OS X and Processor Freeze

With Lion and now Mountain Lion, I am experiencing frequent "freezes" with my Early 2008 Mac Pro.  While I have been uable to determine a cause the associated effect is that some action starts the beachball spinning.  When this happen I watch processor load and it dips to 0 or 1% and remains at that level, Virtually all GUI process fail to operate -- the dock won't launch, bring up contextual menus etc, I can't launch the force quit dialog, essentially nothing will work.  I have occasionally experienced kernel panics where processor use spikes but with these "freezes" the processors seem to become inactive or "go to sleep" .
The only option is to turn off the machine with the power switch, and then reboot.  It is very annoying because it can happen as much as once an hour
I have run virus scans and found nothing.  The apps I use most frequently are Safari, Pathfinder, Launchbar, Filemaker, iTunes and Mail.
Are others having similar problems.  An OS-X issue or might this be a local hardware (processor) problem.
Any ideas on how to analyze this issue further are appreciated.

You could try the usual procedures like resetting pram and smc
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

and verify disk + repair permissions in Disk Utility.
May or may not work.
Your anti-virus software may also be the offender.

  • Intermittent keyboard and trackpad freezes in 10.5.2 (not again!)

    Hi all,
I'm having a major issue with my MacBook Pro built-in keyboard and trackpad. This issue is incredibly reminiscent of the previous widespread keyboard/trackpad freeze problems, documented in a number of threads, such as here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5860606
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1196400
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6103438
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1190210&tstart=0
What's special about this case is that these issues began very recently, well after I installed Mac OS X 10.5.2, which I recall is supposed to provide a fix for exactly this issue. I've never had a problem with this MacBook Pro notebook before, so this is incredibly unnerving.
The issue is frustratingly intermittent, but frequent. Sometimes the entire keyboard and trackpad locks up (freezes) and won't acknowledge any input whatsoever. Other times the keyboard and/or trackpad appear to get "choppy", sometimes the keyboard will miss a key causing a typo while typing or the trackpad will suddenly stop moving the cursor. Other times the keyboard will repeat keys by accident, causing maaaaajor typos (kind of like that).
What's really weird is that I'm seeing the floating "eject" bezel appear (the symbol that you see when you hit the keyboard's eject button) very frequently, when my fingers are nowhere near that key and I'm sure it's not pressed. This even happens sometimes when I'm not using the keyboard at all, just the trackpad (most often while scrolling with the two fingers gesture).
I've troubleshot this in a number ways. Here is one such troubleshooting session's activity log that I kept while performing the troubleshooting:
    ---- CLIP ----
MacBook Pro Keyboard Freeze problems troubleshooting log
    * Symptoms are a frozen keyboard and trackpad, that is, no input being recognized by the keyboard or trackpad. Not even the light of the caps lock key lights up when the issue is present.
    * Restarted computer. Issue recurred moments after logging back in and beginning to type.
    * Restarting, zapping PRAM. Issue is gone for a little while but has recurred.
    * Found a single line at the time issue began again in the "All Messages" log shown by Console.app that reads as follows:
    4/24/08 Apr 24, 8:58:15 PM kernel USBF: 551. 7 IOUSBCompositeDriver[0x65b7280](IOUSBDevice) GetFullConfigDescriptor(0) returned NULL
    * Restarting computer again, trying to boot in verbose mode. Can't!! Keyboard wasn't recognized even at this stage! Can't log in either, keyboard unresponsive at login screen.
    * Restarting again (via external USB mouse). Login window comes up and keyboard input is acknowledged. Very strange.
    * Keyboard input lost once again after using the keyboard for a short period of time.
    * Restarting, zapping PRAM again, and Logging in as Leopard's "Guest" user to try and isolate issue...no good, just seconds after logging in, the keyboard and trackpad freeze again.
    * Restarting once again, this time everything works. Noticed that the keyboard backlight is not lighting up in low-light situations. Trying to change the light level with the keyboard keys always results in the keyboard backlight bezel showing up with a prohibitory symbol. This is looking more and more like a keyboard driver issue.
    * Repairing disk permissions, no problems reported. Verifying disk itself, no issues reported. Issue persists.
    Observations and Lessons learned:
    * This issue began slowly, with freezes sometimes happening hours apart from one another, however it accelerated quickly. Now sometimes only mere seconds after logging in, my keyboard is frozen and sometimes the keyboard is even frozen at boot time, so that start up modifiers are not even recognized!
    * Zapping PRAM helps, sometimes, but only for a short period of time.
    * No other traditional Mac fix seems to affect the issue (repair permissions, etc.)
    * The issue occurs regardless of whether or not any peripheral devices are attached to the system.
Perhaps unrelated, but interesting (and new!) to note:
    * The Bluetooth menu item reports that "Bluetooth: Not available", the Bluetooth System Preference pane is not visible, and System Profiler reports that "No information found" about Bluetooth.
    ---- END CLIP ----
I've yet to try resetting the SMC, or doing a clean install, but from the copious amounts of users who reported similar errors in the threads I linked at the start of this post, those options only sound marginally hopeful.
Some of these issues (like the weird eject key suddenly firing on its own) have been present for a little under a week, but the freezing is brand new. The only system-wide change I've made in the last week was installed the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1, which was successful (verified in System Profiler; my boot ROM version reads as MBP31.0070.B07).
So mostly I want to know if anyone else using OS X 10.5.2 is also experiencing this problem. Also, though I'm grateful I could actually use my built-in keyboard to type this message (even with occasional missed keyboard presses, GRRR!!!) my only reliable workaround is an external keyboard. Which is a decidedly annoying thing indeed.
    Help?!?
    Thanks!
    -Meitar Moscovitz
P.S. AUGH! Just as I was typing that last sentence the keyboard froze again! So I'm actually finishing typing this post via a VNC session. So, so, so so frustrating!

