OS X 10.5 Server POP and IMAP mail settings

I am trying to get mail service to run on OSX 10.5 Server installed on a G4 machine.
Using Server Admin, under Mail>Settings it asks for Domain name (local Internet domain name) and Host name (Internet host name of this mail system).
I am unsure exactly what they want.
To me, Domain name would be tradersbend.com (registered for years).
Host name would be the name of the machine - taovaya.
However, I've tried this and many other combinations with no joy.
When restarting mail, POP and IMAP say they are starting up, but eventually return to "stopped" state. Everything else in the Mail Overview tab starts up and says "running" as it should. (I do have Mailing Lists stopped; and Mail Clustering Off)
Any wisdom I might use?

Alex -
Thank you. I now have POP and IMAP running fine.
But Outgoing SMTP and Incoming SMTP are acting strangely. SMTP is enabled. Allow incoming mail is checked. Hold outgoing mail is unchecked. Relay outgoing mail through host is checked and should relay through (my poncacity.net username)@mail.poncacity.net. Password for poncacity.net account is entered. All is saved.
I stop Mail Service. Open General tab. Start Mail Service. Everything that is supposed to run starts up and says "Running". Then somewhere along the line for no reason Outgoing SMTP and Incoming SMTP changes to "Stopped".
While both were "Stopped" I sent a test msg to another email address at a different ISP. It arrived successfully and the raw headers show it did go through the outgoing SMTP relay at mail.poncacity.net.
I also sent a test msg from my other email address to this one. So far, it hasn't arrived.
Next, I sent a test msg from this tradersbend.com to this tradersbend.com address. So far, it hasn't arrived either.
So I conclude that even if Outgoing SMTP says it is "Stopped" it sends outgoing msgs through the poncacity.net relay, but Incoming SMTP is not working properly.
I also notice that the state (Running or Stopped) on both incoming and outgoing SMTP seems to arbitrairly flip-flop from one state to the other for some reason.
Thanks for any help or insight you may provide.

  • 10.8 client  and 10.6 server email pop and imap problem

    Hi Guys ,
My problem is 10.8 client and 10.6 server.
10.6 server have email server running (pop and imap), when i configure same email account (pop) on 10.7 machine  and 10.8 machines , 10.7 machine works , but 10.8 pop does not working
    let me explaing further :
when i use 10.8 mail application to  setup pop mail account it does not connecting . But  i used the same account to connect imap it connect on 10.8 machine.
the same mail account connect to another 10.7 machine  with POP and IMAP for testing reason , it works with out any issues
POP server is running and this email account's users profile enable POP and IMAP mail settings.
    thanks in advance.

Try checking the Authentication Type for the POP account.  It is located in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > selected account > Advanced
10.8 tends to use Apple Token.  I think you will need to use a type of MD5 Challenge-Response or Password.

  • POP and IMAP aren't starting?

I used the "Configure Mail Service" option, setup both POP and IMAP access for a couple of my users in the Workgroup Manager, and the Mail Service status is "Running" (also running are Outgoing/Incoming SMTP, Junk Mail Filtering, and Virus Scanning), but POP and IMAP always show as "Stopped" in Server Admin. I don't know if this matters, but when I go to Maintenance/Database it shows "Database location" to be "Not available."
Also, Maintenance/Accounts shows "Number of accounts" as 0, even though I have two users in Workgroup Manager setup for both POP and IMAP?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Regarding logs...
    IMAP and POP are empty.
Mail Access shows "empty option value on line 10 of configuration file" page after page, nothing else.
The last line of the SMTP log shows "daemon started -- version 2.4.3, configuration /etc/postfix."
Is there somewhere else I should also look for troubleshooting information?
    Thanks!

