OS X 10.7–10.10 iSub workarounds? USB audio devices?

The old Harman/Kardon iSub (USB subwoofer) never worked right with Intel Macs—but it was always a software issue, which could be worked around: I read years ago about people connecting USB headphones or speakers, which "tricked" the Mac into sending audio to the iSub. (In the case of headphones, I assume they would also use Audio MIDI Setup to make a Multi-Output device allowing sounds from your normal speakers at the same time as the 'phones.)
Does that trick still work in Yosemite? If not, when did it stop working? Can't seem to get it working on my 10.7 laptop with Jabra Revo Wireless headphones connected to USB (they have wired modes as well as wireless).
Any other workarounds? I'd love to get this thing going with either 10.7 or 10.10! Requiring an additional USB audio device isn't a great workaround... but I happen to have such a device anyway!
Thanks for any ideas.

  • ISub back in action!!

I'm not sure if this is still a issue for anyone but here it is.
Please note: that I've only tried this on a PPC running OSX 10.5.7 and "NOT" an Intel. AND Backup before you try this.
The procedure is as outlined on, "Paul Tung's" post, back on May 17, 2006.
Topic : Possible iSub Solution in Mac OS 10.4.6!!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=485373
    1) Download the following files:
    a) Mac OS 10.5.3 Update or Mac OS 10.5.3 Combo Update. I used the Combo.
(Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices.) - I should read the "detailed information" link more often!

    c) Pacifist
    http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg
    2) Install Onyx and Pacifist programs
    3) Go to: Macintosh HD (Your HD) -> System -> Library -> Extensions AND "Trash" the following file -> AppleUSBAudio.kext
and enter your admin password when prompted.
    4) Open the downloaded Update. Start Pacifist, read or click OK on "First Launch Quick Start" window.
Click Open Package and then select the MacOSXUpdateCombo10.5.3.pkg (under DEVICES in Sidebar menu).
    5) Once loaded, go to: System -> Library -> Extensions -> AND single click: AppleUSBAudio.kext.
    6) Click the Install Button - Top left. It will ask you to install, and click install. (Make sure Allow Admin Privileges is selected).
    7) Once done, quit Pacifist and start Onyx. This process will clear the "older" AppleUSBAudio.kext is out of the system.
    8) In Onyx, go to Cleaning and make sure System and Kernel Caches is selected. Also, select Core Files and Temporary files too.
    9) Once done, restart the computer, and go to the sound control panel and set your iSub.

    OS X 10.6 Snow Leoprd & ISUB
    Summary:
The Harman Kardon iSub is not always working on Intel Macs without the use of other USB audio hardware. It is NOT working on the latest Intel Quad MAC PRO but is on a Dual G5 under OS X 10.5.8.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Plug in iSub into any USB port.
    2. Check Apple System Profiler. Device is correctly listed in Apple System Profiler, but does not work, and does not have separate volume control in the SOUND Control Panel.
    Expected Results:
Expected iSub to work in conjunction with internal speakers, external USB speakers, or with external non-USB speakers, as it should.
    Actual Results:
Device is listed in Apple System Profiler, but does not work, and does not have separate volume control
    Regression:
This bug does not occur on PowerPC based Macs, just on Intel based Macs. Tested on a Power MAC dual g5 under OS X v10.5.8, Power Mac G4 400 Sawtooth, Power Mac G4 867, Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz, Intel Mac Mini 1.5GHz Core Solo, Intel iMac 20" 2.0GHz Core Duo, Intel MacBook Pro 17" 2.16GHz Core Duo, Mac Pro Quad 3GHz under OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Workaround not working in Snow Leopard:
Attach another USB audio device (sound card, USB headset) and select that for sound output. The iSub and it's volume control will magically appear in the sound control panel. Once you select Internal Speakers or another non-USB output, the iSub and it's volume control will disappear, and will cease outputting audio.
Initially, for bug # 4590777, Apple had listed it as a 'duplicate' bug, so there was some hope of having this fixed. As 10.4.4 was the initial OS X build that shipped on the first set of Intel Macs, maybe 10.4.5 would remedy this. Then the updates kept coming. And still, it wasn't working.
Once 10.4.9 was released, I tried the iSub again on all my Intel Macs. Again, no dice. So I sent in another bug report for Apple to fix. I was hoping this would be fixed prior to Leopard's launch. To my dismay, I received the following email from Apple.
"Hello, This is a follow-up to Bug ID# 5061928. We have received the following update regarding this bug:
    <GMT14-Mar-2007 23:41:32GMT> Vanaja Pasumarthi:
Engineering has provided the following feedback regarding this issue:
Unfortunately, we have had to discontinue the support for iSub for built in audio. This is behaves (sic) as expected. Please disable iSub on yellow machines for all configurations.
We have closed this report as resolved. Thank you for taking the time to notify us of this issue.
    Best Regards,
    Vanaja P.

