OS Reinstallation on Portege 2000 with non IDE CD-ROM

Hello,
I recently received from my Dad a Portege 2000 (bought in Japan if that makes a difference) on which I am trying to reinstall Win XP from the provided Recovery CDs (there are 3 CDs containing Win XP Pro and Win 2000).
I am trying to do this with a USB FDD and a PCMCIA Sony CRX75A CD-Rom which connects to the computer via a other manufacture PC Card ACR-A01 switchable between 16 bit and CardBus mode).
As I am not very familiar with DOS, CardBus and booting stuff I read quite some topics and found the following application, BootdiskP2000.EXE which contains drivers for PCMCIA and USB Toshiba CD-ROM. So I ran it and when choosing external PCMCIA CD Drive from the menu, I got the following:
PC Card driver for external ATAPI-IDE Drives Rev:2203
Found PCCARD: IO DATA CBIDE2 V4.1
ERROR: There is no PCCARD in socket A and B!
PCCARD not initialized!!
So, I looked on the web for DOS Drivers for my ACR-A01 and found DUAOTA16.SYS and DUOATACD.SYS. I then modified my CONFIG.SYS (again maybe not correctly as I am not at ease with that) by adding a menuitem, and further on:
[SONY]
DEVICE=A:\DUOATA16.SYS
DEVICE=A:\DUOATACD.SYS /D:TOSCD001
When running it, I get the followings:
DuoATA16 CS Client Driver Version 1.01
Copyright....
CBIDE2: Not found CardServices.
Driver is not installed.
DuoATACD CD-ROM Driver Version 1.06
Copyright....
IDECD: Not Configuration CBIDE2 Card.
CD-ROM driver is not installed.
If have a look on the HISTORY.TXT file from the boot disk, at the end it is written: "If you use it with other CD-Roms, you have to modify/exchange normaly the CD-Rom driver (e.g. Toscdrom.sys-file!) and the driver, over which you get access to the PCMCIA Card (Fcatapi.sys and FCPoint.exe)." but I have no idea with what I'd have to replace it.
Last point, my BIOS settings on page 2 are: Device Config.=All Devices which allows me to set PC CARD Controller Mode=CardBus/16-Bit, and by the way the onther manufacture CD-ROM used to work fine with the Portege but with a Win XP driver.
Anyone has an idea of what is going on here, because I'm kind of lost. Thanx a lot!!!
P.S I also tried to boot via PXE-LAN from a PC running Win Server 2003 but that doesn't work either, but I'll start a new topic for that.

And why you don´t try maybe a USB-DVD-ROM? A USB will be recognized for sure. I installed on my Portege R200 a XP Pro with a USB-DVD-ROM.

• Setup windows XP on a Portege 2000, with no external drives

I recently became i happy owner of a Portege 2000 which was given to me for free(?!) from a family member that doesn't use it anymore.
When i first held it i felt impressed! Its so light and so beautiful.
It came with Windows 2000, which crashed after a while (just one day). So i decided to install windows Xp on it. But the portege has no external media drives that can be accessed through the bios, as i have come to conclude after reading several threads on this forum. After windows 2000 crashed i suspected that the hard drive may have some issues, but i decided that before i purchase i new 1.8" (very expensive) drive, i would try to install a fresh copy of windows XP os. So i bought a 1.8" to IDE hard drive adapter to plug it on my desktop. This thing works just fine as i can see the drive and also copy files on it.
But the problem for me is how can i install XP on the drive and then plug it back on the portege and make it work.
I tried installing windows through the desktop PC, and then after removing all the drivers from the device manager console, i re-install it on the portege. All i get is a grey bar that fills up on a black screen and then nothing.....
I tried to boot it in safe mode but after it loads some files it just gets stuck. I though that maybe if i did the installation on a different desktop there would be no problem, so i installed XP on all the desktops availiable to me (core 2 duo, Opteron, and athlon XP -socket A) with the exact same results.
Is there a way to make the toshiba 1.8" drive bootable through the desktop PC and also include windows XP installation files on the same drive?
What i mean is if its possible to emulate a floppy and access command prompt, while having windows XP on the same hard drive??
If not do you have any suggestions about this issue? Any idea will be very welcome as i have been trying to find a way for about a month now...
I read somewhere in this forum that you can install XP via lan, but i really don't know how to do that.
P.S. Would it be possible for anyone to find a windows xp installation for portege 2000 as a ghost image that i can load in the drive through the desktop???
Thank you in advance & please help me....

