OS X 10.8.5 mac mini hdmi audio output issue

I am running a 2012 Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 and my Mac is set for audio and video output via HDMI to my AV receiver / TV. I have recently noticed that HDMI audio output ceases to function once the computer goes to sleep. A full computer restart is required to resolve the issue which is an inconvenience to say the least.
Or is anyone aware of a simple fix?
All my software is up to date, the HDMI lead and connection works fine for video and audio works fine after a restart so it must surely be a software error. Worked fine until the latest OS X update...
Grateful for any help!

  • 2010 mac mini hdmi sound output

    Hi,
i have following audio setup via hdmi of my mac mini:
    mac mini -> yamaha rx-v 665 -> philips tv
If only the receiver is turned on i have it as display and hdmi audio output device with 8-ch sound output. But as soon as i turn on my tv, my mac mini switches the sound output to my tv with only 2-ch sound output.
Anyone an idea how to prevent switching my mac mini to the tv sound output?
    thx

I am trying to get my Mac Mini (2010) to use the speakers I have connected for my Samsung 40" TV through my Yamaha receiver as well. I connected to the TV to my Mini via HDMI thinking it would take care of video AND audio, but I cannot get the audio to function. Do I need to connect from the headset port to my receiver? If so, into which port?
My dream of making the mini and TV combo is taking a hit.

  • 2010 Mac Mini HDMI 1080p output to Samsung B750

    Hi all,
I just got the new Mac Mini. My primary reason for getting it was because it had an HDMI output. I've now hooked it up to my Samsung LCD via HDMI to HDMI and it automatically detected it as 1080p. The image was pristine!
However, the issue I am experiencing is quite irksome and basically defeats the purpose of having it as a HTPC. There is a severe delay between the movement of my mouse and the actual display of it on the screen. There is also audio/video syncing problems.
This problem does not occur when I have it hooked up to my original monitor via miniDP, so I'm assuming it must be a TV or Mac display issue when outputting at 1080p. Is there a specific setting that I must do to either the Mac or the TV?

I just bought a mac mini(2010) and had the same issue as coaster - mini to samsung P2270HD via HDMI gives a very bad picture quality. Took the mini back to the store and they reproduced the problem on the same monitor. Then the guy took a dvi cable and via HDMI-DVI adaptor connected it to the same monitor but on DVI input. Picture quality was fantastic.
Now why did that happen? Same HDMI port but different input to Monitor

  • TS4113 Mac mini looses audio output through HDMI after being in 'sleep mode'

Since a month or so, my Mac mini is unable to send audio through HDMI output after being in 'sleep mode'.
Recently this was no problem, but now I cannot hear anything after unsleeping (unless I reboot fully).
    Please help.

This is not just a Mac Mini problem.  I've found comments from people with all kinds of Mac, with any kind of external sound device, who all have this same issue.
The common factor is Mountain Lion.
Apparently there is a new build (12F42) which is supposed to fix this.
    http://www.gadgetguide4u.com/new-os-x-1085-build-number-12f42.html
Apple released it to their employees on the 25th Sept.
Here's hoping that build is available for the rest of us soon ...

  • Mac mini hdmi video output blurry

I have an Aug 2011 mac mini plugged into an AV receiver en route to a sony bravia 32" and the resolution is pretty bad, especially text and photos.  PS3 and HD cable box output look great.  I've tried working with the picture resolution on the tv but that does little to help the fuzzy mac mini video output.  I have an earlier vintage mac mini that used a monitor cable to the tv and the resolution was fine -- do I have to go back to that?  It seems from the message boards that windows 7 on mac mini works fine and looks great but that OSX is failing to deliver a sharp image.  Suggestions?  Or is there some software fix available?

  • How to get the Mac Mini Digital Audio output at 192kHz?

I have a mid 2011 Mac Mini (and love it). According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4806, "The headphone / line output port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS)."
So there is digital audio output to 192 kHz but how do you configure it to work? Using the Audio Midi Setup Utility, I can set the sample rate to 96000 Hz -- but it won't go higher to 192kHz. Anyone know how to do this?

