OS X can't read SD card/kernel panic, windows XP or Vista

I'm using my friend's camera. It comes with an SD card. I tried to upload the photos to my macbook but every time i hook it up, i instantaneously get a kernel panic. On my brother's macbook, nothing happens. Literally nothing. He doesn't get a kernel panic, but it doesn't even mount.
On my dad's laptop, which is a PC, everything's ok. It shows up without problems.
What gives??

I don't have the camera with me right now but first of all, I really doubt manufacturers of cameras also make the SD disks. Second of all, and I'm less sure about this, this seems to be a problem with my laptop and OS X, not the disk itself.

What Mac OS are you running (from "About this Mac" in your Apple menu).
Codecs are usually required for viewing videos and should not affect whether the USB drive mounts. Can you tell us what kind of file your are trying to run from the USB drive? The pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers are no longer supported by most modern codecs

    Hi
Can you notice yellow exclamation mark in device manager?
Normally the Satellite L40 can read SDHC cards up to 8GB so my question is have you tried different brands of SDHC cards?
I have good experience with Kingston and SanDisk cards.
Furthermore you should check the Toshiba website for an update of the card reader:

Last but not least have you installed all Service Packs and Updates for Windows?

You can buy a USB SDHC reader that plugs into your USB ports. Looks a lot like a flash drive. Other than that, your only option is to get an external card reader. If you have Windows XP, you will likely need a Microsoft patch to enable SDHC card support.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It is possible you got a faulty card, or that the card was not properly seated, or that it doesn't have enough space in the slot to stay cool with other items in the slots. Try eliminating the latter as a possibility if you have additional PCI cards. Also if you have no other PCI cards, try changing slots to see if the slot on the Mac Pro is damaged. If all yield bad results, did you happen to migrate your data from a PowerPC Mac with the Migration Assistant? That can cause bad drivers to get migrated, and if there was a fiber channel card driver for the old Mac, it might be causing problems.
If not, then I'd assume you have a bad card, and I'd replace it.

  • Can someone help decipher this kernel panic for me?

This has been happening too much lately- several times an day, or more when i get busy, it seems. I thought it might be bad memory or bad video card. the guys at the computer shop did an Apple video card and memory test and said it's fine.
Can someone read this and tell me what's going on? Thanks and sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

That's what i thought it was, I had them check for this and they ran 3 tests from an Apple AST diagnostic server, on the hardware. and said it passed. Including the one for the defective graphics card.
It seems to be triggered 99% of the time when I am in firefox doing a right click on "copy image" or sometimes when i hover over a hyperlink.

I work for the NHS.  Have spent most of my salary on Adobe Premiere Pro using a Intel Core Mac OS 10.5.8 which is supposed to be enough for the system requirements.  Have spent all day shutting down my computer unable to start the software.  If it does start it freezes and tells me to restart.  This is not acceptable.  Can anyone help??? Adobe cefrtai nly don't want to is there ahtyone out there with any solutions?  I ahve checked the hard drive it is fine, have done all the usual checks to no avail. Cannot find anywhere to talk to Adobe, their website is a minefield of Groundhog Day!
I have the same problem with Photoshop purchased last year as part of a creative package.  This is really annoying!

The software versionas are as follows.
    Adobe Photoshop CS5 version 12.0.4
Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 version 5.5.0
I hope that is more use.  As I said, the software is successfully installed, but I cannot open Premiere Pro.  Photoshop does open occasionally but rather like Russian roulette.
I also have the Creative suite and Dreamweaver is no problem, neither is Indesign.  This makes no sense to me I would be grateful for any help.  I have checked the hardware and the system is ok.  I have tried re-installing the software after un-installing it but that made no difference.  I obviously have turned the machine on and off because of the black veil that descends upon the screen during the kernel panic.  Premiere Pro has alo frozen everything rather than causing a panic too. HELP!

  • Recovery session canceled due to errors. Can't start DB after kernel panic.

    Hi all,
I have a cluster Oracle 10 DB that was incorrectly shutdown (node 1 got a kernel panic when I disconnected the cluster interconnect and after a while node 2 also had a panic).
Now the DB doesn't start and I already tried an endless loop of solutions that don't work and lead me right to the start. I was hoping someone could help me fix this bloody thing please. This DB was running in archive log mode.

I also saw the "_allow_resetlogs_corruption". But I would like to leave this as last resort.
    Thanks in advance

Thank you everyone for the advices. I used this tutorial to implement the allow reset logs corruption, but still it didn't allow me to startup the DB normally without errors or recover the datafile 86.

  • Can't deal with these kernel panics... Should I cave and buy a new SSD?

