OS X 10.5.7 and ATV 2.3.1

Each time I upgrade my ATV to 2.3.1 after doing a factory restore, it seems that the ATV will disappear from the device list... Weird, but as long as I leave it 2.0.2 the ATV seems to be working fine. Any ideas in this issue. Thanks in advance.

Take a look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2007147
(not any workarounds there... but a lot of buddies with the same problem... let this thread grow to give Apple the suggestion to change things quickly)

  • Get a Samsung HDTV and ATV or wait for the latest model?

A newbie to HDTV, video and ATV.
I have almost decided to buy the Samsung 50" plasma HDTV PN50A650. But have discovered that Samsung has a new model PN50A760 with added capabilities for playing video and wireless networking.
Connectivity is an issue to me. Spending all the green on a HDTV, I do not want it to be obsolete in 4 years. What if I get a digital camcorder? Or Apple introduces a flat-rate movie-rental scheme? My options:
OPTION A) Wait a few months until the $500 premium for the new model drops.
Some excerpts for reviews of the latest 760 model:
"The 7 series can playback video content stored on a USB device while the 6 series are limited to images and audio."
(Naively, I thought that all HDTVs should be able to play back video.)
"The 7 Series can stream audio, video and pictures over your home network."
"The TV recognizes not only MP3 and JPEG files but also XviD and MPEG4 files to enjoy video playback."
"The TV can also reach out to your home network and play back photos, videos and music stored on networked computers. You'll need to install special software, included with the TV, onto your PC." This could be some very basic software. Suitable for Macs?
"While this feature seems pretty cool, it's not as good as similar functionality built into a PS3 or an Xbox 360, let alone that of a dedicated network media streamer like Apple TV. Despite being billed as DLNA-compliant, the TV won't play nice with DLNA server software like Windows Media Player 11 or TVersity, so you're stuck with the included proprietary software. Samsung's software is basic..." (Compatibility with Macs?)
OPTION B) Buy the older model and then, add ATV. The total cost will be less and I think, the video playback (through my iMac?) and networking capabilities (2Wire Wi-Fi) will be much better. But I see there have been problems between ATV and Samsung HDTV.
Isn't the combo with ATV a much more capable and flexible (and cheaper) long-term solution? Which Samsung is unlikely to match?
Thanks for your valuable advice! (Urgent for the X-Mas season!)

Winston, I think you're missing my points:
    1) If you're interested in a device for watching HD video, then you can compare the AppleTV and Blu-Ray. You then have to look at what other features they provide, or don't provide as the case may be, and decide. I was just giving my opinion on an alternative.
    2) There was no detailed information given as to what the streaming capabilities were and so I was giving my opinion again.
To say that there is little difference quality wise between current HD broadcasts (even if some are 1440x1080i) and the maximum output of the AppleTV at 1280x720 shows a total lack of experience on your part of watching HD broadcasts on a TV capable of 1920x1080, or a lack of appreciation of the better detail contained in the picture. It's like comparing AppleTV HD at 1280x720 with DVD PAL native resolution of 720x576 and saying there is little difference quality wise. But then if you look at the US market where 30fps is standard, the AppleTV cannot support resolutions higher than 960x540, and then you really are lowering the benefits of the AppleTV over DVD quality, and the difference between the AppleTV and HD broadcasts is even bigger.
I have compared video from HD broadcast at 1920x1080 with the same video converted down to 1280x720 on the AppleTV, and the loss of detail is noticeable, especially when watching on a 40" TV, not an uncommon size these days with them being used with games consoles. Before you comment, no it is nothing to do with how I convert them, there is just physically far fewer pixels available. I much prefer watching 1920x1080 through my Media PC than watching 1280x720 through my AppleTV.
Also, as we all know it happens, there is software available freely on the internet - no names will be mentioned - that allow the convertion of movies from DVD to a PC, and likewise from HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to a PC. So reality is that it's available now and with the cost of 1TB and 1.5TB HDDs so cheap, the potential for a 1920x1080 resolution video collection for playing on a 1920x1080 TV is already there. Saying it's not going to happen 'any time soon' is rediculous as it's already happening, albeit quietly, especially as talk of how to do such things is not allowed on this forum.
You keep using this phrase 'any time soon' without quantifying it. You use words like 'unlikely'. We live in a fast changing world. The world of televisions has changed dramatically in the last two years, whereby nearly all mid-priced TVs (both plasma and lcd) from about £800 GBP upwards now support native 1920x1080. Two years ago I paid over £1500 GBP for a 37" plasma supporting native 1024x720. You can now buy Sony OLED 11" TVs, which a couple of years ago were just being shown off as prototypes. In my opinion, OLED will blow away lcd and plasma tv sales within 5 years, and in my timescale, that is any time soon.
12 months ago I bought a blu-ray player for a PC, whilst people around me were going for hd-dvd. The format wars was predicted as not going to end 'any time soon' and no one could have forseen that within 6 months the whole blu-ray / hd-dvd argument would be over.
For your information, ABC in the US have been broadcasting in HD for over 10 years.
But as I keep saying Winston, these are my opinions. You're allowed yours and I'm allowed mine.

