OS Lion and spinning beach ball

I am trying to install flash player. It downloads fine I am using a MacBook Pro with Lion.My web b
rowser is safari 5.1. I get a spinning beachball when I try to do the next step when I see the folder on my desktop. Thanks for your help.

So, is it hanging (spinning beachball) when you double click on the "Install Adobe Flash Player" icon or when you double click on the .dmg file? If it's the .dmg, can you try downloading from here to see if it makes a difference?
Where can I find direct downloads of Flash Player for Windows or Macintosh?
If it's when clicking "Install Adobe Flash Player", please try the following steps:
1. Right click on "Install Adobe Flash Player" and select "Show Package Contents".
2. Navigate into the /Contents/Resources/ folder and double click the Adobe Flash Player.pkg file.

Slow and spinning beach balls after 10.8.2 update

After the initial install of ML 10.8 for the most part the sytem seemed to run fine. Very few snags. But after the 10.8.1 and now the 10.8.2 updates I am finding slower and slower times for programs to boot and waiting to be able to type anything and spinning beach balls all the time. I have noticed this continuously bringing up the contacts program, MS word, Pages, Apple Mail etc. Initial booting of the computer is slower as well and often has a frozen beach ball for a minute or so before it unfreezes and proceeds. Also huge slow down in printing from my wifi printer which before was super fast. I have reset the SMC, Pram, did disk permission repairs and all of those items. Nothing has changed anything. This is a early 15" 2011 MBP unit with 8 gig of ram, 750 gig hard drive with only 250 gig in use, 2.2 I7 processor and Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB. All software is updated to latest versions. This slower and slower and waiting thing is getting continuously worse all the time and very annoying. If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions to find a solution. Thanks much.

Seems we have a lot of people with simular problems but a lot of different combonations. Cleaning caches, reseting Pram, taking almost everything out of login items even using a program to defrag the unit, (mine is not a SSD drive), making sure all apps etc. are up to date and are ML ok etc. I have all done. I even had the unit tested by the Gen. Bar guys to make sure the hardware was ok including the drive even though I was pretty sure it was as I did not have this problem before ML. All checked out fine. I have not in the past had any problem with Time Machine backups but?????????? I only use a usb external and plug it in when I want to do a back up so it is not doing the backup thing all the time. I have thought of doing the erase and clean install which will be a huge amount of work but I have read many postings saying they have done that and it did not solve the problem so reluctant to do that if in the end I will spend two days for nothing? Could go back to SL or Lion as I have bootable backups but why should I have to do this on a year old MBP to make it work properly? Seems there ought to be a solution on this but Apple does not seem to have one? As I said in my original post all seemed good for the first month of ML then it began going down hill and has continued to ever since. I did notice last night that something strange seemed to help for a little while. I loged out of the unit as I have auto login and when I relogged in all seemed much quicker and better but today it has started to slow down again? I know everyone with this problem would like a solution!

Macbook pro has slowed considerably and spinning beach ball appears lots

My Macbook pro has slowed considerably and spinning beach ball appears lots recently.
After I installed 10.5.7 it started happening. When I open anything including system prefs and apple apps the ball appears. I'm on 10.5.8 and it seems to be either as slow or slower. Startup is a bit faster now, but it'll go to the beach ball before I even do anything remotely intensive on the system.
My computer is almost 3 years old but I don't install any weird software on it and have 30% of my system disk free. I'm an audio guy and use logic, pro tools and generally keep my computer clean.
I've tried starting another user account to check if its my original user that has the issue, but thats just as slow too.

Oh yeah, I repaired disk permissions too but it hasn't seemed to have changed anything

I have just tried that and Disk Utility said my MAc HD appears to be ok....????
So I don't really understand what else I can do...
I tried using Onyx a couple of months ago but it seemed to make things worse and more temperamental.
If there is a next level of solutions I could try it would be much appreciated.

Just ran a recent update, and computer woke up with plain blue screen and spinning beach ball, was it the update that made the computer crash?

just ran a recent update for my macbook pro/mid 2010, and the computer just woke up with a plain blue screen & spinning beach ball - I had to do a hard shut down.
I am also having the problem of having my screen going black for a couple of seconds, I read up on it in Support. But I was wondering if there is something else going on.
Any ideas?

