OS X (10.5.2) constantly changing set default programs

After upgrading to Leopard from Tiger I am encountering the following problem:
OS X is constantly changing my set default programs to whatever is the default when you install it fresh.
For example:
I have Firefox set as default for webbrowsing, Adium as default for chatting, and VLC as default for video playback.
When I restart OS X, everything is changed back to Safari, iChat, and QuickTime. Also my file associations are changed with every restart.
Repairing Permissions does not help and I have done that at least 10 times now.
Deleting the Applications and reinstalling them does also not help.
Are there any solutions to this? I would prefer not having to reinstall Leopard with all the applications, because I do not have the DVDs for all the software at the moment.
Thanks for any help!
Further info: I did Archive and Install for putting Leopard on this MBP. I have the latest updates installed and the latest versions of the applications, etc.

Download the free updates to Quark 6.5 and 6.52 to see if that fixes it. Otherwise, you should consider posting your question on Quark's discussion forums:

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions
Control-click a pdf file and choose "Get Info". In the Info window choose which application to open the file with and then click on the "change all" button. Voila!

  • How do you set default programs for all users when deploying Windows 8.1?

I have my Windows 8.1 image set up the way I want including the start screen, theme, etc. But how can I set the default programs for all users. Most of out computers are non-touch and I want the desktop apps (e.g. Windows Photo Viewer), not the store apps
to be the default for opening pictures, videos, etc. Can that be done?

Great question, this has been bugging me too!
So, I did some research by using "Set Default Programs" app in Windows 8. Then I ran the super ProcMon.exe tool from Sysinternals.com <Thanks Mark!>
After filtering out the junk, I could see some *interesting* writes to the registry:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\UserChoice]
    "Hash"="57y87/ogggU="
    "ProgId"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Jpeg"
But the "Hash" part had me concerned. I did some internet searching for the hash, and came across a post and a pointer to a blog with some answers.  This is both good news and bad.
    Background:
One of the problems with Windows XP is that any program can come in and party on the entire system. No, I don't want you to put a shortcut on the desktop, install a crappy IE Toolbar, and change the default file association for *.jpg files to your app, I
just wanted to play a stupid game. Since Windows 7, Microsoft has been attempting to block that functionality from the stupid applications, and give them back to the user. Take note of the last line in the ITaskbarList3 interface:
Applications cannot programmatically pin themselves to the taskbar. That functionality is reserved strictly for the user.
Of course that sucks for us IT Pros who may wish to create *default* working environments for corporate images, but there are some tricks we can do.
    Solution:
This blog appears to have the answer:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mrmlcgn/archive/2013/02/26/windows-8-associate-a-file-type-or-protocol-with-a-specific-app-using-a-gpo-e-g-default-mail-client-for-mailto-protocol.aspx
New for Windows 8 is a dism command: /Get-DefaultAppAssociations that allows you to export a control case from a known good computer. Microsoft the supports importing the exported xml file via GPO. For example, before I changed the file association, .AVI
was pointing to the Modern App, after the change the /export-DefaultAppAssociations shows change to the new app:
    From:
    <Association Identifier=".avi" ProgId="AppXhjhjmgrfm2d7rd026az898dy2p1pcsyt" ApplicationName="Video" />
    To:
    <Association Identifier=".avi" ProgId="VLC.avi" ApplicationName="VLC media player" />
I am still doing some investigation to see if a GPO is required, or if you can inject the association into a local user account. Also, if you do have some Modern Windows 8 Touch Tablets, it would recomend keeping most of the Modern App defaults in place,
perhaps seperate GPO's for Desktops/Laptops vs Tablets?

  • How to set default programs???

    How to set default programs?
An example: when I click on a .doc it opens in TextEdit, but I want it to open with NeoOffice (to make that happen now requires right-click>open with>NeoOffice)
How can I set NeoOffice as the default program for .doc, .xls, .ppt?
And set default programs for other files?
    Thanks.

    redaple
Select a .doc and go File -> Get Info
In the resulting window you'll see a pane called Open With... Select your preference from the Drop Down. To make the new app default for all these types, click 'Change All...'

  • Setting Default Programs

    Hi
I have previously mentioned this but didn't get much help. So I am asking the question again hoping to be clearer this time.
I have a problem with associating programs I want to open certain files. For instance, I press command+I and set 'Keynote' to be default program and change all for .ppt files. But everytime I download a new file .ppt format, Windows Powerpoint opens. Same is the issue with quicktime files, I set VLC as default but quicktime always opens up.
Are there any other ways to set default programs of your wish to open certain files?
    Thanks,
    Arun

Use APPLE+I on a file of the type in Finder (Get Info). Toward the bottom of the information panel for the file, you will see an OPEN WITH section. Expand it if nessasary, select the application you want to open files of that type with, then click the "Change all..." button.

  • Cannot change the default program to open a specific file type.

Whenever I attempt to change the default program to open a file, it automatically reverts to whatever was selected previously.
I work with a lot of .ai files and my default Illustrator version is set to Creative Cloud. CC crashes constatnly on my machine, however CS6 runs smooth as silk. I'd like to be able to double click an .ai file and have it open in CS6, not CC. When I right click > Get Info > Open with and change it, it reverts as soon as I click "Change all..."
This isn't a huge deal... only takes a few seconds out of my day but it isn't something I should have to worry about.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I just successfully changed on my .docx to open into Pages. I went the same route that you mentioned... Right click---> Get Info---> Open With and changed it to Pages. When I clicked Change All, a dialog came up asking me if I am sure that I want to change all of my .docx to open in Pages. I click accept and tested it. Now my .docx open in Pages.
So my question is, is your issue just applying to .ai files? Or is affecting other files, such as .docx? If it's just affecting .ai files, then there maybe an underlying reason for that. And it may not be able to be changed.
    Just a thought.

