OS will not restore to my new hard disk...

I have just bought a 'used' iBook G4 which was said to have had a faulty HDD. I took-out the old 40GB, replaced it with a standard ATA 80GB and tried to re-install the OS (10.3) from the original installation discs, holding down c when starting-up. I have tried dozens of times and it usually give me the grey Apple screen with timer, the DVD drive then makes a lot of whirring noises then I just get a dead blue screen (crash?). Occasionally, however, it has let me start the installation but, each time, it just gets as far as the destination disk screen only to show me a red exclamation sign over the disk icon with a notice saying that the OS cannot be installed onto this disk (no explanation why!). I have tried erasing and repairing the new disc, but it makes no difference.
I've lost hours on this (the new disk took forever to install!) and I am losing the willpower and patience to face disassembling the whole machine again...
I need help please!!! (otherwise the iBook goes through the window and I replace it with an IBM! (yes, it really is that desperate!).
Thank you!

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
OS (10.3) from the original installation discs,
We will assume, for now, that your install disks are, indeed, the original disks, try this:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive and Installing OS X
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install BSD Subsystems.
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Computer will restart after update.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please post back with an update on your progress or with further questions/comments.
Good luck.

  • Touchsceen will not work after installing new hard drive

    Hello,
My HP TouchSmart 520 - 1047 c PC's hard drive crashed this week.  I went out and purchased a new one, installed it, loaded my Windows 8 Pro disc in, and got it back working.  The only issue so far is that my touchscreen will not work.  HP support says it's a hardware issue and was no help.
    Please help.
    Thanks,

  • Newly installed OS X will not start up on new hard drive

    Hello helpers,
I have many problems with my Power book g4 titanium. Most critical: I have just replaced my Hard drive with a new 120 gb. I also, purchased a new dvd OS X 10.4 full retail version. I installed it onto the new hard drive. It loaded properly and said to restart. Well thats it. It will not restart. It acts like it is going to restart. But, all I get is the apple with a little wheel timer thing. I waited for several hours and that is all it does. Please help.
    Many grateful thanks,
    Rembrandt0328

I suggest you re-prep your new drive then reinstall OS X.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button and select the Apple Partition Map scheme, then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed and the new volume has re-mounted on the Desktop quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed to install OS X.

  • Mavericks will not install on brand new Hard Drive

Trying to install Mavericks to a brand new internal 2TB Samsung SATA 3.0 HD on a 3-yr old 12 Core Mac Pro system that was running Mnt Lion just fine. After multiple failures upgrading the Mnt Lion disk to Mavericks. Decided to just use a brand spankin' new hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks. Now during the install to the NEW DRIVE, getting error message "Mavericks cannot be installed." Then I reboot and try to force the continuation of the install, doing this repeatedly, and I sometimes get a error log instead of a just an error message. Error log says: Thread 34 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.high-priority.  Then the 1st line listed under that is: 0 libsystem_platform.dylib  0x000000010fa5a06a _platform_memmove$VARIANT$Nehalem + 138. If anybody knows what any of that means?
    Thanks.

Without the full listing of the trace I can't be sure, however it would look more like a bonafide logic board or memory error rather than the HD that's causing  the problem. The low level drivers on Mavericks have obviously changed (otherwise it wouldn't be a different OS version) and possibly they're exposing a lack of performance in your memory. The actual Mavericks install may not be the problem, but rather being corrupted during installation. In the line you quoted, Nehalem is the Intel name for your CPU, the memmove operation failed (move blocks of memory contents from point A to point B) and they shared library containing this was in the system library....sort of critical stuff.
    You could try the following:
Re-seat the RAM and try again.
Try an old OS installation and see if it succeeds (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, etc)
Try an install to an external enclosure
If re-seating the RAM does the trick, then you're set.
If it doesn't, then install an older OS to see if they work OK. If older OSes work OK using the internal drive and you have after market memory in the system, it would imply to me that the memory probably isn't quite up to snuff and Mavericks is exposing it. If it's original memory then it should be OK.
If the older OSes now don't install correctly and it's giving similar problems try doing the install in an external enclosure. The point here being to try to move your data path off the internal SATA cable. If these install OK, try it with Mavericks. If any of these work it could be the SATA cable or I/O controllers on the logic board (SATA cable most likely).  A good reference for these sorts of problems is:
Bad Hard Drive Signs and Symptoms
Possibly a last option, which I would think (or hope) would be rare, would be that the binary for Mavericks install got corrupt during download. You could also try some of the resets they have in the linked document above. They might work and it doesn't take any effort.
    Good Luck

