OS randomly sees my mouse click, doesn't do anything

I've had a problem for the past few months that's been driving me crazy.  Often, but inconsistenly, I will click on something and nothing happens.  More often than not I will be in Mail.app and will click to reply to an email.  I hear my mouse click, the click target turns dark to acknowledge my click, and then... nothing.  If I click on another email, it will come up fine.  If I click back on the original email and click on Reply it will dutifully pop out the email for me to type my response.  The same thing will sometimes happen in Safari.  If I have multiple tabs open, sometimes I will click on the close tab button, but it does nothing.  If I click on another tab, then click back to my original tab and then click the close tab button the tab closes like it should have originally.  Yesterday it got just absurd.  With the Apple.com site up I could click on any link and nothing would happen.  Like with mail, the color of the button on the page would darken to indicate that I clicked, but it wouldn't go there.  If I right-clicked and chose Open In New Tab it worked fine.  Other webpages in other tabs worked fine.  If I closed that tab and reopened the site, it was still broken.  Only after a wipe and restore did the site start working again.
Then, as if almost just to mess with me, in Terminal it will frequently register a click as a double-click.  I know it's a single click, I hear only one click of the mouse.  I'm having to constantly close the inspector window that pops up when it sees my "double-click" that is a single click.  It will randomly happen in other places as well.
Being a problem without an error code or message or easy way to describe, I haven't had any luck in any searches for people reporting the same problem.
I'm using a Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.3.  The problem has been around after multiple OS updates didn't seem to appear after any particular change made to the computer.
I've been a 'computer guy' for a long time, used most mainstream OSes since Windows for Workgroups, so I know my way around.  I've been using a Mac as my main computer for 7-8 years now.  I've already done a complete wipe and restore of the computer (using Time Machine).  I have an investment of time in the apps and data on my computer (my work computer to boot) so I am loathe to do a nuke-and-pave solution of resintalling everything from scratch instead of from a backup.  My hope is that there is someone else out there who had this problem and figured it out that might save me that trouble (and save my sanity).  These kinds of intermittent, nonsense issues are the worst.
Thanks to anyone who reads this and helps.

Sorry it took so long macjack.  I ran down to a Best Buy and grabbed a cheap-o wired mouse.  Unfortunately I had gotten so used to the large size of my usual mouse that I found it's small size almost unusable.  Last night I got another, better mouse.  At first, everything seemed fine.  This morning I was replying to an email and I clicked on the Reply All button and nothing happened.  Same thing as before, the button darkens on click, like the OS is seeing my mouse click, but nothing happens.
So far though, since switching to the new mouse I have not had an instance of the double-clicks that should be single-clicks and vice-versa.  I'll give it a couple of more days before I declare that problem squared away.  Perhaps I was having an OS issue as well as a mouse issue.
I'm trying to decide if I should try another user account first, or safe-mode.  Being this is my work computer, both are going to be difficult to try without impacting productivity.

• Buggy mouse cursor position (Jumps around to random spot on mouse click)

I've only noticed this annoying quirk in photoshop CS4. This only happens when using the tools in photoshop, and not in any other programs.
When using the tools in photoshop, every so often, some times more often then others, the tools will jump to a random place on (and many times FARE off) screen on mouse click. As in the tool is no longer where my mouse is, but is registering elsewheer.
A few examples. Working with the pen tool to line something, click a control point to set it, go to click to set another one and that point is now being dragged around well off my screen even though the mouse pointer is on screen.
Using the brush tool to color something in and click and the brush is coloring fare above my curser.
Select something and the selection is jumping here and there each time, go to crop? Click and drag and the grabed part jumps off screen.
It is random as to when it wants to jump, and where it wants to jump. Some times it happens all the time, others every so often, or times not at all,.
No settings are ever changed reguarding the mouse, it's just random and ONLY in photoshop with using it's tools. My mouse it's self is not jumping, just where the tool is drawing/putting down whatever is.
This jumping also seems to be a rather common thing, as I stream my drawing live at times and when it starts doing this I've had many people comment and remark that their copy also does the same thing. Posting a journal entry about it also resaulted in a lot of replies with people facing the same thing.
Is this a bug in CS4? People have told me to check my mouse settings under the control panel but that shouldn't have anything to do with it when every other program I use does not do this yet photoshop does. Flash don't, dreamweaver don't, illustrator don't. Painter, bryce, max, etc etc none of them do it. Only photoshop and only when I am using a tool. It's effects are still random.

Hi,
I have the same problem as well. I don't think it's related to the mouse hardware at all- on mine the mouse curser stays in the same position but Photoshop registeres is elsewhere! If I let go (of holding the mouse button), the mouse is still where I left it. I've had this problem since Photoshop CS4 x64 but the problem still happens on Photoshop CS5 x64 (it was fine at first but after about a month of use now CS5 has started having the same problem).
I've had the problem for a while (almost a year now) and is really annoying! I dont have any tablets, and I've changed my mouse a few times. I am using a laptop with Windows Ultimate x64. It only happens in photoshop, it's fine in Adobe InDesign.
Hopefully someone might come up with a solution!
Thanks to anyone who can help me/us

• Pressing cntrl+left mouse click doesn't select multiple rows.