How to solve Macbook slowdown and spinning beach ball issue

I've only had my Macbook Pro for one year so far, so it's JUST outside of warranty by about a month. Over the last few months or so, I've noticed it start to lag when opening applications or loading files. Sometimes webpages will cause a spinning beach ball which will then take around a minute or two before it kicks into life again.
I'm wondering if there's any reason for this or what I can do to clear up the issue? I've still got over half the amount of hard disk space available on my laptop, so I'm assuming it's not to do with that, and I can't see anything in activity monitor that stands out as being a true culprit of this. Is it just typical slowdown caused by having a lot of programs installed over time?
I usually find it happens more when I'm trying to load another program or do simultaneous projects at once. However, although I only occasionally turn off my laptop fully (it's usually in standby for most of the time) I find initial startup time when loading the laptop up takes longer than it should when it's logged in to settle down. I'm guessing this could be the number of things I have on startup but I'm not sure if there's anything I could remove that would speed up the issue.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Lots of Freezes and Spinning Beach Balls

Just recently my PowerBook G4 12" 1.42 began acting up. I can barely do anything without getting a screen freeze or spinning beach ball. I can't open folders, click or scroll, copy or paste, or almost anything without a very very long wait, up to several minutes of SWOD. Sometimes the screen won't do anything except move the mouse cursor.
I tried Disk Utility Repair Permissions, and it got hung up for about an hour and then the computer became unresponsive, and I had to shut down by holding the power button. I tried resetting PRAM with no luck.
I noticed the problem after the latest software update about 4 days ago. Up till then, all my software was updated pretty recently, within a few weeks.

1. you have a 12" PB g4, which has been around since 10.2 or 10.3 Since then, how have you upgraded your OS? Was it an update, archive & install, or erase & install? if all your updates have been upgrades, it may be time to wipe your hard drive and start fresh. If there was any corruption with previous versions of OS X, they will be there when you upgrade.
From time to time, I completely erase my hard drive and reinstall everything. yes, it's a pain to do but i know that it will keep my computer running smoothly.
2. Your directory might be screwed up. You can try to fix it by rebooting your computer and when it's rebooting, hold down the Apple key (command) and the "S" key (command + S), which will boot you into Single User Mode. Type in "fsck -fy" (without quotes) at the prompt. This runs a file system check. If your directory is out of whack, this can fix it. You may have to run it a few times until it no longer reports any errors with the directory.
3. If your directory is really screwed up, I would suggest you buy Disk Warrior.
It sounds like your OS may be corrupted or your directory is screwed up.
Other things to check is to see how much available space is on your hard drive. If it's less than 2 gigs, this could explain why you are having problems.

Is Spotlight making those grinding noises and spinning beach balls?

Since newly installing Snow Leopard I am finding myself getting delays and if I persist in trying to do work it results in spinning beach balls. All the while I hear grinding noises.
I am guessing it is Spotlight trying to do its work. But I'd like to know for sure.
I am trying to use Activity Monitor but, as usual, am having little success as I have never figured out the best way to use it that gives me any useful info. For instance, I'd like to see what is most active (and likely causing the grinding and spinning). With %CPU selected everything moves so fast, and names of things are too arcane for me to understand. If spotlight is in there it's not clear to me.
For now, I am using the Spotlight privacy settings to stop it from touching any of my internal drives - so I can get some work done.
Is there a manual on-off control for Spotlight?

Allan. Grinding noises aside, did you write anything else in your reply? I see two horizontal lines with nothing on them.
*Installing SL was an indirect result of my having to trash two internal drives and install two new ones; reinstall an OS; then rebuilt my working computer and making Time Machine back ups. Along the way I opted to purchase and upgrade one to SL. I don't think the noises I described as grinding are bad drive. Somaybe they're not exactly "grinding." Perhaps "ticking."

IMac bootup issues and spinning beach ball of death.

Hello Hello.
So I was recently given a brand new iMac 27inch by Apple, due to the death of my 2008 24inch iMac. Everything has been going great with it until today. I restarted it at some point this afternoon, and ever since then it has been acting quite strange. First thing i've noticed is that when I boot it up, when it gets to the white screen with the gray apple logo and the spinning thing, there is now a transparent rounded rectangle bar at the bottom of the screen for a minute or so...which was never the case before. Then, if it decides to proceed to OSX (sometimes it wont), the beach ball of death never stops spinning, which of course means i can do pretty much nothing. On top of that, it will not connect to the internet...my Macbook Pro connects fine to the wifi, so I know it's not my service. Bottom line, I have no idea what is going on. I've had it only for a couple of months, and haven't really had any problems until now. I'm hoping I'll just wake up in the morning and everything will be back to normal...
Any ideas?