  • Windows XP (sp2) will not update after replacing the hard disk of my Presario V4435NR with a new one

    Hi,
I had to replace my Presario V4435NR hard disk (80 GB) with a new 160 GB hard disk from Samsung. The original hard disk did not crash but was churning all the time and did not have enough space for all I wanted to put on it. I installed the new 160 GB hard disk (which of course did not have the recovery partition that my old one had on it) and ran recovery from the recovery DVD I made when I first bought the laptop. Everything worked fine until I tried to update my xp through windows update website. This is the error # I get from windows updates (0x80072EE2).
How can I get my xp to run updates sealessly as it used to before?
    THank you
    Abdul

I installed it already and things were fine (updates installed with no problems) for a while but the same problem resurfaced after I installed MS Office. Xp gave me the same error code when I tried to update. Woke up in the morning and tried windows update again and windows found lots of updates and installed them smoothly.
    What is causing this inconsistency?
    * Now, I'm unable to get any updates (windows updates website gives me the same error code)

  • MS office word (2011) will not save files on the hard disk. It will save on USB drives.  Help!

I have installed MS Office 2011 on our iMac and Macbook Air.  The program works as expected on the Macbook Air.  However, on the iMac, neither Word nor Excel will save files to the internal hard drive.  Both save files to a USB memory stick.  The error message I receive is:
This is not a valid file name.
Try one or more of the following:
    * Chech the path to make sure it was typed correctly.
    * Select a file from the list of files or folders.
I expect it is something with the file saving options, but haven't been able to sort it out.
    Help please.

Found the answer with the help of Microsoft Office for Mac telephone support.....
The name of the Mac Hard drive started with "\"
Microsoft office can't cope with that.
Renamed the hard drive without the back-slash and it works fine.

  • HELP! my ipod will NOT restore and is stuck in disk mode....

    ipod nano (2nd)

In some cases, the iPod might get into a state in which the battery needs to be drained before it can be reset so try these steps.
    1. Disconnect iPod from all power sources and leave it disconnected for about 24 hours.
    2. Reconnect iPod to the Apple iPod Power Adapter or the computer and reset it.

  • 3rd gen iPod will not complete the RESTORE process with new Hard Drive

I have an 3rd gen iPod and I have replaced the hard drive with a newer MK2006GAL. The drive formats fine with a USB cable, formating Mac OS Extended Journaled. It will not complete a "restore" when connected via FireWire in iTunes or with any ipod updater utility. this happens on any mac (we have several). It will not even see the iPod updater when connected via USB and it says MUST CONNECT WITH A FIREWIRE CABLE. It will not format with Disk Utility when connected with the Apple FireWire cable only USB. This is the second new hard drive I have tried. I thought the first "replacement drive" was bad. Turns out it must be something else. Does this sound like a bad battery or motherboard or bad FireWire cable to you? The connectors look fine (under magnification). other problems, while this iPod will not Restore properly, it also will not turn off.
Would like to know if anyone else has seen this trouble.
    thanks.

  • I updated my phone but it will not restore so I have a bunch of apps that wont open and all my music and videos are gone.

I updated my 3GS and it will not restore. All of my apps are ther but will not open and all of my music is gone. Everything is on my itunes but it will not let me sync. It just says to retore from backup or start as new iphone.

