  • How do I create more space on Time Machine backup disk?

How do I create more space on Time Machine backup disk?

since time machine in Snow Leopard stops backing up when there's no more space on the disk,
That is has not been my experience, and does not appear to be agree with this Time Machine documentation:
    Backup drive fills up
As your backup drive begins to fill up to its capacity, Time Machine intelligently deletes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones (and will alert you if the "Notify after old backups are deleted" option is selected in Time Machine preferences).

  • Partitioned external hard drive for creating the USB bootable device

    Hi all,
I want to install Win 7 on my Macbook Pro (OS X Yosemite 10.10.1) but I don't have an 8GB or larger USB flash driver. I do have an external hard drive of 500GB that I use for backup. So, I tried to create a small partition on this disk to create the USB bootable device required for the windows installation but apparently I'm not able to select any specific partition when the boot camp assistant ask me for the destination disk.
    Is that normal?
    Thanks.

    Yes, you can do that.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • "Recovery system can't be created" error when reinstalling Lion from recovery system

I get the infamous OS installation error "Install failed... because a recovery system can't be created" – but in fact, the recovery system already exists, since I'm installing from it, and incidentally, I've previously already used it for an Internet reinstallation. I've tried about a half dozen iterations now.
Here's the exact sequence of events:
    Reboot on recovery drive.
Select option to reinstall the OS from the network.
License agreement, etc; then select drive -> install -> sign into Apple store.
"Downloading additional components" message. 1st attempt consistently fails at this stage, need to restart at step 2.
Download for roughly 20 minutes, then automatic reboot -> "Installing Mac OS X".
After about 10 minutes: "Install failed. Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer. Mac OS X can't be installed on the disk ..., because a recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more."
I've pawed through innumerable posts of people who have gotten the same error message, but haven't found one that reproduces my circumstances. I've reviewed the KB articles "OS X: About OS X Recovery" and "OS X Lion: Installer reports This disk cannot be used to start up your computer", with no luck. Based on a suggestion in the second KB article, I've reduced the primary partition size by roughly a GB and retried - no luck.
See this thread if you want to know why I'm reinstalling the OS, even though it's (more or less) functioning and I have Time Machine backups. It would also make me feel a lot better to know that the reinstallation would work in case of real need. Thanks in advance for any help.

    John,
I think I'm "reinstalling OS X by booting OS X Recovery": I reboot with command-R depressed, or I reboot with Alt depressed and choose the recovery parition, and then I start the installation process from the list of things I can do. Are we talking about the same thing?
    Yes, exactly.
I think that OS X Internet Recovery would be necessary only if you were to attempt a Lion installation with a completely empty HD, implying that even a Recovery partition has not been created. Your USB flash drive is the way to cope in that circumstance. If you can install Lion by booting the recovery partition as you described, it seems to me that it is all that is necessary and there is nothing to fix, despite the error message you see.
I'm surprised that Internet Recovery works at all, given that your Mac is not one of those allegedly eligible to use it.
Without a similar 2006 iMac to test, I can only speculate that the "abysmal distribution system" as baltwo describes it just doesn't work well with earlier Macs, and that Apple may not have tested it extensively with them. If I were you I would rely upon that USB installer much more than OS X Recovery or OS X Internet Recovery. I prefer not to rely upon any installation method that can possibly result in "the server is not available at this time" or such nonsense, but that is the direction in which Apple has been going for a long time.
An OS X installation log exists at /var/log/ that you can examine using Console, probably named "install.log". Deciphering it is another challenge.

  • Can't creat a USB Flash key to recover my BIOS

Hi, i've been struggling for a week to make my Notebook back.
From what I've read, I need to make a BIOS recovery from a USB, but I can't get to make this USB key. I'm using a Cruzer Force 32gb Sandisk Pendrive. But the Bios recovery software doesn't recognize it.
I've already tried formatting the drive with FAT32 and rename it to HP_TOOLS. My laptop's recovery partition is missing.
Does it have any limitations? I'm talking about drive size or something else.
My warranty has already expired and I'd like to solve this myself.
    Thanks in advance for reading.