I wanted to post once again with additional information just in case someone else is also having similar problems. Unfortunately, I'm almost certain that this is probably bad firmware or bad hardware, not a software issue at this stage. Here's why.
KERNEL PANIC! Take a look at the backtrace and you can clearly see that the Trackpad is to blame. Also, in the system configuration report, not the boot ROM version string, which indicates that I have indeed updated to the latest firmware provided by the recent release of MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1.
Here's the Kernel Panic log and system configuration I reported to Apple:

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze randomly

My keyboard and mouse freeze up for 2-4 seconds at seemingly random intervals.  I could go for a couple hours without it happening, or like now, it has happened twice while writing this.  If I'm typing something when it freezes, nothing I type while it's frozen ends up showing up, but if I had hit a key right when it froze, it will repeat itself until I press something else after it unfreezes.  They keyboard and mouse both freeze at the same time, it's not one or the other.  It has nothing to do with standby like the topic below...it can happen right after I boot up or anytime thereafter.
My hardware is an eMachines M6805 laptop (upgraded to 2GB of RAM) and just a basic Dell USB mouse and keyboard.
I tried searching the forums, but the search box on here searches the entire web for some reason even if I tell it to search TechNet, so I apologize if this has already been answered.

I just had my Desktop freeze whilst I was using Media Player minimised to the taskbar.
I came back to my PC and couldn't use the keyboard or mouse. I plugged in a wired USB mouse and this did not work either. I then used the mouse and keyboard buttons on my MCE remote and still nothing happened, actually something happened as my hard drive
became very busy, but there was nothing happening on screen. I had to reboot to get back to normal operation.
I use a Logitech Bluetooth MX500 keyboard and mouse and have been having problems since I had Windows 7, but thought it was the keyboard and mouse at fault. This is the first time that I have encountered this problem, but I have had problems with the keys
sticking, very annoying when you're in Visual Studio and it goes and deletes a load of code for you because the backspace key was the one that stuck. The cursor also randomly jumps lines occasionally and inserts text where I don't want it. This wouldn't be
such an issue if I was a touch typist and could look at the screen whilst typing, but I am not and only realise the errors when I have finished typing.
Anyway, Mine is a custom built PC(all drivers and windows fully up to date) which ran XP with zero problems:
Gigabyte mboard and graphics card (Nvidia) with I5 processor and 4GB ram.
If this was a USB hub Powersave issue, then I would still expect the hub to wake up when a new device was pugged in, so I'm going to count that fix out.
I'm not sure that the freezing was a mouse/keyboard fault, I suspect that this is more a video driver fault as the computer did become very busy doing something when I used the MCE remote, it's just the screen didn't update to show what it was doing.
I should have looked at the taskbar clock to see if the time had updated, I'll do that next time if it happens again.
I've disabled the Power Save options for the hub that controls the mouse and keyboard, perhaps this will stop the keys sticking and jumping around when I'm typing in Visual Studio.