So tonight was the big night for me, it was time to find out if i could put kjo's info in practice....
Plugged the 1.8" toshiba drive in the desktop, format to fat32, set primary and active partition and then do the booting part.
So i set of to create a MS-dos boot floppy, only to find out to that (long time no-use) floppy drive was as good as dead...
I tried to do the exact same process through a usb stick but no luck there either. And then it struck me! Mark the file extraction box, unmark the writing on floppy box on the wbootess.exe window and there it is! It worked like a charm!! The drive was bootable on my Portege right away no floppy, no usb stick needed. It just booted!
So i unplugged the drive once more, copied the i386 folder on the drive and ina few secs i was in windows blue screen mode!!...
kjo i am really thankful to you for taking the time and explaining this routine, that program is very useful (wbootess.exe), as you can make almost anything bootable!!
I am very pleased with the little toshiba actually functioning after all this time i could only look at it!

• OS reinstallation on Portege 2000 via PXE-LAN

Hello again,
So, as said before I am trying to reinstall Win XP from the provided Recovery CDs.
In fact, I have 4 CDs: One that contains only Windows 2000 Pro and 3 CDs containing Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro. Of course, the 4 CDs were delivered with the computer.
I tried via FDD and CD-ROM which didn't work (see preceding topic), but I also tried via PXE-LAN.
So I installed a 3 month evaluation version of Windows Server 2003 on my desktop and ran the RIS (Remote Installation Service).
1- It accepted the Windows 2000 Pro CD as a Windows Installation CD, but when launching the Portege 2000, after a few step, when it looks for the computer configuration, I get an error message that the driver for the LAN Card is missing and that it cannot proceed any further.
2- When I run the RIS with the CD 1 of 3, it doesn't even recognise it as a Windows Installation CD!!
So I managed to install a Win XP Family Edition which I normally run on my desktop, but I don't have any driver installed (WIFI, Infrared, SoundCard, etc...) but also I have only 1 licence for the Family Edition.
Has anyone an idea on how to proceed with this method (I mean with the 3 CDs)??
Thanx a lot.

Hello Josey
As far as I know recovery images on recovery CDs for Portege notebook without ODD contains drivers for PCMCIA or PC-card used on Toshiba external ODDs. Because of that when you connect original Toshiba external ODD the delivered recovery media will be bootable and you can install OS anytime you want.
ODDs are not so cheap but if you like your notebook you should invest your money und buy original and compatible ODD. Other way you can contact service partner (if ASP is not too far from you) and ask them if they can install OS for you. They have those ODD in service. I am pretty sure they will do this for you. Pay them the coffee and problem is solved.
When OS is preinstalled install all stuff you need and configure the notebook how you want to have it. After doing this try to obtain applications to create your own image like Norton ghost. Install it and create own ghost image on second partition. On this way you will be able to install self created ghost image any time you want and also without external ODD. This image you can also save on external HDD and use anytime if something goes wrong. I do this for years.
It is very practical when the OS is infected by virus or when some tool does not work anymore. In just 20 min you can have all settings as before.
Sorry for long posting and good luck!

• Portege 2000,can't install windows,ide errors

Any help much appreciated.....
previous owner wiped the 20gb hard disk. Have the Toshiba pcmcia drive. Flashed latest bios. It will boot from xp or 2000 cd no problem,however both OSs stop at the start with bsod (2000 gives inacessible_boot device).
Tried with ME but the cdrom driver isnt the right one(doesnt load the cdrom drive). In a situation like this I normally remove the drive and install(with hdd adaptor) in a pc to format and copy the OS files then replace the drive and run setup from the hdd but this has a 1.8" drive and I have no adaptor.
HELP!!!
Mick

