OS is 10.5.8 but I am missing the disk utilities

Somehow I inadvertently (?) deleted the disk utilities program from my machine. The current software version is 10.5.8. How can i get a downloard of the disk utility? Thanks for your help.

Do you have the disks you used to install 10.5 on the PowerBook? If so, you can use a freeware program called Pacifist to extract single components from the installer instead of having to reinstall everything.
Of course, if the PowerBook hard drive is relatively uncluttered with importatnt files at this point, a reinstall would not be painful.
About the most serious scenario I can see at this point--and it's not very serious--is an Archive and Install. It is fairly painless as long as you have plenty of free space on your hard drive. A&I preserves your data files, apps, and settings and refreshes the OS components. Doesn't take very long.
The Archive and Install is available under the Installer options after you boot from the installer disk and start the process like you ar doing a new install. Can't remember--may be labeled "custom Install or something similar.
If you don't have the install disk, this is going to get much harder, as I am not aware of DU being available for download.

Honestly i cannot remember sorry, i got it like 5 maybe 6 yrs ago and just started downloading things to it as the memory on the computer started filling up and when i wanted to see photos/videos on my TV.
My wife did tell me after i had written this post that she did try and record TV to it as it was plugged in. I think by doing so somehow has deleted everything. It reads on my TV yet has no files in it but won't show up on my computer. hope this helps.
Starting to think it is going to cost more to retrieve files on it than it will be to buy a newer and larger one.

I have an old iMac G4 that I want to re-install the OS but don't have the disks. Any idea of where I can find a copy of OS 10.2? I tried installing an 10.4 but the machine won't accept that version of OS X.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
If they no longer stock the very old Panther OS, try eBay but make sure they are retail disks, not some machine-specific update.

The Disk Utility screen has instructions right on it.
Just read them and follow the directions.
Readers can help if you get stuck.
It opens with something like, "select a disk, volume, or image".
You click on your drive in the left column, top item.
The next screen spells out how to do a ( Repair Disk ).
You have a Macintosh. It will not cut your hand off.
If something dangerous is coming, it will say stuff like, "this will erase all the data on your drive. Do you want to proceed?"

Cannot get MacPro to allow me to boot to an alternative boot disk. Can choose in control panel but will not use the disk to boot. Also won't boot using disk selected using option key

My primary boot disk is encrypted as is a secondary boot disk (backup) but I cannot boot using any other disk. System 10.8.5, MacPro 4.1.
All disks mount using primary boot disk. All disks check out as OK and I have repaired permissions.
When I choose in the control panel the Mac boots but will always use my original boot disk.
When I select the disk using the option key at startup, the boot process stalls with a grey screen and a spinning cursor.

Still trying to figure this out. I erased the drive, did a format using disk util and then re-installed the system but I still cannot get the disk used as a startup drive. I also tried an external firewire drive and it won't allow me to boot from it either.
I can choose it starting up with the option key but it just gives me a blue screen and the spinning cursor.
If I select it in the startup pref pane it boots into my other startup drive only.

I have been working around proI am advised to reinstall Lion. I don't have a recovery disk, I downloaded it but screwed up making the disk. Can anyone tell me how to get this.

I have had a number of problems since installing Lion on my iMac and am going to try reinstalling. I can't seem to find the recovery disk material from the App store. I downloaded it but think I should have copied the disk image rather than trying to open it as an App. You live and learn eh!

The Lion Recovery disk is accessed by booting while holding down the command-r keys. To do a reinstall you do need an internet connection.

Partitioned drive with "Apple Partition Map" but installer says that the disk is not bootable

and refuses to install 10.5 on it.
I have an external drive hooked up to an eMac. The plan is to install 10.5 on the drive, and then put the drive into a G4 powerbook.
I booted the eMac from the 10.5 retail install disk, partitioned the external drive into 1 partition, with the 'Apple Partition Map' option selected in the options. But when I go to try to install onto the disk, it has a red X and says that the computer can not boot off of the device so it refuses to install.
Can anybody tell me what step(s) I missed?

The choice I selected was "Mac OS extended (Journaled)" which I think is HFS+journaled -- or at least none of the other choices on the pull-down looked remotely correct.

I am trying to download windows 7 on my macbook pro but it keeps saying the disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.

Its all in the title. I am trying to use bootcamp to download windows 7 on my macbook pro mountain lion, but I keep getting this error. I tried going to Disk Utility, and my active volume already is formatted under Mac OS Extended (Journaled), so I don't know how to fix it. I already backed up the volume on an external harddrive. Also, everything under the volume I wanted to edit is greyed out, and when I try to restore the backup that I created via time machine, it pops up with another error that says "Could not unmount volume "/" (Resource Busy).
Please be gentle, I'm used to using windows and don't know like anything about computers. If someone could give me a detailed explanation for these errors and a solution of how I could correctly download windows on my mac I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Try a restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Trying to instal a new hard drive in my old macbook pro laptop but it wont recognize the disk to install osx

I want to give my old macbook pro away as a gift & bought a 250 GB SATA internal hard drive and installed it, then popped in the osx install disk. When I start it up it begins well, but when it gets to the point to install the software on the drive, the drive simply doesnt show up on the menu to be chosen to instal the software.
The cables are on right and should be working well, so I don't understand why this brand new, never used hard drive doesn't allow the software to mount. Thanks for the help!

How about an exact model number, there are a lot of 250G Toshiba drives, but even if it is formatted for Windows it should not be necessary to remove it just to format it.

I was recently able to attach files in gmail using Firefox, but now I get an unresponsive link, when I click "upload". It works fine on other browsers. I search the question database but perhaps I missed the fix. Any suggestions?

I am using windows 7 Home Premium, on an HP. I use and enjoy the Firefox browser. The only major extension that could cause clicking issues is possibly NoScript. But until recently I have had no problems with uploading attachments in Gmail through Firefox.
The issue:
I start Gmail. Logging in is fine. When I compose a new message (still no problem) I can't upload any attachment via the attachment link. I click the attach link and it is unresponsive. I use internet explorer and I get no issues. I've noticed this issue only since yesterday. Please help.

I also had this problem since yesterday (march, 13). I tried cleaning cache and cookies, restarting the browser and the pc, but nothing happened. With IE and Chrome the attachment worked fine.
I hoped that with the yesterday's 3.6.28 updade it would be fixed, but it didn't.
Then, I saw the reply to [http://support.mozilla.org/pt-BR/questions/922873 THIS SIMILAR PROBLEM] which was telling to use the refresh button on FIREFOX (not Gmail's refresh). I tried, and the problem was gone.
So, if anybody has the same issue, try hitting the refresh button on firefox :)

you can try and call apple sales 1.800.my.apple. but that is a long shot. You will most likely need to purchase the retail disk on the secondary market and the 10.5 disk is very expensive, and I don't believe it will contain the applications.