Depending on what iPhone you have when you get to the connect to wifi you should be able to activate your device over cellular data. Try doing a hard reset by holding the home circle button an power button until an apple pops up and the  go through the setup again and when you get to the wifi part a option should be setup with cellular data iPhone 4 and above should give this option sometimes doesn't like showing up that's why u have to do a hard reset first

  • IPod is corrupt: will not restore, constantly resets itself

I have had my iPod 60GB for 2 years now and it just started going crazy recently. First it started skipping songs (not playing them) then when I connected it to my computer it said my iPod was corrupt and needed restored. So I clicked on restore and it keeps giving me an error message (1429) and says it cannot restore the iPod because it is corrupt. I've tried everything on the error message help page and nothing works. I tried changing the USB it was plugged into, and that didn't work. It says Windows couldn't install the software for my new drive. Now my iPod is setting here constantly restarting itself, over and over and over the Apple logo screen is coming on for a few seconds, then shutting off and back on and so on.
One of my friends said he had one that did the same and he had to send it in and get a new one- I certainly hope I will NOT have to purchase another one, because I certainly feel that for $280 you should get something that should work or can be easily fixed. If this is the case, and I don't get a new one, I will certainly NEVER purchase an Apple product again for sure.
I really like my iPod so I hope there's a way to fix it. I cannot get it to shut off now though! It keeps turning itself on and off. I am using a PC with Windows XP Serv. Pack 3 if that helps.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Virtually same problem. ipod shows playing a song, but I can hear the hard drive clicking. I tried to restore, but says ipod is corrupt. This is unreal as it is not long out of warranty and i paid way too much for this to happen. I have only used it about three months off anf on since I purchased it. It is stuck and will not shut off just the hard drive is turning. I placed it on a magnet in my car, and was wondering if that caused the problem.
Any help would be great as mor than one individual has this same issue.

  • Iphone *4S* in recovery loop able to toggle dfu but WILL NOT restore....