Hi Tyson,
Sorry but I am a little confused about your explanation. If I understand you right, you bought used Protg 200 with external Toshiba CD-ROM device (PCMCIA) and you try to reinstall it?
Do I understand you correctly?
As far as I know in original Toshiba Recovery CD there is driver for external "TOSHIBA CD-ROM" (PCMCIA/CARDBUS) and it will be loaded at begin of recovery procedure. If it works with non Toshiba devices it is unknown to me. If you want to reinstall OS without original Toshiba CD you must start the notebook using start disc with right driver for external device.
Like you said the best solution is to start setup from HDD. You must a Google a little bit around and I am sure that you can find one for you. Please check this site
http://www.addonics.com/products/Saturn/aesed.asp . There is described that the optional 2.5" converter kit can be used for 2.5" or 1.8" IDE hard drive.

• Question about Portege 2000 boot with Linux

Hi everyone,
My Portege 2000 PIII 750MHz, 512 RAM, 20GB is simply driving me mad. I would like to try to install Linux, and have downloaded some distros to try it. The point is I am using an external CD/DVD reader, with a 16 bit pc card connector cable. Booting starts until the BIOS is involved, but when it gets to OS drivers being involved, booting hangs up, with every distro, except of course win XP, with which it installs perfectly fine.
Anybody got any suggestions on how to proceed? I really would like something lighter than WXP on my machine. Thx!

Hi
I do not have this Portege but I know that Toshiba recovery image (WXP) contains driver for external ODD and the installation can be done without any problem.
Maybe you can find some useful tips under http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/index.html

• Portege 2000 - Information needed

Hi there!
I need some special Information about the Toshiba Portege 2000, I hope anybody could help me.
1. Which CPU can I build in? At the moment there is a Pentium 3 Mobile 750 MHz...Dos the Portege 2000 supports higher CPUs like 1 GHz or 1,13 GHz? Which socket has the P2000?
2. How many RAM is supported?
3. HDD-Support. At the moment Ive got a 30 GB. Support for more? Maybe 40 GB, or even 60 GB?
Thanks so far! :)

Why you dont install and use hardware diagnostic software like Everest home edition for example.
Such software provides all infos and details.
> Dos the Portege 2000 supports higher CPUs like 1 GHz or 1,13 GHz?
This depends on the Chipset. Check the chipset and the specifications. The chipset details can be found on the Intel page. There you should find the info about the CPU compatibility.
>2. How many RAM is supported?
Only one slot is available and can be upgraded. You can upgrade the RAM max to 512MB
>3. HDD-Support. At the moment Ive got a 30 GB. Support for more? Maybe 40GB or even 60GB?
I think it should be possible to use the 40GB or 60GB.
The difference between the 30GB and 60GB is not so huge.
But you should firstly try with a 40GB enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface.
bye

Thanks,

Add "Targets" attribute to the connection pool. You may
get an idea how it looks like by searching config.xml
for "targets". If target servers are not set, the pool won't be
deployed and can not be used to a create datasource.

The XP install disk boots fine but after Setup has copied files it blue screens (BSOD). I am not very tech savvy but I think this means that the BIOS can "see" the PCMCIA CD-ROM but that the actual XP image loaded by the Setup cannot, probably due to missing drivers for the PCMCIA CD-ROM?
I then thought that perhaps I could use F6 to load extra drivers during the initial setup, but it is beyond me to create the right set of files required. I know you can download Freecom drivers but I don't know which of the CD driver files to use and how to author from scratch the right txtsetup.oem file.
Does anyone know how to successfully use F6 and load drivers for this?
I have found lots of posts suggesting I copy the setup to the HDD and run the setup from there. My problem is that the XP install is an Upgrade CD, so I will be asked at some point to insert a previous Windows CD and if at that point I do not have a working CD-ROM drive...
First post in this forum so be gentle -- I have done a search but not found a thread with an actual solution, but obviously if I have missed one please point it out!

