Os x 10.10.1 makes my imac freeze

When I try to install the 10.10.1 update on my imac it makes the computer freeze.
I restart the computer to install the update. A filler bar appears, and it starts to install the update. But when the filler bar is about a quarter full, it disappears and leaves a grey screen where nothing happens, no matter how long I wait. I have tried several times. Finally I had to re-install all the content on my mac from timemachine, and now I don´t dare to install 10.10.1 again. What is wrong?

Perhaps a corrupt download. If you want to try again, try here.

  • IMac freezes during download of a podcast or import of a CD with iTunes

Downloading a podcast or the import of a CD makes my iMac freeze quite often, at least occasionally. Sometimes iMac freezes just playing a song. I have got MacOS 10.6.8 and the latest iTunes version. I'm afraid there is a corrupted song somewhere. How can I find it?

This problem has been driving me crazy for some time. It happens when any of my podcasts finish downloading while I am watching another video podcast. The video podcast I am currently watching pauses for usually at least 30 seconds but progresses without the playback. I am running iTunes on my Macbook Pro with 2GB ram. I assumed for the longest time it was the 5400 rpm drive but I'm not sure. I hope someone has a helpful hint! TIA, Brian

  • What do I need to make my iMac + xbox 360 hook up to my current router

I need to find a way to make my iMac wireless and don't know what would be best for my set up. I have cable broadband through a rca router, which then hooks up to my vonage phone device, which then connects to my linksys WRT150N which has an emachines pc through ethernet and a sony laptop wireless connected to it. I want the iMac, which is downstairs to be hooked up to the internet wirelessly if possible and my son also has a wireless adapter for his XBOX 360 that he wants to use as well. I know this sounds tres' complicated and I have given lots of information here but if anyone knows what I should get for this situation, I would be most appreciative! Airport of some sort? Third party stuff that's compatible? I am so confused!

Achieving data rates of 54 Mbps requires that all users have an AirPort Extreme Card and connect to an AirPort Extreme Base Station. If a user of a Wi-Fi Certified 802.11b product joins the network, that user will get up to 11 Mbps and AirPort Extreme users will get less than 54 Mbps. Actual speed will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network and other factors.
imac specification I am guessing your imac g4 is usb 2 and requires an airport extreme wireless card.
The xbox360 wireless adaptor should be able to connect to your router.
To enable the imac to stream photos, movies, music to xbox360 you'll need a piece of software called Connect360. you get that here: http://www.nullriver.com/products/connect360
I'll give you my network setup if yours fails.
Two Apple Extreme N routers, First router hardwired to cable modem and the "bridged" second apple router. The first router also has a HP laserjet 24/7 connected to its usb port and one more hardwire to a pc laptor downstairs(no wireless card in the piece of crap windows machine). Second router hard waired to Vonage and an Apple Express router which I set up to create its own network. The xbox360 upstairs wirelessly connects to the Apple Express. I also have apple TV wireless to first apple Extreme router. Everything works fine and network is extremely fast.

  • How do i make my iMAC discoverable by the smart TV on my home network

Having upgraded from a PC to an iMAC my Sony Bravia TV does not find the iMAC on my home network. Previously my PC on the network was recognised enabling me to view JPEG and video files on the TV. How do I now make my iMAC discoverable?

That's not how you connect an iPad to a "home network." You connect the iPad to the WiFi router using the SSID and password for the router. You're trying to use Windows network setup, which, in addition to being one of the worst networking software ever invented, isn't how you add devices to a network.

If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

  • How Can i clean my memory and make my imac more faster ?

I am new user in mac i have imac 4 g ram  and need a way to clean the memory and make my imac more faster ...

You can't "clean" RAM. If the "storage" space on your hard drive isn't enough then put in a larger hard drive or delete any of your data you no longer need or can store on an external drive. Beyond this I cannot say because you have not provided enough information such as the amount of installed RAM, Capacity of your hard drive and the amount of available space on the hard drive, the specific iMac model you have.
    You can try reinstalling Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
However, if your computer doesn't have enough RAM or your hard drive is full, then reinstalling won't help.

  • How can i make my iMac stop asking for passwords?