This has been an issue for quite some time. As an owner of a few Intel based Macs, I'm disappointed that Apple has decided to discontinue support for their quickly emerging platform. It sort of goes against the statement from Apple that "Everything just works." Funny how the iSub does work in Windows Vista, however.
Please post this for the other iSub owners who might as well know this now instead of waiting even longer.
    -Anthony V."
An iSub owner reply on using an iMic as a workaround. (this was before OS X 10.5/Leopard was released - see top of page for notes on iSub problems in Leopard.-Mike)
"I started trying workarounds (I found one that works!)
Here the setup, done with a pair of klipsches, an iMic and the iSub. First plug your iMic into your USB port on your Tower or USB Hub, Then plug your speakers in to speaker icon side of the iMic then plug in your iMic into another USB port or your USB hub. Check your Sound Preferences and you will have both of the Klispches and the iSub working!
    (he later wrote)
I'm using the imic to insure I can use both my klipsch speakers at the same time I'm using the isub not one or the other. Adding another usb device only gives you the option on an intel mac to use your internal speaker on your tower and an isub. By pluging my speakers into the imic I have the ability to use and control the volume for both my external speakers and the isub.
    -George H."
The isub issue is not fixed as of OS X 10.6 and the workaround does not seem to work either. Bob.

  • Hiccups/hangs with pulseaudio and hd audio ALC883 (ClevoM570RU)

    Hello guys,
well, as the topic already says, I'm having problems with pulseaudio combined with an ALC883 hd audio card
on a Clevo-M570RU. I got occassional hiccups and hangs and pulseaudio rewinds.
For some strange reason I can't kill pulseaudio without having it restart immediatley in the
current version of archlinux, but I can tell that prior versions showed that the wakeup timer of the pulseaudio
was increased steadily after buffer underruns occured.
Its quite rare that buffer underruns occur in which cases pulseaudio triggers a replay of the lost samples (resulting in a hiccup)
but I can trigger it about every 30-2mins secs with running flash in fullscreen (happens way less in normal window size mode).
Sometimes the general setup seems to be unstable, resulting in hiccups every like 10 secs, with increasing "severity".
So far I tried everything possible to fix this issue without any success so far. Maybe one of you guys has an insight into this.
So far I can only tell, that flash in fullscreen and also normal video playback in vlc (with VDPAU or without, fullscreen worse) trigger this issue way more often.
So chances are, this is triggered by the NVIDIA drivers, but the problem with that is, that I really need those for development work.
Also note that e.g. Ubuntu 9.04 did not trigger such an issue - maybe they had an workaround and didn't push it upstream (as usual).

I've tried vid, pid, vendor_id and product_id as parameters, none work. And if i issue modinfo on this module i can't really find a parameter that looks like vendor/product id.
The same happens if i try adding parameters to the loading of snd_hda_codec_hdmi.