Toshiba is not interested in providing recovery disks for such an old, out-of-warranty and discontinued model.
I ended up doing the following:
1. On another computer, download XP SP3 iso image from Microsoft.
2. Extract the files and run nLite to integrate latest hotixes (package from RyanVM.net).
3. Modify the resulting set of XP installation files to make it an OEM SLP package that will automatically activate upon install (Google OEMBIOS).
4. Take the hard drive out of the P2000, attach it via a USB caddy to the other computer, format the drive with two partitions of which the first one _not_ mapped to a drive letter, use "winnt32 /syspart:<drive> /tempfiles:<drive> /makelocalsource /noreboot" to copy across all the XP installation files created in steps 1-3 to the second partition and make that partition bootable. Use the product key officially provided by Microsoft for SLP installations when asked.
5. Put hard drive back into P2000 and boot. Setup will start from the second partition and you will be offered to install XP to the first.
6. You've got an activated XP installation!
You'll need to do a bit of Googling to figure out the exact steps but the steps above should help you find what you need. Since the machine came with XP originally and has a COA sticker underneath, I believe this method results in a legitimate XP install nut don't take my word for it...

• [SOLVED!] On USB drives, problems with non-English chars and HAL

Hello,
I am having a problem with non-English caracters (áãàçéẽê...) on files stored on my USB drive.
On Windows they're created with the correct name. But on Linux the files have the non-English characteres replaced by '?' and are not accessible.
If I manuallly mount the drives using 'mount -o iocharset=utf8 /dev/sdb1 /media/usbdisk' the characters are OK, so I think I just need to get HAL to pass the correct parameters to mount. However I don't know how to do that, and haven't found any good solution.
I tried to build a custom kernel setting the default charset as UTF-8 and it didn't work.
Any ideas? I'm using x86-64, HAL 0.5.13-3 and my locale is pt-BR.UTF-8.
Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, this is not a HAL problem, but a problem with 'exo'. For the solution, I edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/mount.rc and added iocharset=utf8 to the [vfat] category.

I don't use Thunar presently, but I looked in the Thunar Volume Manager doc and I didn't find anything to change the mount options of removable drives. I am not quite sure if it's possible or not. Maybe someone using it can tell for sure.
But if it is not possible to change the mount options, a possible solution is to disable the Thunar Volume Manager plugin and to use something else more configurable to manage the automount function.
Personally I use the halevt package from AUR which uses configuration files in the xml format.
It's not so easy to use but is highly configurable.
But there exists other tools also.
I can help you with halevt if you choose that way...

• Not all chinese characters display correctly with non-embedded text

Hi all,
I've updated to the last beta 2 of Flash Player 10.1 (10,1,51,66) and compiled this simple Flex application to illustrate the fact that not all chinese characters can be displayed correctly with non-embedded text (device font).

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo"
minWidth="1024" minHeight="768"
creationComplete="resourceManager.localeChain = ['zh_CN'];"
layout="{new VerticalLayout()}">
<fx:Script>

import spark.layouts.VerticalLayout;

</fx:Script>
<s:Label text="伜-伞伟传伡伢伣伤伥伦伧伨伩伪伫伬伭-伝">
</s:Label>
<mx:Label text="伜-伞伟传伡伢伣伤伥伦伧伨伩伪伫伬伭-伝"/>
</s:Application>
Notice that characters from the Unicode range 0x4F1E .. 0x4А2D are not displayed within <s:Label> component that uses Flash Text Engine (FTE) by default to display the text, but at the same time those characters display just fine within older <mx:Label> component that relies on flash.text.TextField instance to render the text.

OK, did not know that "Arial Unicode MS" font is only distributed with Microsoft Office, was looking into relying on this font in case if "simsun.ttc" font is not available at the user's system, by using the following:

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
minWidth="1024" minHeight="768"
creationComplete="resourceManager.localeChain = ['zh_CN']"
layout="{new VerticalLayout()}">
<fx:Style>
@namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
@namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
s|Label {
fontFamily: "Arial Unicode MS, SimSun, Arial";
</fx:Style>
<fx:Script>

import spark.layouts.VerticalLayout;

</fx:Script>
<s:Label id="sparkLabel" text="伜-伞伟传伡伢伣伤伥伦伧伨伩伪伫伬伭-伝"/>
</s:Application>
Tough decision ahead, but accordingly to the survey at codestyle.org (2000 participants from 2007 year and onwards), Arial Unicode MS is present at 62.53%% system surveyed.
ps
My current install of Windows XP already includes the install of Microsoft Office 2007 and I've also enabled/disabled the support of East Asian languages, thus the content of my "fonts" folder differs now significantly from "clean" Windows XP install version.
Nevertheless I found the page with comprehensive lists of standard fonts installed with different releases of Windows that looks viable here: http://www.kayskreations.net/fonts/fonttb.html

• Error when import file with non-english character

Hi,

I have images file with non-english character (unicode), for example ABC<X>.png where <X> is non-english character such as japanese, chinese, etc.

