OS hang on permissions repair--help!
Hi all-
My Mac Pro started locking up the other day. The cursor still moved, but everything else frozen. It would happen consistently within about 5 minutes of finishing the booting process.
There'd be some disk activity for about five minutes and then it would slow down. The displays would sleep, and hitting the space bar brought them back but the screens were still frozen. There'd be a little more disk thrashing upon wake up. It would sleep and wake up fine, I just couldn't do anything other than move the mouse cursor around.
The problem is slightly better now and only seems to happen upon repairing disk permissions or reading a part of the disk. Disk Utility used to stop at the QTUpdate pref pane while repairing permissions; now it gets all the way to the first iTunes entry.
If Time Machine runs, at some point the system will freeze. It never takes very long. I've had to restart the machine just while typing this. That's why I think it's having problems reading a part of the disk.
Disk Utility initially reported a problem with the disk, so I booted from the Install CD and checked again. This time it said there was nothing wrong with the disk, and it's stuck by that ever since. I tried to repair permissions from the CD but was told that there was not a "valid package" to repair.
Disk Warrior found some issues and repaired them.
At this point I've removed every add-on I possibly can, and the problem still exists. I've used the Install CD hardware tester and it says my RAM is okay.
Repairing permissions in safe mode results in the same issue.
I used Cocktail to rebuild the launch database, also to look for corrupt pref panes. It found some and I deleted them. I didn't recognize any of them.
Help!
A quick search through these forums for SUID, the first step in using them, would have brought up many returns, most pointing to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448

I'm running the latest OS 10.9.1 Mavericks (late 2009 iMac). 8 gigs of RAM. 150 gigs free space on computer. Since upgrading to Mavericks, apps are slow to open, with frequent "spinning ball" interruptions. Repaired Disk Permissions - no help. Repaired disk - no problems indicated. Did notice in going to Utilities/Console that there are 4000 messages over a 3 day period. Any suggesstions how to correct this sudden slow down, other than psychiatric help?
Yes. Many messages show up when I try to use Office for Mac 08. Here's a sample (and one that repeats over and over again):
2/11/14 1:01:16.577 PM Microsoft Word[1912]: OTAtomicAdd32 is deprecated and will be removed soon. Please stop using it.
Also getting many msgs when I use Chrome. -
CANNOT REPAIR PERMISSIONS - pls help!
While booted from my restore disk (with Disk Utility Open & attempting to repair permissions), D.U. goes about 33% of the way & stops/displays the following onscreen message: Disk Utility Internal Error
Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.
I used DiscWarrior to rebuild the directories & then ran TechToolPro 4 from my eDrive to check Volume Structures (came up clean).
For the heckuvit, ran D.U. from my Apps Utility Folder. This time it did complete, making some changes. Ran a second time. Results of each are shown below.

Why is this happening & how can I resolve it?
DonThis has to do with a problem with the latest update and Panther and iTunes.
Tip offered by Kappy and others in the 10.3& earlier Forum;
1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
2) Run Disk Utility
3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
4) empty Trash.
5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
Hey presto. you should now be able to repair permissions again.
Offered by Bee;
Kappy, et all . . .
This was posted earlier today . . .
I'll have to get the author's name, sorry don't have it now.
It seems that it may not necessary to pull iTunes out of the App folder:
Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
If that is the case,
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Then see if you can repair permissions.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
Cheers!