That is in some ways confusing.  For the analog output, the
internal DAC can support 24 bit/192Khz audio data.  It does
require an application that has the capability of playing back
    such material.
The TOSLINK optical standard does not support this data rate.
It has nothing to do with the Mini, it is the standard itself.  The
TOSLINK optical spec is 96 kHz, 24 bit stereo (uncompressed).
The mini will however support multichannel, 24 bit, 192 kHz
(uncompressed) via the HDMI interface.  Also, again,
the playback software needs to support it.
Just as a final note, unless the source material has the
higher sample rate format, there is no benifit to outputing
at the higher sample rate, especially if the source some
lossy comporessed format (mp3, aac, Dollby and DTS
    non-HD formats).

  • Mac Mini Digital Audio Output

    Hi,
My friend is trying to use the only audio output from the Mac Mini (1.42 GHz) as a digital out. He was under the impression that when you hook up the right cable (which has bought and we double checked-optical audio cable with Toslink adaptor.)
But when we go to pref. menu there is no selection for digital audio out except for the regular line out.
Any ideas or tricks to getting digital out on this Mini?
    Thanks,
    Babak

Does he have the 1.42ghz G4 Mini? If so, that model is not a digital/optical audio out jack, at least not the 1.42ghz model I have. Did not check to see if a later update prior to the intel switch added the port to that model. My 1.66Ghz intel mini has the digital/optical audio out. Tell your firend to check the manual that came with his mini, it will tell you if it is a digital/optical out port or not.

  • 2011 Mac Mini HDMI only 2Ch Stereo

Wow is this frustrating. I've had my Mac Mini for about a week, and for the life of me, cannot get surround sound working via HDMI. I've read so many posts about people with this problem but I can't find a definitive answer for a fix. All I want is for the Mac Mini to passthrough the audio so that my Pioneer Receiver can handle all of the Dolby stuff.
    Setup is simple -
    Mac Mini ------> HDMI -------> Pioneer VSX-1020 Receiver --------> Samsung 55" LED
Inside of the Midi Audio options, it shows my receiver as the audio device, and I have all of the options for 2ch, 8ch, etc. I also selected Dolby 5.1. I can only get PCM or Stereo to display on my receiver while ticking through these channel options, while I would expect Dolby to display if it is receiving a Dolby signal. Also, when I do the test tones in the Configure Speakers area, I get the correct test tones from all channels. BUT.........
No matter what I play whether it be iTunes, VLC, etc, I am only getting 2 channel sound and my subwoofer.
Can anybody help?? This seems like such a simple task yet it has me pulling my hair out.

ive had my 1021 for about 2 months and i think its great. Do you like yours?
i have 5.1 using optical cable to one of the optical in ports on the 1021. But you will need an optical-to-miniOptical adapter tip to use in the mini.
then make sure that any app through which you want 5.1 has that specified in its prefs. (like VLC)
VLC always has the option ' out through system', and if the system is optical out, then 5.1 will pass.

  • Problem switcing Mac Mini HDMI via an Onkyo 606 Receiver

I'm having problems when attempting to switch my Mac Mini HDMI via my Onkyo Receiver. Connecting via a DVI to HDMI converter. Works fine when connected directly to the TV.
When connected via the Onkyo, I get the Apple logo at the begining of the boot-up process, but when the screen would ordinarily switch to my desktop background, the screen goes blank.
    Any suggestions?
    John.

Do you have a second computer at your disposal? In cases like this, the best debugging method is to use a second computer and create a screen sharing setup under OS X Leopard, or a VNC set up if the second computer is not a Mac running Leopard. That way you will be able to see exactly what the mini is doing, even though the TV is blank.
Probably, in the end, you are going to need something like Gefen's DVI Detective to get HDMI switching to work the way you want it to.

  • Mac Mini, HDMI option problem

On my Mac Mini,In sound output options I cant select HDMI for my TV since upgrading to Mountain Lion

I was able to get sound form my VIZIO GL47L after a reboot when using it as the only display. However, audio does not work for me when running dual displays.
I am thinking I will most likely break down & buy an AppleTV and Airplay mirror it.

  • Mac Mini HDMI - Stuck CD

    Hello,
I have a CD stuck in my new Mac Mini HDMI.
    * It does not appear in the Finder as a CD.
    * Disk Utility shows the CD drive itself, but all options for eject, format, etc are all greyed out.
    * Booting with the mouse button down does not work (I have a bluetooth keyboard; however, I selected to stop using it and connected a wired keyboard)
    * Booting with C down does not work
    * Booting with Option down until getting to the firmware boot disk selection menu, then pressing / holding the eject button does not work
    * I used the Terminal command "drutil eject", the drive makes the eject noise, but nothing comes out
    * Tried System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ double clicking Eject.menu - the menu only has a greyed out drive listed
I think that's everything I've tried. Please let me know if there's anything else I can try.
    Thanks for all your help!