Whenever I want to import the file to After Effects (right click -> import -> file), I always encounter error:

Finding file/dir info for the file "C:\...\ABC?.png" -- file not found (-43) (3::30)
Can't import file "ABC?.png": unsupported filetype or extension. (0::1)

My PC is Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2 English.

How to solve this problem?

Thanks

Adjust your system language settings. Proper file name conventions require a consistent Unicode environment, so install the respective foreign language support files or switch the language system-wide. Mixing different zones/ code ranges is always a bad idea. If your system is not in Japanese, AE will always misinterpret the characters and refuse to import. If that's not feasible, simply rename the files.

• Problem switching from a non Idea Exchange board to an Idea Exchange board when typing a new post

Tested on Chrome/XP and IE8/XP
when I start a post in a non Idea Exchange forum and later on want to convert it into an Idea Exchange one, I can switch to the correct forum using the "Select Board" pull-down list. However, when posting, my post is refused because I haven't chosen a "Label". Well, that's because I can't!
In other words, switching to an Idea Exchange board does not add the "Label" options on the composition webpage, hence it is impossible to post that idea unless you copy it (or rely on the autosave function), start a new post directly into a Idea Exchange forum and paste your old post in it (or alternatively, load the saved draft once you have created the new post).
Disclaimer: this may have already reported, but as I said elsewhere, the Search function doesn't work either...

This is my first post so be gentle with me. I have a Pixi Plus running os 1.4.5. Last week we upgraded to exchange 2010 (or 14 as I've heard it called). I lost the connection on my phone. I tried changing the inheritable permisions above and it has not solved it. I'm pretty sure all the log in info I'm using is correct. It acts like it's communicating with the server because it says
Unable to sign in
Could not sign into account
THe mail server responded: bad login/password
I've changed several things and when I change certain things it says it cannot validate incoming mail server so I feel like I'm close but can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

• Non cumulative with non-cumulative change

Hi Experts,
I have a Question !, As i know that i can create Non-Cumulative Figure By Means Of two ways:-
1. Non cumulative with non-cumulative change and
2. Non Cumulative with Inflow and Outflow.
the second one is very clear but i am not very clear about 1st option i.e What Non-Cumulative Value changes is? and how it calculates the non-cumulative Value.
If u have an Idea please share your knowledge...
Ragards
Prakash

The 1st option is for key figures like headcount or similar, which you would like to store as a total figure in a cube instead of a DSO in a scenario where you are using a multiprovider on this together with other non-cumulative cubes.
The SAP help below explains this quite well

• Need information about Portege 2000

Hi
I have portege 2000 it's nice and pretty notebook
I have a problem: I need serial number or parts number of hard drive caddy and hdd adaptor
anybody can help me?

Hey buddy,
unfortunately I have no partnumbers for you, but I think it would be the easiest way for you to contact a local authorized service center and ask them. They can give you all information you need and they can also sell you the parts you need to work with your portege.
Heres a link to find the nearest ASP in your country:

• Use BIBeans with non-Oracle development / appserver products?

Hi,
Is it possible to BIBeans with non-Oracle development tools (netbeans/forte etc.) and appserver products?
Where can I find more info?
TIA..

Hi Nilesh,
Yes it is definitely possible to use other IDEs for BIBeans development but use of JDeveloper makes it really easy as it has got lot of BI Beans wizards. In other IDEs though it is possible, it will be very tedious to create reports and graphs etc and do over all development.
As far as deployment on other appserver goes, I have deployed BIBeans applications (Servlet) on atleast 3 containers (Tomcat, OC4J and weblogic). Since BIBeans builds a standard java servlet application, it should be possible to deploy on any servlet container.
Hope it helps.