  • Mail 3.2, Gmail and iPhone POP and IMAP Problems

This is a Mail problem but I am pretty sure it has something to do with the iphone as well....
    Here's the deal:
Up until a week ago I used this setup:
    1. My gmail account has had pop and imap enabled for all mail and it kept the email on the server
    2. My mail client on my MBP C2duo on Leopard 10.5.2 was setup to retrieve email from gmail using pop
    3. My 1.1.1 iPhone was setup to retrieve email from gmail using pop as well
    4. Gmail account was being also synchronised between MBP and iphone through the appropriate tab in itunes.
RESULT: mail would pop to both clients as new mail and I would have to mark it as read in each client. I like that cause there are certain messages I read on my MBP and some others on my iphone.
About a week ago I upgraded my iphone to 1.1.3 and that's when the problems started:
    a) It appears that the iphone is now setup to gmail's IMAP by default. So I delete the account and create one manually to work as pop
    1. So now I have an iphone setup to retrieve with pop.
    2. My MAil client on the MBP is still set to pop
    3. Gmail settings remain untouched
PROBLEM: Everything is setup as pop but acts as IMAP ?!!?!
Whichever client gets an email message first that message will not appear on the other client.
Basically if my iphone catches an emai while my MBP is asleep i'll never get it in my inbox on the MBP and vice versa
Please help me out... It's the first time an Apple product makes me feel like a good ol windows user again
    FAILED SOLUTIONS:
    1. I tried deleting the iphone account and creating it from scratch making sure it's setup correctly
    2. I tried disabling IMAP from gmail's settings
    3. I tried disabling and re-enabling pop from gmail's settings
    4. I tried using gmail's recent mode that forces a download of all recent (30 days) mail
    5. I have repaired permissions, rebooted etc etc
    Nothing changed
I have now deleted the gmail account from the MBP, re-created it and await while it re-downloads al 6000 messages before I try re-creating the account on the iphone but sth tells me it wont change anything.
Sorry for the extreme length of this post. Any help would be appreciated

But I'm not using IMAP. I never used IMAP and I do not want to use IMAP. The reason being that I know all about the problems you speak of.
I just can't get POP working as it did before the 1.1.3 update. It's really frustrating

  • Both Pop AND IMAP Gmail accounts in Mail?

OK this is bugging me. Suddenly I noticed several email duplicates from my only Gmail account, that I check on my Mac in Mail. When checking accounts in Preferences, I see now TWO Gmail accounts enabled, one POP, another IMAP. I can't remember which one is the older one that I've been using for years. I guess it's the IMAP account, since I've been keeping copies of my emails in my Mac and my Gmail "all mail" folder online.
I think it happened when Safari 5.1 asked to syncronize and/or use "x" automatically with iChat, Mail, Calendar, etc., and added the POP. My question is, which one of those accounts is safe to delete or disable in Mail? Can it be done just like that? In the Gmail settings I see both POP and IMAP are enabled. Should I just disable POP and voilá?
    Thanks.
    rolando

As you may have learnt by now POP downloads the mail to your computer and depending on your settings may also delete from server. So the mail on your computer is the only copy you have. IMAP accounts can be deleted and added later but POP are not that simple.
I suggest turn off POP, use IMAP, continue using IMAP for a while and then delete POP.
There are excellent guides in the discussions here, just search for 'switching from POP to IMAP'

  • Pop and Imap remain stopped, what is going on?

I can not figure out what is going on. Both POP and IMAP are "stopped" and I have been trying like crazy to figure out why I can not get them to start. After countless hours of searching the net and the forums I have decided to post a new thread asking for help.
I have set up the mail service in os x server (10.5.5) in the past with no problems. I just can not figure out what is going on this time though. Please help.

One mroe thing, I read in another topic where someone was having similar issues and another user had asked if the database and mail store locations existed. I noticed that mine did not. I had to create the folders /var/imap/ and /var/spool/imap/. I then pulled up server admin and selected those locations under database and mail store, prior to that there was nothing listed in database and mail store. I dont know if this has anything to do with my main issue but I thought I should throw this in as well.

One last thing, I just added my account into mail.app to see if I could send and receive email there. IT WORKED! I successfully set myself an email. So, I know it is working now. But I just need to figure out why squirrelmail is being stupid.

  • POP and IMAP side by side in Mail

Hi, is it ok to run POP and IMAP accounts side by side in Mail? I’m using POP but I want to switch to IMAP and set up a first IMAP account...

Yes, POP with one domain and two or three IMAP accounts with two other domains. Just wanted to know if POP and IMAP together is stable or if there are any recommendations when running them alongside each other.