Also, I have WMP, Real Player and Quick Time installed and
Flash Player 9 as well. Well, your post helped me and gave me an
idea where to look in my machine for the problem and I discovered
    these facts:
    1. My speakers are working fine
    2. My mic's are working fine
    3. My sound card and driver works fine SoundMAX HD Audio
    4. All my players work fine except audio when playing FP9
    5. My windows sound recorder does not work at all
    6. I cannot play MIDI files by default Microsoft Synth and I
have to use Quick Time to play it.
    7. I cannot play my default ( and other themes ) system
    sounds
    8. Also, I can see Microsoft GS wavetable SW Synth when
setting Audio Properties but after apply it disappears again.
    9. My all drivers are updated and machine as well.
So, I did realize that problem is in default Microsoft
Windows MIDI Synth like you also found it but after spending hours
on the forums and use nets I couldn't find any solution to work
around this problem except to reinstall my windows. I also can
confirm that this problem have nothing to do with different codec
    installed like AC3, ffdshow etc.
Furthermore, there is no any help on HP Support site for this
    kind of problem.
SO, IF I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO FIND WORKAROUND SOLUTION I WILL
BE FORCED TO REINSTALL MY WINDOWS AND HAVE AT LEAST 8 HOURS OF
"FUN" TO SET UP ALL THE STUFF I HAVE NOW ON MY COMPUTER !!!
SOMETIMES I REALLY DO HATE WINDOWS AND THINKING TO SWITCH FOR A
    LINUX !!!

  • Satellite M40: USB Audio doesn't work properly in ACPI mode

    Hi all,
I just bought a Satellite M40 laptop which purpose will be to be used as a mobile audio system.
For that, USB audio devices are a great solution.
Unfortunately, although it was working properly while recording (sound is perfect with all USB Audio compliant devices I could test), there's an issue in Playback as I got lots of clicks and pops.
After lots of tryings and google searches, I fixed the problem by switching from ACPI computer to Standard PC mode.
    That's a workaround.
But this way, I don't know anymore what's my battery status, and my laptop do not shutdown automatically.
In fact, my laptop is no more managed as a laptop :(
I suspect a very serious issue in one of the Toshiba components management. Especially, I would not surprised to be told that power management leads to some regular short system freeze, and thus the 10ms USB audio buffers fall into underrun.
This would not bother me so much if I was not part of the technical support team of a company that is also launching some new USB audio products that will fail to work properly with laptops.
    My question is :
Is there any driver / bios update that gets rid of this issue ?
If someone from the Toshiba technical support wants to handle this issue directly with me, I would be pleased to help him, as I'm concerned professionnaly and personnaly.
    Thanks in advance.
    [Edited by: admin]

    Thanks for your help Jeffrey,
    But
    - I checked with several USB audio devices, from different providers. The issue is the same.
    - I checked with several applications (Winamp, MediaPlayer, ...). Same issue.
    - I checked these devices with different laptops (tried 3 different models) : I have NO PROBLEM.
    - The USB devices I use do not need external power supply. I tried EDIROL UA-25 which works perfectly in any case, but not with my TOSHIBA M40.
    - I agree that some application can disturb audio management. But in that case, I would like to know which one from the standard installation is the cause, so that I can fire it. It's anyway curious to see that switching from ACPI to Standard mode fixes the issue, as all applications are still there. I would say the applications are not the issue, then.
    - All Microsoft updates have already been installed
    - I think I tried everything that could be done by closing applications, changing power management modes, system cache, ...
    - I have no other hardware device connected/installed (printer or whatever)
    - RECORD works perfectly. So if some application layer was disturbing, I would bet it would bother in Play and Record as well.
CONCLUSION : Unless someone can prove it (and I'm ready for some testing), I still believe there's a harware/driver layer that is faulty in the Toshiba management.
And I don't need to contact the manufacturer, as I AM one of them :)
If you are part of the Toshiba support, let me know. Maybe we can investigate together.
FYI : I had to create a new user ID for this forum as it did not accept the one I created this morning anymore :(
    Thanks anyway.