    Hi @Facu8990 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Notebook and needing to create recovery usb drive. Here is a link to show you how.
Microsoft only allows 1 copy or USB to be created.
Do you receive an error message or number?

  • No boot disk after creating a USB bootable device with Bootcamp Assistant.

Hi people, i was trying to install windows on my Mac Pro 4,1. I had to modify the Info.plist in Bootcamp Assistant to be able to make a bootable usb, after choosing and creating the bootable usb my mac rebooted and after i got into a black screen saying "no bootable device"...i tried Win7 and Win8.1 on 2 different USB sticks without any luck. Any ideas? Thank you!

Disregard this message.  I give up.

  • How do i create a windows 7 iso from a disk

I've got a late 2012 iMac 27" plus a Superdrive.  Bootcamp will not recognize the superdrive during install so I'm stuck with figuring out how to get an iso disk image.  I have a Windows 7 install disk & have used Disk Utility to burn an image, but that isn't recognized by Boot Camp.  Went to Microsoft and am unable to find an ISO.

iMac recognizes the superdrive just fine, however, the version of Bootcamp assistant that ships with the machine assumes that you won't have access to a DVD drive so it wants to take an iso image and make a bootable USB from the iso.  Unfortunately it won't do it from the DVD in the Superdrive.  Going to Microsoft is a waste these days, because all they want do is sell me Windows 8...

  • I can't create a USB bootable Windows in Boot Camp Mavericks

In Lion I was able to modify the file info.plist in the Package of bootcamp...

In Mavericks i try to remove it and bootcamp crash when i'm trying to start the program.
I also can't read or burn any CD or DVD except if its a real DVD Movie.

Thank you for this.  Unfortunantly Boot Camp Assistant still crashes.  In the list or now USBSupportedDevices it lists out the models like this:

                        <string>iMac12,2</string>

I have a MacbookPro8,2.  Can I add it to the list or is it included?  I have replaced my superdrive with a hard drive and only have an external CD drive now.  Thanks in advance!

  • Can't install the OS--Recovery system could not be created.

So I wiped the hard drive of my macbook, and bought OS X 10.8. I made the little recovery USB thingy, and tried desperately to get it to install the new system. However, it keeps telling me that OSX could not be installed on your computer because a recovery system can't be created. It asks me to restart over and over again, but so far, no dice. HELLLP!

Same problem here. This is my configuration:
    - SSD drive with 2 partitions: 1 for the OS and the applications and 1 for BootCamp
    - regular HD for data
    - 2nd regular HD for TimeMachine
I've tried almost any solution suggested in different discussions (increasing the partition manually...) except of erasing disk and doing a clean install because I'm afraid of losing data of the Windows partition which is not backed up by TimeMachine. I'm not sure how to copy this partition.
Since this problem has been described for more than 6 months one could think there should be a solution available by Apple ?!?

  • Clean Install: Recovery system can't be created

I have a late 2007 white Macbook.  I installed a 320 GB drive into the optical bay and my O/S drive was a 120 GB OCZ Vertex+
I had previously had a Crucial M4 as the OS drive for months.  I used SuperDuper to clone it to the OCZ about a week ago and had no problems.
The system was running fine until a few days ago when it started acting weird, so I tried to reboot.  I got the blinking folder with a question mark and couldn't do anything else.  I was able to recover some of my data off of the SSD using my brother's MBP and DiskWarrior.  I also created a 4 GB Lion bootable USB.
I erased the SSD using disk utility and then tried to run the installation, but I keep getting "Mac OS X can't be installed on the disk XXXX, because a recovery system can't be created."
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, you cannot see the Recovery HD partition and formatting (erasing) the drive does not remove it. Only partitioning the drive will remove it. The error you are getting is the error produced when there is another partition on the drive that cannot be altered or the drive is not prepped correctly or a Recovery HD partition already exists or there is something corrupted on the drive.
I suggest that you boot from your installer flash drive and use Disk Utility to repartition the SSD:
    Drive Preparation
    1. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button. When prompted click on the option to See Other Disks then select the SSD as the target.

