OS X 10.5.8 Aluminum/Numeric keyboard

Hi,
I have 10.5.8. I bought the new numeric keyboard. and F7-F12 are dead. I downloaded Spark, but can't find a shortcut script to use. I only want volume. Can anyone help? Do I have to upgrade?
Thanks,
Sean

I think the KB issue is quite silly on Apple's part, but...
I think Spark cured this for another person and the same problem...

  • My Aluminum Wireless Keyboard Thinks it's a Mouse!

    I'm having troubles with my aluminum wireless keyboard. When I first got it I paired it with my MacPro1,1 and it worked great for a couple of months, then it all of a sudden stopped working (no, I didn't drop it). I went back to using my old white/clear wireless keyboard and that one works perfectly.
    I have tried pairing the aluminum keyboard numerous times to no avail. I will explain to you what happens. After deleting the keyboard from bluetooth, I pair it again. The aluminum keyboard appears on the list and I click it to pair it. It asks me to type in a code, which I do (from the aluminum board, not the white one). I hit return and wait a few seconds and it tells me pairing was successful.
    When I go to use the newly paired keyboard, it will not type. What I DO get is mouse curser movement from various keys. Holding down the letter "O" moves the curser to the right, "U" moves it left, "8" moves it up, and so-forth.
    I took the keyboard in to the Apple store to get an exchange. They tested it and showed me how it works perfectly on their computers. They suggested I update my OS to the latest version along with all related firmware and try it again. So, I just installed snow leopard 10.6.1, and tried repeatedly to pair the keyboard again to no avail. It is still doing the exact same thing! I am running the latest wireless keyboard firmware, it has new batteries, I removed and replaced the batteries several times and it just does not help. I am stumped!
    I love my aluminum keyboard and desperately want to use it. Any ideas on how I might correct this problem? Thanks for your time!

    Hiya opalmic,
    have you tried a PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    and secondly, do you need to install a bluetooth firmware update 2.0.1? :
    http://www.apple.com/support/bluetooth/
    finally, you could open up keychain first aid and repair it.
    Please advise if that resolves your problems?

  • Aluminum bluetooth keyboard problem

    I have an apple aluminum bluetooth keyboard. It is one of the older models that requires 3 batteries. It has had very little use. I am going on a trip and decided to take it and the green light comes on, but won't blink for pairing with my new MBP. I have tried numerous sets of new batteries. The light will come on when depressed, but then goes out and won't blink, so the pairing can't take place. The pairing will start, but then the light goes out right away and won't blink. It doesn't matter whether I turn it on with a short or prolonged press on the on button.
    Any ideas?

    No Luck. Deleted the old one. The keyboard will pair with another Mac...but hangs with this one. The computer sees it, attempts to pair with it, and then says that the pairing was unsuccessful - without even giving me a chance to enter the numbers that one normally does. It just says, "The pairing was unsuccessful. Make sure you device is in range of this computer, turned on and "discoverable." When ready, click Continue and try again."

  • Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard: Special Keys Don't Work

    The keyboard has function keys that are programmed to perform special operations. The Apple website explicitly states:
    “The extended layout has a full complement of keys, including document navigation controls, a numeric keypad, and special function keys for Mac features such as brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, Exposé, and more.”
    Unfortunately, two of these keys don’t work, even after a special software update is installed:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/keyboardsoftwareupdate11.html
    The manual that comes with the keyboard provides instructions on how to program the keyboard, but those instructions either don’t work or are incorrect.
    I've posted more about this and other keyboard issues here:
    http://web.mac.com/resourcesforlife/journal/writings/Entries/2007/8/21Apple_Aluminum_WiredKeyboard.html

    I am using a PowerMac Dual 2.5 GHz G5 system and had trouble with the F3 and F4 function keys. The various suggestions and instructions as provided on several of the discussion threads didn't work for me.
    Here's what worked for me to resolve the problem:
    1. Go here and download the Pacifist utility which helps in exploring installation packages:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
    2. Go here and download the Apple OSX update for PowerPC:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html
    OR... get the version for Intel found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
    3. Using the Pacifist utility, open the OSX Update dmg file you just downloaded. You will be able to navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click the install button. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace. There is an option to repeat this response for all files. Complete the process and then exit the Pacifist utility program.
    4. Go here and download the Apple Keyboard Software Update:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html
    5. Install the Keyboard update and all functions should automatically work.
    If the above steps resolve the problem for you, please click on the "Solved" button above. Thanks.
    I've posted a lengthy review and support document for the new Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard here:

  • Brand New MacB Air and i haven't been able to get passed the format which has had to be done twice because, I have a French Numeric Keyboard and Language in English.  The minute I type in my password, the keyboard gives me letters that i did NOT type.