  • Need to stop the pop and Imap receive connectors to be able to start the pop and Imap services in Service Manager

    Hello All,
I am hoping that someone else has run across this issue (may have started after CU5 was installed).
Upon every reboot I have found that the "Microsoft Exchange IMAP4" and "Microsoft Exchange POP3" services in the service manager will not start... basic reason in the event viewer is that the ports are already in use.
If I go into the ECP and disable my POP and Imap receive connectors I am able to then start the services.
After the services are started I can then go back to ECP and enable the receive connectors again and everything is fine .
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks in advance ;)
    Chris

    Hello Winnie,
I bounced the Transport service tonight (adjusting spam filter levels)... so I was able to issue a stop and re-start of the IMAP4 and POP3 services in the service manager.
I stopped both the IMAP4 and POP3 services in service manager.
I issued the start of the services with PowerShell as requested:
    PS C:\Users\administrator.XXXXXXXX> Start-service MSExchangePOP3
WARNING: Waiting for service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3)' to start...
WARNING: Waiting for service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3)' to start...
WARNING: Waiting for service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3)' to start...
Start-service : Failed to start service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3)'.
    At line:1 char:1
    + Start-service MSExchangePOP3
    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        + CategoryInfo          : OpenError: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController) [Start-Service],
       ServiceCommandException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : StartServiceFailed,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.StartServiceCommand
Then I first stopped the receive connector in ECP and issued the command:
    PS C:\Users\administrator.XXXXXXXX> Start-service MSExchangePOP3
WARNING: Waiting for service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3)' to start...
WARNING: Waiting for service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3
With the receive connector disabled in ECP it was successfully started.... then I enabled the receive connector in ECP and all is fine now
    repeated the same with  IMAP4
    to recap....
If I stop the IMAP4 and/or POP3 service in service manager, I must first disable the IMAP and/or POP receive connector in the ECP, then start the service in service manage.. and then finally go into ECP and enable the receive connector.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Gmail app - POP and IMAP together

I'm having a heck of a time getting my emial to work like my blackberry did. I want to make this work.
Does anyone know if I can configure my laptop Outlook to pull my gmail app mail using POP AND my phone to use IMAP??
I don't like the IMAP performance in Outlook.
Thanks for any suggestions you have!
    ~ K

Whilst you can use IMAP for one mail client and POP for another, it won't give you very satisfactory results...Whilst you can choose to have the POP client leave the mail on the server, it will then show up as new when picked up by another client (or even the same one again) rather than as having already been read.
Gmail POP behaves differently than other POP mail servers. In my case, I have it configured such that downloading the mail with the POP client moves the mail from the Inbox to All Mail. For me, since I usually access mail via my iPhone, it allows me to leave things 'to be dealt with' in my Inbox on the phone, then when I access them on my Mac to 'deal with' them, they are moved out of my Inbox automatically.
For me, this is a highly satisfactory workflow.
But in general, you're correct - and I certainly wouldn't consider accessing my Gmail account from more than one POP mail client.

  • Whats the difference betwwen Pop and Imap?

What is the difference between a POP and an IMAP email account, are there benefits of using one rather than the other?

    Hi
POP means mail is downloaded from the Mail Server to your mac and is stored locally. Downside to this is if your hard drive was to fail and you have not kept up-to-date backups or have not bothered to back up at all you lose all your mail. If this does not bother you then there is no down side.
IMAP means mail is not downloaded from the Mail Server and everything is stored on the Mail Server itself. Generally speaking most mail servers have redundancy built in are administered by a dedicated IT team and if you were to lose any mail odds are it would be recoverable. Other benefits are you should be able to access your mail (send & receive) from pretty much anywhere you like. All you need is 3 bits of information and access to a computer (any platform) that has access to the internet and a web browser.
I've kept this as simple as possible but that's about it in a nutshell.

  • Is it possible to let OS X Mail server POP and Sort

    Hi there!
I'm a current Kerio Mail server user and the way it's set up is like this:
All our mail gets delivered and spam-filtered at our hostingprovider's server, all mail drops into 1 big mailbox.
Kerio pops this mailbox every so often and distributes the mail to the users that are managed in kerio.
Is this setup possible with OS X Server mail services? We are receiving loads of spam and our connection acts up sometimes so this setup provides great availability.
    [edit]
i guess fetchmail comes into play ... it is installed but not configured
    [/edit]
    Message was edited by: Zimmen