  • VT Advantage / IP Communicator

Does anyone know if IP communicator now supports video? I believe I saw a document on Cisco stating the new version of IP communicator supports the new version of VT Advantage.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
    Thanks

In the IP Comm 1.1.4 release notes...
    Cisco VT Advantage
There are some known issues when using Cisco IP Communicator Release 1.1(4) with Cisco VT Advantage.
    Problem Description (CSCee00053)
When changing a USB handset or headset, the user receives the following error message: "Audio Tuning Wizard cannot configure this device to play sound. Cisco IP Communicator may not function properly with this device."
Workaround: Reboot the PC and insert the USB device for Cisco IP Communicator followed by the USB device for Cisco VT Advantage.
    See CSCee00053 for more information.
    Problem Description (CSCee07575)
When using a USB Audio Device with Cisco IP Communicator at the same time as Cisco VT Advantage, users receive the following error message: "USB Controller Bandwidth Exceeded."
Workaround: Avoid using Cisco VT Advantage and a USB audio device with Cisco IP Communicator at the same time. Another workaround is to ensure that the Cisco VT Advantage camera and the USB audio device for Cisco IP Communicator are using separate USB ports on the PC.
    See CSCee07575 for more information.
With information on how it works with IP Communicator, it sounds like it is supported.

  • How to select Thunderbolt audio with headphones plugged in?

    Hello,
I'm currently using a late 2011 MacBook Pro with a Henge dock and two Thunderbold displays. If you're not familiar with the Henge dock, it has the connectors for the MacBook at the bottom and you drop the MacBook in to place. Very convenient when coming to the office in the morning.
My biggest issue has to do with headphone audio and the Thunderbolt audio. With the Henge dock I always have the headphone cable plugged in. It's imply an extender that allows me to plug headphones in when I want to use them. I've found that with the headphones plugged in, I'm unable to select the USB audio device for either Thunderbolt display.
When selecting either Display Audio device, it simply autoselects itself back to the headphones. I can't seem to use Thunderbolt audio if headphones are plugged in. This seems like a pretty large oversight, so I wouldn't be surprised if I was just missing something.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this working? If it's not possible, any workarounds that won't cause me massive amounts of pain?
    Thanks!
    //Tim

Does anyone have any suggestions for this, been quite awhile. :/
    -Tim

  • My newly bought Lindy USB Guitar lead is incompatible with Mountain Lion! Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Advice needed.
I recently bought the Lindy USB Audio Guitar Cable. I have plugged it into the USB port of my MacBook Pro (running Mountain Lion) and the blue light has come on the USB end. When I go into System Preferences -------> Sounds --------> Input, nothing shows up to say that the cable has been recognised. I know that it should say something like 'C-Media USB Audio Device', but nothing! The USB slots work fine for all other peripherals i have, just not this.
I have spoken to Lindy and they suggested that it may be incompatable with Mountain Lion!! (Advertised as compatable with all Macs!)
Is there anything anyone can suggest to make this work? A 3rd party workaround? If not, does anyone know of a USB to Guitar lead that IS compatable with Mountain Lion?
    Very frustrating.
    Thanks

For your product, you'll probably just need to wait for the manufacturer to release a ML compatible driver.
As for other options, the one I've been using for about a year is IK Multimedia's iRig.
    http://amzn.com/B003T1WCBW
It's actually designed for iPhone/iPad, but it also works perfectly with newer Macs that have a unified input/output headphone jack.

  • TS4113 Is there a terminal or other type of workaround to allow sound to come from the HDMI and headphone jack at the same time?

