OS X 10.5.4 & Airport Extreme 7.3.2 Printing Problem

I recently purchased my first Mac. I'm a long time PC user and experience software developer. I'd heard of the ease of Mac and finally took the leap. I have to admit, except for printing, this OS and system is fantastic.
Now to my problem. I have a Powerbook Pro running OS X 10.5.4. I also have a new Airport Extreme running firmware 7.3.2. The wireless works great. The printer setup not so great. The printer is an Epson CX6000. The printer works fine when connected directly to the Powerbook's USB port.
When I connect the printer to the Airport Extreme it was immediately recognized and set up. I can see the printer attached in the Airport software and in Print & Fax in the System Preferences folder. When I actually print something nothing happens. The print queue doesn't show any pending jobs nor shows any errors.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I'm desperate. I want to keep the Airport Extreme but may be forced to get something else if I can't get this to work.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this is any help: I have an Epson DX8400 which worked fine via USB (once I had the latest driver & not the one on the CD in the box!!) with my MacBook, but I now discover from Epson that if I want to be able to print wirelessly via Time Capsule (which I already have, 500GB flavour, to enable Time Machine backups) which I want to be able to do as I intend to buy a MacPro for my home office & share the printer, I will need to get an Epson print server (about £150±) which is an expense I wasn't expecting & there is no guarantee it will be compatible with TC: I think I will need to post my own question, probably to both the printing & TC forums to check this out. Grrr!

OK. The 6.0 version no longer has a printer configuration that I could find. You might try Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
I would also check the printer's user manual for help with the setup, and that failing check the manufacturer's website and/or tech support.

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....
    1) Connect the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Download and install Bonjour Print Services for Windows on the PC

  • I have an airport extreme with a USB printer attached (non-airprint).  Can i print from my ipad?

I have an airport extreme with a USB printer attached, it is a non airprint printer.
I can print via my network from my desktop but I want to know if i can print from my ipad 2 and ipad 1

Printing from an iPad or iPhone
To print directly from an iPad you need an AirPrint - enabled printer on the same wireless network as the iPad. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are AirPrint-enabled.
If you do not have an AirPrint printer, a number of workarounds exist that enable the use of any printer you normally use, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades. Search for the following products:
    handyPrint (Mac only, donation-supported)
Printopia (Mac only, $19.95 with free trial)
These are utilities you install on the Mac you normally use for printing, enabling it to act as an AirPrint print server. The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. The iPad needs nothing else, no iOS apps need to be installed and no configuration is necessary. If your computer can print, so can the iPad, using one of these utilities on your Mac.
Equivalent utilities may exist for PCs but I have no experience with them - I suggest https://www.collobos.com
You can also buy this standalone hardware print server, bypassing the need for a computer altogether:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • I have a Airport Extreme. USB from printer to the router.  How do I turn on AirPrint so I can print from my iPad too?

I have a brand new iMac.  I also have a brand new Airport Extreme.  I have a cannon MG6320.  I have the printer contected to the Airport Extreme.  It works fine from my iMac.  But I do not know how to setup Airprint, so I can also print from my iPad 2 (original iPad 2, not the new iPad 2). Should I call cannon for assistance?

Setup AirPrint Printer (you do not connect to router)
    1. Buy an AirPrint enabled printer; see list below
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
    2. Run the CD provided and set printer and iPad on the same network
    3. Start printing from your iPad using AirPrint
Note: Make sure you have the latest firmware on printer

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

  • Is there any way to print wirelessly using Airport Extreme with an older printer (HP Laserjet 2100 TN) - no USB connection.

I have an older printer and currently use a Cisco wireless router with Network Magic software which allows me to leave my 30 pin printer connected to the desktop computer and share the printer with everything on the network. Does the Airport Extreme allow for this? I am just connecting one that I purchased but can only find documentation on connecting the printer via USB (which my old printer does not have). The printer is late 90's vintage, but its comercial grade and is still one of the best printers I have used so I want to keep it going for now.

I don't really know much about anything BUT with that said, I have PCs, I have an old commerical work horse HP laser printer that works with the Airport Express as a print server through my wireless router.  But having problems with my wireless router, never my AE, now how to change from WEP to WPA etc.for a new wireless router.  Maybe I need to look into the Extreme.  Good luck

  • I have read all of the similar issues on this site and I still cannot connect my airport extreme (although there is no problem with my old airport express - help...

i have read all of the numerous and similar issues on this subject.  and i still cannot connect my new airport extreme.  my old airport express works fine still.  help.  and why are there so many issues with connecting this stuff?  i thought this stuff was supposed to be getting easier, not harder... thanks.

Sorry, but I have no idea on what you have read and tried so far so please forgive me for any redundancy.
Is your AirPort Extreme the only router in your current network configuration? Which exact model is it? If there are other routers being used, please provide their make(s) & model(s). Also the make & model of your Internet modem.
What is your goal with the Extreme? Is it to replace the "old" AirPort Express? Will you still be using the Express for any reason(s)?