    A few missing pieces here...
    1. Are you using Kerio on your machine, or that is what your hosting provider is running? (I will assume the former).
    2. Does your hosting provider accept mail to AnyUser@yourdomain, or only to legitimat users at your site? If the former, it is no wonder you are getting hammered by spam. You will take anything. Your provider might be able to filter against an RBL list, but that probably only takes out about 70% of the spam on a good day.
Anti-spam filtering takes place on the SMTP side of the server. Once the mail is delivered to your SP, you've got the mail and have to deal with it on the client side. Ugly at best. Fetchmail will not help you here.
OS X mail does have a pretty good selection of anti-spam tools. Most notably, SpamAssassin and greylisting. But both (greylisting in particular) require your mail server be the only mail server for your domain for best results.
Mail does not require particularly high availability. If your mail server is missing for a while, the sending site will try again later. Mail is very resilient to temporary failures. You could set up your SP as a backup MX host if you want, but I would submit that would increase your spam load when your server is down or missing (mail relay from a secondary host, short circuits the greylisting feature).
I do not know Kerio myself, but for mail alone, the built in mail services in OS X (current version) are pretty good. But you are shooting yourself in the foot by having your SP collecting mail for you, especially if they will accept any user.

  • Gmail and IMAP mail accounts no longer work in the mail app since iOS 6

I'm getting the User information or password is incorrect message.  Or it takes 10+ minutes to send a message.  It will no longer allow me to sync with my IMAP mail account from work.  Everything worked correctly, then iOS 6 is released and it's hosed.  I've looked online elsewhere and a few people from google are aware of the problem and are trying different things.  I tried enabling two-step id with google and providing an app-specific password to no avail.
Highly frustrated in this, and also in the fact that there are no useful workarounds.  Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi, just update your extensions ( "Change quote and reply format 0.8.1" has to be installed an to be active) by using the updating-function for extensions integrated in Thunderbird.
Or - if the extension is removed - install the latest version from the devellopers website: https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/changequote-en.html

  • IOS 5.1.1 and IMAP mail not working?

I'm wondering if iOS 5.1.1 broke IMAP mail on the iPad2 and iPhone 4S.
    Background
I have used several email accounts on the iPad2 and iPhone 4S  (and the iPhone 4 before that) successfully for quite some time.  Just recently I noticed that there were no new emails in any of my IMAP accounts.
    Tried so far...
I've deleted and re-entered my email account information several times.  I've hard "re-booted" the devices (home + off til the apple reappears).  None of these procedures have fixed things.
    Help if you can.  Thanks!

You can post the question again, but trust me, iOS 5.1.1 did not break IMAP mail on the iPad. I realize that you are frustrated by this issue, but IMAP email accounts are working for me - as I stated earlier and they are working for the majority of IMAP email users as well. I posted this in your first post and I don't know if you even tried it.
Have you tried just quitting mail and then restart the iPad and see what happens?
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
You can also turn mail off in the settings, restart and the turn mail on again in the settings and sometimes that resets things back to normal.
Settings>Mail>Your Email Account>Mail>Off. Restart the iPad and go back to Settings>Mail>Your email Account>Mail On. See if your email accounts will work.
Did you think that maybe your email provider - Thunderbird I believe you said - could be experiencing an issue on their end

  • Server 2003 and IE10 proxy settings

We are (still) running Server 2003 with a mixed Win7/Win8 desktop environment. We can control Win7 IE9 settings but all of the Win8 systems are running IE10. We also have an internal web proxy appliance. Is there any way to force the proxy settings to the
Win8/IE10 systems or will I have to wait until we migrate to Server 2012? The IE 10 .adm does not have any proxy settings, IEAK10 won't run on Server 2003 and GPP is not available on Server 2003.
    Thanks
    Matt

  • How do I copy e-mail and e-mail settings from one Mac to another?

I am fairly new to Mac and have been using a Mac mini for a few months. I have just purchased an iMac i7 and have used the migration tool to move apps and files over. However it didn't do anything with my e-mail accounts. I have several accounts setup on the Mini that I need moved over. I can't import because e-mail is not setup in the i7. Every time I open Mail on the i7 it wants me to setup an account. Is there anyway to bring the e-mail accounts and data over to the i7 without setting up Mail on the i7 first?

I agree with Antonio, but since we don't know if the Mail app on the Mini is the same version as the one on your new iMac, I'd err on the side of caution and allow Mail on the new iMac to set up; additionally, I'd prefer to start with a new preference file. In order to make it easier, you could take screenshots of all the account windows on the Mini. You can then use those to enter the info when setting up Mail on the new iMac.
After Mail is set up, quit Mail. Go to the location outlined by Antonio (Users-Library-Mail) and compare the folders with the folders from the old Mail app; i.e. the new Inbox folder should be empty -> remove that (drag to trash) and replace it with your old Inbox folder (same with Sent, etc). If you have old folders not found in the new location, add them.
When done, open Mail and your folders and emails should all be there.
