OS X 10.4 Tiger compatible with PBG4 1.25GHz?

Hi-
I am considering buying Mac OS X 10.4 so I can use the iPod touch on my PowerBook G4 (1.25GHZ, 512MB). Is this machine supported by OS X? Would it be wiser to upgrade to a new Mac, if performance is compromised too much? My fear is just that an updated OS X will bog down my system (I currently run 10.3.9 trouble-free and have been for the past couple of years). It will be 5 years since I bought my PB in mid-January.
Thanks!
-Daniel

As BDAqua noted, your powerbook will be just fine running Tiger, and could use more memory if you go that route.
IF you can afford a new laptop and you do a lot of graphic/photo editing, video editing, or other CPU and memory hungry tasks on a regular basis you should see a big difference if you get a new laptop (or desktop). If you do word processing, email, web surfing, etc... then an upgrade to 10.4 would be a more reasonable approach.
BD = thanks for the info on calling Apple for 10.4. I didn't realize they were still selling it.

  • Is iChat in Tiger compatible with iChat in Jaguar?

A buddy and I want to set up ichat. We both have .mac accounts, he uses Jaguar OS and I use Tiger. We both put our .mac address in the buddy list but can't seem to get a connection. Another friend has a Macbook pro and a .mac account. We had no problems. Is there an inherent problem here between Rendevous/bonjour and/or Jaguar/Tiger or have we missed something???? Any help appreciated.

    Hi el beagle amable,
iChat 1.x in Jaguar should be able to text chat to iChat 3
It was possible to buy a version of iChat for Jaguar at one point and again there should be no problem with this.

  • Is Tiger compatible with Syst 9 for Bigpond Cable!?

Hi I need Syst 9 running in the background for my bigpond cable apparently!? I read somewhere that Tiger is not compatible?! Is this true?

    Cec,
You stated/asked...Hi I need Syst 9 running in the background for my bigpond cable apparently!?BigPond makes no such claims on What are the Cable system requirements?
According to that page OS 9 is not, nor would I expect it to be a requirement for a cable connection.
By the way, Tiger does support OS 9, which is known as Classic. Mac OS X provides a compatibility layer called Classic that runs a complete Mac OS 9 installation within OS X for applications and hardware that require OS 9.
I have lost track of which computers can start (Dual Boot) using classic, your machine may or may not be able to start up in Classic.

    Hi
Preparing to upgrade to Tiger from Panther. Will I still be able to use Microsoft's Office v.X without glitches?
    My thanks,
    TF

    TF,
I can agree about the wondering if cron scripts was done on a regular basis. I have Mac Janitor on my iMac and Onyx on my iBook, due to the differences operating systems.
Impressed with Tiger? Oh my goodness YES. I'm pondering whether to upgrade these two or go for a newer Mac. I'm spending entirely to much time on my wife's Mini.
As far as antivirus I'm running Norton. It actually caught a virus on the iBook, (V.9.0),the animation was cool. Must have been a Windows virus, I know...don't want to get the replies of no known viruses on a Mac. No antivirus is on the Mini yet. Soon to be addressed.
I have read on numerous posts of unhappy experiences with Norton Disk Utilities...It may be worth a new post to see what the majority is using for an antivirus and their experiences.
As always Happy to help when I can.

    Klaus,
I just checked with my wife. All is well here. I'm sorry I can't offer much insight. I have, however, read that others have had problems in their font folder. May be related??? I'd recommend another post since this one has been indicated as answered.
    Good luck,

  • Is Photoshop Elements 2 compatible with Tiger and iWeb?

I went to the Version Tracker site but could not navigate well enough to find Photoshop Elements 2. There was a lot about Photoshop Elements 4, but not 2.
I then went to Adobe.com to find information but without results. When I entered Photoshop Elements 2 I got routed to a long list of problems, but not the more generalized issue of compatibility with OS 10.4/Tiger.
So I return to this forum with the simple question: If I upgrade to Tiger and then to iLife '06, will my existing Photoshop Elements 2 be compatible with both?
Thank you in advance for any answers to my question..........
    — Lorna in Southern California

Regarding Photoshop Elements 2 vs. Photoshop Elements
4... these are simply versions of the same basic
program. You know how software companies do things.
They pack a couple more features in and give the
software a new number every few months in the hopes
of selling a few more copies.
James, the incident that stuck in my memory was about my cousin Dale, who is a musician. He was using a certain songwriting program and was not able to upgrade to Jaguar, I think (or Panther?) because, according to him, that music writing program would not be able to work on Panther! I extrapolated from that.........

  • Printer not compatible with OS X Tiger 10.4? Help!