  • PE7 Memory Issues and Program Freezes Editing AVCHD

I am suffering recurring "low system memory" warnings and program freezes and "bombs" when trying to edit AVCHD video clips captured from my Sony HDR-S11 hard drive camcorder.
I just bought a brand new computer specifically for these editing chores. The system I have is WELL above the minimums specified in the PE7 documentation. I am running Win XP SP3 (clean installation on a 500 GB hard drive), Intel 9400 quad core processor, Asus P5KSE ATX motherboard, 4 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 3600 video card with 512 MB on-board processing, etc. I have installed only minimal software on the computer, intending to dedicate it primarily to Blu-Ray video processing.
My current project is about 1 hour and 27 minutes long. I have tried editing with both the "hard drive camcorder" and "AVCHD" full-HD presets for the project. While the AVCHD preset produces clearly better results - at least initially - by the time I reach approximately 1 hour into the import of my video clips to the Sceneline, problems begin to occur. They are usually manifested as a warning dialog box informing me that I am running low on system memory and should save my project and proceed with caution. I save what I was doing and then try to "cautiously" continue with the editing. If I click and hold on the taskbar slider to move either forward or backward in the Sceneline, I almost always get a hang-up of the program wherein it will not react to any keyboard or mouse inputs. If I persist, sometimes the program will momentarily revive but further attempts to edit often result in a spontaneous shutdown of the program wherein PE7 abruptly closes and I am taken directly to my desktop.
And during the times that I am able to edit, I have encountered the same kind of glitchy previews of my AVCHD source data that many others have reported on these forums. In scanning those threads, it looks like we are all out of luck on that one until Adobe comes out with an upgraded version of PE7.
I have worked through the Help Section procedures "Troubleshooting system errors and freezes in Premier Elements 7 (Windows XP)" with no improvement. Many of those checks do not apply to me since I basically started with a blank hard drive. I have no old codecs loaded. I have the latest drivers for my motherboard and video card. I don't have any fonts installed that did not come with Windows or PE7. I uninstalled and reinstalled PE7. My virus software (McAfee) is up to date and I performed a total system scan with no findings. Nothing has really helped me to be able to do stable and reliable edits of my source clips.
This is especially frustrating because I used PE4 for more than a year and NEVER had any freezes or bombs when editing HDV clips from my previous Sony HDR-HC1K taped-based HD camcorder. I thought that creating a capable video-dedicated computer would insure that I wouldn't have problems like these with AVCHD. Looks like I was mistaken again.

I couldn't agree more about the basic non-functionality of PE7 when it comes to handling large AVCHD projects, David. We were both taken in by our previous favorable experiences with earlier versions of PE.
My original problem came with a project similar to your own: lots of smalll files (clips) that added up to a large total project. The problems with memory shortfall occur when you pull a large number of clips from the Media window down to the project line. I had no trouble getting my 552 individual clips downloaded from my camcorder to the "Get Media" window. It was only when I dragged them down into my Sceneline that the wheels started to come off. With a great deal of patience and several reboots, I got my 552 clips loaded into my project but got into immediate and deep trouble when trying to edit the raw footage into final form. Apparently PE7 juggles the huge (in my case about 18 GB) file every time you try to do an edit and the manipulation of the big file is what eats up the memory.
As pointed out by earlier posts, AVCHD is efficient as a compression format for the raw video files but is extemely processor and memory-intensive when you try to edit a file with a lot of individual clips.
I certainly didn't know that I was biting off such a big piece of new technology when I bought my new Sony AVCHD camcorder. I don't think the shortcomings of AVCHD are very widely appreciated except by people who have confronted them head-on as you and I have done.
I fear that the solution for these difficulties will be beyond the scope of a patch by Adobe. Both you and I are using what should be a near-state-of-the-art computer with appropriate hardware and we are barely able to work on an AVCHD project. And, yes, converting your project files to MPEG format is a key part of a semi-workable solution.
The multiple project export method that I outlined above is unquestionably "cheesy" as you suggest but some vatiation on it is about the best you are going to do with AVCHD in PE7 for the foreseeable future.

