OS X 10.6.8 FF35.0 Prefs set for update inform but 35.0.1 downloaded automatically Why? How to abort?

I always have "Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them" selected in the Update preferences. FF35.0. still downloaded and began install 35.0.1 process automatically without permission.
This has happened occasionally in the past, but usually the manual process works properly. How can I abort the automatic process once the download is underway?

As indicated in my original post, I have the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them" option selected in the FF Update preferences. And my Mac OS prefs are set to automatically request an administration password before a manual install, but this was by-passed by the auto-update.
The auto-update caught me by surprise -- I had several FF tabs on the go when the update process started, and by the time that I realized it was installing and not just downloading, the process was well underway.

System.prefs -- FOR UPDATE clause

When moving to a new mysql database, it gave me the error that it
doesn't suppport the "FOR UPDATE" clause. Turns out the database was an
older one. I tried to add the
     <mysql>
          <select-for-update>false</select-for-update>
     </mysql>
section to system.prefs, but no matter where I put it, it had no effect.
The documentation wasn't exactly clear where it goes. Now, I'm not
using the default database -- I'm specifying a named database. I'm
guessing that this option isn't working with named databases in the
systems.prefs file. Could you clarify this?

If you're using a named db, you should do
<db>
<your name here>
<select-for-update>false</select-for-update>
</your name here>
</db>
Note that turning off select for update is bad, because it essentially
defeats pessimistic locking, and you probably shouldn't ever see an error if
you aren't using pessimistic locking. So, I'd recommend that you use
optimistic locking with old MySQL installs instead.

That setting only works for system sounds like push notifications (emails and the like), some game sounds, keyboard clicks and things like that. If you want to mute all sounds you still have to turn the volume all the way down with the volume switch.

System prefs set as UK - but spellings in pages still seem to be US - help!

I have my system prefs set to British (there is even a Union Flag on the top bar next to my clock et al) - however when using pages it still corrects words which are correct in English as US spellings e.g. organisation is coming up as organization. This is only happening in pages. When I'm typing on the web - e.g. the above example, it's telling me that the US is the wrong spelling - which in my case it is. What is Pages doing? How do I change this?

If you open the inspector, click on the T (for Text) & when that opens click on the 'More' tab, down at the bottom of the new pane is a button 'Language' with a scroll down menu. Selecting 'British English' from this will lead to 'organization' being underlined in red and 'organisation' & 'colour' left alone.
At least, this seems to work in deepest Herefordshire.

You can look at the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page if you want to divert all JavaScript window.open() calls to a new tab.

I have just upgraded to OSX Maverick and now my Apple TV has taken over my iTunes videos. I have tried turning off homeshare and iHave gone into system prefs and disabled the remote, but the problem persists. Any ideas.

After upgrading to OSX Maverick my Apple TV has taken control of my iTunes videos insisting I have to watch it on my TV. I have tried disabling home sharing on iTunes and on the Apple TV menu, I have also checked the disable Infrared facility in Systems Prefs Security. Even if I put the Apple TV in standby as soon as I hit a key on my iMac, Apple TV comes back on and on my Itunes screen I get the Apple TV logo imprinted on the screen, meaning I can no longer watch it on my MAC, I have run out of ideas. Can anyone help.

I think you're headed the right direction. There is an AirPlay icon (on mine it is up near the play/pause controls) that I believe is used to set the default desitination for the video to play.
I'd never seen your issue before, but opened iTunes on a recently-upgraded-to-Mavericks MacBook and it did exactly as you described. While the video was loading, I switched the AirPlay option to the computer instead of ATV and it began playing locally (after a delay as you'd mentioned). I then read this page, which is actually quite old: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1091073, which lead me to the icon near the play/pause button. It now has Computer selected on it, and defaults to play locally instead of the ATV even after quitting and reopening iTunes. I hope that is helpful.

CS3 Photoshop. Looked in forum for way to delete pref's for Photoshop.