    Hi there,
A few months ago I bought a Konica Minolta Magicolour 2400W laser printer (in a panic, was the cheapest available - in order to print my thesis). I have since bought an Apple Mac ibookG4 running OS X Tiger 10.4. Konica Minolta tell me that this printer is not compatible with the Mac and that I can't use it. So, my current situation is that I have a £200 printer that cannot communicate with over £800 worth of new Apple equipment. I am slightly P**d off. I probably should have done my homework but didn't expect a brand new printer not to have drivers compatible with a brand new computer + operating system. Short of selling the **** printer and getting a Mac-compatible one; what can I do? Please help, any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Zoe, UK
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Looking at the Konica Minolta web site it lists only Windows support for this model.
    http://printer.konicaminolta.com/support/currentprinters/mc2400wsup.htm#Drivers
So looks like the advice was right. The Minolta 2430DL and 2450 network models do support Macs so perhaps that is the confusion.
The only option looking around is to try Foomatic-RIP for Mac OS X and EPS Ghostscript in order to use the open source driver. Checking the Linuxprinting.org web site there is indeed a working driver for your model.
However it is only a 'Filter' which will need to be compiled to work with the above. Not a straightforward exercise I am afraid. I have found a recent thread which deals with this exact same model and perhaps you could try it yourself if you feel brave, or perhaps contact the guy posting the request and ask if he can send it if he manages to compile a working version.
    The relevant thread is here:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/pipermail/macosx-list/2005q4/001449.html
If you want to have a go here is what you need to get started.
    1. So, firstly go to this web site and read the Usage guide:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/#usage
You can download the latest version of the required applications on that page too. Follow the instructions carefully.
Note that it says here that if it is just a 'Filter' then you will likely need to compile it which seems necessary.
    2. Go to this web site and download the m2300w-0.51 driver which also supports the 2400W
"The m2300w driver is a Linux printer driver for the Konica Minolta magicolor 2300W and 2400W color laser printers. It is intended for being used in conjunction with ghostscript, foomatic and CUPS."
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/m2300w/
    Good luck!

  • This machine is not compatible with Tiger OS X 10.4

Ok i'm trying to reformat my macbook pro
( 15 2.0ghz 2 gigs ram 80 gig hardrive, ALL UPDATES, FIRMWARE up to date.) I am not only unable to get it to boot from the DVD/install disk (I"ve tryed holding C/ reinserting the disk, turning it on holding C, booting from CD in startupdisk, holding c and my breath at the same time - pretty much everything. Obviously we've got a problem.
The disk is fine- reads fine, no scratches.
When I try to run OSX install from the DVD it says " Machine not compatible with tiger osx. Upon reading up on this **** it's acting like a firmware issue, however my firmware is up to date. I'm going on 3 hours of just trying to boot from my disk and I have to tell you all, I'm seriously thinking of just loading XP on this thing and calling it a night and an end to macs. I could have reformatted and loaded 4 computers if I were using XP. I appreciate any help, though and I know a lot of you are familiar grief and pain in here, so thanks for the help!

Thanks for all the help - I have wasted countless hours of my life on a computer, but I have learned. Tiger install disks are all for different machines. When I called apple for a replacement tiger disk for my macbook pro, I found out my apple care expired last month and that it would cost $40. As much as I would like to have one - i'm probably won't buy one, I'll look for "other" ways of getting one for sure.
Word to the wise - goto an apple store - they re-install tiger for free. Took me 15 minutes and cost me $0. I don't have a few apps like Ilife, and other meaningless programs that were originally on my macbook pro, but like I told the guy at apple, give me some bad news! I am so sick of macs, I"m still trying to get bootcamp to load XP over 4 days later- the pain is neverending, but thanks for the responses everyone, it's nice to know i'm not the only one in |-|ELL....

  • Latest Firefox update compatible with Mac Tiger OSX 10.4.11

Firefox notifies me that I'm not running the latest version (I have 3.6.24 GTB7.1) and to download the version compatible with my older system (Mac Tiger 10.4.11). I click on that link and can find nothing that states what systems the version(s) there are compatible with. I have in the past downloaded and installed an incompatible version, a situation to avoid for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the fast responses, I am particularly happy to have found the floodgap.com website. Didn't think that I was the only one muttering about the abandonment of two decades of pre-Intel software and tech files that my work depends on, and am glad to see some action in that direction. Surely a cottage industry will spring up to keep hardware available. I love what Apple has brought us but not their ability to turn their back on what brought them up, and millions of users in the process.

  • It seems outrageous to many of us that Firefox 4.0 would no longer be backwards compatible with at least one previous OS such as Tiger!

When I first attempted to upgrade to 4.0 on my workstations that still use Tiger, I get a message saying that “the current system is not compatible with the new version of Firefox”.
So why force people to upgrade their OS, before they can upgrade their browser?
And how can I send you any feedback (besides this email) if I need to have 4.0 to be able to even write to you?
Why don’t you provide an email address along with your physical address, so people can reach you whether or not they have
    the current version of Firefox???
I won’t upgrade my Operating System until I am ready, not because Firefox says so.

  • Is Canon ip5200 compatible with Intel Tiger or isn't it?

