OS X 10.5.8 to upgrade to the newest OS X Lion....what do I do?

I'm having trouble upgrading my current OS X10.5.8 to the newest OS X Lion....there doesnt seem to be an operating system that will allow me to update to.

OS X Lion can only be downloaded from the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store can only be downloaded from a Mac running OS X 10.6.6 or later. 10.6.6 can only be updated if you are running Snow Leopard. So you have to buy a copy of Snow Leopard to get to Mac OS 10.6.6 to get the Mac App Store to get Lion.

    Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
    Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
    During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.
    OS numbers and names

    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
    OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard

    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A

  • I've just bought an new laptop and downloaded itunes. I plugged in my iphone and upgraded to the newest itunes/ synched etc. Now I have no music or apps on my phone. The contacts photos and texts all seem fine. Just the itues stuff that's missing.

I have just bought a new computer and downloaded itunes. I plugged in my iphone and upgraded to the newest itunes/ synched etc. Now have no music or apps on the phone. Contacts, texts, photos all fine. Just all itunes content that is missiing. It isn't showing in my itunes account on my computer or on my phone. Any idea how to get it back? (No point synching with itunes on my computer as it isn't there either!)

I suggest copying your entire iTunes library to your new computer, also you might want to copy the photos you want to save. Then sync your device to the new iTunes and copy over your music, documents and photos that you want.
If you are no longer going to use the old computer you should open up iTunes on the old computer and use the menu to deauthorize it. Be sure to use the same iTunes menu on your new computer to Authorize the new one.

  • After upgrading to the newest Firefox, the default search engines disappeared from my search bar. Why and how do I correct this? (Also: every time I download a Google search add-on, it goes away upon closing/re-opening FF)

I'm referring, of course, to the search bar located next to the URL window; prior to upgrading to the newest FF, I had the capability of choosing from several standard engines and never experienced any problems but following the upgrade, there are no engines available to choose from and I have only been able to find versions of Google search other than the standard one in the available Add-ons I am shown when I go to 'add new search engine' (as there are no engines displayed) via the 'manage search engines' drop down option.
Furthermore, I have downloaded a search engine Add-on numerous times (most often, if not always, Informative Google Search) and it functions just fine, but upon FF restart, its back to having no default engines to choose from.
I have searched Google forever looking for an answer to why this is happening and had no luck with my specific problem, so I've come to where I figured the most savvy FF users dwell - hope you guys got some insight cause it's really pissing me off at this point, hahahaha.

    Hi silverk,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand the need for all of your calendars to be up to date across all of your devices and how frustrating it can be when they are not syncing as you would expect. In this situation I would suggest reading over and using the attached article for troubleshooting.

when you opened the shared library with the newer version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11) you were given a warning that your library would be converted and could not be used by older versions - you clicked ok to go ahead - there is no updo available - either upgrade to iphoto '11 of the MBP or load your backup of the iPhoto '09 library on it - older versiopns of i{Photo can not read newer libraries

  • How to upgrade to the newest alsa-driver?

    Hi,
I think I've tried everything..I've been messing around with alsa a lot today. Here's the list of things I've tried and the encoutered problems:
1)Install alsa-driver package from repo. Not possible due to the package being outdated, it tries to install files to /lib/modules/2.4.30 which is quite odd,
2)Edit the alsa-driver PKGBUILD and build the newest ver. of alsa-driver with makepkg. Failed. The package is built correctly, but there is a problem with inserting *any* of the alsa modules. Modprobe complains about some unknown symbols and yes, I did run depmod -a before inserting the module. Not even rebooting seems to solve this problem. I get a whole bunch of errors like this when trying to insert the modules:
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_pcm: Unknown symbol snd_device_register
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_pcm: Unknown symbol snd_register_device
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_pcm: Unknown symbol snd_info_get_line
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_mixer_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_register
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_mixer_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_free_entry
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_mixer_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_get_str
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_mixer_oss: Unknown symbol snd_unregister_oss_device
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_mixer_oss: Unknown symbol snd_ctl_find_id
    Jun 26 20:33:55 DreaM snd_mixer_oss: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk
    My /var/log/messages has quickly swollen from ~300 K to ~11MB...duh :?
3)I've recompiled kernel several times trying every possible combination of building alsa(as a module, disabled etc..). It seems that the only working configuration was the initial one, when alsa was built into the kernel. Unfortunately, the kernel sources still have the old ver. of alsa-driver.
So, my final question is: How do you upgrade to the newest alsa-1.0.9b in Arch? Is it even possible?

