OS X and Ubuntu sharing media folders on Macintosh HD?

I'm gonna install Ubuntu on my MBP and dual-boot. Have tried Virtualbox, but I want a native install after all.
I have a 250GB drive, and I thought I'd make an ext3 partition of 15GB to install Ubuntu on. What I'm unsure about is where Ubuntu should read/write media and documents. I believe OS X is fond of having the User folder on the same partition as the rest, so I thought maybe I could just mount my OS X /home with read/write support in Ubuntu, and let it work with the Documents/Photos/Movies/Music-folders there.
Do you see any pitfalls with this? As long as it's mostly media and stuff I access, I shouldn't screw up permissions or other stuff for OS X, I hope/think.

we have a problem.....
another solution - buy a hard drive and a usb external enclosure (not an external hard drive).......
take your old hard drive out and install it in your usb external enclosure.
install your new hard drive in your macbook.
connect your usb external to your macbook's usb port.
power up your macbook and keep your finger in the option key until you see the apple logo....
you'll get a boot menu, choose your external drive as the boot drive - when ML installer pops up, direct it to install it in your new hard drive....
once the install is done, restart your macbook and open migration assistant and use that to bring your files and apps from your bad hard drive over...

  • Sharing 2 folders, each from different Users, simultaneously

    Hi,
I'm trying to share certain folders of two different users (on one computer) simultaneously, but am running into an error. I'm hoping someone here can help.
On our Mac Mini (10.4.11) there is a folder (in user account "A") that is shared with everyone in our studio. Each of them has a link to it on their Finder window sidebar so they connect to it effortlessly anytime. I just set up a second user account (user "B") on the Mini to share one of B's account's folders with only a few people here (It's some admin type stuff that not everyone should have access to.) I placed a similar link in the Finder sidebars of the few people who may access that folder.
I have tried the connections and each works fine individually, but I cannot seem to connect to both folders at the same time. If I am already connected to one of the folders, then trying to connect to the other one gives the error message "Mount Failed. Unable to mount the volume "<other user account>". I need it to work such that those people here who are allowed access to the admin files (in User B) can get to them without having to unmount the User A folder.
I'm guessing this is a permissions related issue, but I'm not sure, and despite having searched around a fair bit, I haven't found a solution.
    Thank you in advance...
    -Neil

    Thanks for the tip.
Oddly enough, I've got Sharepoints though I wasn't finding that I needed it for the basic sharing I was doing. However, I've set it up now and have shared the folders normally. Each folder is accessible, but again, not simultaneously. I am now looking into setting up Groups. I will try what you have recommended...
Hmm. I think I'm getting part way there, but certainly not all the way, since I'm still get the same result as my original post. Evidently I'm not getting something right:
What I've done in Sharepoints is made 2 new Groups, A and B. For Group A I've added (using SP's big + button) the User that has the folder everyone can get to. For Group B I've added the User whose folder everyone can get to plus the User whose folder one a few people should be able to get to.
Then, still in SP, over at the "Normal shares" tab, I clicked "Show File System Properties". For the folder everyone can get to, I've set the Group drop-down menu to Group A (and pressed "Update Share") For the folder only a few can get to, I've set the Group drop-down menu to Group B (and pressed "Update share"). Having done all this though, I'm still not able to (as a Group B user) get to both folders simultaneously.
Am I missing a step or setting somewhere?
    Thanks,
    -Neil

  • I have shared some folders and trying to connect from my android

i have shared some folders and trying to connect from my android(using esf file manager) and when I want to connect it asks my user name and password. Where can i find them on mac?
i have tried to enter my mbp name and my password but it doesn't work.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.

Probably because they don't accept that media.
Try using Verbatim DVD+DL (if your project exceeds 2 hours) or Verbatim DVD-R if it doesn't.