    I figured out the 'problem'
Let me pre-face it by saying, my wife originally emailed me at work talking about this disc she couldn't get out.
Flash forward to now. I was fishing around with my work badge (thin hard plastic) and I couldn't feel anything that felt like the edge of a disc. So, after getting up the nerve I took a blank DVD, and slowly let the drive catch it and pull it in. Loaded up just fine.
I guess the "Stuck CD" must have evaporated
Good new is, I now know every single way to get the disc out should this happen to me for real (short of completely disassembling the Mac Mini). For now, all I can do is laugh (quietly so my wife doesn't hear).
    Thanks for helping out Boece!

  • Mac Mini A1176 Audio

    Hello Everyone,
I'm faily new to Mac world and I have a question about Mac Mini A1176 Audio to HDTV. I'm trying to make a HTPC and followed couple of guides online but I didn't get clear understanding of Digital Audio from Mac Mini to HDTV. I can configure the structure with stereo headphone to RCA but would like to know if there is a possibility to get digital audio. I have DVI to HDMI cable running from Mac Mini to HDTV but it doesn't give audio (as also stated by mac documentation). I would appreciate any response that could direct me to correct configuration of my HTPC with digital audio.
    Thanks,
    Pyraxic

Only the newer Mac Mini's with a true HDMI output connection supports digital audio down the display cable.
If your HDTV or Stereo Receiver supports Optical (Toslink) Audio input, then you could use a Toslink cable with a 3.5mm adapter on one end connected to the Mini's headphone jack. see > NewerTech CBLAOPTMT Toslink to Mini Toslink Optical... in stock at OWC
If not, then you are limited to the current 3.5mm to RCA cable connection that you are now using.

  • Mac mini optical audio failure

Hi, I ask for help regarding a problem that is affecting me about my Mac Mini 3,1 with Lion 10.7.1 connected to an amp with optical cable Sony HT minitoslink -> toslink.
Until a few days ago, everything has always worked perfectly. In these days, after turning on the mac mini, the audio comes easily to the amp, so I can see DVD movies and MKV in multichannel audio mode. After about 10 minutes, while the video continues, the sound stops. I try to restart the mac mini but the problem remains.
In addition, when i disconnect the optical cable from the amplifier side, the red light is not present. If I link a headphone to macmini or set-up to internal speaker analog audio works fine.
If I turn off the mac mini and power back up after fifteen minutes, the optical digital audio back, but it turns off after 10 minutes.
I tried to connect the cable to another macbook: it works regularly and the red light is turned on regularly for some time.
I did a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.7 on a USB drive and unfortunately there are the same audio issues.
In your opinion can be a problem with cable or there is a problem on macmini sound card?
I tried to reset the PRAM and SMC, permission repair, delete audio preferences, but nothing changes.
I also tried the Apple Hardware Test and the Apple Diagnostic Disk and the result is okay.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you for your attention

Hello, I solved the problem. I moved the Mac mini in a ventilated place, then I turned it on and I put the headphones into the "audio out". I restarted the computer three times, then I put the optical cable and everything works as before!
The CPU temperature was 72 ° C. I used the software smcFanControl and the temperature dropped to 52 ° C. I think the Mac Mini overheats so much. Now is okay, I have seen many movies in Dolby Digital and DTS.
I hope that you solve the problem.
    Goodbye!

  • Mac Mini for audio recording using LOGIC X

Has anyone had experience using the latest Mac mini for audio recording? I'm thinking of purchasing the 2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x8GB 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm  model. I'll be using Logic X along with Reasons, Wave, UA plugins with a Apollo I/O  I'd appreciate any feedback and or suggestions.

I'd work off of another hard drive as much as possible.  Install the applications to your boot drive, but keep your data on a separate external hard drive.  If you try to run OS, apps and big audio data off of that 5400, I foresee performance issues even with 16GB of RAM.  Also, don't forget a second external hard drive for your backups.