I have a late 2012 Mini, running 10.8.2.  I have a set of powered speakers plugged into the headphone jack.  My TV is running on a direct HDMI connection.  I can only stream sound through HDMI, or even select it as an output, if I unplug my headphone speaker plug.  Apple's knowlege base says this is the case.  I am looking for a way to have both plugged in all the time, and have the sound mirrored to both.
I use the speakers for itunes music, system sounds, skype, etc..  The HDMI sound is for steaming content to the TV.  I don't want to have to reach around behind the computer and unplug/plug each time I switch, for a multitude of reasons.  Any ideas out there?  Google wasn't getting me very far.  Maybe a terminal solution of some sort?  Thanks in advance.

it seems that m1r3k found a very good workaround, at least for the Mid 2010 Mac mini models (that I'm using right now). I don't know if it works also with more recent Mac mini models.
Re: After upgrading to lion, cant select HDMI sound setting
Open Audio MIDI Setup.app in /Applications/Utility, click the + (plus) button in the bottom left corner of the window and choose "Create Multi-Output Device". In the new device settings tick the HDMI "Use" checkbox and you're done. Simply go to the usual System Preferences Audio panel and choose the newly created device, without the need to unplug the audio cable from the back of the Mac mini. You can also name the new audio device as you want.
    NOTE:
This is only a workaround for a deliberate choice made by Apple on OS X Lion 10.7.2 and beyond:
Mac mini: About HDMI audio and headphones
Please let Apple know (here or here) how this has made things unnecessary awkward for users and needs to be fixed (these forums don't count, they are not read by Apple's employees)!

  • ISub doesn't work on Intel iMac either :-(

It's the only device issue I have, but from 10.4.4 and now in 10.4.5 it receives power (the green light is lit), but emitts no sound, and is not recognized in System Preferences, Sound.
I'd like to have my iSub back.

I have found a way to make our iSub work again on Intel Macs.
But this can't be done using only the iSub with the internal speakers or the computer's audio line out port.
If you use the iSub together with an external USB soundcard, and select the USB soundcard as the sound output, then the iSub volume control will show up and our lovely iSub will come alive again with the USB sound device attached.
low freq. sound will come out from the iSub and high freq. sounds will come out from the USB sound card's line output.
    so you'll need the following:
    1) USB sound output device (eg. iMic)
    2) a pair of speaker connected to the USB sound output device's line out.
    this is what I use:
    1) Comodow USB 3D Sound Controller (PCC-PD552) - http://128star.com/catalog/images/PCC-PD552-GALLERY.gif
    2) Creatve SBS Vivid 60 Speaker - http://images.creative.com/iss/images/products/headers/prod11425hdr_1_61.jpg
    3) karman/kardon iSub USB (standalone version).
again, hope Apple will fix this issue in the next 10.4.7 so we don't have to use our iSub with an external output device.
    Good Luck Everyone!

    17" iMac Core Duo 1.83GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

  • Harman Kardon iSub no longer supported. Any compatible sub-woofers around?

Ah, pangs of new technology! If you're shopping for any third party device, make absolutely sure it will be supported by the Intel Core Duo. While the sound is solid from the internal speakers, I still would like a sub-woofer. None of the ads I've looked at specify Core Duo compatibility. Luckily, I'm holding on to my old iMac and Powerbook, which gleefully recognize my iSub.

I have found a way to make our iSub work again on Intel Macs.

    Workaround
The following items each prevented the issue from occuring.
Unplug phone (android - Samsung Galaxy SII) from USB port or
    Unlock phone.
My guess is that the Import... and Folder synchronization operations invokes Lightroom to scan all storage devices including USB attached devices. Lightroom seems to choke on connected devices that has an empty volume list.
Workaround #1: Unplugging the phone removes the device from the list. Lightroom only has to deal with C:\ and D:\ partitions which are hard disk drives.
Workaround #2: In my case, unlocking the phone will allow Windows to list available volumes on the device. Lightroom probably does not know how to handle scenarios involving connected devices that has empty volume sets. Some devices may need more interactions to allow Windows to list available volumes. For me, leaving the phone unplugged was an easier workaround.

    Investigation
To investigate the issue, I reproduced the issue using procmon.exe and filtered the trace to include events with Process Name = lightroom.exe.
Scanning the trace from most recent events to oldest, I noticed a RegQueryValue operation that resulted in NAME NOT FOUND. The detail that caught my eye was that the path included "SAMSUNG_ANDROID" which indicates Lightroom is doing something that involves my Samsung Galaxy SII phone that was connected via USB -- I don't know what and why.
As a wild trial-and-error test, I unplugged the phone. As a result, the issue could no longer be reproduced -- workaround #1.The second workaround was discovered after a few minutes of trial-and-error. I don't remember what my thought process was and am currently too lazy to type any more.
If this write-up helped you, awesome. If you have a similar issue but a different workaround, please share it!

