• [nForce] Problems with K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum and SATA

Hi All
I have a MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum with an AMD 3200+ Barton.
I have 2 x 512mb Crucial PC3200 DDR400 RAM.
I have a Samsung 80gb SATA hard drive.
I am trying to install Windows XP Pro onto a blank SATA drive. The trouble is that I get into the Win XP Pro setup and it just doesn't recognise the drive. I have tried installing the drivers on the Flopy, but the drive just isnt recognised for me to install Win XP to the SATA drive to use as a boot drive.
I've read the advice thread, but couldn't find my problem.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Thank for that. I haven't done that but I have got XP to recognise the drive to install to it.
XP went as far as going to the lovely bright XP installation screen and has installed hardware. When it got to installing the network it just froze up and stopped working.
Now I think the problem may be that I set the one SATA drive up to be RAID (striped) in the RAID config. I will disable this tonight and have another look. The thing that I would like to know is what setting in the BIOS of this mobo means that the SATA drive can be used as IDE? I don't have two SATA drives to use in RAID, so I figured that I have to get the one SATA to act as an IDE drive. I have SATA spreading disabled, but am unsure as to which of the other settings to change. Soz to keep asking!
EDIT: I sorted the RAID config thing. Fomatted the drive and re-installed XP. Once again, it just stops once it gets to the windowsesque creen. It stops at various points during the installation, sometimes at the "installing networks" bit, sometimes at the "completing installation" (after coying data). I just don't know what to do realy. Might RMA the board and go back to my trusted old Aopen AK77-600GN :-(
Anyone any ideas?

• Motherboard MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum

Hello,
I'm brazilian and live in Rio de Janeiro.
I need urgent of the help of all you. I bought a Motherboard MSI K7N2 DELTA 2 PLATINUM, and I installed a porcessor AMD ATHLON XP 3200+ (BARTON) FSB 400. Please I want to install memoirs KINGSTON. The one that you find of installing two memoirs of 1GB each. I would like to have 2 GB of RAM. I researched in the site of Kingston and I found the reference  KVR400X64C3AK2/1GB dual, but it is not in the list of the support of the MOTHERBOARD. I also found the reference KVR400X64C3AK2/512 single that is in the list of support of the MOTHERBOARD. Which would his/her suggestion be as for this subject? Do I buy these memoirs or other? Which is his/her suggestion?
At once I thank his/her attention.
Duarte.

Thank you for his answer.
Actually any memory of 1GB doesn't exist in the list of MSI, but memory of 512 MB, the reference is Kingston KVR400X64C3A. I chose Kingston because here in Brazil it is very well considered, and I thought about 2GB to have a great capacity of memory, but I got afraid of buying without having certainty of the compatibility with the MOTHERBOARD. But would thinking better be interesting to buy two memoirs of 512 MB and to do dual channel, what do you find? I think 2GB of memory are unnecessary, 1GB are already good. Would you recommend another memory? Or with different capacity? I await his answer.
Thanks!

• Question installing SATA drive on Delta 2 Platinum mobo

I just got a brand spankin' new Raptor 74gb SATA drive I will be installing on my brand new MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum mobo, and I have a few questions.
First off, I don't have any desire to run a RAID configuration but I want the SATA drive to be my boot drive.  So my question is, do I still have to enable RAID in the bios? Or is just Enabling SATA enough?
Second, when I go to install WinXP, do I have to hit F6 and install any drivers?
The mobo did come with a floppy that reads
G72-NVSA020
Nforce3 SATA Raid Driver (For WinXP only)
If I do need drivers, does that floppy have the drivers I will need when installing windows? Or is there a place to download the latest ones I will need?
I am slipstreaming XP SP2 into my XP installation.
Also, I've read that I'm not supposed to have any PATA drives hooked up when installing windows which makes sense.
oh yeah...one more thing...i'm going to be using an AMD xp 3200+ 400mhz bus processor and all I have is three sticks of Crucial PC2100 DDR memory that I wanted to use since I already own it.  Is this a bad idea?
thanks a bunch