    Specs: OSX.8.2 / ADATA SX900 256GB SSD / 15in Mid-2010 MBP / No longer under AppleCare
    Problem: Intermittent kernel panics
    What I believe:
    - Source of issue is SSD
         - Took laptop to Apple and 3rd party Apple Certified Specialist, both showed clean ext hardware tests except for SSD, but could not pinpoint issue.
         - Problem travels with drive from body to body.
    - ADATA Firmware/Sandforce SSD does not play with OSX.8.2
         - Kernel panics are not patterned. Never point to specific recurring processes/threads... almost always background/native operations (windowserver, Finder, iTunes, etc). Never during overheating or high graphics/CPU stress. Rarely—but not never—during 3rd party operations.*
    - It is NOT my RAM
         - Reset PRAM, no change.
         - Memtest clean.
Other things I have done to try to be proactive:
    - Clean re-install of OS.
    - Erased disk, partition. Repaired both before reinstall of OS.
I am still experiencing the kernel panics and it is making it impossible for me to work. Should I cave and buy an OCZ SSD? Thanks in advance.
*I am not pretending to be an expert at deciphering panic/thread crash reports, but I believe I have done enough research to get the gist and to have seen a pattern if there were any. If you would like me to post my most recent reports, I would be happy to!

  • MBP can't find SSD after kernel panic

I installed a Crucial  M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm drive using an Other World Computing adapter into my MacBook Pro back in October.  It has been working very well until yesterday.  I typically leave my laptop on and just close the case.  When I opened it yesterday, a kernel panic message came up and after a few seconds the machine rebooted to my internal hard drive and I was able to continue working.  The SSD just had my applications and system so my work materials (docs, etc.) are OK.  However, the machine can "see" the SSD drive.  I have tried Disk Utility and Drive Genius with the same result.  Before I start opening the MBP, can anyone suggest other steps to take?  I have the system backed up to Time Machine.

    Mandy:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are you able to boot from the install disk or the Apple Hardware Test disk?
If so, boot from the install disk and Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Then boot from the AHT disk and run all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests.
    Good luck.

  • Can someone translate this short kernel panic report for me?

I got this after my internet suddenly went down (Safari stopped loading pages, but my Adium messenger was still working). And then, I think, the internet for my area went down (snow storm) and I'm hoping this kernel panic had something to do with that and not with defective hardware. Here it is below:

  • MX Revolution USB Receiver can't be removed without Kernel panic

On my MBP 17", I can not remove the Logitech's MX Revolution USB Receiver without having a Kernel Panic ! I am using the last LCC 2.1 under OS X 10.4.7. I fixed authorizations after the installation. I did test with all three MBP USB ports. I tried without the mouse on and off. It's always the same thing... Grey... Boom... Shutdown.
I tried the same thing with a MBP 15" running LCC 2.1 under OS X 10.4.7, the Kernel Panic did not show up ! ? !
    Any idea ?
    Cyberlolo

As an update, I'd like to report a similar behavior on my PowerBook G4 running 10.3.9, with the difference that this does not occur every time. I've had two kernel panics and the only thing in common is that I had turned the mouse off before pulling the USB receiver. The applications mix was different although some applications might have been the same on both occasions. LCC 2.1.1.

  • My CDROM can`t read some dvd after changing windows

hi,i have hp probook 450 g1 , i had windows 8.1 but i had some problems so changed my windows and install windows 8.1.1 i install all of my drivers but after i change my windows the CDROM can`t read some DVDs specially DVD9 and the sound of CDROM is changed and it`s strange for such this DVD that it can`t read it reads them some times , but most of the time can`t read , it make me crazy , please help me

    Hi Yolanda,
the error message is inside a popup: (French trnaslation) "Windows media Player encountered an error and will close." I have the choice beetween "CLOSE" and "HELP ON THE WEB".
Of course the "help" is totally useless....
I don't see any troublshooter related to "media player". The only troubleshooter where I can choose Media player is for the "compatibility mode", so it's not helpful. On the "audio and devices" troubleshooter I see "read
a DVD with Windows Media Player", but that's not my case.
I've already done the last step. I copy the MP3 from my second computer to the "problematic" one, and I can't read my file. But, on the second computer, i can read this MP3 so the issue is ONLY when I try to read this file with my Windows session.
(in the same computer, with the administrator session, I can read all the files).
To put it in a nutshell:
on computer A logged as CEDRIC i can not read the mp3 called SUPERSONG (it's an example lol)
on computer A logged as administrator, I can read the SUPERSONG
on computer B logged as CEDRIC (other local account but same name) I can read the SUPERSONG mp3 that is present in the music Library (that is not the same file, but it's a file with the same name, and of crouse this is the same song). (all my MP3 are copied
from computer A to computer B in case of failure on one of the computers)
on computer A logged as CEDRIC, if I do a
\\computerB\c$\...\SUPERSONG I can not read it.
I know this is complicated to explain, but if I ask to the Microsoft community that is because I don't know what to do ;) ;) ;)