Permissions repair takes hours, never finishes
I've been doing some looking around the forums but haven't found an answer to my question.
PROBLEM: Permissions repair takes FOREVER. I started a permissions repair task on the startup drive yesterday afternoon and it hadn't finished by this morning. In fact it said it had 12 more hours to go. Right from the start there are hundreds of entries about ACLs found but not expected. After awhile the list stops populating. And just when you think the thing has locked up, you hear disk activity and see the list change.
WHY DID I RUN PR?: We'd recently created a new user account on that machine and Final Cut Pro was crashing a lot on the new account.
OTHER TIDBITS:
- The account I ran PR from is an administrator account
- There are multiple administrator accounts on this machine
- This machine has a lot of disk: startup drive, project drive, scratch drive (2 disc RAID0) and an external FW800 RAID1 drive. (I ran permissions repair on the startup drive only.)
QUESTION: It seems like we have serious ACL pollution on this machine. Is there a way to clear them out and "start over"? I can reinstall if necessary, but would prefer not to.Hi,
Since Permissions Repair is checking permissions on (I believe) most every file in your system, it's not unreasonable to expect that the more files on your system, the longer the repair process will take. Twelve hours does seem a bit long, but as long as PR seems to be working and not hanging, if I were you, I'd pick a time when the computer won't be needed for anything else and let PR run to completion. Also, it seems that the remaining time calculation is an extrapolation based on the time already spent to do the completed work, and if some of that work took a proportionately long time, the 12-hour estimate could be a significant overestimation. Since you aren't eager to do a reinstall, letting PR run to completion seems to be the most prudent thing to do.
Hope this helps,
Ken -
Interrupted permissions repair
Whilst helping a friend to reinstall Flash I noticed that, even though I'd run the installer, there were still lots of Flash bits hanging around in her computer.
I was at the time running permissions repair, but terminated that halfway though, and restarted the iMac G5 [thinking that might clear the old bits of Flash]..
So .... Nothing happened - the screen remained black after reboot. Then after a couple of minutes the fan came on high speed and stayed on till I force quitted and tried again.
Same thing happens every time.
I was wondering if I shouldn't have stopped permissions repair while it was doing its thing...??
[When I do it on my laptop, I'm asked to enter my admin password. This request didn't appear on the other computer.
thanks anyone ... I feel a bit responsible ... did I wreck my friend's computer whilst trying to do her a favor???!
John UK
PS She did say that the iMac was behaving strangely last night - so it might not have been my faultSee if you can boot from her installe disc, or, alternatively remove the battery, let the PowerBook sit for a couple of minutes and then replace the battery and boot it up.

Repeating error message: "acl found but not expected" during permissions repair
repeating error message: "acl found but not expected" during permissions repair
My iMac is running slow. Processor running all the time. I was told to do permissions repair, so I did that. I get 100's and 100's of "ACL found but not expected" while doing a permissions repair in 'utilities'. It says 1 minute to complete but runs for a half hour. When it finally completes, I can restart the permissions repair again and it starts all over with same endless messages. Even though its says 'repaired', these ACL issues keep coming.
SEE BELOW ... What's wrong? And How do I fix it?
Kind thanks for your suggestions,
Vic

repeating error message: "acl found but not expected" during permissions repair
My iMac is running slow. Processor running all the time. I was told to do permissions repair, so I did that. I get 100's and 100's of "ACL found but not expected" while doing a permissions repair in 'utilities'. It says 1 minute to complete but runs for a half hour. When it finally completes, I can restart the permissions repair again and it starts all over with same endless messages. Even though its says 'repaired', these ACL issues keep coming.
ACLs are just junk left over from previously installed OSXs. Just ignore. They have no impact.
Describe your exact issue and computer specs and Linc may run you through a series of tests which may well help you find the problem to your issues. I agree, Permissions repair is rarely required.

Java issue with permissions repair
Hello.
I know of the list of issues that I can safely ignore when repairing permissions. However, recently I've had issues with Java on Safari and when I repair permissions, I get this:

Permissions repair complete
This is a tad bit more text than I am used to, and am wondering about the console.jar and "Virtual Machines" as I"ve not seen these before. Any ideas? Anything I should worry about?
Oh, Java test site says Java is working fine and is the most recent version.I´m also for a week now with a big problem in Mail - hundreds of messages got blank and disappeared after "rebuild", now it won´t even synchronize. I put this in a thread in the Mail forum, but solutions only go as far as backups - which I don´t have. It started after installing the last Java patch and it still the same after updating to 10.6.5 and permission repair (which shows:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
to sum up: Sent mails are lost, received mails before certain dates (few days back in 1 account, years back in another and no trouble in the third one) won´t get downloaded again, even with new setup of the account - and all started after the java patch.
Help is very appreciated (maybe I can restore my sent mails from somewhere?!)

OS 10.7.5 W' permissions repair problems. How to fix it?
I have a 27" iMac running os 10.7.5 and i'm having permissions repair problems ever since my last os update, does anyone know whats going on and how to fix it? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Something doesn’t sound right. The messages shouldn’t be ignored if you restart the Disk Utility app and the same permission errors show up. I’ve even rebooted the OS and found the same errors. I also mistrust the file check function (vs Drive Genius reports).
None of this ever happened until the last patch 10.7.5 (11G63). -

Then allowed the machine to run with no apps active, just in case the OS was perfroming cleanup funtions. Results: No discernible improvement in performance. The kernal_task shows 500+% and the CPU graph shows 70%-80%.
There is one hardware issue: The magsafe battery port stopped charging the battery, so the laptop must be plugged in all the time.

I purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for my iMac (Mavericks 10.9.4), downloaded it and have attempted to install it 10 or more times. I have done all the usual maintenance steps (repair permissions, repair disk, etc) and it still won't install. All goes well until the installer gets to "Running Package Scripts" then it stalls or hangs up and does not finish the installation. It runs and runs and runs. It never finishes. I wind up having to force quit the installer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Hi jtento ,
Kindly enable the Root Account for the MAC and then try the installation there (in the root account). Please find below the URL to enable the root account.
OS X Mavericks: Enable and disable the root user

ITunes Resource files seem to always need permissions repair.
Hey All,
The subject says it all; when doing a permissions repair, Disk Utility finishes with a very long list (31 pages) of iTunes files and resources that have been repaired. This includes files in differing languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish) as well as CD settings (I don't burn CD's with iTunes). Many other file types are included in the list. This happens repeatedly. Seemingly everytime that I do a permissions repair.
On the last permissions repair, there were also a couple of iChat files and a Java file (not that it makes any difference, but I'm sure someone would ask).
iTunes version 11.1 (126)
Thanks in advance for any assistance.I just saw this post:

Same results for 'Permissions repair complete'
Very strange. I went to "First Aid' and clicked on "Repair Disc Permissions."
After a half hour or so, the report showed stuff like "Repaired "System/Library/Core Services/ . . . and ended with "Permissions repair complete."
I repeated the process and got the same results. In other words, the repair was not complete.Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
There is never a reason to repair permissions, except in the very rare case of a permission error, which you'll probably never see, or a boot failure. The built-in help for Disk Utility says:
Repairing disk permissions
If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
It’s not completely irrational to repair permissions after running a third-party installer, since such installers have been known to set incorrect permissions. Otherwise, repairing permissions is a complete waste of time. -
Very weird permisions show during permissions repair - can anyone explain?
Hi there, I was using a camera tethered via usb when the capture software hung. Force quiting via the finder failed, and the app did not show up in activity monitor or top in terminal. I was forced to turn the power off as when i restarted the screen went grey and hung. I initiated a permissions repair via applejack and noticed that I had a lot of weird preferences, specifically that most seemed to be listed as aliases eg lrw-r--r-- Is this normal? I know a little but I'm no whizz. I'm quiet concerned so help greatfully received. Many thanks.

Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components. -
How to effect a "Permissions repair" (Adobe F.P.)?
To elaborate, I have an OS X (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and recently received, like so many others, the "blocked plug-in" message for most of my attempts to view videos, largely on YouTube. I seemed to have succeeded in "uninstalling" the old Adobe F.P. that I had procrastinated updating. Then I installed the latest (hopefully) version: 11.7.700.169 and everything seemed fine. Then I happened to skim an old Apple Support Community dialogue wherein one reader warned
that the last important step was to make and complete a "Permissions repair." I started to follow his steps, but it seemed complicated and when he further warned of "security issues" I got a little gun shy. Anyone who can walk me through this process, I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks, R. from W.Long version: Save and/or quit your applications & doucuments Go to Applications>Utilities Folder Click Disk Utility.
Click the Volumn (HD) that you want to check.
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (Don't worry about verifying)
At the bottom of window when the repairs have finished, you will see the “most important thing”: Permission Repairs Complete The previliges have been repaired or completed on the selected volumn.
Restart your computer (Optional).
Short version: Go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and select your volume and then select Repair Permissions.
Same directions are also in the OS Mac Help Menu. -
PPC G5 OS X 10.5.8 using disk utility not all permissions repaired
Dear apple Community,
My G5 PPC iMac OS X 10.5.8, Processor 2GHz, memory 2 GB DDR SDRAM, Total Capacity:149.1 GB (160,041,885,696 Bytes)
Applying Disk Utility to Repair Permissions there are always 12 permissions never repaired! Should I delete then reinstall the Operating system? OR
Is there something else that could be the problem?
Hope there is someone who may help
Best Wishes,
mflickAs long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
drwxrwxrwx
d = directory
r = read
w = write
x = executeable program
drwxrwxrwx
| | |
| | all other users not in first two types
| |
| group
|
owner
a little more info
Before the user had read & write. A member of the group had read.
After, only the user had read & write.