    Great!
I had the same issue, that could be resolved by your suggestion.
Actually, I renamed the module wpdmanager.mox to kill it's activity.
Disadvantage of this is that you will not be able to import files from SD card, but I copy to HDD using explorer anyway.
I totaly agree with your conjecture.

  • ISub not working?

    Hi,
just got my Mac Pro and plugged in my old iSub, but it didn't work. Then saw note on Apple Support about this very topic:
"Note: If you are using an Intel-based computer, an iSub will only work when USB speakers or a USB audio interface device are connected to the computer and selected as the default output device in Sound preferences."
I then got USB speakers, but they don't show up in the Sound Preferences although they work when I select "Line Out". Is there another kind of USB speaker to use? What is an example of a "USB audio interface device"?
    Thanks!

USB audio interfaces are kind of like a typical sound card on a PC: they provide a stereo input and a stereo output to your computer, along with other model dependant features, viaUSB. Some examples would be those made by Edirol, M-Audio, and some of the Mboxs by Digidesign. I am mostly aware of them because of their use during recording, so many of the ones I know about also have mic-pres and MIDI ports as well. They are typically limited to stereo in/out, but some support more channels and digital I/O.
this link shows a bunch and I think the Apple store sells em too:
    http://www.sweetwater.com/store/category/c695
See if there is a driver/setup application that you can find for your USB speakers.. Installing that might get them to show in the Sound preferences and may provide some other functionality, too.

  • Arch64 RAM issues [Solved]

So I thought everything was fine until an application told me I had 4gb of RAM which is a far cry from the installed 16gb.
I did plenty of digging around and narrowed it down to a couple possibilities, but first my investigation:
    I started with free:
    [vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ free
total used free shared buff/cache available
    Mem: 4015688 858084 115144 24832 3042460 2860360
    Swap: 16777212 22460 16754752
As you can see it shows their is 4gb of RAM much as the application did.
You can see I have 16gb of swap; I am aware and am not confusing swap with RAM, I damn well have 4x4gb sticks according to the memtest86+ option on boot.
So then I thought hardware and tried dmidecode --type memory:
[vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ sudo dmidecode --type memory
    [sudo] password for vuvffufg:
    # dmidecode 2.12

Found it quite strange that the OS can obviously see the memory it just isn't being allocated, also what is with the slow clock speeds?
I found a similar output with lshw.
So I moved on to checking how it is actually initialized in dmesg, and honestly a lot of what was output I don't quite understand, I noticed that some memory was being reserved by the RAM map given by BIOs yet have no obvious way of disabling the BIOs RAM scheduler.

I figure there is plenty of unnecessary info in the dmesg and I apologize, but I want to find the problem of this illusive RAM.
    My system specs:
    AMD FX-8350
    4x4gb CMZ8GX3M2A160 Corsair RAM
    Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
    NVidia GT 640
Please can someone guide me to the answer of the missing RAM?

    Yes it is 64bit:
    [vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ uname -a
    Linux HereAndNow-Main 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 18 16:21:02 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  • Laptop screen does not turn on after resume from suspend/hibernate

I use systemctl suspend/hibernate to resume,  but the screen does not turn on from resume. everything else still functions just fine, meaning i can type in reboot and reboot, but a "turned off" black screen.

Suspend has always been problematic under Linux. It seems to be hit or miss for the most part, but here are some things you can try:
Use an LTS kernel, tuxonice, pm-utils, etc. See Suspend and Hibernate
    Try a different graphics driver
Tweak the driver module parameters or build your own driver.
Unfortunately I don't have experience with the radeon driver, so I can only give you ideas.