Hi,

• Middle Mouse Click Doesn't Scroll

I haven't installed anything lately, but all of a sudden my middle click mouse button (when I click it down) doesn't work. Before when I click it down, the little arrow thing would pop up and I would be able to scroll up and down if I move my mouse up and down. What is wrong? I didn't find anything in the System Preferences thing and I tried to install their software today, but to no avail. I can still scroll if I turn the wheel, but I want the middle click scroll to work again. So does anyone know how to fix this issue and restore the little up and down arrow thing? Thanks in advance. Note: Mouse is a Logitech Wheel Mouse M/N: M-BJ58
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.0 GHz

maybe someone else out there who has the mouse can shed some light on if theirs is working.
id try repairing permissions, if you haven't, doubt it could be that, but it never hurts. other than that, I would wait doing anything like an archive/install or reverting firmware till someone else can verify that it wasn't just broken by an update.

• Mouse clicking disappears

For some reason, my Macbook has suddenly decided to stop accepting any form of clicking.
The trackpad works in the scroll up and down, but tapping doesn't register a click and neither does pressing the actual click button below the trackpad.
I thought it may have been the trackpad that has broken, but when I plugged in an external mouse, it's the same - you can move the mouse around, but just not click.
PRAM etc has been reset, but it still doesn't want to recognise a mouse click from any device, whether it be the built in trackpad or an external mouse.
Re-install help? I thought at first a hardware error, but with an external mouse giving the same results, could it be software?

I have a simmilar problem, but in my case the mouse clicking doesn't disappear completely. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time the mouse refuses to work when surfing the web. It doesn't matter if I use Safari or Firefox, I'm not able to click on some of the links - other links work fine. After a reboot the working and not working links get shuffled, different links work and different links don't work. I have this problem with the mouse as well as with the trackpad. It also seems to depend on screen area - sometimes, when I click on a certain link it refuses to work unless I click on a different area of the same link.

• Right-click add track to playlist doesn't do anything

About 90% of the time (iTunes 12) trying to add tracks to existing playlists via right-click doesn't do anything.  No error message, but the track just doesn't get added.  I think this mostly happens when adding multiple tracks at once, not sure.  Clicking on the little circle and adding to playlist that way, on the other hand, seems to work for the one track but ignores all the other tracks you have selected and only adds that one track.
Is this a known bug?  Does it only happen to me?
I have to resort to always selecting all the tracks I want to add, then choose 'create new playlist from selection'.  This always works. Then I have to copy (drag-and-drop) the entries from that new playlist to the playlist I actually wanted the tracks in, and then delete the new unnecessary playlist.  It's an unnecessary amount of work.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

• My iMac doesn't recognize mouse clicks... HELP!

Ok, I reset the SMC and PRAM (and repaired permissions)that made the mouse work until I shut down then I would have the problem again when I started up so I would have to zap the PRAM again.  I downloaded Mountain Lion and loaded it thinking this would overwrite any errors but now I can't log in at all. Even zapping the PRAM can't get it to recognize mouse clicks (the courser does move) .  Somebody please give me some advice I have total work stopage and I'm desperate!

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

My magic mouse behaves erratically with intermittent problems - slows down, right click doesn't work, disconnects for a few seconds then reconnects. Anyone suggest what I could do to fix this?

I just figured out the print quality issue for my wife with her new iMac and new printer.
She replaced both at once and she couldn't understand why her Artisan 730 was lower quality then her Epson R280 when they had the same specs.
Turns out the newer printer had the option to connect via wifi which we used during setup.
The driver options are completely different depending on how you connect.
Once I connected via USB the correct options were available and the print quality was better.
Looking at the R2400 it dies not have wifi, but while researching the problem for my wife someone esle was having an issue updating to the latest printer driver.
If you go into the print utility from the Printer and Scanner system preference and under the general tab you should have driver 5.5.
One user had to delete the old printer driver before Software Update loaded the newer printer driver.

On my MacBook Pro (w Snow Leopard) I always had to reconnect my wifi at home when it woke up. I upgraded my router from an old Netgear to a newer N D-Link and stopped having to do that.
I would be surprised you would have that problem with an Airport Extreme, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for it.

• Mouse wheel click doesn't open new tabs correctly?

Since upgrading to FF4, whenever I mouse click a bookmark on my bookmark toolbar, it will open a blank new tab with the URL in the address line, but will not load the page. I have to select the URL in the address line and press enter, or press the green arrow button. Shouldn't web pages automatically load once I mouse wheel click on a bookmark?
any suggestions?