But I can't find it.
Over lunch I let the computer upgrade some things. Now I get back and I tried to size an image in Photoshop and it says it won't let me do it due to a program error. I tried to find where the InDesign Photoshop Prefences are but can't find them. How do I delete the pref's and let Photoshop make new ones? Thank you.
When I try to click on OK to get out of trying to do what I was trying to do in Photoshop, it won't let me out. I click on OK but it doesn't work. Instead I have to force quit to get out of Photoshop now.
I tried holding command/option/control/shift as opening and it opened with my palettes different but it didn't like it and gave same message and I had to force quit to get out of Photoshop. It would not even let me quit out.

Prefs say QT 7 Pro, but ...

I've installed my name & the registration key - the status line beneath says "QuickTime 7 Pro."
But no features. Just the regular old QT Player.
Relaunched QT and restarted the computer. A couple of times. ***?
powerbook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I deleted everything, reloaded QT, re-entered my registration info. It says "Quicktime 7 Pro" in the System Prefs. And "Buy QuickTime Pro" is dimmed out in the application.
But no Pro features or menus.
I shouldn't have to spend hours admining this crap. They took my money, offer no live support and it doesn't work. As far as I'm concerned, QT Pro is vaporware.

My preferred calendar event warning is one day ahead. This isn't available as a default option. Therefore I have to set it custom every single time I add an event. Would appreciate it if I could set this as a default in the prefs.
Would also appreciate the option to set more than one reminder. (I could swear this used to be available.)

TS2755 all of my contact "names" that appear on my text messages have now become contact numbers. I prefer the history to show the name rather than the number. how do i convert this setting back to names?

Hello, my phone has just changed a setting and I am unable to figure out how to change it back. Historically my text messages are saved and stored by "contact name". Now they appear by "contact number". I prefer contact name and would like help with how to restore or return to the original setting.

This happened to me too, and my pictures dissapeared. If you click the number, a drop down menu will appear and you can choose add to exisitig or create new contact. 50% of the time I am able to see the contact in my list the other %50 I have to create a new contact. When you do either of these the name will show versus the number. I think this is a bug with the latest update.

I'm now on another fresh OS reinstall which reverted back to the OEM Mountain Lion 10.8.4 after an upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 When I first thought that the failed OS X upgrade could have been the caused by some conflicting networking settings that I discovered in System Preferences. I tried to match the computer name which I gave at setup which the File Sharing section users i.e. name's-macbook-pro.local with the WORKGROUP name which is generated in the System Preferences/Network Preferences/Advanced WINS section uses MACBOOKPRO-****.
However I am not using a Windows PC at the moment and don't expect to be sharing with anyone else using one so I'm a touch uneasy seeing these SMB WORKGROUP settings being established by the System and realising that these settings are not allowing the Administrator user (me) override as. If I do unlock my Networking Preferences settings to edit the WINS WORKGROUP name which is automatically generated as "MACBOOKPRO-****" whatever I enter reverts back to the settings the System has chosen, if I delete this generated name the default System WORKGROP name is reset even after pressing 'Apply' and locking the Networking Preferences again.
The symptoms which make me uneasy are random visibility of a sharing server named as the first half of my Wi-Fi routers SSID ie: BTHub5 not the random letters and numbers that follow BTHub5-****.
Problems setting up Lexmark and Epson printers. Suggested update from AppStore for Remote Desktop Client, I never purchased Remote Desktop but can see that there is a folder Remote Desktop Management in System/Core Services.
Unexpected permission changes appearing all over the System, example being that the user group 'Wheel' changing to 'Staff' I don't employ people and don't want or need filesharing with other computers.
Lots of System crash reports that mostly are listed as 'Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)'
Is any of this normal or am I being stalked by a very persistent user? Thanks in advance for any tips you guys can give me.

I prefer NOT to use "tabs" but have all new web pages I open come up in new windows...

I just downloaded the newest version of Firebox and I don't like the tabs feature. Every time I click on a link within a web page or do anything else that takes me to a different web page, please open a new window.

Links that you click on a web page should open in the same tab or in a new window if you deselect:
*Tools > Options > Tabs: [ ] "Open new windows in a new tab instead"