    I live in Switzerland and can only buy a Mac Air with a French or German keyboard, no chance to buy an English keyboard Mac here,.  When setting up  I chose the French numerique keyboard, although there are two choices French or French numerique.  I put in my language as English.  When all was set up I came to the start page and had to put in my password, by the grace of g....I just happened to see the first letter I typed before it turned into a dot.  My password which was supposed to start with the number 2 showed a french e with accent before it quikly became a dot.
      Because of the dot system, this meant that I had no clue what the keyboard was typing as my password ...........and true enough my password was not accepted despite my trying all combinations.  I have had to reformat twice now thanks to Apple Chat and both times my password was not accepted.  I am in the process of formatting it again, this time on my own.  If the Start page does not accept my password again this can only mean that the Mac left the factory with faults.  I could not be more disappointed with the money spent and the time and trouble that Apple Chat and I have spent in trying to correct a brand new out of the box Mac.  I have a cheap Toshiba laptop also with a french keyboard and english language which gave me no trouble at all.  I am not impressed with the so called King of computers!  First of all the dot system is daft.  People want to be able to see and confirm their passwords before they are set for good.  Second,  this problem is going to give me a lot of grief.  Switzerland business is not renowned for its after sales service or the time it takes to do repairs.  When I had an issue with my Vaio laptop which was still under warranty, they kindly picked it up from my house, repaired and promptly returned it.  How's that for good proper service.

    i didn't read a lot of your 2nd paragraph, but it seems like the password is the issue, right?
    do a true clean install
    reboot your machine and hold down command+option+r, you should see a spinning globe - if you don't see the globe or anything that reads internet recovery, shut down and try again
    at menu, chose disk utility and once there, find your HD on the left side, select the physical name and erase it as mac journaled
    exit disk utlity
    at menu, choose install OSX
    this time, when it asks for a password just hit continue, it will let you complete without a password
    you should be able to get into your laptop, now figure out what password you'll be able to use with your kb issue

  • Any way to get numlock/numeric keyboard overlay in W530?

    Hi all,
    Last week I got my new ThinkPad W530 as a replacement for my W500 that replaced my R60 that replaced my R51. One of the first things I noticed was the changes to the keyboard. I really like the feel of the keys, but I don't like the layout, I think the previous one was perfect :/
    Anyway, I'm not here to bash. I'm giving the new layout a chance, and maybe I'll get used to it and not want to go back in some months, let's see. But before I can do that, there is something I absolutely need. I use some software that needs a numpad and the new W530 keyboard doesn't seem to have the numeric keyboard overlay that the older models had.
    Is there anyway to get this or simulate it's behaviour? Anything, I don't care if it is a hidden Fn combination that will activate it, a third-party software to simulate it, a fan-made keyboard driver, or some fiddling with Windows options. But sure there MUST be some way, easy or difficult, to make they keyboard work as if it had NumLock and a numpad, right? I don't think I'm the only one needing this functionality...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I have the odd feeling you can write your own Autohotkey script that toggles a simulated overlay with a double-tap of the right Ctrl key.
    EDIT: And here it is:
    ~RControl::
    if (A_PriorHotkey <> "~RControl" or A_TimeSincePriorHotkey > 200)
    KeyWait, RControl
    return

    Are you able to use other startup keys, such as the C key to start up from your Mac OS X installation disc in the optical drive?
    Did you already try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    (and are those startup keys recognized?)
    and this procedure to reset SMC?

    I would like to open the numeric keyboard in a mobile Flash Builder 4.5 app when click on a text field instead of the full keyboard.  Is this possible?

    It looks like this is implemented in Flashbuilder 4.6 through the softKeyboardType command:

  • Apple aluminum (USB) keyboard is not working at all in Vista

    I just brought a apple aluminum (USB) keyboard. it works fine under Leopard. But when I plug it into Vista. Vista tells me keyboard driver install correctly, and device is working, but none of the keys on the USB keyboard is working. I mean not even "abc".

    As I installed Windows on my Mac, I was unable to use my wireless keyboard and mouse (which are the standards from Apple) when i was operating on the Windows partition. I had to call my buddy and use his keyboard and mouse, which were not wireless, and it worked fine. While in Windows, i did download Mac OS X, to make the two OS compatible, but the wireless still did not work on Windows. Is there something additional i need to do to allow my wireless keyboard and mouse to work on the Windows side of things. Please let me know if you have the answer

  • Numeric keyboard comma separator

    Hello iUsers,
    I am quite new in mac but this problem has appeared suddenly and I don't know if it is on my site or by something else. I've googled it and trying to find answer here but nothinkg helps. The problem has been already solved here before but this not helping me, sorry if I am disturbing...
    In every aplication, when I am trying to write "," on numeric keyboard, it writes "." which is super anoying especialy in OO.org calc or 3D app Rhino where I need to work with decimals. It is so anoying to go to the "," key on the alphabet section.
    I was trying to switch the Language&Text setting to US or custom but nothing helps, it put always dot.
    Please, please help. I was so ****** of by PCs for many years by such a stupid bugs and hoped that on macs this is solved.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Steffen,
    For that purpose you can write a simple batch file or a second application that calls your program with different command line arguments.
    Your main application can read the input parameters and you can code it to distinguish the program call reason (first time or second time).
    Another solution that comes to my mind is the atexit function.
    You can register your own application to start itself upon its exit. See the function help for details.
    I cannot try that right now but I'll be glad if you can try it and inform us of results.
    Hope this helps,

  • Numeric keyboard???

