OS X 10.6.4 Update taking FOREVER to download

Just got a brand new Macbook a few days ago, running OS X 10.6.3. When I run software update and try to download the 10.6.4 update, it will literally take days to download. I tried going directly to the Apple Support downloads with the same results. This is infuriating! Anyone experience this or have any clue what's going on?

This sounds like an Internet connection speed issue, not a permissions or damaged OS one. Software Update will attempt to download the smallest version of the OS update possible, but it is still likely to be 500 MB or more for 10.6.4. The combo OS updates are the largest, so if the issue is with your connection speed, trying to download one will only make things worse.
However, Software Update will also try to download any other applicable updates for your Mac, for example for iTunes, unless you tell it not to. Thus, you might try clicking the 'show updates' button in Software Update & deselecting any others. You can install them later, after 10.6.4 is installed.
For Internet download speed issues, check your network settings & make sure you are using appropriate ones to connect to the Internet & to any router or access point provided by your ISP or that you have provided & configured yourself. You can also use any of several online speed tests to check your download bandwidth. To find them, search the web with Google or another search engine using the phrase, "Internet speed test."

  • My e mail is taking forever to download.

My e mail is taking forever to download. It comes through fine on my i phone via the same wireless router. It is showing the amount of e mails being downloaded, I know there are no large files in there. Its as if something is blocking or slowing down the download. The rest of the computer works fine, as does outgoing mail. Any clues anyone?

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • I'm backing up my new iphone 5 from icloud and it's taking forever to download my photos. It being going for four days. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm backing up my new iphone 5 from icloud and it's taking forever for my photos to download. It's been going for 4 days. It's downloaded 1400 out of 1900 photos. Am I doing something wrong?

I think you may not using the right technical terms.  When backing up to icloud, there is no way you'd get a message saying things will be wiped.  This message may be displayed when you are performing a RESTORE from a backup and then trying to cancel it.
If you are doing a restore, then you can reboot and restore again.

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 update taking forever...?

The update's been running for nearly an house now...
Is this normal or am I screwed?

    Thanks for your reply.
During my first attempt, the progress bar showed 100% (solid blue) before the download even began.  The activity monitor showed no activity for the download for more than 1 hour.
I eventually called apple, and they had me shut down the machine and restart it in what amounts to "safe mode."  I was then able to download the update, with the progress bar working as it should.
It's a 436 MB file, with the download speed on Apple's side limited to roughly 40 KB/sec.  The entire process on the second attempt required more than 2.5 hours, including download, installation, and the subsequent permissions repair that I always perform after downloading new software.

  • Ipod update taking forever

How long does it take to download the latest update to the ipod mini over usb. At this point the windows machine has been running for at least an hour and says it closed when finished. Is this normal?

It shouldn't take too long. Go ahead and reset the mini and see remove it when the apple logo shows up as long as the computer just says to wait for the iPod to finsih its restore process...

  • Latest snow leopard update taking forever

Seems like the latest snow leopard update is stuck on a blue screen with the turning wheel thing. Is it possible to restart the upgrade without messing up my MacBook?

It might get messy but eventually you won't have a choice. Try a hard restart into Safe Mode:
Be sure the computer is shut down by using the hard Power button.
Press the power button again after one minute.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Then use your machine's original software installation disk to do a Repair Permissions.
Restart your machine after removing the disk and go to the Apple Store/Support/View All Support Downloads. Select the 10.6.5 Combo Updater and use that to attempt another download/install.
Repair permissions again using Disk Utility.
Perform a backup after checking all is working well.

  • Snow Leopard Comulative Updates Taking Forever

I just upgraded my old laptop to Snow Leopard from Leopard.  That process only took one hour.  The updates however, are already on the third hour.  It downloaded them really quickly, but it is stuck on the nebulous purple and pink background with no progress indication.   How can I tell if it is hung up?  I do miss my hard drive activity light.
    Thanks,
    Chris

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Apple Configurator 1.2 - Taking forever to download iOS 6 software

So I just downloaded this update and I'm attempting to use it to sync up 22 iPads that I use in my classroom.  Prior to getting this update, when iPads were plugged in, I was getting an error that said "Can't install app."  Now that the update is installed, I've plugged in my iPads in an attempt to load apps, however, they now all say "Downloading iOS software."  They have said this for the better part of the past hour and don't seem to be progressing at all.  All of the iPads already had iOS 6 installed from the update released a few weeks ago.  Should it be taking as long as it is with seemingly no progress?
    Thanks

I called Support and they were able to resolve the issue. In my situation, I was escalated to a level 2 engineer who determined there was an issue with the .ipsw file.  The symptom was an empty directory at /Users/USER/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator/Data/Library/Application Support/com.apple.configurator,
    How we solved this was
    1. open the iPad with iTunes
    2. Select "Restore" under Version on the Summary tab
    3. Closed iTunes
    4. Open configurator
    5. Navigate to settings
    6. Select "Other" for Settings
    7. Navigate to the .ipsw created by the restore in steps 2 (located in /Users/USER/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates
    8. Prepare device
After these steps, I am now able to use the configurator.  I did this on a single iPad, so I don't know if you have to do this for every iPad or only one. You will have to experiment.
NOTE: I was told there maybe a number of different issues that cause the same symptom, so performing these steps may not resolve your issue. I recommend you contact Support.

It's taking at least an hour to download any app or tv episode. It never used to take this long until it recently updated my iPad. I'm using the exact same internet connection I did before. What can I do to speed up my downloads? I'm getting very frustrated. This is on my IPad2

  • Why is the Windows Support Software taking forever to download in boot camp 4.0?

Hi, everybody! First time in the forums.
I've surfed though hours of content to try and find an answer to my problem. Whenever I try to download the Windows Support Software from Boot Camp 4.0 it gets to about 20% and just lays there. Forever. I've just left it there for hours and nothing. I have a Macbook pro 13" and am using osx 10.7.4. This is my first Macbook and I'm not really familiar with a lot of the great features.
If anyone has gotten around this then please help me out! Thanks in advance!

Only you can decide. I'll wait till the 10.8.1 or 10.8.2 version comes out, thank you very much... What I meant is that huge number of ML downloaders (@ 4.5GB a pop, which is what the installer file takes up) surely must be eating serious bandwith off Apple's servers.
Tech Support will roll their eyes and suggest yet more patience!

  • Why is GarageBand taking forever to download?

Hey so I bought a new macbook pro (13 inch) online off of ebay. It is a 2012 edition(md101/lla). It didn't come with GarageBand all that so I had to go to the App Store and click on Purchases and install it from there. Now here's the problem. I opened it and got a window saying I don't have a complete installation of GarageBand and thus they have to bring things up-to-date and download the missing pieces. According to the progress bar, it says it will take 29 more hours although idk if I can depend on it cause at one point it will say about 26 hours ,then at another point it will say about 30 hours...
Why is this taking so long? Is this normal? Do I have to really wait this long? Is there anything I can do to speed this up? Btw i'm running on 10.8.2 if that helps.

Probably because it is the largest download you have ever attempted.  The Mavericks download is something like 5.4 gigabytes.  It takes a while to complete.
