OS 10.5.8 end of day Software Update for iTunes. This morning system will not boot
- start up tone; Apple Logo & spinner, 1-2 minutes Apple logo changes to no entry symbol.
Tried to start with Shift key down, NG
Tried to start with PRAM keys, NG
Tried to start from system disc and C key, NG
Any thoughts??

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Arch won't boot after rEFInd update

Anything else I'm missing? By the way, I think this is related to the Jan 27. update to refind. Today was the first time I've rebooted my computer since then.

I was poking around the UEFI shell. The following commands caused my computer to hang (I had to hard-restart):

I could ls just fine using shell 1.0, but shell 2.0 caused a hang. Then, after the hard restart, more strange behavior:

Error. The file 'fs0:\EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi' did not open.
Also, I can "bcfg boot dump" just fine, but if I want to scroll through the output, I get an error, and it hangs, so I have to hard restart again.

Shouldn't that be sda1? Your root-partition is /dev/sda1.

IMac won't boot after iTunes Match - Get diskos2 i/o error. Help!

So after almost 24 straigth hours up uploading songs to iTunes Match, I woke up this morning and my iMac wouldn't boot. Gets stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo. I booted in verbose mode keep getting a "diskos2 i/o error." With a little googling some people say it's a bad sector and to erase and reinstall Lion others say it's a failing hard drive. Disk Utlity in Recovery Mode says the drive is ok. Any thoughts out there on what I should do? Thanks!

I am having the same problem. The machine loads just to the point when it says "Loading Mac OSX", then its non responsive for hours. The keyboard and mouse still work, but it won't move past that point.
When I try to repair the disk, it gives me an error message indicating that the disk cannot be repaired. I am bad at backing up my files, so I want to avoid a fresh reinstallation.
The worst part is I had just purchased Disk Warrior, and that won't boot up.
If no solutions are found, does anyone know a way that to initiate the computer in disk mode, so I can hook up another Mac to it, and save all the files?

G4 PowerMac mirrored drives won't boot after software update

This IS NOT about my PB but a PowerMac tower, G4, mirrored drive....running 10.5 (I think).
After some month of neglect, did software update yesterday.... 7 programs including a security update, iTurnes, QT, and I'm not sure what else.
Now it won't boot.
I have a Disk Warrior CD, but I can't get the SuperDrive door open to try to boot from it.

In worst case scenario I wonder if sticking some tape to the door to get access to the drive itself, then using a straightened paperclip in the eject hole (do they still have those?) would work.

Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

Jaguar won't boot after iPod updater install

My Jaguar (10.2.8) will not boot after I installed (via Software Updater) the iPod Updater 2005-11-17 on my iMac.
I've run Repair Permissions and Repair Disk using Disk Utilities (from both a Jaguar and Panther install CD) and zapped PRAM (3x). No problems show up on Repair Disk. I get the start up chime and a gray screen with the gray Apple logo, but no spinning circle. That's as far as it goes. I cannot boot to Safe or Single-user mode (not sure what I can run except fsck -y).
I can, however, boot to OS 9.1.x on the hard disk; I'm hoping to copy/recover files over the newtwork.
Any ideas (short of erase/partitioning drive and reinstall OS)?
(Don't know if this has anything to do with my post- iPod Update 2005-11-17 problems, but. . . My original iMac drive was 4Gb. I Carbon Copy Cloned the whole disk to a formatted 30Gb hard drive mounted in an external USB drive enclosure, removed the larger drive from the enclosure and installed it in the iMac. Worked like a charm. I've used it this way for almost a year, enduring several application updates, e.g. security updates, QuickTime, iTunes, even one iPod updater. I have noticed, however, that I cannot reinstall Jaguar or install Panther to this HD because the system is not in the first 8Gb of the hard drive. Apparently, I need to create a partition on this 30Gb drive that is < 8Gb in size before I can proceed with the install/reinstall. I thought this limitation was corrected with Panther, but not so?)