  • When clicking on links that open in a new window, the links don't open and Firefox freezes in a way. I can navigate the page I am on but cannot click to open a new tab or bookmark.

When navigating the internet, if I come across a web page that has a link to open a picture or program in a new window, if I click on it, it does not open. Firefox immediately looses functionality in that I cannot open a new tab with the mouse wheel, right click to open a new tab, or use my bookmarks in either the drop down or toolbar to navigate away. I can usually still navigate the page that I am on, for example, (https://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/AppEntry/apply-online/appindex.jsp), when it freezes I cannot click on any of the content at the center of the page but I can still use the links from the list on the far left. For an example of the pictures, (http://www.insect-sale.com/), if you click on "New Arrivals" at the top of the page it takes you to a list of products that can only be viewed by clicking on them. Usually a picture of the item would open in a small window but it does not and Firefox freezes. This has also happen when I try a view a degree audit on a school's website where a program would usually open in a new window. The only thing I have been able to find that still functions properly when this happens is the home page button. I can click on it or use the wheel to open it in a tab just fine, but if I try and go anywhere else I cannot. The only way I can get Firefox back to normal is to use the Task Manager and end the process. Another thing I have noticed, that may or may not be related; is that my Norton Internet Security toolbar, that should show up below the bookmarks toolbar and above the tabs, only shows up about 1 out of every 10 times I open Firefox. Some days it doesn't show up at all. If it does show up and I log into Identity Safe, the autofill for the programed website works, even if the toolbar doesn't show up the next time I open Firefox.

    Go to Tools->Options->Apps
Here you should see two columns: Content Type on the left, Actions on the right.
Find and select excel spreadsheet or any other content type in the left column. There should be a corresponding action in the right column. What is it? You can use the drop-down list to select the option you want:
Always Ask - Firefox will ask each time: What do you want to do with this file?
Save file - Firefox will save this file to your computer
Use - Firefox will give this file to the program to open it
In case of saving, Firefox will either prompt you every time where you want the file to be saved, or save it to the default location. It depends on the preference in
    Tools->Options->General->Download

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze and randomly become unresponsive

    I've got a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011) running Mac OS X 10.8.2.
Since a few weeks ago at random intervals my keyboard and trackpad become permanently unresponsive. I don't recall any particular cause or change that would have caused this to start happening.
What happens is that the trackpad and keyboard will stop functioning completely. The computer, display etc. would continue to function properly:
    The clock keeps ticking.
If music were playing it would continue etc.
Internet connectivity (via an ethernet cable or WiFi) continues to work as well (a download will continue, and even resume if I disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable).
Presssing the power button will bring up the shutdown dialog as usual (but I can't use it, obviously, so a forced shutdown needs to be performed instead by holding down the power button longer).
.. but the keyboard and trackpad are rendered inoperable, as if they were no longer connected.
I've made no progress in finding out what could possibly be the cause of this. A few observations:
It has never happened while not using the keyboard (e.g. watch a DVD with TV series for a few hours, and afterwards the keyboard would always be fine).
It always happens while actively typing (e.g. while in the middle of replying to an e-mail).
It is not a temporary problem, the keyboard and trackpad will not become responsive again after some time (the computer isn't particulary occupied with calculating something big, no beachball and no busy mechanical noises).
It does not happen progessively. It works fine and snappy one second, and I'm touching a dead keyboard a split second later.
I tried connecting a USB keyboard but that doesn't seem to work either (I'm mentioning this since some of the linked threads below close with that as a solution).
Possibly related (although I haven't found anything in these threads):
Keyboard causes trackpad to not function properly
    Keyboard and trackpack freeze
    Keyboard and Trackpad Unresponsive
MacBook Pro Keyboard & TrackPad freeze! Totally Unresponsive!
MacBook Pro inbuilt Keyboard and Trackpad freeze when not connected to bluetooth devices?
I've crawled through some log files in /var/log (via the shell and through Console.app) and found a couple things that may be relevant, although they seem unrelated. Etiher way, I was surprised by what I found. All sorts of errors with regards to Bluetooth and USB stuff. I'm not aware of using either. I haven't used bluetooth in years and though I sometimes charge an iPod by USB, I haven't had any problems with that, and this keyboard/trackpad freeze has also happened on sessions where I started the laptop and never even touch the USB ports in the time leading up to the freeze.