  • How to create Windows 8 installation media from Hidden Recovery partition

My laptop (HP Envy 15- j048tx) came pre-installed with a Windows 8 (OEM) on UEFI GPT partition. Somehow I messed up with the pre-installed Windows 8 and made a clean update to Windows 8.1 (Pro) after enabling Legacy BIOS as the boot method in the CMOS setup. Then i realise that the 8.1(pro) doesn't have Windows product key and hence could not be activated. Before I change the boot method from UEFI to BIOS, trying being cautious, i managed to make a copy of the Recovery partition (22.6 GB) to a USB drive. FYI, While I was still using the pre-installed OEM OS, I also tried to create a recovery DVD (which requires 6 DVD) but I gave it up after burning only the first Disc (Disc-1 of 6.)
Now i'm trying to go back to the default Windows 8 provided by the OEM, as I believe, it has with it a product key embedded somewhere in the BIOS. However, I cannot load the Windows from the copy of the recovery partition I've made earlier. Here's what i've worked around unsuccesfully: Burned an ISO of the Disc-1 (recovery DVD) with 'Image Burn', Edited the ISO file with 'WinISO' and added the entire 22.6 GB file from the recovery partition and then generated a USB Installation drive in GPT partition style with 'Rufus'. I disabled the Legacy BIOS mode, enabled Secured boot and tried to re-install Windows 8 but a message pop-up showing "Selected boot image did not authenticate. Press <enter> to continue."
I've tried to look-up the HP site to see if I can get help or to order HP recovery Disc (reluctantly though), but, guess, the site's support section was probably having some problem!
Inspite of all my failed attempt, i'm still hopeful that something can be done to go back to the original OEM Windows from the back-up copy of the recovery partition I have with me. I shall be very grateful if somebody can help me get this mess sorted, while, keeping the ordering of HP Recovery Disc as a last resort.

It is a terrific place to find answers and tips!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I understand that you copied the recovery partition to a USB drive before you accidentally did a clean install of Windows 8.1 pro  but  you did not have an activation key for that version.
When you copied the recovery partition to the USB drive did you use Windows 8 to format the USB for Windows 8 before you copied the recovery manager.  If not it will not work properly.
If you did format the USB correctly you can try this.
Format the drive creating the necessary partitions first. Now try coping the recovery manager to the one partition . Once you have it copied  then try to access the recovery manager to do a full recovery back to factory.
If this was unsuccessful please contact HP support to obtain a recovery kit.

I need to publish to a local folder on my desk top and I am getting this error message.
can’t create the file “header.jpg.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have suuficient access priveleges.
Please help... I need to copy to a disk... it was working fine until I attached a big project, I tried to delete the project, but still not workng.

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

The first time I attempted to install ML was on a late 2011 MBP.  It ran for three minutes then gave me the error message: Could not install OSX due to an unexpected error.  I was using the original ML install app, not a USB or other drive.
After a couple of restarts wiht the same result I saw a message to the effect that the install was trying to close open apps.  I closed apps  manually a few times to no avail.  I shut down instead of restarting then booted into Safe mode (hold down the shift key when starting) and that did it.  The install went smoothly after that.
I since installed ML in two iMacs using a cloned copy of the install app on a USB drive.  This time I shut down the computers and booted into Safe Mode first and there were no problems.
I don't know if this issue is the one causing you these problems but it is a simple enough solution to try.

  • How to create a USB recovery flash drive using recovery ISO image?

This “HowTo” provides information and instruction how to create a USB recovery media flash drive using the Toshiba recovery ISO image files or Toshiba Recovery discs (DVDs)
To create a USB recovery media flash drive, a USB flash drive with at least 16GB disk space is suggested (depends on the size of the ISO images or recovery discs).
Note: Since 2015 the ISO layout has changed and a different procedure must be processed to create the USB media. The new recovery media type can be identified by the names of the ISO files.
    More info: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD4103KB0000R01.htm

Yes, that article should apply to tablets.
But if your USB recovery drive does not get recognized then it must be corrupted - you should be able to format your disk and perhaps try to see if creating a Recovery device on other devices will make it recognizable on your tablet 2.
