Os X always forgets my preferences

The bug I have is that os X won't automatically save my preferences...
for example, an application that I have deleted will keep appearing as a "question mark" in the dock.
Or the preferences that I have assigned to a particular program will be lost after reboot.
I have recently updated to Snow Leopard, but I think I had that problem just before... I hoped that updating would solve the issue, and it seems not to be the solution...
Does anyone recognises the problem ? ... as it is quit hard to troubleshoot

Flo

Hey Richard,
thanks for the tip... I also came to that conclusion... I wondered whether it was necessary to do a back up as a "disk image.".. and if that was the solution to avoid having to reinstall all my programs... or if I could simply drag and drop installed programs from the back-up disk... I suppose Time Machine is my tool for that...
Also, I came to the conclusion that if my preferences won't save, it could be because somehow I don't have the "read and right" permission to do so in the Preference folder... Indeed, I came to the conclusion that I have changed my computer's name (for using an internal network to connect my computer and the Ipad instead of my rather weak Wifi signal )... and that my computer now has this new network's name. (I might have confused myself in the process).
Not very solid knowledge, but I hope this might be useful for others...
Yours,

  • Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start?

Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start? Not every time, but often. It's very frustrating to have to re-enter all my prefs. Every once in a while I start up InDesign CS6 and the new document dialog shows page sizes in po (I always use inches) and the prefs all seem to revert to default.

Do you have a Windows PC and when shutting down, is Indesign still open? If so, this can result in a damaged preferences when still writing while Indesign is being terminated by the system.

  • MacBool Air / Leopard keep forgetting file preferences.

    Hi,
My MacBook Air keeps forgetting file preferences. I'm an audio engineer, and so I want my audio files to open in the programs I prefer over iTunes. Also, quicktime can't play most AVIs, yet it tries to open them.
I know how to set the preferred programs in the info dialog. But as soon as I restart (which I do about once a week) all these settings are gone. This is particularly annoying with iTunes, as it conflicts heavily with my other software, but I can't trash it until I found a good batch convertor.
I first noticed this forgetfulness after switching on FileVault.
The question is: How can I make my macbook remember these settings?

This information is stored/controlled by Launch Services. I would try resetting the LS database and see if that helps.
    Run these commands in Terminal:
    cd /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/
./lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Hope that helps...

  • My iPod always forgets which song it played after a few hours.

Since I updated to iOS 6.0 my iPod 4G always forgets which song it already played in shuffle mode. It always starts to play the same song after it hasn't been used for a few hours. Now I'm having the most recent version and I still have the problem.

Restore iPhone with iTunes on your compter. When prompted "Set Up iPhone as New". See if better. If still problem, make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple Store for free quick battery diagnostic testing.

  • It always open system preference and firefox everytime i start my mac

it always open system preference and firefox everytime i start my mac.
what should I do to get ride of it?

When you shutdown a window appears to uncheck the loading of programs when the machine starts back up again.
Unfortunately one of Lion's annoyances is you have to keep unchecking this box each time as it rechecks itself.
A hack is to lock a preference file (aka .plist), I haven't tried it.
Unfortunately, it will recheck itself. One permanent fix is as follows:
    1. Close all apps you don't want to open at startup.
    2. Open your user Library folder. It is normally invisible, so press the Option key while selecting the "Go" menu in the Finder then select "Library" to open it.
    3. Use the Get Info dialog "Locked" checkbox to lock this plist:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist
where "~" is your home folder and "*" is a sequence of characters (12 in my case). No need to delete the corresponding lockfile.
This plist is where the System stores "reopen windows" info, so the System can't change/delete it if it is locked. Works fine for me and others.
    hope it works for you.
Also look for Lion Tweaks, that also may help.

  • Why does OS X 10.9 forget system preferences?

I'm new to Macs, having just transferred over from Windows, so please bear with me if I appear to be asking something very obvious.
Anyway, I'm running OS X 10.9.4 on an Mac 21" 2.7 GHz, and have set up a few preferences in the System (such as mouse gestures, automatic hiding of the dock etc.) But, every time I shut down, the system appears to have forgotten my settings when I boot up. It doesn't take long to re-set them, but it's a nuisance.
Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?
    All help gratefully received ............