    Hi, I bought my Powerbook in France where to type numbers the LockShift-Key has to be "On" (as if they were capitals).
    When i first initialized the computer, I was given the option of a "regular" or "numeric" keyboard, and somehow my choice has caused me to have to always manually hold the "shift" key lock to be able to type numbers. If I just "Lock" the shift key, I get symbols but no numbers..
    Does anyone know how I can change these settings? I looked in the Keyboard section of System Preferences but no option was given. Preferably, I would be far rather not have to reinitialize my entire computer just to resolve this problem.
    Thanks for any help you can give me,
    korelice

    From the info you gave, seems like a bad keyboard.
    Just tried excel 2004.  Both sets of numbers results in numbers in excel.
    Need to verify that the numeric keypad works in other applications.
    Could be some keyboard remapping program intercepting & changing keys.
    This is an iMac.  Maybe OS got confused over what keyboard you have.
    You looked in system preferences on keyboard & mouse. There are two tabs on keyboard.  See applications keyboard preferences.
    perhaps a preference got messed up.
    So define a new user and see if problem occurs there.  System preferences > Users > + to add users
    check out.

  • GRRRR! How do you make a style shortcut w/o numeric keyboard

    This is seriously tedous. No way to create a keyboard shortcut for style sheets without a numeric keypad? If not, can anyone recommend a good wireless or wired keyboard with numeric keyboard. I use style sheets a lot and manually applying style in a directory is seriously tedious. Thanks.

    There is a way, and I maintain that once you learn it, it's as fast as numeric shortcut keys (and easier to remember). It's Quick Apply. Here's how:

  • Custom Number Format Default to Numeric Keyboard

    Hello,
    I recently put together a timesheet form for our superintendents.  I have some fields to accept our company's 6-digit cost codes.  Initially, I used the general  Number format.  This worked well since, on the iPad, the numeric keyboard came up by default and only numbers were accepted.  However, there was no limit to the number and it always removed the leading "0", which was not acceptable.  Our cost codes are layed out as follows:
    011010
    082010
    120010
    It was important that we retain the leading "0".  Then, after some research I found a code (entered into to Custom format) on this forum allowing me to retain that zero:
    event.rc = true;
    if (event.value) {
         if (/^\d{6}$/.test(event.value)==false) {
              app.alert("Error! The entered value must be 6 digits.");
              event.rc = false;
    This worked well... however, I am back to the numeric keyboard not being default and the field accepting letters as well as number.
    MY QUESTION:
    How do I create a numeric only, exactly 6-digit field that will open the numeric keyboard on the iPad (like the number field does).  Is this possible?

  • After my last OSX update: usb ports not working on my apple numeric keyboard

    I'm curious if anyone else has lost usb connectivity on a Apple numeric keyboard after the last OS X update. I get the error msg "USB device needs power, connect usb disk (jump drive) to power or a usb port on this Mac". I am using OS X 10.9.1 (13B42) and the last update I took was iMovie 10.0.2 on Jan 25, 2014 on an 27' iMac (late 2012) i7 3.4 GHz, 3TB fusion, 32Gb RAM, GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB video. All four usb ports are be used and are active on the back of the iMac. All I need is the occasional acess to a couple of jump drives via the keyboard ports. I have just ordered a 3.0 powered usb hub (Satechi) This will soon be a non-issue, but I know it used to work and I'm thinking that the OS X update might has done something to my keyboard ports. Anything?

    The keyboard ports are usually slower transfer rate than other ports, so would likely be unsuited for use with flash or USB storage. There is usually an upper limit to the system load of all the ports together, perhaps that load is near the maximum already, too.
    Hopefully the powered USB hub will resolve the issue.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Is it possible to lock the numeric keyboard on the iPad mini so that I do not have to go back to the regular keyboard every time I press the space button?

    Is it possible to lock the onscreen numeric keyboard on the iPad mini so that I do not have to go back to the regular keyboard every time I press the space button?

    Thanks so very much!! You ROCK! I took your second suggestion and went into the iPad settings menu and then into the app. From there I was able to mute the sound effects I wanted. Really appreciate your help.
