OS X 10.2.8 on a Compaq Armada

Hi,
I've got an old Compaq Armada 1560 and i wondered if i could install OS X 10.2.8 on it?
If yes, how can i do this, do i need a special app to do this,
Thx

Hi der reiter,
no, you cannot install MacOS X on any other computer but an Apple computer.
However, it DOES work the other way round: If you buy a new Apple computer with Intel processors you are able to install Windows or Vista on a separate partition and switch between the systems at startup. Benchmarks prove that XP runs an new Apple computers natively even a little faster than on other comparable x86 machines.

  • Solaris 8 on Compaq Armada E500

Anyone install solaris 8 on Compaq Armada E500, I am having problems with the graphics card, ATI RAGE Mobility-P AGP card.
Is any of the other cards compatible with this system.

The first thing to do with a Compaq is make sure the latest and greatest rompaq has been applied to the board and all devices. Next, download and use the latest and greatest Solaris DCA diskette and use it for the install boot. I am making the assumption you are using the CD this time around. If that doesnt work, you will have to remove all but the bare minimun of hardware and try the install then add each device one by one. The DCA diskettes are updated regularly so thelatest one may solve the issue.

  • DOS PCMCIA support for old Compaq Armada 1571DM

    Hi there,
I have recently purchased an old Compaq Armada 1571DM for a project I'm currently in, which requires both portability and the availability of a couple of COM (serial) ports. The laptop comes with a single serial port, so I thought to add the second one I need via a PCMCIA to serial card adapter. So I purchased one of these too.
The problem I faced is that the software I use to access the serial ports runs on DOS only, and as far as I could find on the internet, there seems to be no DOS driver/card enabler for this particular laptop.
I'll very much preciate your help, as I'm stuck on this issue for a long time now, and I really need to make it work.
    Thank you very much.
    Best regards.
PS.: under Windows 98 everything seems to work: PCMCIA sockets are detected, and PCMCIA adapter is properly recognized and installed thru its provided drivers.

  • Compaq Armada

I have just installed (don't laugh) Windows 7 Starter Edition on my Compaq Armada 110 notebook and have found a Vista/Win7 driver that works for my Sweex PCMCIA card. Unfortunately I have not been so lucky with my sound. I have not, as yet, found a sound driver that works ( I tried the Realtek Vista HD audio driver without success). Apart from that, all seems to be OK and the install went without incident.
Does anybody know what works and where I can download it?

Windows automatic updates today issued an update to the AC97 audio driver. Voila, problem resolved instantly after two days of unproductive web searching!

  • Compaq Armada M700 & ATI Rage Mobility

Hi. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help. I installed Solaris 8 on my Compaq Armada M700 notebook and have had endless trouble getting the display drivers to work.
Does anyone know of any available driver for the ATI RAGE Mobility-P AGP ? I have had to resort to using RedHat Linux which does have drivers for the time being ...

You can go to www.xig.com ,as far as i knew , solaris doesn't support
ATI Rage Mobility-P , I have a same problem like yours , but I am using ATI Rage 128 Mobility (M3) , for more information you can go to

  • PCMCIA on Compaq Armada M700

    Hi
I have installed Solaris 8 x86 on my Compaq Armada M700 laptop. Everything works fine including video which I installed XFree86 for, except that Solaris does not see my PCMCIA controller.
Does anyone have any sugegstions ?
    Best Regards / Gareth

Does PCMCIA come with a Solaris driver ? I believe it needs a driver
which can recognize the pcmcia card when inserted or to talk to it.
You can look through these sites to find the hardware compatibility
list for your pcmcia card, and there are other driver related
information on these sites, which may help.

  • Configuring Xorg on Compaq Armada E500

I have a Compaq Armada E500 laptop that I'm installing Arch on. I have the base Arch install done, and I'm now trying to get Xorg to work properly. The problem I'm having is that none of the automatic configuration tools mentioned in the wiki (Xorg -configure, xorgconfg, hwd, xorgconfig) work properly, and neither does just running without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. It tries to use the vesa driver, which only gives me a 800*600 resolution, even though the screen is 1400*1050. I have tried installing the both the xf86-video-ati and the xf86-video-r128 drivers and activating them by setting the driver in Xorg.conf, but that doesn't work. Catalyst (the proprietary driver) also does not work. Here is my xorg.conf file:

  • Can the compaq armada m300 support a 40gb hdd from a presario2000us with or without an os ???

just  would like to know if the compaq  armada notebook/laptop can support a 40Gb hdd internal from the presario 2100us laptop/notebook with or without an OS already on the hdd???