  • I lose my internet connection when i sync iTunes and ATV. Please help

Ive just bought a new Apple TV and I am trying to stream TV shows and movies from my iMac via the wireless network.
The ATV found the right network instantly and I wrote in the password. Ive paired the iMac iTunes and ATV and I can see all the episodes and movies on my TV.
When I want to start to watch any of it, it loses its connection to the router/network. And so does the iMac. I havent had any trouble with the iMacs connection to the network until now. If Im not trying to watch anything on my TV, the internet is fine on both the ATV and iTunes.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Ive tried to fix the DHCP in my router settings, but im not even sure what that means, let alone if it helps When i lose the internet, I can still see the network name, but when I try to connect, it says that connection timeout.
    I have a D-Link DI 524 router.
    Thanks so much
    Lisa
EDIT: If I exit iTunes my internet connection is fine. As soon as I start it and iTunes starts to sync with ATV, I lose the internet. Anyone know why and how I can fix it?
I forgot to add that WAN settings in my router says that I have Dynamic IP Address.
    Thanks

Okay.. When i stop the syncing between the ATV and itunes, I can watch a movie/TV-show for about 30 seconds, then the network will timeout.
So i know the atv is working. I have a feeling its the router that is too old? I will try to upgrade its firmware tomorrow, as i was told i couldnt to this when connected to wireless?

  • How to use Airplay with AE and ATV with no internet connection?

I am currently at a resort that only has the AT&T Wi-fi.  Unelss someone knows how to hook an AppleTV into an AT&T network and get past their acceptance of terms screen I need to figure out how to get this to to work.
I have an airport Express set up as it's own network.  I had the Apple TV join that netowork as well as my iPad.  When I start to play a movie the Airplay icon comes up and I tell it to use the AppleTV.  On the TV a notification comes up in the corner that has the movie name but then that's it.  It never plays. The AE was unhappy about not having an internet connection but I told it to ignore not having one and it turned green.
As far as I can tell I should in theory be able to have the AE be it's own network without internet and use Airplay between my iPad and the ATV.  It's just a no go and I can't tell why.
Thoughts?  Settings I may not be aware of? I can't figure it out.

AirPlay is only compatible with AirPort base stations.
The dongle is not compatible with AirPlay.

  • Remote app and ATV (shortcut to STANDBY)

It would be nice if the Remote app had a direct "STANDBY" button you could hit no matter where you are in the menu structure and your ATV will enter into standby mode.
Unfortunately there's not. So you have to turn on your TV, step through the menus or you could of course "do it in the dark" (hitting MENU several times, scroll right, scroll all the way down and then hit ENTER (hoping that you are at the right menu).
Does anybody know of a shortcut to have your ATV enter standby mode?

That's true, provided that you use the Apple Remote that comes with ATV, but I'm using the Remote app on my Touch and there it doesn't work (holding the menu key and play/pause).
As to WHY? I just like have my gear turned off/standby, that's all. I haven't measured the power usage in standby/powered on mode.
An extra function in the "MORE" selection in the Remote app called "STANDBY" would do the trick.