Thanks for the quick response...I'll be building my system this weekend...I'm waiting for my PC Power & Cooling Silencer 470 ATX power supply that will arrive tomorrow.  This bad boy should give plenty of juice (26a on 12v) to power my rig.  It's good to know the pc2100 can be used to get the system up and running, but I'll be investing in some pc3200 shortly. I thought of a few more questions if you'd be kind enough to reply:
1) When I buy the PC3200, I plan on getting 2 sticks of 512 and running dual channel.  I see you run Crucial ram.  Are there any issues with Crucial ram running dual channel that you know of?
2) I have a SB live soundcard but plan on getting an Audigy 2 zs soon, should i just use the onboard sound for now?  Is the onboard sound as good as an SB live?
3) Do you recommend using the MSI "LiveUpdate" feature to update bios and drivers, or should I just go with the Nvidia UDP v5.10 and update bios manually? Or maybe I don't even want to update the bios?
Thanks again
-Mike

• HD or Booting problem on MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum

Hi all,
Ive a weird issue which i cant figure out myself. I've 2 HD's..lets call them A and B where A = 60Gb (Master) and B = 80Gb (Slave)
It's is like this:
A and B are connected to the primary IDE-slot. A will boot when set as Master and B wont start booting when set as Slave mode (i mean, it wont show/appear in the first hardware (detection) bootscreen of yer BIOS where it says its present or the so called POST-screen), but if I set B as Master only (A turned off) it will boot.
What also happens is if I disconnect the power of drive B..drive A will boot..and while OS is loaded...I turn on the powercable from drive B and reboot..suddenly out of the blue it detects both HD's and reboots like it should do normally...but when i reboot from than..the same thing happens again..(it wont recognize B anymore)
Sumtime it regonizes both drives and sumtime it just won't and sumtimes just 1 drive..
Another thing, when it won't recognize one or sumtime both drives...the POST-screen gets stuck at the name and version of the BIOS...and where it says: 'detecting IDE drives...'  when it is at this stage..and I press  on the DEL-key for example..it's loading damn too slow..I've to wait about 10min before it enters the BIOS-setup..
I am 100% sure I set the jumper correctly for Master or Slave mode on my HD..I know there's sumthing wrong..but don't know where...Ive changed the jumper with a new one  ..switched IDE-cables...switched HD's (set B as Master and A as Slave and vice versa, knowing there is no active partition on B..but only to check if it recognizes the drive)..in all cases..the BIOS settings are set as default!
any1 can help me out with this?
It worked smoothly on my system till i noticed my second MEM bank of my mobo broke (Asus A7N8X-E)..so i had to change it quickly (and went to the store with my warranty to fix this board..it was only 3 months old) ..since I've seen/had enough Asus mobo's in my life I went this time for an MSI which looks better in my opinion...so now i have an MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum..it works fine...except that HD issue mentioned above
any help would be appreciated..thnx in advance!
cheers!

Hi,
I've done that already several times...it doesnt work..any other suggestions?
Now I can boot normally when I disconnect the power of the 2nd HD (or just any HD)...when the os is loaded...I turn back on the power of the 2nd drive and reboot...than it will run/boot/restart etc..normally...this is the only workaround I have at the moment...this only works when the system is turned a long time...
My power supply is 400W..so I don't think Ive any prob with that
cheers

• Installing OS on K7N2 Delta

I have an issue with a K7N2 Delta 2 Motherboard.  I have recently used this as a replacement for my computer system.
I have an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU, a Hercules 400W  power supply, 2 western digital IDE hard drives 80 and 160 GB, 512Mb Kingston RAM, 1 DVD Rom and 1 DVD RW
I am using Windows XP SP2 and Xandros Linux.
I have been unable to install either operating system using either hard or either CD drive.  I had contacted Microsoft technical support and they thought I had a bad CD and are sending a new one, but I have since been unable to install Linux either.  Both installs they have problems when copying over the files to the hard drive from the CD.  The Windows XP gives a message about being unable to copy to copy a specific file (diferent ones at diferent times but about 1/2 way through) and then wont copy any more files.   The Linux program has the screen go blank during the file copy.  The same thing happens using both hard drives and both CD drives, so it seems to be hardware problem.
Another problem is during the bios setup the CPU is incorrectly identified as a 1800+.  I believe that it was identified correctly at one time.
I have bios version 6570NMS V11.6 040105.
Any Sugesttions?
Thank You
I have also tried the onlie support request but have not recieved the automated response