Alan McClean has alluded to the cause of this behaviour but I think others would benefit from a full explanation because it doesn't appear to be documented. I might add that Business Objects support were no help at all on this (they suggested I had a problem with my mouse, PC or network which I don't).
Normal response to a mouse double-click on a document name in InfoView XI3:
The double-click action performs the default action on the right-click list. This is the option you see in bold when you right-click on a document name. The default action is 'View' document. So when you double-click on the document it opens for viewing.
In CMC, under Applications>InfoView if you set 'Default viewing action on listing page:' to 'View the latest successful instance of the object' then the double-click behaviour changes:
The double-click action now tries to open the latest successful instance of a document. I found that any document in my Inbox or any document with instances (e.g. scheduled report) will still open for viewing using the double-click. For any other document the double-click fails silently. I assume this is because there simply isn't a latest instance to open.
Conclusions:
1. Don't use the 'View the latest successful instance of the object'. I have reset my CMC setting back to 'View the object'.
2. I think Business Objects should change the double-click behaviour so that rather than fail silently it opens the document.

• Magic Mouse stops clicking randomly: need to right click desktop few times.

For some reason, randomly, my Magic Mouse will stop clicking/registering clicks (left or right/anything but movement) and I'll have to right click on the desktop 1-2 times for it to "come back to life"...it's very strange. I've tried readding it, etc. to no avail...?

I ended up here after experiencing the same problem (seemingly random and intermittent inability to scroll with Magic Mouse or trackpad when using Firefox) and searching Mozilla and Apple support forums. There are a few separate reports in both communities that refer to the issue seeming to exist only when using Firefox with a Magic Mouse. There are, of course, other threads that don't have that specific combination, but the original post is not a unique occurrence.
In my own case, I am experiencing this problem on two MacBook Pros. I did not have this problem until recently. Also recently I bought a Magic Mouse but have no idea how significant that is (the trackpad also becomes unresponsive on both machines). It does seem unlikely to be coincidence, but still could be, of course. Like most people now, I guess, I gave up manual updating of Firefox a while ago to spare myself the constant reminders and so I don't know what version exactly I had when this started but it is now 31.0 (although Firefox is just waiting for me to quit in order to update to 32.0).
If I quit and reopen Firefox, all is well for a while but then the problem returns. I can still scroll by dragging the scroller in the scroll bar (thankfully not completely gone, as yet) and appreciate the comment about using the up arrow and down arrow keys, which I hadn't thought to do. It seemed to be only one of my MacBooks for a few days, but now seems to be both. Somewhat bizarrely, while concluding this post, Firefox on both computers has resumed scrolling without, as far as I can recall, a restart. I'll aim to give an update after a day or two (as so many final posts say...)

• My left mouse click randomly quits on both my iMac mouse and my wacom tablet.  How can I fix this?

Throughout the day the left mouse click quits.  I can right click with my mouse but not left click.  It happens on my wacom mouse, the pen mouse AND my iMac mouse that was bought with the computer.  Restarting or completely shutting down the computer does not get it to reboot. It will come back randomly too.  It's so odd and I do not have an explination why this is happening.
I've looked for software updates but can not find any on the apple site OR wacom site.
Please help?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

• Mouse Clicks stop working randomly

So far I have noticed several times on my Quad Core 27 inch imac that the mouse clicks stop working.  This is with two different mice, plugged in together, so I know it's not mouse or driver related.  It happens to both of them whenever it does happen.
The only correlation I can make is that it usually happens when I am on a website.  I might even have noticed a correlation with "flash based" modules and components on websites, but this could be speculation at this point.
Apple, I love you, but having to hard restart my $2000 computer because the mouse is inoperable is unacceptable.  Figure this out.  There is no excuse for this.  PC's don't do this.  I've never had a computer do this in my entire life and words cannot describe how frustrating it is, especially when you are in the middle of trying to get some work done...
-Matt

Try hitting the escape key on the keyboard (ESC). I've noticed that some property sheets, dialogs, and context menus can get 'lost' if you change focus to another program intentionally or accidentally, or if an application 'steals focus' (fairly rare in OS X). You may have to Command + Tab between applications to find where things are 'hung up'. Flash seems especially bad about hanging after a right click tries to call up a context menu.

• JEditorPane - mouse click simulation doesn't work

Hi all,
I have a little problem with my JEditorPane. I want to implement the posibility to put signs on a document loaded in a jeditorpane and save them. One solution is to save the position of the scrollbar, but because the font size can be changed it will not be working. So I want to simulate a cmouse click on the first row of text from viewport to put there the caret and take after that his position. The problem is that the simulation for the mouse click donesn,t work. The event is simulated, but the caret position is not changing.
I tried also using Robot class, but this implementation give me a serie a mouse events and it moves the cursor to the requested position and it's not the behaviour that I want.

If tou run this code you can observe that when the "PUSH" button is pressed the jeditorpane receives a mouseclick event, but the caret position is not changing.
Strange is that when you click with the mouse over the editor pane the caret position is changed and I don't understand what is wrong.
Can you help me You can use viewToModel() method to get caret position for x, y location. No need to click.