In fact I've realised that there a number of things that the Mac isn't remembering to do:
    1) it isn't remembering the system preferences I select (as above)
    2) I installed an extension for Safari, the DuckDuckGo search tool. Each time I open Safari, it asks me to go to the Preferences>Extensions window and either enable it or uninstall it. Whichever I do, the computer isn't remembering the selection when I quit Safari and/or shut down, and the next time I open Safari, I have to go through the same routine.
    3) For some reason whenever I log in, it opens the Mail program, even though it isn't listed as a login item in System Preferences>Users, and my default mail program is Outlook (in fact I've never knowinglyl opened Mail). When I want to shut down or restart, I always quit Mail. The appropriate command from the Apple menu gives me the option of reopening windows when I next log in. I always choose not to reopen windows (thinking that that way  it will prevent Mail from reopening) but when I reboot, there it is.
As I say, this is all very odd as an identical Mac bought at the same time hasn't got any of these issues.
Am I being very silly and missing something obvious or is there a problem here?

  • OS X 10.5.5 always forgets Wireless network after bootcamp reboot

I have my network preferences set to "remember network", but every time I reboot from bootcamp to go back to "Mac Mode", I have to re-enter my SSID, security type and passphrase.
The wireless router does not broadcast the SSID. Is that why network restart says it's not there? Since it supposedly "remembered" my preferred network, why doesn't it just try to connect anyway? When I reboot to Windows mode, I have no such problem, it's only returning to Mac OS X.
It's a PITA, and then I always have to adjust my system time because it's off by the UTC-offset amount.

After reading some other threads, I removed "System Preferences" from the dock and now it works!
I read that some other people moved System Preferences from Applications to Utilities, and undoing that solved the problem. I did not move System Preferences, but I did not put it on the dock. Removing it from the dock seems to have solved it. Go figure.
Now, problem number two... the time doesn't get set properly until I select "Open Date & Time..." then it corrects, just by opening that.. I don't have to do anything else.

  • Preferences window always opens after boot.

After working on my new iMac for a couple of days, I now notice that every time I switch on the Mac, when it presents the desktop, it always opens the preferences window.
This doesn't happen after the Mac is simply woken from sleep.
It's not a big deal, but maybe it's an indication that something needs my attention.
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • Firefox will not save my "Always do this with this file type" preference.

Alright, bear with me because I am extremely new to Firefox. Anyway, when I download a .torrent file for uTorrent, it asks me the obligatory "What to do with this file type" question. Great. But when I checked to be sure it was opening uTorrent (Yes.) and ticked the "Always do this for this file type" box. Then, I clicked "OK". Awesome.
Then, after that, when I try to download a .torrent file it asks the same question again. Click click. and again. click click. and again......you get the picture. Why wont it remember this preference?

Sites override the "Always do this" preference by serving files with a special HTTP header known as '''Content-disposition: Attachment'''
You can look for this happening by installing the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3829 Live HTTP Headers] extension then accessing it from the '''Tools''' menu just before clicking a .torrent link to monitor the headers sent.

  • Internet Explorer always wanting to re-download ta...

If I switch from one tab to another in Internet Explorer on my Lumia 635, it will *always* attempt to re-download the tab that I am switching to, even if I was only away from it for a moment. This is a big problem when I try to e.g. brows the internet on a train, where I often lose service in tunnels. I will open a tab, read it for a while, follow a link in a new tab, and then switch back to the original tab...only to find that the data from the original tab is gone, and now the phone can't re-download it because I'm in a tunnel with no service. It's also problematic when I'm looking at tabs with large websites in places with poor reception, because it can take forever for the page to download. Annoyingly, it always forgets where I was in a page, so if I'm part of the way through a long page that I switch away from for a moment, it will jump me back to the top of the page when I return to the tab.  And of course, it's needlessly running through my data allotment downloading the same things over and over again.
This happens even when there are no other apps active and the phone has plenty of free memory, so if it's a memory manager issue, the manager is obviously being *way* too aggressive.
Is there a way to make my phone actually remember the data in each tab, so that I don't have to re-download a tab every time I switch back to it?

  • My windows always lose focus

recently my macbook cannot work well 'cause the windows always lose its focus. i canno find out what's wrong with my computer. i tried restart, clean the PRAM and even reinstall the os. but all did not work out.
please help me .  this problem is so annoying that i cannot type fluently and even cannot operate with a dropdown menu.