I APPOLOGIZE THAT THIS POSTED QUESTION OF MINE IS SO LONG. HOWEVER, IT IS A NEED TO KNOW BASIS FOR YOU ALL IN ORDER TO ASSIST/HELP ME WITH THIS MATTER THANK YOU FOR READING.... First of all i highly appreciate all of you taking time to read this question as well as all of your efforts to assist me in this matter thank you.... Here is the issue.... My 15 year old brother purchased an iphone 4s from ebay at $75.00. The description and status of this iphone 4s stated that it is "STUCK IN DFU MODE" we knew nothing about the dfu situation. (or how highly difficult it would later be) So he asks me if he should buy it, well i said yes thinking that this problem sounded legitament as well as easy/simple to bypass and or repair. Therefore he purchased it thinking we could bypass this dfu problem, and he would finally have a fully functional iphone 4s as he has been anticipating to own one. As He knows more about idevices than i do and owns alot of them from ipod touch all the way up to this stubborn iphone 4s. He began to work on this iphone 4s project trying to get it to boot up and work correctly for a couple of days, and hours at a time, it wouldnt no matter what. I then took over the project, and i have to say, this particular iphone 4s, is very corrupted/damaged as far as something software/firmware related within this iphone 4s. So for several hours at a time for almost 3 or 4 months into this grueling project this morning included i have been putting all of my effort into fxing this iphone 4s. I couldnt/cannot get it to restore on itunes (of which we both have the most recent update of itunes) in recovery mode and in dfu mode. I toggled our firewalls to allow the itunes update server. I as well as i toggled our anti-virus programs into disabled mode for the times of which we have been trying to restore and update this iphone. It did update, however, as usual it will not restore with itunes it *ALWAYS* responds back to us with itunes the cannot restore this iphone, the following unknown error has occurred, error (9). I then proceeded to searching online for a solution to the problem(s). As well as this error code (9) itunes continuosly states, After it shows a loading bar under the white apple logo/boot screen on the iphone 4s. It soon there after tries to restore it then responds back with the afformentioned error code (9). The thing is that ive researched, researched, and researched on youtube, bing, and other forums. As i did not know about this apple support community until this morning. Ive spent about 2 and a half hours searching the community here. So yes, i have searched the support community thoroughly. However i have yet to find the solution to the iphone 4s errors we are facing with this potentially irreparable iphone 4s. I am in great hopes that it cant be completely useless, static shocked, or "bricked" because it turns on and registers on itunes etc. Ive went so far as opening the iphone 4s as well so as to see if it would happen to be a hardware issue. Yet everything on the inside of this iphone 4s, is in perfect order as well as new just as the outer casing and the screen. he ordered this iphone 4s from some seller profile of which was a cell phone store/seller (or so it said) on ebay. So my thoughts on it now are if they couldnt get this iphone 4s to boot up and fully function. Then im not sure if i can either, as i know nothing about idevices period. However i have learned a whole lot about them now. in conclusion all i can say about this entire situation with my brothers iphone 4s is that, i hope that i can get it repaired  by myself with the proper assistance through the community from you all... But right now i feel sad for my younger brother because i cant seem to get his iphone up and running of which he is excited to have working and he is relying on me to get it fixed....
P.S.-  I think that this iphone 4s has probably been dropped and something inside is loose causing it to have all of the issues it is having im not to sure though.... its just a thought i had about this iphone, also maybe it got too hot and it is therefore malfunctioning? and if that is the case then theres got to be some way  to fix the hardware inside of this iphone by soldering or just simply unplugging something and then plugging it back in? again these are just some thoughts ive had about this whole situation. I mainly think, that this iphone 4s somewhere along the lines, was corrupted/damaged by the person(s) who has had it/owned it in the past. They had to of tampered with the iphone 4s by jailbreaking it or attempting to do so. Or they may have damaged it by improperly updating the ios, improperly attempting to restore it, or downgrade it, etc. And  the only "SOLUTIONS" i found online, were various programs to fix all of the problems/problemthis iphone is having trouble with. NOTE: these programs i knew absolutely nothing about or how to use them. Only by following youtube tutorials etc. i eventually learned my way around them. Anyway EVERY LAST ONE OF THESE PROGRAMS FAILED VERY MISERABLY in repairing this iphone 4s. I found all of the following programs and attempted to use all of them with my brothers iphone 4s they are all up to date and are as follows: redsn0w, ifaith, tinyumbrella, ireb r7, sn0wbreeze, bluefreeze and recboot. these were all reffered to me by youtube and other forums to "help" with an iphone 4s. i do not know anything about these programs as far as if i should have used them. However, like i said they were on youtube and such so i got them in a desperate attempt to fix my brothers iphone 4s and again i appologize this posted question of mine was very long however majority of this information is a need to know basis in order to help/ assist me in this matter THANK YOU ALL....

If you have the latest version of iTunes you should not have to download the ipsw file separately as jalp suggests. iTunes will download it automatically.
This error (9) most often means that your antivirus or firewall (or router) is blocking access to Apple's servers. In rare instances it can also mean that the phone was hacked (or "jailbroken") to unlock it. If this is the case you must do a DFU restore, not Recovery Mode, as follows:
    Reboot your computer
Disable your antivirus and firewall. If you has Kaspersky you may actually have to uninstall it, as it can never be turned completely off.
Connect the USB cable to a USB port directly on your computer, not to a hub. DO NOT connect the other end to the phone
Disconnect all USB devices except for mouse, keyboard and iPhone cable.
    Launch iTunes
On the phone hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time for EXACTLY 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP button but continue holding the HOME button. The screen should be black. If it has an Apple logo this means you held both buttons too long. Release the HOME button and do it again.
While holding the HOME button connect the free end of the cable to the phone.
After a short while iTunes should recognize a phone in "recovery mode" (iTunes doesn't know the difference between DFU and Recovery modes, but the phone does)
Release the HOME button and don't touch the phone or the computer until the process completes or you get an error message. Ignore any displays on the phone.
If the error recurs the phone was probably messed up when it was hacked. This is not a hardware problem, or if it is, it isn't one you can fix.
You can try repeating these steps with a different computer and a different cable. If that fails also the phone is probably not repairable.