How on earth can I make my iMac quit asking me for passwords? I've tried a few attempts at resetting Keychain passwords. Nothing I do seems to change any behaviors. I'm also complete noob to Mac so go easy with the jargon. I've even had a session an apple support person and fixed it temporarily.

  • Is there any way to just make my iMac go back to factory specs?

is there any way to just make my iMac go back to factory specs after erasing everything and trying to reinstall many times with no luck? not too sure what i did but installer "cant copy necesary files" dont know anything about computers.
    <Re-Titled By Host>

You can also reset the OS without using the install disk.
I found a youtube tutorial that had a wonderful step by step process for resetting to factory specs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0RQT9UiwkQ
I did a clean install - I did not have any paperwork or info for the computer because it was given to me after my FIL died.  I used my own apple ID not my FIL's.
There was no difficulty at any point.
I set up my Mac next to my PC and ran the tutorial on the PC while I worked on the reset.  Make sure you have all day because it's very time consuming.
I am a slightly technical person, but no computer whiz - so don't be afraid to tackle this on your own.
After I reset to factory default, I upgraded to Mountain Lion for $20.  That was also simple to do.
I did not back up any files since there wasn't anything on the computer I wanted to keep.  You will have to back up any files you wish to keep because this clean install will be just that - very clean - nothing was left except the OS.

  • Can I make my iMac 10.6.8 work with a usb superdrive? The internal disk reader stopped working.

Can I make my iMac OS X(10.6.8) work with a usb superdrive? The internal disk reader stopped working.

There are a couple of Apple Superdrives - one will only work with a couple of semi-resent Mac models without a Superdrive; the other supposedly works with all newer models without a superdrive. One of them will not work with any Mac which has a (non-working) built-in Superdrive.
So, the best way around this is to buy a third party DVD drive/burner.

  • Help Make my iMac New Again!

    Hey there friends,
Here's my deal. I just got a new MacBook Pro for my wife and it's blazing fast. So much so that it has caused resentment towards my old, slow iMac G4. I figure after five years of futzing with it, I've installed a number of things that are probably slowing it down. In all my OS upgrades over the years I've always gone for the easy install. But it's time for my iMac to reborn, like the little speed demon she once was.
I just got a 250GB Firewire external hard drive (7200rpm/8mb cache). I have my Tiger install discs back out again. What now? I figure I'll use SuperDuper to make an exact copy of my hard drive on the external. But then what?
    * What's the optimal way to make my iMac factory fresh?
    * Once I install it, what can I copy back over from the my external hard drive and what should I freshly re-install? I don't want to waste too much time, but I also don't want to bog down the computer again.
    * Also, since I haven't done it yet, I have over 30 GB of music. Am I better off keeping that on the external hard drive or will I notice a lag when trying to play things?
A link to a previous post you found helpful (or wrote) and/or a link to a guide you've used for such a situation would be helpful. Or why not type up a fresh one and help me and certainly others with this somewhat terrifying but ultimately liberating procedure.
    Thanks,

Honestly, I think what you propose to do is the wrong path. Making an iMac G4 "factory fresh" is not going to yield a signficant performance increase. Your "factory fresh" iMac will still be running on the same hardware with the same OS and presuambly the same apps. So you are proposing to spend a lot of time trying to fix a problem that can't be fixed in that manner.
What you need to look at is possibly optimizing your iMac's hard drive with Disk Warrior and perhaps adding more RAM if its RAM is not already maxed out.
You might also look at utilization of your iMac's boot drive. You need to make sure that 10-15% of the disk's total capacity is always available to the OS for internal use.
Doing this stuff might yield an improvement in processing speed, but do not expect anything near to what you see on your wife's new MacBook Pro. To get that kind of performance boost, you need to replace your iMac with a modern Mac.