  • Airport Extreme 7.1 Firmware Upgrade - problems with Airdisk

I recently upgraded the Airport Extreme firmware from 7.0 to 7.1 but have experienced several problems.
After the initial upgrade, I encountered a double NAT warning, which was fixed by switching into Bridge mode, followed by an invalid IP address warning. I rebooted the AE and the warning disappeared.
Connecting to the wireless network is ok, except that it can never remember my connection (which is a closed WPA2 Personal network) and I have to manually re-connect every time I switch on the nac - with my previous Airport Express this would remember the network and re-connected automatically.
Worst of all however is that I can no longer see my AirDisk - a LaCie 500 GB USB HD connected to the AE.
The disk name is simply upper case ASCII and so I cannot understand why this is occurring. It worked perfectly using version 7.0. Has anyone else had these problems or aware of a workaround?

The 7.1 update has caused problems for many many people.
What I did to solve problems was to revert back to 7.0. here's a link to a post I made over at jmacrumors.com explaining how to do it:

  • Using an X-Modem M3 with an Airport Extreme and having iChat video problems

    Hi,
I have been posting on the iChat section over the last week or so regarding a big problem I have with iChat4 Video. I have been getting some great help over there, but it has been mentioned to me that I may be able to pick up some help in this Topic regarding any more detailed known issues on the X-modem M3 or Airport Extreme.
I am still very new to this Discussion board use, so I hope it's ok to jump in like this and post a link to my ongoing discussion in iChat. See below.....
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1323485&tstart=0
I didn't want to copy all of my message again into here as I thought it best that if you can help you could use the link.
If anyone can help throw some light on this, then many thanks.

The X-Modem in the default modem mode has no influence over the data being transferred. It is a modem not a router so it does not block any communication ports. Your iChat problems must be either on the Airport or the computer.
Seeing as how iChat works fine when the modem is connected to the computer via Ethernet it shows that the modem is working fine and that your ISP doesn't seem to be doing any blocking that would prevent iChat from working.
It really looks like the Airport Extreme is the culprit, perhaps the firewall on the computer is not properly allowing iChat to tell the Airport what ports it should open. Have you tried switching the firewall off completely at both ends ? Seeing as how the computers are behind Airports there is no need to worry about turning the firewall off for testing.

  • Frequent restart of AIRPORT EXTREME necessary for USB printing

My AIRPORT EXTREME needs to be restarted about once every week through the AIRPORT UTILITY software in order to get the connected USB printer (Brother HL-1450) working.
The AIRPORT is powered 24h a day and connects to the internet flawlessly but the printer dissappears from the "bonjour" printer list frequently.
    Anyone having an idea?
    (latest AIRPORT software V5.7 installed)
    powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hello jlford30. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You may already have everything set up properly...
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations.
Take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
    - 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
    - 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also, you may find the following Apple article helpful.

  • My iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, although it will print if connected via USB. Meanwhile, my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) prints still prints wirelessly. Please help.

May iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, though my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) continues to function just fine). The iMac will print if it is connected to the printer directly via USB. The iMac continues to connect to the Internet wirelessly. I've tried resetting the printer and ensuring the driver is up to date, but no joy.
    Any suggestions?

  • Airport Extreme and USB Hub + Printer and Hard Drives

I have been using my Airport Extreme with a USB hub with 2 external hard drives and one printer for a while now and everything has been going fine. However, recently, the hard drives have stopped registering when I have the USB hub plugged in. I have plugged the hub directly into my computer with everything attached and it works fine but the moment I plug the hub into the Airport, nothing shows up except that the printer still works.
Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks!

Hi, I've had this same problem now for more than 1 year, and nothing had solved it, until recently. I think I know what the problem is.
It turns out that not all USB 2.0 hard drive enclosures are the same. I had been using "Metalgear Substance II" enclosures for my 500-GB drives, and I had assumed all along that these were fine... I had assumed that one USB 2.0 enclosure was as good as the next USB 2.0 enclosure. WRONG!!!
By accident, I noticed that the drive-to-drive copy times from MetalGear USB 2.0 boxes was about 22 hours for a full 450-GByte transfer of information, while placing the SAME drive into a MacAlley enclosure reduced the copy time down from 22 hours to 6 hours... About 3.5 times faster!!! This means that the piece of crud Metalgear boxes I had been using for my network drives were ssssllllooowwww.
A big bright light blinked on in my head regarding my issues and problems with the Apple Airport Extreme Base-station and all of the problems I'd had with multiple drives, the AEBS locking up etc.. All of my issues had been associated with using the el-cheapo Metalgear enclosures.
As soon as I replaced the Metalgear USB boxes with MacAlley boxes, everything started to work great. No more issues with my Airport locking up. None. Problem fixed. Problem solved.
I can only assume that NOT ALL USB 2.0 BOXES ARE THE SAME. USB 2.0 does not mean that the transfer rates will actually be at 480-mbps. Quality matters. DO NOT USE METALGEAR BOXES WITH APPLE EXTREME. There may be other brands with suck just as much. I can vouch for the MacAlley boxes. They work great... and there may be other boxes that work too. There must be some issue with Apple Airport Base Station timing out on slower USB 2.0 crapola equipment... something that causes it to hang.
Anyway, I hope this helps. My problems are solved since going to the MacAlley enclosures.