I was able to get 'places' working on my Mac Pro by opening a library I created on my Macbook Pro (no crashing experienced in that install from the start) that contained a single geotagged image. The function works fine even after deleting the image, it just seemed to need the location data to get it kicking. I was creating a new library (since started as a trial) and was not upgrading an version 2 library.
There is obviously a bug here that needs addressing though.

Mail and spinning beach ball

I run Mail, main window opens, downloads few emails, the beach ball shows up and endlessly spins

Hello Tom,
I see that nobody has attempted an answer. Therefore, even though I don't know a solution for certain, I'll tell you what I'd try in these circumstances.
First I'd check the size of my mailboxes. Although System X looks after memory allocations automatically, it might be a good idea to streamline things by clearing out unwanted mails, and by emptying the caches associated with Mail. One can do this manually (they are in Your User Folder/Library/Caches); but I prefer to use a programme such as Onyx.
I looked through the Apple Discussions to see if there was anything similar; and there are one or two. So, you might find it interesting to read the thread started by Mike Orcutt on October 3 last. This can be found if you search the Mail portion of the Discussions using these terms in the search box — Download stops spinning
The same search will bring up a number of other things you might explore.

Plists and Spinning Beach Ball?

After installing the Snow Leopard upgrade on my mini (2009), almost all programs run slower than they did under Leopard and the SBB is displayed for 10 to 60 seconds before the programs even display their first window.
When the mini is first booted, it is not too bad, but the more time has passed since the boot, the more things seem to slow down.
I see suggestions in other threads about deleting plists to improve performance.
Is it safe to just delete all the plists or are there some that need to remain?

So far today we've had a teacher who can't spell and someone doing their Masters and has left it till the last minute to try and unravel themselves from some indeterminate problem they have trouble explaining, just the usual usual who seem to think they have got onto the Psychic Support Hot Line.

I am having trouble with a LaCie 526 monitor working with my new Mac Pro. When I boot up, I see the sign-in screen for a second, then it disappears, reappears with some of the screen pixelated and the spinning beach ball -- and then freezes. Any thoughts

The LaCie is connected via DVI to thunderbolt adapter. It had been working, and then when I switched off the computer and restarted several days later, I see the signon screen flash quickly, followed by nothing, followed by the signon screen and spinning beach ball and it simply freezes. Any thoughts?

Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Problem with Spinning Beach Balls

I am hoping someone can help me diagnose my issue and help me understand the log below. About every other month on my MBP I run into system slow down and spinning beach balls. I run disk utility and it tells me my disk is corrupted and needs to be repaired. I run Disk Warrior and the disk is repaired and problem goes away. For awhile. Only to return in a month or two. Getting tiring to have to keep doing this.
I needed to repair it again this am. The log of Disk Warrior (copied below) seems to suggest something is wrong with a file called .Mobilebackups under the HD. When I search the HD I cannot find this file nor do I do any mobile backups of my phone. How can I permanently resolve this?

(Mountain) Lion and its endless spinning beach ball.

These cats like beach balls a lot.
I really hate to complain about any Apple product because this company really care about details and user experience. But this Lion thing is enough for me. Since I installed Lion on my computer, my work became a frustration. The computer decreased its speed 70% at least. Switching between applications became a torture while watching desperately the beach ball spinning endlessly until the solicited window draws completely. Numbers and Pages spend the time saving and saving taking from four to ten seconds each time while annoying me and stopping me from finishing my work and taking me out of concentration every five minutes or so. It's a hateful nuisance. The icons in Launchpad linger to draw, all I see for several seconds are their dotted frames until they want to appear. The whole machine freezes completely while the spinning beach ball spins happily and eternally until I force quitting application by application or reboot the computer at once, turning it off and on again for the third time this day, and the fifteenth time this week. Fixing privileges and cmd+alt+P+R don't work.
I beared all this torture for months hoping Mountan would fix this mess. Oh, poor of me, such a naive user; the hours and hours downloading the upgrade with a child-like heart who expect to be given a wished gift were useless and disappointing. The result is the same or worse if I dare to use iCloud.
So well. Fortunately for me, I had bought Tiger on disc a long ago... I'll draw back this weekend until Apple DO SOMETHING with this lazy Lion. For my part, the 200+ Mountain Lion features are totally useless and a spent of money and disk space if I can't even switch between applications without groaning or if I can't finish my Page/Numbers work on schedule and without disturbances.
My opinion: Mac OS X is a beautiful operating system but, for productivity purposes, stay away from Lion in any version. Because when you finish fixing all its mess, you will have lost your temper, your job or became insane, or all at once. It doesn't worth the while, better you invest the time with your family.

Open Activity Monitor and kill this process - rapportd.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