  • How do I change the default program to open Pages docs to the old (4.3) version instead of the new one (5.0)?

How do I change the default program to open Pages docs to the old (4.3) version instead of the new one (5.0)? When I do what Apple said and go to a Pages file in finder and select "get info" then select "Pages 4.3" and "change all" it just defaults to the new one even though I'd selected the old one. Do I need to completely uninstall the new version of Pages or is there another work around because the new version of Pages comes dreadfully short of the features I need that are included in the old one?

    Eric Kraft wrote:
HOWEVER, if you modified a document in 5.0, 4.3 can't open it. You'll have to use Time Machine to replace the modified version with an earlier version that was last modified in 4.3.
    Actually there is a workaround.
If you open the file in Pages 5, it can then be exported on Pages 0.9 format to another folder. I had to do this as the document was only in iCloud and couldn't be recoverd by Time Machine.
    Worked for me!

  • Unable to set default program for .pdf

    CURRENT PROBLEM:
As show in print screen, when i attempt to set default program nth happens at all. The only way i can open any .pdf file now is by 1st opening adobe reader 9 and select the .pdf file manually
    INITIAL STAGE OF PROBLEM:
Problem started after upgrading to windows 7 from vista. Windows 7 is able to recognise adobe reader 8 as a valid default program since it is in windows.old. Thus the default for .pdf is adobe reader 8 (it was installed in vista).
Subsequently, installing adobe reader 9 isof  no use as it will be ignored and windows 7 will only continue to use adobe reader 8 as the default reader when i try to open a .pdf file, unless if i manually opened adobe reader 9 and selected a .pdf file manaually
However, I am unable to uninstall adobe reader 8 as the "program and feature" can only identify adobe reader 9 and does not think that adobe reader 8 exists.
    ATTEMPTs TO SOLVE:
Thus, I removed windows.old by using the disk cleanup. However, I am still unable to set adobe reader 9 as the default reader. Instead, .pdf are no longer accessible/"open-able" unless I 1st opened adobe reader 9 and then selected a .pdf manaually.
I've attempted reinstalling and restarting comps etc, they dun seem to help. I suspect the OS is now only able to recognise adobe reader 8 from windows.old as a valid program directory due to some registry issues since it was initally set as the default when i 1st upgraded the OS. Now that adobe reader 8 is removed, there might be some corrupted registry somewhere that needs to be set right again?
Really need help with this. Thanks a million.

Thanks guys for showing interest in helping.
As you guys can see, there's no adobe reader when u expand. Also, I already browsed the reader just in case too. Thus expanding doesnt help. =(
Also, I cant seem to find the "file type" tab in folder options

  • Change the default program to open a document?

    Howdy,
Is there anyway to change the default program to open a .doc file?

I can't seem to find a post with a solution to this problem. I guess I'm not figuring out the correct search term(s) to use.
Could be launch services is corrupt and needs to be rebuilt. The usual symptom is double entries in the right context "open with" menu, not the inability to change the default application, but it might be it. Open the Terminal application and copy/paste one of the following commands into it and hit return.  I think the first one is the one you want; the second may be for Lion/Mtn Lion.
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
You might also try repairing permissions in Disk Utility

  • Changing the default program for a file format

I was folloing the steps to change the default program to open a PDF, by going to Get Info > Open width > Adobe Acrobat and pressed Change All. All the PDF got changed to open with Acrobat Reader, but the next time, after I boot up the computer everything is back as it was, PDF files are opening with Preview and not Acrobat...
How to change it for once and for all?
    Thanks

I been working hours on the same problem as lessismo.  I've deleted every Adobe file and folder in the user's library, deleted preferences, etc. and can't seem to find a solution.  It works fine when I login as a different user so I know it's not the machine.  Any suggestions?

  • Cannot set default programs for a file extension in Gnome

After a gnome upgrade (cannot remember when), I can no longer set the default program for a particular file extension by right clicking the file in nautilus -> going to "properties" -> going to "open with" tab -> highlighting a program -> pressing "set as default".

The program I was trying to set was totem for default video playback; wine had made windows media player the default player prior. Interestingly, once I installed gnome-mplayer; the default program changed to gnome-mplayer and I was then able to switch default programs. This error may be related to wine.

  • How do I set default programs in OS 10.7.5?

Trying to point appropriate files to PS CC, i.e., Photomatix is opening in PS6.
I note from product notes below this screen that the system thinks I'm on 10.6.8.  So who knows... About Mac shows 10.7.5.

Yes, that would work Felix... thank you.  I was hoping to open the tonemapped file from with Photomatix directly into PS CC without having to go to the folder/file.  Seems to me that OS X (Mac), has a default program setting that should direct the file to your preferred program when you save it in Photomatix.  Right now, that's working but set to PS6.  I just need to know how to change the perferred program???

  • How do you globally change the default program for opening photo files?

I want to adjust my system so that when I double click a photo file, Preview does not automatically launch.  I work in Photoshop all the time and would prefer that it be the default program for pictures.  I have already changed the "when you insert a picture CD" command in CD's & DVD's in System preferences but this does not have any effect on when I double click on a picture file to open it; Preview always launches and opens the picture there.  That automatic opening behavior is fine but I need it to happen in Photoshop.

Assuming your pictures are all .jpg files: select any .jpg by clicking once on it in the Finder, then press Command+I to Get Info about it. In the Open With: section of the Get Info window, change the preferred application from Preview to Photoshop, then click the Change All button.
Now any .jpg file that you double-click will open in Photoshop.