I had a lot of the issues you're getting as well and the only way I got it to work was to completely disable alsa in the kernel, recompile it and then upgrade the kernel.
Once that was done I compiled alsa-driver through abs and then installed it and it all worked fine. OSS was disabled as well but don't know if that made a difference or not. It appears that alsa has a module called snd_pcm_oss which acts as an OSS emulation layer through alsa so I don't think you will need OSS at all. (At least I think thats how it works)
After that I just followed the wiki guide to setup the rest of alsa.

  • I CAN NOW... NOT DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE VIDEOS AFTER UPGRADING TO THE NEWEST VERSION OF ADOBE FLASH PLAYER

LETS SOLVE THIS RIGHT NOW!  I UPGRADED TO THE NEWEST ADOBE FLASHPLAYER AND NOW I CANNOT DOWNLOAD, USING MY REALPLAYER, ANY YOUTUBE VIDEOS WHICH I HAVE ENJOYED DOING FOR THE LAST, LIKE, 5 ******** YEARS!!!!  MY FAITH IN ADOBE HAS JUST BEEN SHATTERED!  PLEASE KEEP ME AS AN ADOBE CUSTOMER AND KEEP ME FROM SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER.  FIX THIS PROBLEM PLEASE!!!

That's NOT (Repeat: NOT) a Flash Player caused phenomenon. YouTube is converting ALL their videos to HTML5 and RealPlayer (which is pure unadulterated garbage IMHO) isn't able to download them now, and won't be able to until they update their software to handle the format change.
Since Adobe DOESN'T run YouTube (Google does) they can't do anything about this. YOU CAN.
If you use Firefox, you can download AntVideoDownloader and use it to download YouTube videos.
    1. It's a plugin, and NOT a full applicaiton, so it takes up less space on your HD.
    2. It works with Flash Player (unlike RealPlayer which is a competitor program)
If you don't use Firefox, sorry. AntVideoDownloader DOESN'T work with IE, or Chrome.

  • HT1443 My Macbook Pro is currently running OS X 10.4.11.  What do I need to do to upgrade to the latest version of Lion?

I am currently running OS X 10.4.11 on my MacBook Pro and would like to upgrade to the latest version of Lion.  When I check for updates, I receive a message that says no updates are available.  When i tried to purchase a Lion upgrade, it says I need to be running OS X10.6 or later.  What do I need to do in order to upgrade to Lion?   Thanks!

Buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store, install it, run Software Update, and if the computer has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU, phone the Apple Store and order a download code for Lion.

  • How do I find in the "Mac App Store" the authorize --my computer to do an upgrade on the newest imovie in Maverick? MacBook Pro 15' 10.9.2

How do I find in the "Mac App Store" the authorize --my computer to do an upgrade on the newest imovie in Maverick? MacBook Pro 15' 10.9.2. Thank you!

He shouldn't have done that. Now you have a pirated version of iMovie on your Mac that you will never be able to update. The MAS Terms of Use do not allow that type of sharing. His Apple ID is encoded in the copy on your Mac and you can't change that.
Legally you should delete the app.
Your Mac should have come with the iLife apps pre-installed, why did he do that?

  • Since upgrading to the newest OS I am getting the message "your computer restarted because of an error"  WHY

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

  • Since upgrading to the newest ios 6.1.26 itunes isn't showing my app list on the left side of the screen, nor does it show all of self made movies, only the purchased ones. Anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

Since upgrading to the newest ios 6.1.2 itunes isn't showing my app list on the left side of the screen, nor does it show all of my self made movies, only the purchased ones. Anyone else experiencing a similar problem? The iTunes store and most of the other features show up but other normal features seem to be missing too. I wish I hadn't upgraded. Anyone else having this problem????

If you are talking about iTunes on your computer use the iTunes View menu item, "Show Sidebar".
If not, I have no idea what you are describing.

  • I have an older 13" macbook with snow leopard, I want to upgrade to the newest mountain lion, can i just purchase and instal?

I have an older 13" macbook with snow leopard, I want to upgrade to the newest mountain lion, can i just purchase and instal?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