Figured it out.
I couldn't boot to OS X because, it seems, the iPod updated caused Jaguar to behave in it's predictable pattern of not booting properly from a partition > 8Gb in size on this iMac (a 233Mh model that Apple says is affected in this way, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235). In my case, I had Carbon Copy Cloned my 10.2.8 to a 18Gb drive. No problems occurred with running it. However, this was the first set of updaters I've installed on that OS since that cloning operation. And it simply wouldn't boot.
I booted to OS 9, copied files to a laptop over the network, pulled out the Jaguar install disks and repartitioned the drive to include one partition <8Gb in size, installed the OS there. All's fine now, just have to hassle with moving all those files back and testing.
I could have used a repartitioner (FWB Partitioner Tool for OS 9, <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.publishingperfection.com/fwb-software/fwb201/, other dynamic partitioners are available for OS X) to make the < 8Gb partition within my OS 9 boot and avoid deleting everything on the drive in the process. But I didn't figure this out until I'd already backed everything up. Plus, I didn't want to pay the extra bucks and wait for shipping. So I used Disk Utility on my Jaguar install disk to create my < 8Gb partition for Jaguar. Now I have a fresh install. But I'd rather not have had to spend the time figuring all this out!!

My apple mail has an error message and won't open after iTunes update 6/20/14

I have a MacBook 13 Aluminum using Mountain Lion/MavericksX. Soon after I did a random update for iTunes mid June 2014 I noticed that I could no longer open my mail on my desktop. I did tell Apple about it when the error message came up, but I haven't heard anything and the last update 7/1/14 didn't help. I can use Entourage, but I like Apple mail better. Any ideas? Yow

I had all but given up on the Apple mail. Then I remembered that I hadn't checked it since my last X update yesterday. So, I tried and of course, APPL fixed it. Apple is so fantastic. Sorry but there is no problem to work on.

Well I feel a bit silly about this. I gave up on Apple mail and was using Entourage. Yesterday I did the most recent update from APPL and hadn't checked to see if they'd come up with a fix. I'd written them to ask about it because the error occurred after the iTunes update so I figured there was a bug. I just opened it, and poof, apple mail again. It did go through something and dinged and opened. Thank you for writing me. Y

Outlook won't close after iTunes update

Any one else notice this after the last iTunes / Quicktime update?
After the most recent iTunes update, Outlook 2003 will no longer close completely. It stays active in the systray (that's the bottom right of the screen with the time) even though it's been closed appropriately.
The reason this is a problem is the following:
- Outlook continues to pull mail off the POP server. My wife's iphone never sees new email because it's already been pulled by Outlook.
The workaround is to log completely off of that windows account so Outlook is forced to close. (There are several other workarounds, but that one is easy...)
Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem - since I updated to iTunes 10, my Outlook 2007 just isn't working properly. When I close Outlook, it doesn't compeltely close. Like you, I have the grey Outlook icon in the status bar and have to close it (which probably isn't doing wonders for the .pst file) Disabling the Change Notifier doesn't seem to make any difference. Also when I actually have Outlook open, my messages are not being sent or received correctly - it seems to just sit there saying receiving message X of X and doesn't do anything else.

hey, i have run into the exactly same issue with my Omni 10 - Win 8. there was a BIOS update available in the HP Assistant app, i installed it and rebooted. Now no display on boot. On pressing the power button, i just get a usual small vibreation of the tablet switching on, and then nothing happens. the vibreation keeps repeating every 10-15 seconds. there is no display. i have tried with power+vol up and also power+ vol down button combos, but it just keeps vibrating every 10-15 seconds with no display. was a solution found for this?