  • IMac Freezing - No video glitch, but unresponsive

    Good morning all,
In the past week or so, I've started to have problems with my iMac freezing. This has occurred while using iChat, playing World of Warcraft and while using Safari (not all at once).
In short, the video display seems to freeze. I can still hear audio (ie. the other person on iChat speaking), but everything else in non-responsive. The keyboard does not respond and I cannot ALT-Tab or open any other programs. My only recourse is to manually turn off the computer and try again.
It's usually a guaranteed failure when opening up Warcraft. About 4 seconds after the program has opened, the computer freezes.
I've searched the forums and have come across several threads that involve some sort of graphical glitch, from which I do not suffer. That being said, I thought a new thread might be appropriate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

My iMac has been repeatedly freezing when I am working in Final Cut Express. It plays the sound but freezes the video. It has been a horrible experience to try to edit 'blind'!
I have vacuumed the air vents, installed smcFan Control (great to manual adjust fan speeds on all 3 internal fans), re-installed Snow Leopard & gone through copious hours as all the software updates each time I've re-installed, and I run the disc doctor program. It started happening around the time Steve Jobs said Apple would no longer use Flash. I thought it a Flash issue since it only has to do with the playback of video. Today I discovered that clips I downloaded yesterday were also freezing in my desktop Picasa. Meaning it's not Final Cut, or Picasa, and unlikely my video card as all videos streamed from the NET (on YouTube, etc) play fine, and in fact my videos that freeze on my iMac when uploaded to YouTube or Facebook play fine.
I am enormously and thoroughly frustrated, as you can imagine. I had 15 clips from the G20 Protest March yesterday and was not able to make an adequate video to upload out of them because the video keeps freezing, and losing synch with the audio - and every time you try to play it, it freezes in a different spot!!
    Horrendous problem.
Today, then, following advice in this thread, I will try re-installing back an update or so on OSX - I'm using 10.6.4, and perhaps need to go backwards?
This is an awful problem and I am surprised Apple hasn't addressed it. Perhaps it only relates to computers a few years old?
A usually very happy iMac user who is very disgruntled these days...

  • Keep getting message - You need to restart your computer - iMac freezes

My iMac freezes without notice, a dark screen comes over the monitor and the message "you need to restart your computer" appears.
This happens randomly and I have no idea what causes this. I thought perhaps it was just a loose power cord, as the cord does seem quite loose.
However, it happens after the machine has been running for some time. Before I have a chance to save my work, the computer tells me it has to shut down. It's not a consistent thing, so it's hard to know if it's the cord or not.
This also happened half way through watching a DVD. Nothing was touched or moved, so it wouldn't appear that this is being caused by a loose cord.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? (I'm running Tiger on this machine with 700+ megs of RAM plus am using a Mac keyboard. Airport is installed but not in use.

    Hi there,
I would first make sure your Mac is or isn't on any list contained here: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/imac.html - you may in fact have a faulty power supply which is covered by repair extension through Apple.

  • My Imac freezes 5 x a day at least... please help!!!

    Hello,
I'm pulling my hair out because I use my Imac for all my work. Everyday I hold down the reset button *at least 5 times* because the Imac freezes.
    -Updated all software
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Bought another gig of ram
-Won't completely verify disk, says: *Error: underlying task reported failure on exit, 1HFS volume needs repair*
    - Won't allow me to repair disk
What I don't get is that when things freeze, I hit force quit and they don't quit?!! I mean the little black arrow remains underneath the icon. Then I hit "restart" in menu and it won't restart, it just freezes. I thought that was the whole point of force quitting?
So after the screen just freezes blue with the black spinning icon, I have to hold the reset button. Sometimes I don't even get that far, I have to do it on the desktop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! The guy at the computer store said good luck when I asked if anyone in town fixed Macs, lol!

+Won't allow me to repair disk+
It is a different procedure from repairing permissions, which was not the problem, but which you did correctly perform. You can only repair disk using Disk Utility on another volume, not from the same volume, and the other volume must be the same version of OS X.
If you are still using Tiger 10.4.11, not Leopard or SL, boot from your grey-labeled Install Disc and after the first screen there will be a menu bar at the top that includes a Utilities menu from which you can choose Disk Utility. You will be able to try the Repair Disk button, and you should run it completely through at least twice to see if you can get it repaired.
Then quit and restart, don't continue further into the install process. Eject the Install Disc.
If your OS X is now Leopard or SL, make sure that you use the same disc that installed your current OS X.