  • Storing video on Time capsule and ATV and not on computer

I would like to build my video library and not store it on my IMAC 24 When I back it up and delete it I also loose it from ATV Then I have to restore to watch it Is there any way around this So much storage on the ATV and Time Capsule Why use the computer memory

I previously had my iTunes library on a network drive but moved to it an external drive connected directly to my iMac because streaming and file downloads were slower on the network drive due to the iTune's content management scheme. The short answer is, it will work regardless of whether or not you keep your library on your Time Capsule, your iMac or an external drive.

  • HDMI and ATV Venting

    I just want to vent.
Last night we rented a movie, the movie started and just got a white screen. Turned off receiver and back on still white screen. Rebooting ATV DID resolve the problem.
I just want to say I am getting tired of continually rebooting my ATV. I have to do this quite often now that I am just going HDMI through my receiver (which is a decent quality Denon). I mostly have issues where there is no sound and the only solution is rebooting ATV. Now this white screen last night. Ugh. Just work!
I don't have any more Toslink inputs on my receiver otherwise I would use that setup as I did on my older receiver which didn't have any HDMI. I am using a decent HDMI cable to boot plus just recently reset my ATV and reloaded all updates hoping that would fix the problem.
I really hope Apple is coming out with something new...especially now that Hulu offers Hulu Plus...maybe there is still hope. Only need Pandora now...please migrate ATV to IOS.
By the way, I have had my ATV since software version 1 and Yes I have posted my frustrations through the Feedback section of Apple.com.
    Thanks for listening.

  • File .dv and aTV in streaming

    Hi everybody.
I edit my domestic films with FCExpress HD, and make a .dv file, I have QT 7.2, and try see the films in aTV by streaming. This I do open dv file in QT and export to appleTV it's create a m4v file, I put it on iTunes, see it LCD Sony TV, but..... hang the video each 10 seconds the streaming don't work. It is impossible se mine family records.
I have a MBP 17", 2.33 Mhz, 2 Gb RAM, and Airport Extreme
    What are doing wrong ??
Original file is .dv (FCE) and end file is .m4v (QT). I try too with VisualHub and same results, bad. Size 4:3 PAL
    THX in advance

Does the file play back fine in iTunes?
Sync the problem file to test if it plays ok from the hard drive.
AppleTV is fussy about the movie format, and you ideally need either h.264 or mpeg-4 file as follows:
    =========================================================
    Video formats supported
    * H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    * iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels or 640 by 480 pixels
    * MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    Audio formats supported
    * AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV
    ==========================================================
It might be that your converted file is close to these specs but just a bit too high a bitrate for streaming to work ok - what are the encoded m4v file bitrates and other parameters?

  • Recorded HDTV and ATV question.

    Hi
I am going through the PVR purchase research and am interested in recording free to air digital tv to then stream to the tv via ATV.
If I were to use an EyeTv type receiver to record to the computer, does it need to be converted to another format before the ATV can use it?
Also, the digital receivers claim to need either dual G5 or intel processors to access 720p (the format of my tv) or 1080i/p. Is this only for watching the broadcast live or will I be able to record this quality and watch the HD content later using my single 1.8GHz 2 GB ram G5?
Are there any tuners for that matter that my set up can use and utilise the 720p format?
    Thanks in advance

ATV requires MP4 format. When user records from a set top box the file is .m2t
    Example, what I do:
Record a "copt freely" movie to the Comcast set top box. Once done I play it back and use AVCBrowser (taken from Apple SKD and free) to capture that movie. It is in .m2t format. Then I'd use either Handbrake, VisualHub or MPEGStreamClip to convert for ipod or ATV in MP4 format.
I never used Eyetv because I did all the above for zero cost except for time.

  • Dial Up and ATV V2.0

I am lucky enough to live in an area with no broadband connectivity so i have to suffer 44kbps max. My ATV can connect to the internet on this but i would like to know how long it would take to download V2.0 and is it worth it???