Helix died on me, won't boot after BIOS update

I just did a BIOS update the other day. No idea what version it is. When I booted it said it "detection error on HDD...". I have since reset the BIOS options to default, and now it boots to a DOS-like boot screen that shows the ATA HDD0 drive. But selecting it and hitting enter just flashes the screen and nothing happens.
When I attach a USB thumb drive with Linux, it shows up in the options on the DOS-like boot screen, but selecting it won't boot from it.
The laptop is now totally uselss and I'm losing days of time and it's a major problem. What to do?

Hello. Assuming that you have not clean installed a new operating system, and you've got the
original Win8 installation on your Helix.
Enter your BIOS setup by pressing F1 when the Lenovo logo appears.
Go to Security - Secure Boot and set it to Disabled if you want to boot any other OS than Win8.
If you're happy with just running Windows 8 on it, then I recommend Secure Boot to be set to ON.
Go to Startup - Boot - and on top should be Windows Boot Manager.
With Secure Boot set to on, UEFI/Legacy Boot is greyed out and set to UEFI Only.
With Secure Boot set to off, and you want to boot other OS, like Linux, it should be set to both.
Check these settings and see if your machine boots.

MacBook won't boot after installing update 10.9.2

Hi there,
After successfully installing the 10.9.2 update on my MacBook Pro, I was able to boot to the updated system once. Then, suddently my macBook crashed and I was unable to boot again.
I managed to find a way to backup my files using the recovery mode and the Disk utility, however this wasn't straightforward to me since I was using FileVault..
Does anybody else have a similar experience with the 10.9.2 update?

The login screen appears as usual, and I am able to put username/password. Then, it fails to login and it returns the user to the login screen without mouse or keyboard working.
I booted using Command Button + S (single-user mode) and I see the error
"error loading mach kernel 0xe"
At least, I am able to boot in recovery mode to backup my disk :-)

HP Omni 10 5600 Tablet won't boot after BIOS update

The tablet is not loaded (boot) after update bios. The screen was dark during update bios in windows 8.1, there is vibration when you press the power button 5-10sec. Or vibration when you press the touch button Win. Help please.

I had a similar issue. Hold the power button for approximatel 6-10 seconds and see if you see the anything on the screen. It worked for me. Also try and connect a usb keyboard if you have one.
I would do this with the power supply plugged in to the tablet as well. Good luck.

While trying to back up my iPhone 4S to iTunes, I received a message that iTunes had to be upgraded. I did the upgrade, but my computer won't start now. I get a white screen with the spinning wheel. (Like the computer is trying to boot). Any fixes?

IMac Won't Boot After Software Update

First off, I'd like to say that this is not my computer, rather a friend's; therefore I don't know a lot of what happened before the install.
So, my friend said that he opened iTunes and got an update message. I asked him if he had ever updated his Mac since he got it (August 2010) and he said no. By the way he explained it, it sounds like when he pressed yes to update, it opened up "software update" and also updated some other things. He was asked if the computer can restart and he said yes.
When the computer restarted, it showed the usual Apple logo and spinning indicator. But, it also showed a loading progress bar. Now, I am not sure how far it went, he said about 50%, but it then shut itself off. When he tried turning it on again, it did the same thing.
Finally I showed up and after seeing that happening over and over, I called Apple. The employee told me to safe boot, PRAM, etc and nothing worked. Then I tried verifying and repairing the hard drive using the install disk but the computer got an error saying something like this: "cannot repair disk, try backing up and reinstalling..." The Apple employee told that the computer cannot be fixed and it either had to be "erased and reinstalled" or to try and get the data saved which would cost "hundreds or even thousands."
Is there any way to fix this? I'd really like to help him save all his pictures, documents, etc. Thank you!
PS: His computer is a 21.5" iMac (mid 2010 model). I believe it was running 10.6.

That's because the volume is too damaged to mount. Depending on how valuable the data is, you should either remove the drive and send it to a recovery service, which will be very expensive as you've been advised, or try one of the software packages that purport to be able to recover data from an unmountable partition. I have no experience with those products because I make backups. Maybe someone else here can make a specific recommendation.