    Hi:
When I compare the specs between the two machines, even though the m300 states max drive is 12 GB, I see no reason why it won't take a 40 GB drive.
I have an old Dell C610 that came with a 10 GB 4200 RPM HDD and when the drive died, I bought a 60 GB 5400 RPM HDD, and it has performed flawlessly ever since.

  • Sounds Familiar? Apple, Compaq, Sony

A lot of space that is taken up by the great 'logic board' debate here. For those of you have somehow managed to miss it there are two camps.
    1. Unlucky people with dead laptops who believe there is some ongoing deficiency in the manufacture of G4 iBooks.
    2. The rest of us - who whilst sympathising - know that statistically around one in ten iBooks will get a problem - and that the 'logic board' being 80% of the computer is where it's likely to be.
I have posted may times statistics (that are easy to find on the net) that the iBook is one of the most reliable laptops you can buy - but that laptops are more prone to faults in general than desktop PCs for obvious reasons.
I don't work for Apple and I'm not on a mission, other than to say that switching to Macs tangibly improved my life (seriously) because of the frustration it removed and the productivity I managed to achieve with them over using Windows PCs. I've had around 10 in total and never yet had a hardware ptroblem. So, I just wouldn't want potential 'switchers' to be put off by the out of balance picture you can get from here. Maybe that is a mission..
Anyway - after reading through the latest additions to this debate, I decided to look at Forums on other brands of laptop . I don't think most of you would be suprised at what I found:
"I was Sony laptop loyal customer because of its good looking and some special design. i have bought 2 Sony laptop in 3years, however the Sony laptop made me sick. I just would like to tell somebody :Sony laptop's quality and aftersale servive are rubbish!rubbish! my opion is from my very bad personal experience."
"I have just over 100 Compaq Armada 100s laptop purchased early in 2001. Over 60 have developed cracks in the lid just above the left hinge and at the front corners. I had one of these on a VP''s desk, no abuse, and it cracked. Compaq has denied any other reports of this with any other customer, just my problem they say."
"I am having a running discussion with Sony after purchasing a Vaio. Ahem... I am VERY glad that I bought a 3 yr Sony warranty because the latest charade will be the 5th engineers visit in 18months!!
paid for the Sony Vaio computer, in hope to get a better service and better quality, but no.....Never buy any Sony Vaio"
"I brought compaq presario from pc world 2 years ago. It was slow, awfully built, broke down repeatedly and ive finally had enough!"
"my previous previous laptop, was a Dell, and after three motherboards, two hard drives, two CD drives, four keyboards, and about 18 hours listening to their on-hold music, I decided that their half life was somewhat unacceptable"
Examples like these are very easy to find - try it if you can be bothered. In fact this forum glows with warmth in comparison to most!
As ever, my point is that laptops are, by nature, more prone to fail than desktops and you've more chance of being lucky with an Apple. They top the consumer charts for reliability in portables from almost every source you can find.
    Intel iMac 17 : Mac Mini 1.25 : iBook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Similar stories on Dell's website, too.
I would have to replace my iBook every few months before I would consider using another OS. I would either go back to using a desktop exclusively (iMac) or give up the computer altogether before going to Windows.
Like many cleaning ladies, I don't DO Windows!
I would recommend buying AppleCare with any portable, just because of the more knockabout nature of a portable computer. While AppleCare does not cover accidental damage or abuse, it is expected that you will be carrying the iBook around with you. Failures that result from expected usage ARE covered.

  • Cannot Install OS 8.1 on new hard drive, 233 G3 Powerbook

    Ok, so here's the deal.
I have an old Powerbook G3 Wallstreet. 233 Mhz 13" screen.
I recently ran into a problem where I booted up, and the hard drive (original 2GB) was erased. Completely reinstalled, and as soon as it rebooted after the install, the hard drive was empty again. Weird.
So, I decide to reinstall OS8 on a new hard drive. I have an older 20 GB drive from a compaq Armada M700, which I had replaced with a newer 120 GB drive, so I used that in the Powerbook.
Anyway, I've tried lots of things. Fully empty nonpartitioned drive, single 8GB partition by using MacDisk in windows, multiple 8GB partions, what have you. Disk Setup does not see any hard drive I place in the powerbook. I tried both the 120 and the 20 GB.
Any suggestions? I only have a Windows machine to work with, as the G3 is my only Mac. (Well, I have a graphite iMac, but it's suffering from the screen shrinking/power down problem common to those units, so I can't really do anything with it.)