That could be the solution... but no luck..
Now, I´m running with stack: v6.01.03(D)
...and the problem is still there.
    *More background:*
I am using a SonyEricsson sync program, every morning I connect my mobile via this program. The program is set to autosync the first thing when it detecs the mobile via bluetooth. The laptop stays often in the it´s dock and when I leave it (with the mobile in my pocket) and come back, they find eachother again and the sync starts. This way I never need to start the sync by myself which I always forget otherwhise.
The problem is that my computer sometimes checks if my mobile is still there (I suspect), and each time it starts to use the internal bluetooth device, the focus of current window I´m using is lost, this is of course very annoing when I´m writing something etc. This occurs regardless of the result of the search, ie regardless of it finds the phone or not.
Is there any workaround without losing that my phone autoconnects with my computer and the sync starts?

  • After Effects CC import "Sequence Footage" frame rate settings in "Import" preferences

Just started using the new AE CC (v12 as Adobe will not refer to it as) I noticed one thing that seems to work differently from CS6 and that is in the preferences for import Sequence footage settings.  It doesn't seem to work normally, at least for me.  I don't know if this is an issue related to how AE CC works with the cloud but the dfault frame rate for sequence footage importing is 30fps.  I am trying to import footage that is natively 23.97 at 24 fps.  So like in CS6 I go to Preferences - Import - Sequence Footage - frame per second and change it from 30 to 24 frames per second.  Closed the software, opened it back up, checked the settings and saw that they took, it still says 24 frames per second like I told it.  But when I import a piece of 23.976 footage, it comes in at 23.976 as opposed to the 24 fps I set it as.  Same goes for 30 fps footage, it comes in at 30 fps and not 24.  User error is always my first assumption, I'm not proud i just want it to work, am I doing something wrong or just confused?  Thanks for any help.  p.s.  help is not someone responding with, "I don't know" or "I don't have AECC yet".  I know somebody is going to!

    Hi Tim,
WOW!  Thanks for the super-fast reply!  As soon as I posted this I realised I should have mentioned that I am importing DPX files.  I do import quicktimes as well but know that the footage import does not apply to a single file, only a sequence of files.  But I still wonder if I may be either doing something wrong or am just a little confused.  I have been using After Effects since CS3 doing compositing for film and I always use DPX sequences.  I did a bunch of comparing and back and forth with AE CS6 and AECC while trying to figure this out.  I always set my preferences up when I upgrade before I start working and I always set them up the same.  I have been using CS6 since last July and it still works the same.  What I did is imported five or six different DPX sequences, some were rendered out as 24 fps, some at 30 and some at 23.976.  Assuming AE looks at the metadata to decide how to auto interpret, AE CC opened them all at their native frame rates of the just mentioned 24, 30 and 23.976 respectively, even though I told it to import at 24fps in the preferences.  I also imported the same files in AE CS6 and they all opened at 24 fps like always.  I know I can change the frame rate in the "Interpret footage" option, that is what I have been doing today so that I can work with footage in 24fps but since I have it set in the preferences to import image sequences at 24fps, I am perplexed as to why it does not do so, so I do not have to interpret the footage to my preferred frame rate, as is the case in AE CS6 as well as it was in CS 5.5 and CS 3.  Since I was lucky enough to have an Adobe employee chime in Tim, I would be curious to see what you may find if you recreated this scenario.  Would it be possible for you or someone at Adobe to set the sequence footage import frame rate to 24 fps in the preferences then try to open a piece of footage that is natively 23.976 fps in both AE CS6 and AE CC?  Like I said, I certainly beleive I may be doing something wrong but I would be very curious to see what you find on your side.  I would not be suprised if it imported at 24 fps in AE CS6 and 23.976 fps in AE CC.

  • Disable preferences option to temporarily save documents (security hole?)

    Hi Adobe Community,
we have a project where we want to use Adobe Acrobat X as Scan-Software for secure content. With the help of a predefined action, the scan gets directly encrypted.
The problem that we have with this approach, is that there is a preference option that allows to temporarily save the document in regular time periods (1-99 minutes). If this option can be activated by the end-user, there may be secure content on the hard drive of the PC without encryption. This would be a security hole - therefore the question:
Can this preference be deactivated by default from the central IT. Effectively, only 2 workstations in a special secure area need to have this special configuration.
    Thanks & Best Regards
    Kristian

Simple answer - no. Users can always access their preferences.