I have a Canon Pixma ip5200 and a (fairly) new Intel iMac with OSX Tiger. I am getting fed up with being unable to access the full range of settings - even such mundane things as print quality - when using certain applications. Photoshop and Acrobat are fine, I can select whaever I want, but apparently everything else is a problem. For example, I'm now using Firefox, I select File > Print, and find half the printing options in the dialogue box are scored out. If I try to select one, I get (for example), "This panel is not compatible with your computer. Contact the printer manufacturer for the latest version of your printer software. QualityMedia380 version 3.8.0, Copyright CANON INC. 2001-2005 All Rights Reserved.
    Link to a screenshot here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/towny/printdialogue.png
What's going on here? I have a new computer and, apparently, the latest driver (the newest version on the Canon website was issued last February). The dialogue box in 'About ip5200' says the driver is v4.4 (161.6), copyright Apple. The dialogue box above says the incompatible bits are copyright Canon. I'm confused.
One further piece to the puzzle - I found that if I set Comic Life to run through Rosetta, all printing options became avaiable. Most of them weren't by default. Sadly I can't choose Rosetta for all my apps (and I'm not sure that's supposed to be a good idea anyway).
Please, someone, save me from this insanity!
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Aside from emailing Canon UK to ask them (which I'm
going to do now) is there anything else I can try to
    make this work better?
I downloaded the driver pack from Canon's UK site and took a look at it. Everything in that pacakge is indeed a Universay Binary, so the driver should run natively on your Intel Mac.
A couple of observations. The screen shot you posted showed "QualityMedia380". That may be clue. In the package I downloaded from Canon, there is a PDE called "QualityMedia416.pde". This might indicate that you have some older stuff installed that is conflicting with the proper operation of your drivers.
Additionally, I see that the Canon drivers that are reported to be installed on Intel Macs is version 4.1.5. Again, this is older that the current drivers.
It might be worth your while to go to /Library/Printers and delete the "Canon" folder and any printer queues you have created for the Canon printer. For good measure, I would recommend you restart your computer. This shouldn't be necessary, but it will ensure a clean start of the printing services. Now reinstall the Canon 4.1.6 drivers that are on the Canon UK site and set up your printer.
If there was some old stuff interfering, this may solve the problem. If the problem persists, at least you can report that you have a clean install of the Canon drivers when you contact them.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is my Netscape 7.2 browser compatible with Tiger?

I've recently upgraded to Panther which is compatible with Netscape 7.2 as my browser for my Earthlink email client (for email and bookmarks). Will this still work if I upgrade to Tiger at 10.4.6?
My other 3rd party applications check out okay for Tiger:
    Microsoft Office v. X,
Intego NetBarrier, VirusBarrier, and NetUpdate, and
my current printer drivers for both hp printers.
I've noticed that Netscape's upgrade to version 8 is only for Windows operating systems.
    Thanks.
    Raymon

Netscape 7.2 should work with Tiger.
Intego software will likely need to get upgraded, and much of it is unnecessary, since Mac OS X has its own built-in firewall. If you want a firewall, it is better to have a router with the ability to do its own port management than use Intego's software which can slow down the Mac significantly.
The anti-virus software is somewhat more of a precaution for sharing with Windows users, as no real virus threat has yet been introduced to Mac OS X except a few Word macro viruses, though it is better to be prepared than not. I for one find the auto-virus detection systems on many anti-virus software slow down the Mac too.
There may be better updates of Office at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ for working with Mac OS X 10.4. If you find those don't work, Office 2004 does work quite well with 10.4, and you don't have to upgrade to Office 2004 if you don't want to, as http://www.neooffice.org/ also works with 10.4 and it is free.
As for your HP printer compatibility, check the website of HP for updated drivers. If it says 10.3 and above, that does not mean it is 10.4 compatible. http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html is my FAQ on printers and Mac OS X with more direct links to driver updates.

  • NVIDIA 8800gt for Mac Pro (mid 2007 models) not compatible with TIGER !

Just tried to install Tiger on a hard drive while i was successfully able to use the NVIDIA 8800gt in Leopard on another hard drive and the computer would either stall or just have the gray screen come up. Brought it to Tekserve and they said Apple doesn't have firmware for this yet and it won't run on Tiger.. runs flawlessly on Leopard.. anyone have updates on this?

I purchased the 8800 card intending to run it with Tiger. I was assured both by the sales person I spoke with, and the engineer they checked with that it would work under Tiger. I even asked if it came with a driver CD and they said no, but it wasn't needed, it would "just work".
Of course, when I got it and put it in my Mac Pro running 10.4.11, it didn't boot. Then I realized there was a sticker on the box that said it required "10.5.2". I checked the product web page and it did not mention Leopard as a requirement. However, as of Monday April 28th, this was added to the web page. I have a screenshot from two days before which doesn't list it.
Anyway, I've returned the card and will be credited, but I am very disappointed. I can only conclude there was every intention to support tiger (probably with a Tiger Graphics Update 1.0 or some such) but this wasn't ready in time and they hastilty had to slap on the "10.5.2 required" sticker to the boxes.
Hopefully this update will come out at some point, and then I can repurchase the card. (I do not wish to upgrade to Leopard until the finder is fixed.) It would also be nice is there was a 10.4.12 release that supports the new Mac Pro's (hint: you'll get more sales if you do!)
If all else fails maybe ATI will have a new card out in the near future, and hopefully will support Tiger. I think they do a better job on drivers than nvidia anyway.