Personally I wouldn't bother if I were you.
The iTunes store is a huge part of the new interface (and for that reason I don't like it) and I think for those features just downloading icons for albums/tv shows will slow your AppleTV down to a snail's pace. There's nothing we can't buy in the UK via iTunes on AppleTv, unlike the US where movie rentals are available and HD movies can only be downloaded via AppleTV - don't even contemplate anything other than songs with dial-up.
Are you running AppleTV 1.0 or 1.1? If you're on 1.1 but originally had 1.0, you can revert to 1.0 from 2.0 (or from 1.1) but there's no way of going back to 1.1 (which introduced YouTube to AppleTV) from 2.0 (unless the machine came with 1.1).
Several users have noticed less responsive performace with AppleTV2.0, most have few issues.
The only current benefits for upgrading in the UK are:
    - dolby digital 5.1 passthrough which will be of use if you encode your own purchased movies using a particular application and also have AppleTV hooked up to a 5.1 amp/receiver - if listening in stereo or through a basic TV there will be no benefit to you.
    - AirTunes - AppleTV can now be made to playback the music being played on your computer in iTunes - music is relayed to it rather than AppleTV pulling the content across
    - direct music/TV Show purchase from AppleTv - this will be a chore with dial-up
    - .Mac and Flickr photo display - again internet heavy usage so quicker to sync/stream photos from the computer

  • AirPlay not working between iPad/iPhone and ATV

I live in an apartment with communal wifi and I'm unable to use AirPlay between my iPad and iPhone and my ATV. When I go to AirPlay on either device I'm able to see neighbors' ATVs; however, my own ATV is not listed. All three devices are connected to the same network. Any idea how I can make my ATV available? Thank you!

Welcome to the Apple Community Chicago Bandit.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • AirPlay List Refreshing Constantly iOS8 - EDU Multiple iPads and ATVs

We are seeing a huge problem with many iPads which have updated to iOS8.  We are a school district with 70+ Apple TVs on the network and when a teacher goes to connect to their Apple TV by swiping from the bottom then selecting AirPlay, they get a list showing 1 or sometimes slightly more rows which starts to repeatedly refresh thus making it unusable.  Every now and then it will stay stable enough where the ATV you need will stay on the list long enough to select it and mirror, but that is only if you are lucky.  This issue has made our Apple TVs for at least 10 teachers (others have avoided iOS8) unusable and quite a problem for the IT department.  Is there any fix for this?  Will an update be fixing this soon??

I join you in my disappointment. A few years ago I would always warn myself that Apple is a home-user-focused company and efforts to make an enterprise solution out of products intended to sit in a living room might have problems, but over the last couple of years Apple has strongly touted themselves as an EDU solution without drastically changing the functionality of their products.  With each release of a new iOS I see features listed for EDU that never actually function properly or no one working at Apple has ever heard of (or knows how to use) and it makes me wonder when we will actually get the engineering support to make these devices work in a school environment. I know this is a slightly off-topic rant, but the Apple TV is just one of several EDU solutions that is supposed to "magically" work and yet it has been inconsistent at best and now is almost nonfunctional.  I have never been able to fully embrace Apple as a long-term solution because of issues like this and I am getting tired of putting so much money and energy into something that makes technical support so difficult for those deploying it.

  • Why am I having trouble keeping my itunes and ATV synced?

After syncing my Itunes with Apple TV, everything, movies, music, photos, etc. shows up on my apple tv under My Movies, etc. First question is, Are my movies, etc, now on the hard drive of the apple TV? Next question, With the material on the hard drive of the ATV, do I need to have my MacBook open for syncing. What is happening is after I sync, and close my MacBook, when I go to my movies, ATV tell me I have no movies. Once I open the MacBook and go to Itunes, it syncs up again and my movies are there. Am I wrong in thinking once I have synced and the movies, music, photos should be ready to pull without my MacBook on or open.
If I take my MacBook to work, and my wife wants to watch something, how do I keep everything loaded on the ATV hard drive.
    Any help is appricated, Thanks

It sounds like you have your ATV set to "stream" from you Macbook instead of sync. Check the settings (On the ATV) and make sure (If the Macbook is synced, it will show a chainlink icon.).
Once you have the ATV synced, your music, movies etc. are saved on its harddrive. Thereafter, the Macbook only needs to be on when you want to add new material.