Hello
Thank you all for your replies.
I'm not at the computer now so I don't know the exact sepcs of the power supply.
I have the hard drive jumpers set to cable select, and have not changed them since having the old motherboard.
I will FSB bios settings.
Also the reason that I changed the motherboard, was that I was having intermittent problems with computer crashing.  I had swapped out various parts (I tried the power supply first) and still had problem, unitl I borrowed a motherboard and that seemed to do the trick, so I bought and installed this one.
Thanks again.

• Sata install on k7n2 delta 2 platinum

Specs:
AMD 3000 xp
2 No. Kingston PC3200 256 = 512
Maxtor 80 gig sata hdd
cd rom (noting fancy)
msi fx 5700 le 256
Pleaes advise on how to install an sata hdd on the m/b.
I boot using the XP boot disks and after disk #6 I get errors cannot find ntldr.
Please help.

you can find great tutorials to make your own bootable win xp disk, if for some reason you cant boot the one you "bought".  (dont want to go into it)
as long as you own the respective rights, this link will help:  Bootable WinXP CD
then just hit f6, use the drivers that came with the mobo, and have fun
this information will help if there is something wrong with the boot disks

• Athlon Thnuderbird and k7n2 Delta 2 Platinum [SOLVED]

Hello there.
I needed to upgrade my machine but keep my current CPU, so after a little reading around i decided to go for the K7N2 Delta2 Platinum board.
Alot/all the places that sell this product in the UK, list it as being able to utilise the AMD Athlon Thunderbird chip. It also states that the board supports the "AMD Athlon" so i thought it was a safe bet.
Anyway i recieved the board today and the machine will not post. The fans are spinning and it does'nt beep. I have tried different RAM and a different PSU. I have read the manual and ill be honest when i say i was a little suprised to see "no go action" as this is the first computer i have built thats ever given me any trouble.
The chip that i have is an Athlon Thunderbird 1.0 Ghz 266 fsb axia-y. With the multipliers unlocked from an experiment from some years ago. I know the chip works as i have used it for about 4.5 years untill this morning when my new bits arrived.
I wonder if you would all be kind enough to give me some pointers.
Thanks
Take Care

The mobo boots? Reply from MSI technical support suggested that this mobo does not support T'bird. I'm unable to achieve any POST (using T'bird 1.4GHz, 133 MHz fsb and 1.75Vcore) Sympton is similar to yours earlier. Pls advice how u do it?
I am really sorry but i dont really know what to suggest. Does yours switch  on atall ? Mine didnt.
Off topic: I was installing Gentoo and i got a segmentation fault. I thought, uh oh, Faulty RAM.
Ive am doing some testing right now with memrest86 and Goldmemory, and they both find a load of errors.
Ive not given up and i tried a few bios setting to see if i could make a difference, or whether it was dodgey hardware. But to no avail. Untill i put the memory in Dimm1 and 2, thus taking it out of dual channel mode. So far so good, as far as the mem testing goes.
Ill let you know.
My bios settings for the memory are by SPD and the memory voltages is set to Auto. Safest i thought.
I thought about updating my bios, if it needs it, ill have to check. But i am relectant to just incaser the change decides it doesnt like the t'Bird.
Any thoughts on why i cant (it seems so far, dont wanna speak too soon) run the memory in dual channel mode? Or should i start a new thread ?
Take care all and thanks for all your input.

• XP Install failed on K7N2 Delta-ILSR! Please help!