    ShatteredOne,
When you have installed the OS and restarted, did you get the blinking '?' alternating with a folder? If so, try resetting the PRAM to possibly correct this issue.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Will the Wallstreet boot to the MacOS 8.1 CD? If so, try Drive Setup on the 8.1 CD again after resetting the PRAM.
The original Wallstreet shipped with a special OS 8.1 CD (green label) since the retail MacOS 8.1 CD will not have the necessary Powerbook G3 enabler file.
You do not have to partition the HD, but just make sure you are have formatted as HFS Extended although HFS Standard will work. However, on a large drive like the 120GB, you will have a lot of wasted space due to the block size.
If still having problems, install the original 2GB HD > boot to the 8.1 CD > open the utilities folder on the CD > Drive Setup and select 'zero all data' when you initialize; now run the Test Disk test and see if it passes. If it fails, zero/test one more time.

  • Live! Cam Voice + Windows 2000 - No video input

    Hi all,
Since purchasing my Live! Cam Voice, I've always used it with a Windows XP Home machine. Recently, though, I tried to use it with a laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. The installation process encounters no problems and applications like MSN Messenger detect the cam without any difficulty. However, when *any* application attempts to view video from the camera, nothing is returned but darkness (I have lights on :-P) - it's as though it's simply not been switched on. Anyone got any ideas for dealing with this?
    Mike
    If anyone's interested, the laptop's spec is . . .
Model - Compaq Armada M700 (USB2 connectivity provided via PCMCIA card)
    CPU - Intel P3 650Mhz
    Memory - 92MB
    HD - 6GB
Not sure about anymore details of the spec (graphics accelerator, etc) - I guess Googling for the model would give more details.

I am having the same problem. I am using windows Vista and have tried?recording sound in other applications and it works fine, just not when trying to record in LIVE! cam. I jbought this cam 2 months ago and just now find out it does not work when I need it the most. I am due to give a video presentation in two weeks and will probably have to buy a new cam, what a dissapointment!

  • Installing Oracle 9i (version 9.0.1) on RedHat Linux 7.2

    Hi All,
I've been trying to install Oracle 9i version 9.0.1 on RedHat
Linux 7.2 with kernel 2.4.7-10. This RH 7.2 is running on my
Compaq Armada M700 laptop that has 800MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM.
I have 10GB of diskspace on this laptop.
Someone in this group posted a howto on how to install Oracle 9i
on RedHat Linux 7.2 but for some reasons, Oracle Universal Installer
still hangs at 74% of the installation. Here is what I did:
    1) Install RH 7.2 on the laptop. I also make sure that make, ar,
ld, nm and C for unix got installed when I installed RH 7.2.
I also verify by using the command "which make", "which ar",
"which ld" and "which nm" and they are also in the /usr/bin
directory. I also make the /tmp partition to be 800MB and
the swap file to be 500MB,
    2) Modify the /etc/hosts file. This part is easy. I can ping
both the hostname, FQDN and the IP address of the laptop from
both locally and remotely (tested with SSH connection),
    3) Go to blackdown.org and download jdk118_v3
    4) Uncompress and put it in the /usr/local/jdk118_v3 directory,
    5) Make a softlink ln -s /usr/local/jdk118_v3 /usr/local/java
    6) Download and install package:
    rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
    7) In /proc/sys/kernel/sem file, I modify the third column from 32 to 128,
    8) Download and install package:
    rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.11.90.0.8-9.i386.rpm
    9) Download Linux9i_Disk1.cpio, Linux9i_Disk2.cpio and Linux9i_Disk1.cpio
    to my laptop hard-drive,
    10)Run cpio -idmv < Linux9i_Disk1.cpio (for 2 and 3 well),

group "oracle". Furthermore, I also create a directory /oracle
and change the owner and group permission to account "oracle"

13)The installer will ask you to run a started script as root ,
you may open a shell and type su then open Nautilus (
if using Gnome or File manager as super user if using KDE )
and drag the noted file to the shell screen and press enter,
after it is ended continue with the installer (done),