When i disconnect my iPod 2nd Gen from my laptop, its display goes off and working freezes. Please help me.

The computer freezes?  There may be something wrong with the USB port.  If the laptop has more than one port, does this happen on any port?  If you are disconnecting the shuffle cable from the computer, does it make any difference if you disconnect the shuffle at the other end of the cable first, then disconnect the cable from computer?  Or if you currently disconnect the shuffle from cable first, try it the other way.
You may be able to work around this problem, if you get a self-powered USB hub.  Something like this one
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
There are many choices, but be sure to get one that has its own power supply.  You can leave the shuffle cable connected to the hub, and connect the shuffle to the hub, instead of directly to the computer.  This may provide a "buffer" for whatever is causing your laptop to shut off when the shuffle is disconnected.  Since the hub has its own power supply, it will not rely on the computer for power to re-charge the battery.

  • Trackpad and Keyboard Freezes on my Macbook

I have a spring 2008 model macbook whose keyboard and trackpad will freeze when my macbook gets too hot. Usually before it freezes up the macbook will try, over the course of several minutes, to eject a CD even though there is no CD in the drive. Shortly after that the keyboard and trackpad freeze up.
I've taken it to the Mac Store and they ran the computer through a "stress test" but could not get it to have the same trackpad freeze as I did so they did not fix it. I have taken the battery out and that seems to help a bit but it did freeze up as I was writing this post and had to reboot.
Anybody know how to fix this on a Macbook (not macbook pro)? Thanks

My keyboard and trackpad freezes too. It seems to occur when screen dims. After I force the restart by holding down the power button, everything works again. But later, it will freeze again.
I have built-in keyboard and trackpad firmware version 1.0.1. No additional updates cued when this application is selected from the applications\utilities holder.
I am currently running Mac OS 10.5.6 on a White MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2Gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Plugging in an external mouse works during the freeze.
    Please help. Thanks

  • 10.7.5 suddenly slows and then freezes

My computer has just started to suddenly slow way down and then it freezes completely.  When I reboot it seems fine, for perhaps 10 minutes or half an hour, but then it starts to lock up again.  Any idea what the problem is?  Here is my EtreCheck report:

Well, I made it to the Apple store and they, contrary to the guys at B&H, confirmed my original suspicion and yours: that the drive was failing.  I bought a replacement drive and am restoring my time machine back up now.
I am a bit annoyed that the B&H guys got this one wrong but I have to give them credit for underselling me rather than overselling me; I do appreciate that.
Also worth mentioning is that the 3TB Seagate drive was less than 2 years old and is supposedly still under warrantee.  I am looking forward to seeing what kind of support I get from them.
So big thanks to you, Bob, for your very good suggestions.   The Apple community has come through strong for me and I appreciate it.

    Hi There!
The camera is a Panasonic Lumix. I don't have a USB card reader. I did try and different port although not a different cable.
I did remember one additional thing. I plugged my camera in at work to a PC. It was after that, when I came home, that the iPhoto wasn't working when I connected my camera to our iMac/iPhoto at home. I think this may have caused the problem.
    Cheers!
