OS X 10.5 refuses to shut down & fails to instal updates ...

iTunes 7.5
Quick Time 7.3
iPhoto Update 7.1.1
Repeatedly available software is downloaded automatically but fails to install
as during restart OS X 10.5 fails to shutdown ( Blue Screen Loops ). Forced
shutdown and restart fails to install previously downloaded updates. How do
I resolve this issue? OS X 10.5 is pretty useless with out updates and restarts.

Clutch marketing move, Apple. Way to straight up demand money for an update.
Snow Leopard (10.6) is not an 'update', but a newer Operating System than Leopard (10.5).  Apple like Microsoft does not charge for updates but does for newer Operating Systems.
It is a common business practice that allows for the development and sale of newer products.  Without the benefit of revenue income, newer Operating Systems would cease to be offered.

  • IMac G5 iSight won't shut down, won't install updates

    Hi all,
My iMac G5 (iSight) is giving me some grief.
    First, some details:
    OSX 10.5.7
I have been trying to update this machine and have successfully updated a few things, such as iTunes, iLife, etc. Updates that don't require a restart seem to go just fine. I am unable to install updates to QT7, Safari because the installer hangs up while "Configuring Installation" and won't go any further, no matter how long you leave it.
This iMac also will not shut down. The finder icons disappear, the desktop image remains, and the grey spinning wheel goes on and it will simply not shut down until forced using the power button.
It is starting and functioning otherwise with no problems.
I have disconnected it from drives and and the network in case there was something on the network keeping it, but no luck. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and the SMU, as well. No joy. Incidentally, my partner's MacBook Air is also having the exact same problem as this iMac (I posted as well in the MBA forums), but my own laptop, the one I'm using now (details below) is having no problem at all and all updates have taken.
Has anyone any suggestions about anything else I can try to clear this issue before I ring Applecare tomorrow?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Miriam,
I've just tried to run a Hardware Test but the disk is clearly from an older iMac I once had (pre-iSight) because it doesn't want to know about it. I have doubts about it being a logic board problem, however, because I'm having the same problems with a MacBook Air (but not my MacBook Pro) and it only started after a recent round of updates. Worrying, yes, but apart from not installing updates that require a restart or simply shutting down both machines seem to be performing perfectly. It's a bit confusing.
    Thanks!

  • How do I shut down Firefox to install updates (turning my Dell desktop computer off & then on has no effect) ?

When I log on to Firefox a message appears "Update could not be installed. Make sure no other copies of Firefox are running on your computer"

    Hi there dechonj,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.
Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows

P.S. The iTunes media is kept in a separate location from the iTunes application, so it is unlikely that you music is damaged.

  • Fails or refuses to shut down.

I have a new Macbook after working with Macs for years.
At the end of the day I try to shut down my Mac book. It seems to shut down.
When I get up in the morning, it is up and running.
It is either not shutting down or re starting without a command to re start.
    It seems to do both.
when I searched the forum, there were many hits on shutting down when people did not want the Mac to shut down. But this problem is refusing to shut down or failing to shut down.
    Any ideas?
    Duane Campbell

When you select "Shut Down" from the Apple Menu, wait for the screen to go completely black and make sure that the fan has stopped running. Sometimes it can take awhile to completely shut down.
    Also, try resetting your PMU.

  • Satelite C660 refuses to shut down

    Hi all,
hope someone can help, my laptop is refusing to shut down and I've no idea why.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen but probably OS is blocked somehow.
What happen when you press shutdown button?
Maybe by some running process in the background.
Before you use option for shut down, stop some running software that you can find in notification area (notification icons).
If this will not help restart your notebook, do the same again and open task manager. Check if some of running processes has extremely high amount on memory. If yes stop it and try again.
Maybe playing a bit with background processes you will find out what is wrong there.

  • Computer refuses to shut down/log off

I have a MacBook running the latest version of OS X and it's exhibiting some very peculiar behavior. As the title suggests, it refuses to shut off or allow users to log off, furthermore, some applications don't open or work properly. I ran a verify disk and permissions and they've come back with zero errors. What should be my next step in troubleshooting these issues?

    Hello,
If your MacBook refuses to Shut Down, try this using the keyboard command for Force Quit. Command + Option + Esc. That will bring up the Force Quit window. If there any applications running, they will be listed there and your computer will not shut down until those processes stop.
As for applications not opening. Try locating and send their preference files to the Trash. I'll use iPhoto for an example. It's preference file looks like this:
com.apple.iphoto.plist It's located here: MacintoshHD/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. In that Preferences folder are the .plist folders for the applications you use. Send the .plist files to the Trash. It's ok.. your MacBook will create new .plist files for you You will have to reset your preferences on these applications but considering they aren't opening anyway, this might help.
Also, if you haven't already done so get a good disk utility that you can run to clean out caches and log files and repair permissions all in one fell swoop. I use Onyx, it's free and it's here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html Download and install Onyx. Run the Maintenance and Cleaning scripts and reboot.
Hopefully something I've suggested will help.