  • Keeping two iTunes Media Folders (and libraries) in sync

    Hi all,
Here's my situation... I can't be the only person looking for an answer to this. (Can I?)
At home I have a Mac Mini with my music collection on it managed by iTunes. I have the same at work. I also have Chronosync set up to nightly syncronize my iTunes Media folders. Obviously, this is just step one.
What I'd ultimately like is to be able to change files or add media at either location (through iTunes) and not only have the files moved by Chronosync but also have the iTunes libraries updated. Is there a way to do this via AppleScript or some other solution? I looking to keep two iTunes Media folders mirrored and have iTunes' library be updated at the same time (or on a regular basis).
    Thanks in advance!
    A

It sounds like a question for whoever wrote Chronosync.  I have never heard of it and have no idea what it is or what it does.  Generally you ask questions related to third party software on the software's own support forum.  What you need it to do is synchronize the whole iTunes folder, not just media files.  The library.itl file contains most of the actual playlist and content data but things also get updated in the artwork folder, and some other files (mostly also in the iTunes folder).
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660

Where are my iTunes files located? - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
Apple's solution is to have you buy all your music from Apple and use the automatically download new purchases set on both computers.  Of course it isn't a complete solution. For example, if you change the rating on one computer it won't change it on the other since all you're doing is downloading a file from a third place (the store) to both other places (computers).

Yes, that is correct. The organizer is just a database, so your photos are wherever you put them intially. Did you import from iphoto? In that case, organizer does make duplicates (to avoid writing into the iphoto library, which would be a Bad Thing to do). If you didn't specify a location, the copies that PSE uses will be inside subfolders in the Adobe folder in your Pictures folder.

  • Time capsule as a shared media drive and USB backup question

I sincerely apologise if this has been answered in a different form elsewhere but I am struggling to get the exact answer I need.
I am planning to use my Time Capsule 1TB as a shared media drive at home. I have a G5 running Leopard and an MBP running the same. I want to be able to have a shared iTunes and iPhoto library and, from what I understand, this is a reasonable way to do it.
My question relates to the back up of the Time Capsule. I have ordered a 1TB LaCie USB drive which I am planning to have permanently connected to the TC for backup purposes. Can I set-up the TC to use Time Machine to "mirror" itself to the USB drive? Is this something that either the MBP or the G5 will have to be set-up to do?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Thank you in advance.

No. Time Machine cannot back-up any network drive, including your Time Capsule's internal HD.
There is an "archive" facility, but it's inconvenient, to say the least. See #Q6 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Aperture 3.0.2 or Keynote 5.0.3 Bug:  Sharing Media

I was replacing a graphic in Keynote '09, sharing media from both iPhoto and Aperture. There was an image I wanted to use from Aperture. When I looked at it, I discovered the image was crooked, so I straightened it in Aperture. When I tried to bring it into my Keynote presentation using the media browser, the image did not appear, either as an icon or as a list item. I then modified another image in Aperture, and it too became no longer available through the media browser.
I recreated both thumbnails and previews for the entire Aperture project in which the images were located, but to no avail. The two images remained unavailable through the media browser. I closed both applications, reopened Keynote, and still the images were not available.
I saved the Keynote presentation to a different name and closed it. When I reopened this newly saved version of the presentation, the images from Aperture were now available through the media browser.
Somewhere between Aperture and Keynote, media are not being properly shared/maintained. The current workaround is fine, but something is broken between these two apps (and probably affects others too).
    Hope this helps someone!

Thanks for the heads-up. For those too lazy to click through, here is the list of changes:

  • What can I use to get shared media across OSes on my local network?