  • My wives phone will not restore. we have had an apple tech and a verizon tech on this issue. we are trying to restore from a previous backup from iCloud. it is large. but a month now?! Help!

We restored her new iphone 5s from a backup on icloud from her previous iphone 5. it was restoring for two weeks! we called apple and eventually reset and started over. verizon had us do this again a week and a half later. still, now, its been over two and a half weeks and the phone will not restore from her icloud backup. she has alot of our pictures from the recent past holidays and pictures in icloud that we dont want to loose. along with all her itunes purchases.she is starting to get really upset. i know her backup was a fairly big one but if icloud sold her the storage to do the backup. why cant we get her phone to restore from this icloud backup? Is it the device? is that covered under our apple care? or under our phone warranty? Is it the size of the backup? im so lost and want to help her. I, writing this on the support community to see if you guys can help us. i really dont wat to spend another grand on a phone. thank you for your time. thanks for reading. happy holidays to you all..

Essentially it would mean another Internet connection yes, however it's your local network that I am wondering about and whether it could be the problem.

  • HT201406 My iPod touch is locked up. It will not restore from update mode. After holding the on/off button down the slide to powerer off does not appear.

My iPod is loched up. I downloaded a new update and now it will not restore.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My Iphone Will Not Restore, Please Help.

    Hello,
I fell asleep while facetiming, I woke up and found that my iphone will not turn on, which is odd, since I was charging it. I then took it off my charger and then put it back on. The Iphone 4 then showed the Apple Insignia for about 10 seconds, then became a dark screen, then back to the insignia. It did this repeated flashing for a good ten minutes. I then took it off the charger and the phone stopped flashing and it became totally dead. I tried pressing the home button, and the top button, but there was no effect. I then plugged in my Iphone to the computer and put it into recovery mode. I tried to restore it, but it continually keeps getting an error (21). I tried it on a different computer, will not restore, but got a different error (I believe it was the error (1604)). I tried restoring it multiple times, I updated my Itunes to the latest version, I made sure my connection was well. I tried taking my Iphone off of recovery mode, but it did not work.
I suspect that my problems are due to the fact that my Iphone will not stay on without being connected to a power source, and that is the reason for all the errors. I tried it on different USB ports and different computers. Please correct me if I am wrong, and please help me figure out what I should do next. I do not mind losing all my contacts, but I do mind if I have to spend money on a new phone, afterall, I barely even had this phone for a year.
So Please, I am begging. Please help me and tell me why doesn't my phone stay on without being connected? Is it because I fell asleep while facetiming and because neither of us hung up it over-heated and killed the battery? Is there an easy way to fix this since I am technologically-impaired? Is there any hope for me and my Iphone's future?
Any answer will be very much appreciated.
    Thank You.

It sounds to me like you either got defective parts or otherwise did not make the repair correctly. We cannot help  with self-repairs here, the iPhone officially not user servicable, but you can ask for advice in the forums on ifixit.com, a site which is dedicated to those attempting their own repairs.

My ipod shuffle (1st generation) will not restore. It says it is corrupted(error 1442) Is it possible to correct this problem, or is it beyond repair. It worked last  time I used it on my laptop with Windows Vista. Any help would be much appreciated.

Im actually tilting it up where it cinnects to my iPod, not where it connects to my computer, and i have tried three(yes, 3) different cables, one of which i bought brand new. still nothing, and i've also tried different USB ports on my computer,....nothing. Could this simply be a hardware failure of somekind? maybe a physical problem...i mean, why would i have to tilt the cable in order for my computer to actually read my iPod? im looking at the USB connector on my iPod (maybe it's my imagination, not sure) it possible might be bent, the little metal part in the port.