Hi all
Just wondering if you an lend me a hand here. I have tried to install XP on my new hard disk, and half way though the install (when the GUI has loaded etc.) I generally get a stop error saying there has been a failure in ntfs.sys but I also had an error in IRQ allocation.
I have run memtest and I have received errors in tests 4, 5, 6 and 7 (about 1000 at the end of test 5). The memory I have is 512MB of DDR400 PC3200, Elixir RAM.
The readout on timings from memtest was:
199MHz DDR399          CAS: 3-3-3-8
Do I need to send this memory back (ie is it f**ked?)
Here are the rest of my specs if necessary:
AMD Athlon 1.0GHz (133MHz FSB) (L1 Cache: 128K, L2 Cache: 256K)
PowerBox KY330ATX 350W Max PSU
(Power ratings: +3.3V=15.0A
                          +5V=14.0A
                          +12V=8.0A
                          +5Vsb=2.0A
                          -5V=0.3A
                          -12V=1.0A)
Western Digital Caviar 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache
Radeon 9200Pro AGP8x
Creative Soundblaster Live! 5.1
Anything else I've missed that might affect it, please just tell me.
If I need to adjust RAM timings etc please tell me how to do this.
If I just need to send the RAM back, well, thats easy.
Cheers!
Al Jones

Hi,
Wow! Are these for real? Are you sure you haven't made a mistake?

If they are correct, I'd seriously think about upgrading your PSU!!!
I don't think I've seen a +12v rail (8.0A) as low as this on the forum before!  (or is it a typo and it's really 18?)
General consensus on the forum is that the minimum recommended for these boards are (as a general rule):
+3.3V - 28A
+5V - 35A
+12V - 18A
Also, does your PSU have the extra 12v+ (4-pin) that the K7N2 requires?
This may not be directly responsible for your memory problems (tho' I certainly wouldn't rule it out)!

• RAID not fault tolerant on K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum?

Hi all,
I'd really appreciate your help with this puzzle.....
Got a new mobo & 3k Barton chip.... Installed 'em into rig described in my sig below.
Minimum hardware was installed for this operation:
new mobo & chip
1 gig mem card
CDRW
Floppy drive
SATA drives x2 each on separate SATA port
video card
Entered Bios on 1st boot:
Set SATA to enabled in IDE RAID window
Boot priority to CD Rom for install
Hard disk boot priority to SATA Mirror
F10'ed into NVRAID BIOS:
Set up the RAID as a mirror (RAID 1) with optimal stripe size
cleared & reformatted both discs
Mirror is recognised as healthy on reboot.
Booted into WIN XP SP2 slipstreamed install (this disc has been used successfully before on my previous mobo so I know it works)
Pressed F6 & loaded NV RAID class driver & NV nForce Storage Controller successfully
Did the Windows install routine & this is where it starts to deviate from what is written in the manual....
the request to install the RAID driver during the GUI part of the install never appeared (but this is described as a "might be prompted" in the manual so I wasn't too bothered by its non-appearance) and the driver floppy did spin up at one point so I assumed it had installed each drive automatically
Went into WinXP and finished the install...
Surprisingly, both RAID drives are now visible individually in the systray as removable drives under the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE icon.
Went into Disk Management expecting the Initialize & Convert Disk Wizard to appear but no sign of it: RAID drives are visible as ONE drive (as you would expect) but are NOT fault tolerant.
Things I've done differently each time I installed:
Tried to convert the mirror to a dynamic disc but this also failed every time.
Installed nForce2 system drivers before & after going into Disk Management on different installs
Installed NVRAIDMAN.exe and this reports the mirror as functional & healthy.
Left the floppy in the drive during the GUI part of WIN XP installing itself and removed it on other install
I've read the nvRAID FAQ & this isn't covered by it.
Can't find any reference to the Initialize & Convert Disk Wizard in Microsoft Help & Support, except in a Windows Server 2003 KB article, which I can't find again....
I've repeated the whole process several times to ensure I haven't missed anything, but the end result is always the same.
So I now have a weird mirror array that is not fault tolerant in Windoze Disk Management - is it doing what it's supposed to?
Any ideas??

