and installed the OS and now you cannot boot from the installation?
Here are directions for formatting and for installation:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
    • With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
    • Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.

Hi, I have the same problem as you.

  • Flash Pro v 11.5 won't load graphics from saved .fla

I have downloaded the latest flash pro cs5.5 package and installed it on 3 different windows XP machines and I get the same bad result.  This is Flash Pro 11.5.0.325 on  XP SP3.
I made a small slideshow swf consisting of two jpeg images and nothing else.  No music or other bells or whistles.  Just 2 images converted to symbols, some keyframe/tween definitions with altered alpha channels.  The slideshow runs perfectly and as I expect.
I save the slideshow as a .fla file.  I need to add some more functionality from this plateau to show that the product can do what we need to the boss.
When I later load this .fla file,  I don't see my graphics on the stage anymore.  I right-click on the images and click on the option in the dialog to update the images.  I see that the white stage now has the image I expected.  When I close the dialog that lets me update the image flash pro abends and I get the crash dialog from microsoft.
Why can I make this slideshow and have it run perfectly, save it successfully (so I think) and then it won't load properly or let me work on it after one save?
I physically called customer support which would not help me.  I must have gotten Nancy Pelosi for support because they wanted to make me buy the package so I could find out what was in it that was causing the problem.  I think my boss would have some sharp instructions for me if I had the company spend close to a grand for something that does not work in the first place.
I have updated the software when the system  tray tells me to,  I have installed the software multiple times on one of the machines.  No matter,  I get the same result in every case.  I thought the software was a full version for 30 days trial but I am now wondering if it is a lameware version that needs purchasing before it will work completely.
Can anyone help me?  I searched the forums (and the internet) and could find no mention of this problem.  I find that hard to understand when I get it so consistently.
    TIA

    Hi Max,
We are currently working on a way to handle these type of images better in Flash. In the mean time, please see below on how to fix these images.
    1. open the JPG in Photoshop.
    2. re-save as a JPG with a different filename.
    3. import the new JPG.
These steps correct the JPG header bytes and allow Flash to correctly read them from XFL files.
In your case specifically, after step 2 you should use the bitmap properties dialog in Flash Library panel to reimport the image. After importing you may or may not see a change on stage. Please save the file, close, and reopen the file. The images will appear on stage correctly.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention and thank you for the quick response.

    Best regards, Mikkel

    To further explain:
I didn't need to locate any invisible files in my case.  I discovered that I had 4 versions of the System Preferences application on my computer.  (The System Preference applicatioin is what loads the preference pains when you seledt System Preferences.)  I merely searched for "System Preferences" in spotlight.  Spotlight located 4 different versions of the System Preferences application. Some of those versions apparently tied to preference panes that used the old 32 bit encoding from the non Intel processor days.  When I clicked on the System Preferences under the Apple menue it was apparently pulling up an old version of the System Preferences applicatioin instead of the correct one in the main Applications folder.  I also noted that if I clicked on System Preferernces in the dock or directly in the the Applications folder, I would not have the problem of some of the preference panes not able to be viewed because of the " "it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac" message.  So I surmised that the correct System Preferences application was in the Applications Folder on the top level of the drive directory like it was supposed to be but that when I clicked on System Preferences from the Apple menue it was loading one of the 3 old System Preferences applications that were buried elsewhere on my hard drive.  If you find you have more than one System Preferences application on your hard drive you need to trash the other System Preferences Applications.  Before trashing the duplicates, you should test the one in the main Applications folder by directly double clicking it and make sure all the preference panes in it work properly then trash the duplicate System Preferences applications you found in spotlight.
You may also find like I did, that you not only have duplicates of the System Preferences on your hard drive but also several old duplicates of the entire Applications folder buried on your hard drive. if that is the case you should compare each folder and make sure there is nothing in the old duplicate Applications folders you still need.  You will probably find that all of the latest versions of your applications are in the main Applications folder where they should be.  If so then trash all the old duplicate Applications folders as well.  Keep only the main Applications folder on the top level of the hard drive.
Trashing all these extra old Applications folders that held old duplicates of all my applications in them on my hard drive solved a bunch of other problems I was having with some of the applications as well.
For the technically minded:  Why does this happen with Mavericks and not with Mountain Lion?  I suspect that the old Applications folders and old duplicate System Sreferences applications didn't matter to Mountain Lion because it searched for the System Preference application under the Apple menu differently than Mavericks does.  I believe Mountain Lion seached all the top levels of the Application folder before drilling down into any subfolders to find the System Preferences application.  Mavericks apparently does it the opposite way.  It searches the first subfolder in you Applications folder and drills all the way down in that subfolder first before going to the next subfolder and drilling down in that subfolder all the way to the bottom.  So it searches all the subfolders before searching the main level of the Applications folder for System Preferences.  Since my old duplicate System Preferences applications where in subfolders with titles that were earlier in the alphabet than the main System Preferences application it searched those subfolders first, found the old System Preferences application in the those earlier folders and loaded the old System Preferences first in the subfolders instead of the correct one further on in the main Applications folder.  If any one else has a better idea let me know.

    NFIXIT

There are three possible solutions to solve the situation:
    1) Install a processor supported by the current BIOS Version to be able to properly turn on your system and then update the BIOS to the latest Version to be able to use your E8400/E0 (update should be done from DOS only).
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Connect an internal floppy drive and a PS/2 Keyboard and then try to force the system into AMI BIOS Recovery Mode.  Instructions:
    Quote
Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A7345IMS.1xx to AMIBOOT.ROM
Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
Even though the AMI BIOS Recovery Procedure is the only chance you have to solve the situation without installing a different processor, it does not work in all cases.  However, as it is an easy procedure, it is at least worth a try.

  • After doing a system restore, Firefox won't load pages.

I restored my laptop a couple of days ago (from a previous date, not a full system restore), now firefox will open to the home page (google), but will not load any other page. It doesn't even bring up the "page won't load" page, it just continually says 'connecting' forever. I also noticed, even when I first open firefox, and it opens the google homepage, it doesn't have google.com in the address bar, it has 'about:home'. Internet explorer seems to be working fine, and my internet connection is fine, so I am not sure what the problem seems to be.

hello rlyslowff, one thing you could try is to remove all program rules for firefox from your firewall/security software and let it detect the program again...
please also [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ update your plugins] (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited on the web).
in case this didn't solve the issue, go to the firefox ''menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information'', copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum, as this might give us further clues what is going on...