  • IMacs almost always refuse to shut down

    Hi,
I have at home 2 iMacs and a MacBookPro, all running the latest OS.
My 2 imacs have big trouble shutting down. Sometimes they do, but mostly they don't.
Especially the most recent one (ALU) causes problems.
I shut down, nothing really happens and after a while i get the message (for instance) "iCal refuses to shut down", while iCal wasn't even running anymore. I click ok, re-shut down, and after a while he tells me it's iTunes that refuses to shut down. Same thing, iTunes wasn't even running.
This is driving me crazy... my iMac hasn't shut down normally for more than a week now...

They're connected to the same router which never shuts down. There was never a problem before with this.
Both of them have a seperate LaCie disk that i use as a backup with time machine.
I don't know what NAS is. There's no central location for iTunes or iCal. The errors can mention other programs as well (excel, ...).
I do have two MobileMe accounts (family and workrelated).

my computer displays grey screen and apple logo for 10 minutes or more during start up and shut down. sometimes it refuses to shut down . this issues started after installing OS lion. what do i do?

I don't think it's exactly an incomplete installation brody, but most likely in-correct permissions somewhere along the line that either happened, or became magnified during the upgrade. Also, it could be corruption as well.
First thing to do, is boot up holding down Shift key to do a safe-boot so we an clean up any corrupted OS caches, after that do another reboot, but go to the Lion recovery, and scan the HD for errors, repair any if you find them, and then try to do a Repair Permissions job.
That should fix the issue, if not, we can start doing a PRAM reset  and SMC for good measure.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro Workstations - Not Getting "Install Updates and Shut Down" notification for new updates

We've got a small handful of Windows 8.1 Pro workstations on our domain (SBS 2008).
The workstations show up in the WSUS Console list along with the details of how many updates need to be installed.
On the Windows 8.1 Pro workstations, at the logon screen they display "Important Updates Are Available. Go to PC Settings to install them".  If we go to PC Settings or Windows Updates via Control Panel the updates show as awaiting installation.
However, we can't rely on users to go into PC Settings or Control Panel to install Windows Updates. We need them to be installed as per Windows 7 and Windows XP - whereby when the user shuts down their workstations it displays the message "Install Updates
    and Shutdown".
Currently the Windows 8.1 Pro workstations do not show this - if you choose to shut down there are no update installation messages and the workstations simply shut down.
Has anyone else encountered this? What needs to be done?
    Thanks in advance.
I don't work for Microsoft - I just use their products.

    It does sound weird yes.
Id like to try and mirror your setup in my lab.
What settings do you have in your WSUS GPO?
Have you seen this, in the 'Configure Automatic Updates' setting?
On Windows 8 and later, you can set updates to install during automatic maintenance instead of a specific schedule. Automatic maintenance will install updates when the computer is not in use, and avoid doing so when the computer
is running on battery power. If automatic maintenance is unable to install updates for 2 days, Windows Update will install updates right away. Users will then be notified about an upcoming restart, and that restart will only take place if there is no potential
    for accidental data loss.
Automatic maintenance can be further configured by using Group Policy settings here: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Maintenance Scheduler

  • Computer Shuts down when trying to update to v4.2

    Hi Internet,
I am trying to update my firmware from version 4.1 to 4.2 and as I click the update button, my computer just shuts down and does not update.
It's like the update button is acting as the shutdown button from the start menu.
Is anybody else having this problem?
I have tried contacting apple customer support and end up playing the ping pong game from operator to operator.
    Please help

Unfortunately after that I have no other suggestions... if it was my computer I would reformat the entire computer but you need a good backup to do that something is obviously corrupt and not acting right otherwise if you have another computer that you can use to update..

You would be better off posting in the iTunes for Windows forum area since your issue is with that rather than an iPod Nano.

My iPhone 4 freezes and has now shut down since doing the update this past Saturday.

    Hi candybooist,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has steps you can take if your iPhone is unexpectedly powering off:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Cheers,
    - Ari

  • Why did my phone shut down when I started updating software?

Why did my phone shut down when I started updating software?

    Hi Patraposo,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It is difficult to know why devices behave unexpectedly; however there are several articles on the Support site that can help recover your iPhone if the update did not complete.
If your iPhone will not turn on, start with the steps in the "Power/Battery" section of this article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
If you just see the "connect to iTunes" screen, the steps in this article can help:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device

If you see another symptom, feel free to reply with more information.
    Best,
    Jeremy