As it seems you are doing extensive tests, i would suggest a simple one:
install as you have (where the RAID manager tells you it is setup correctly and redundant and windows does not see it as redundant), power off and take one drive off. Reboot and see the result. (it should still work and the controller should tell you that redundancy is not valid anymore)
After that, power off, replug the drive and see if it will reconstruct the array.
Try for the 2nd drive.
Then, you will be sure that redundancy is present...
It seems that with SATA, you can even hotswap the drives (hence the appearance of the drives in the SAFELY remove box).

• INSTALLING FAN on K7N2 Delta - ILSR

finally i got my fan (vantec ccb-a1c) BUT I DONT NO HOW TO INSTALL it cause they didnt give much directions...   what do i do with the 2 heatsinks thermal tape and other stuff... all it says on the package is to put the fan directly on the chip???

this is a shockwave flash for Vantecs install procedure. it doesn't look very difficult!

blazing storm's link is much more detailed - don't think you have to worry about the mounting on the rear on your board, so it should just clip off as shown

• K7n2 Delta II Platinum & PC Alert

Can anyone tell me will PC Alert work with this MoBo and if so why do I not see it on the utilities page of the MSI web site for it?

Thanks for the link Richard. I still don't understand why my mainboard is not linked to this list on the MSI sight or if it is even supported. Also, where do I find an explanation of what all these utilities are? P.S. Iam also shopping for a new mouse and I haven't decided between the Logitech G-7 and the one you use, any insight?

• MSI K7N2 Delta Platinum

I want to update my mother board, I am thinking of getting a K7N2 Delta Platinum has anyone got anything good or bad to say about this board?

Hi Ballie,
I've recently got one of these.
Had a lot of fun installing the operating system etc direct from a K7N2G-ILSR board. Most of them revolved around the fact that the RAID controllers are different so I had no choice but to wipe the discs and do a clean install. BACK EVERYTHING UP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING (yes I'm shouting, so you can hear me....)
I've still not got a proper answer to the problem in this thread yet http:// RAID not fault tolerant on K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum?
, but the board works fine. The overclocking capabilities of the CoreCell technology are very good. I got it up to somewhere in the 2500's before it crashed and then it restarted beautifully at a setting just below the one it went out on, all on it's own.
I'm not running it overclocked presently.
I think my personal preference would be for a board with the Promise RAID controller as it is configurable, whereas nVidia's Raidman is purely a look and see program. If they sorted that out to the same standard as Promise then I would be happy. Obviously, if you don't plan to use RAID that isn't going to be an issue.
Plenty of USB ports, etc. and nice easy colour coded plugs, etc. to make sure you shove them connectors in all the right holes. Has 9 holes for attaching the board to the case, so plugging things like memory chips into it doesn't cause it to bend as much as the less well supported boards. I'd still plug things in on a flat surface before mounting the board though.
The CPU temperature sensor is one of those bendy wire things, so make sure you peel the paper off the underside of the chip and carefully curve the temp wire over into a U shape so that it springs up and presses flat against the underside of the centre part of the chip for best accuracy.
One odd thing - the temperature readings that are active in my CoreCell are CPU and System. The Northbridge temp isn't showing, dunno why... anyone got any suggestions??
A lot of the connectors are concentrated on the right side of the board and this can give rise to a few cable conflicts with things like HDD's getting in the way, but if you have a case with a choice of HDD mounting slots you can easily overcome these minor niggles.
On the whole I like this board. If it does as well as the last board I think I'll be well happy. Hope this has helped you. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

• Windows 98 and K7N2 Delta?

Is there any compatibility issues I should be aware of if I have Windows 98 installed on a K7N2 delta mobo? I will moving to XP soon enough, but I have to use Win 98 for now. When I insert the driver CD than comes with the mobo, and I am told that the set up does not support my OS. Am I in trouble?

Even Microsoft doesn't support 98SE anymore...most manufacturers don't either...time for an upgrade...