    Hey guys,
My family is getting a new home entertainment center and I've thrown together a PC from spare parts around the house to put behind it and I'd like to know if there's a program out there that would allow me to gather shared media across the local network (everyone else in my family uses Windows...mainly Vista   :-/ ).  If not, is there any other way I can access the shared media (short of putting Windows on the PC of course)?  I tried searching, but I couldn't seem to come up with anything.
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, so I've been working with Samba today, and I believe I have it working properly.  However, I can't seem to access any shared files/folders on machines that have Vista on them.
When I run smbtree, I get this output:
    \\HOMEMEDIA
    \\WINXPCOMP
    \\VISTACOMP1
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:445
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:139
    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP1<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    \\VISTACOMP2
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.105:445
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.105:139
    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP2<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    \\WIN7PC
I'm not really sure what to do here.  I've tried changing around settings in the smb.conf file, but I'm not really sure what exactly it is that I'm doing for every option.  Also, smbtree sometimes won't output a tree at all and it will just hang.  I'm quite confused, any suggestions on what I should try?
Also, one of my Windows 7 PCs won't show up on smbtree.  I can ping it though...maybe it's not on the right workgroup?
EDIT:  I was able to fix the problem with my second Windows 7 computer, apparently I had to change from 128-bit encryption to 40/56 bit encryption, then smbtree was able to pick up on it.

  • Can anyone help me, I work on my mac air most days and would like certain folders to automatically update onto my iMac when i return home, is there a way of doing this? Many thanks.

Is there a simple way of linking the same excel folder on my imac and mac air, so as the one on my imac would automacily update when i return home, from the mac air? Fairly new to all this, so any help would be appreciated.

Open a Finder window and you should have a folder called iClouDrive in your home folder. Drag your documents or folders you want to share into this folder and it will be available on your other computer (look in the same folder).
As already mentioned Dropbox is a good solution; however, I like to use my free 5 GB from Apple's iCloud because I am not using very much space there. I reserve my Dropbox for other uses such as family photo and recipe sharing.
    Good luck!

  • Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

    Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
    User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
    User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
    sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

  • Merging libraries and home sharing

What is the most efficient way to consolidate and share a library consisting of music from two Apple IDs?
Our setup is this: My husband and I each have our own iTunes accounts, plus we have imported our own CDs to our respective libraries. I have a Mac laptop with limited space; he has an HP Touch/Vista with lots more space, plus we have a TimeCapsule that is also our wireless router, and we both have iPhones. We'd like to have all our music in one place at home, not on my laptop, and be able to access all of our music and sync any of it to our iPhones (I am ok with only syncing at home when I am connected to the network, if need be), and to be able to buy new music on any of the computers or iPhones and ultimately have it sync back to the main library. What is the best way to do set this up, and what do we have to do to maintain it?
Before iTunes 9, I tried third party syncing solutions combined with putting everything on the TimeCapsule and having both iTunes libraries set to TimeCapsule. However, the connection to TimeCapsule is not always available (have to re-login), and rather than giving an error when it's not available, iTunes just reverts to a local library, which defeats the purpose. So, it seems like we need to have a main library resident on the HPTouch (periodically backed up to TimeCapsule) and then do Home Sharing to give me access via laptop (without necessarily copying everything to it, only what I want at the moment) -- but then, how do we handle the two Apple IDs? If we authorize each other's computers to use music from either ID, will I be able to see (via home sharing on my laptop) the whole "main" library all at once when I log in with either ID? Or will I still have to login (via home sharing) with two separate IDs to see the music corresponding to each? Or am I making this too complicated?

Update: it seems to have worked to do this:
    1. Authorize both computers to use both of our IDs.
    2. On both computers, use one ID (in this case, my husband's) to start home sharing.
    3. On my husband's (desktop) computer, in iTunes, view all music not on that computer, select all and copy to library, so that the whole combined music library is now contained on his computer.
    4. Export my playlists and import to his iTunes (I put his playlists and mine in separate folders for ease of use).
The latter step makes it possible for my smart playlists to grab everything in the library (which resides on his computer), and that playlist is still accessible on my laptop via home sharing, without my having to have all the music in the playlist reside on my laptop.
Now I should be able to empty out my library if need be (to save room on my laptop), and only load up the songs for the playlists I want to have mobile access to -- just click on a playlist via home sharing, and tell it to copy all the music from the desktop that I don't have on my laptop.
