OS X completely fails to boot

Hi there.
I've really screwed up my MacBook Pro. Post installing Quicktime 7.1.1 as part of a software update, I found that I wished, albeit temporarily, to revert to 7.02. Obviously, I wasn't going to be allowed to install that, so I figured I'd just use Pacifist to force an install, as I've done in the past for other software that refused to install for whatever reason (never Apple software though...could be the problem).
So, did that. Attempt to open Quicktime. Bounce, bounce, icon disappears. Hmm. Attempt to open System Preferences. Bounce, bounce, nothing. Oh dear.
I then downloaded the .dmg for QT 7.1.1, but it just refused to mount, so I then shut down the computer and restarted. OS X now completely refuses to boot, it gets as far as very slowly filling the blue bar at the OS loading screen, but then does nothing.
I've so far attempted to boot into safe mode by holding Shift as I boot up, but that just results in the MacBook reminaing on the spinning icon and the grey Apple logo till I release the key (after a good few minutes), and then it just tries and fails to boot OS X again normally.
I've also put my OS X install/recovery disc in the drive and booted from that, repairing the disk (it found no problems...awesome) and disk permissions (I'll admit I never thought that that would do anything anyway). Both failed to help, obviously.
Any ideas what I could do? I'll be gutted if I have to wipe my HDD and reinstall OSX; I'm guttered there's no rollback/restore feature on Macs, something I always found useful in these situations back when I used Windows.
Any replies are greatly appreciated.
Joe

You can re-install without losing most of your settings and without losing documents / files (unless something goes severely wrong).
Archive and Install will allow you to re-install while saving all your documents and files.
You can read about this technique here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Once you have re-installed, you can then upgrade your OS to 10.4.6 and QuickTime to 7.1.1
You really are not going to want to run a version of QuickTime prior to 7.1.1 on your system. Read the following documents for more information:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303176
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303787
The Archive and install is probably your best option at this point.
Hope this helps.

[ HP laptop 8510w with P/N  KE186ET#ABE running on Win XP Pro SP3 and only that - no dual boot or otherwise tweeked boot block on that machine]
     Hi all !
    - my 1st post here.
Laptop started heating up seriously about 30 months ago. Symptoms were:
    - fan at top speed continuously very soon after boot and
    - heat being extracted from that small box was such that I could not keep my hand before the fan outlet or on top of it, touchiing the box  more than 5 s. That meant temp was well above 75ºC. Imagine hacking away on your keyboard and suddenly crying out loud because you got yr hand burnt.
4 nights ago (literally during the night), my laptop called it quit.
It has not booted since. Nothing happens when I turn it on, except for the ironical fact that the fan seems to work wonderfully and the power supply LED is on. I also hear it try to access both the internal HD and the CD/DVD drive at about 4 s intervals.
Naturally my warranty has long expired.
    I have tried:
    - hooking it up to an external screen and powering it up to see if something appeared there. Nothing.
    - booting from a CD ROM. Nothing.
    - reseating memory modules, internal SATA HD, keyboard, tracking pad, even the RTC CMOS 3V battery and WLAN module, taking everything that I could take off and reseating it after checking for any visual defect. More nothing.
BTW, I have been working steadily with one and only one OS on that machine, Win XP Professional SP3.
    One more detail:
I had reformatted and completely reinstalled my OS about 2 months ago, after I had noticed certain unpredictability such as hangs and so on.  That seemed to fix the hangs but absolutely not the overheating.
Due to overheating my machine had had a constant history of calling it quit in the middle of anything, in particular during the summer months and when I had the video module working.  But that was normal. The thermoswitch just did its job ...  until four nights ago.
I suspect that the motherboard has a faulty component or worse due to the heat generated ? Can it be repaired ?
Has anybody a clue about such a zombie case ? Any help appreciated.
    Cheers.

    This question was solved.

Well it is not really a zombie case. You got 2 and a half years out of an overheated laptop. I would say the old girl gave it her best shot. Probably what it needed a couple years ago was to be opened up and have the processor area/heatsink/fan cleaned out and new thermal compound. At this point I think you are looking at a motherboard replacement. It is a bit old but it was very advanced when new so is still a desireable computer. This is the Service Manual:
    Service Manual
This is the part number for the motherboard assuming you have only WLAN and not also WWAN:
    452218-001
Here is one on eBay, shipped from China, but reasonably priced at $80:

There are many others on eBay for about the same price. Let us know if you need any more information or help.

    Hello all,

My laptop: HP laptop 8510w with    P/N  KE186ET#ABE

A month ago, my laptop called it quit.
When I switched the laptop on, the screen does not come alive and nothing at all happens. The power led is on and the span spins, but nothing else.  (see previous post for more details - 10-28-2013 11:33 AM)
So.... I took the machine apart (very entertaining), bought a new system board and put the new syst-board in place along with everything else.  Same !
Can anybody help and suggest the next step ? Is it the processor ?
Is it the video chip module ?
    Is it something else ?
-- How can I best proceed (short of throwing the whole lot out of the window) ?
    Thanks to all.

Nope, this does not help at all.
I sure don't understand the rationale behind your automated reply.
Beside isn't this supposed to be a forum ? With real people behind posts and replies ?
    - In what way(s) is this post different from any other one on this board ?
    - What do you mean by "This is a commercial product" ?
    - Aren't all HP laptops and hardware components commercial products ?

  • Recovery Media Fails To Complete - in infinite boot loop

We have an older laptop that got so little use it looks almost like it was just out of the box. The owner wanted to have it set back to factory default. It came with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The laptop was a fully functioning laptop, with no issues.
The owner ordered recovery media from HP. She received the disc set. She indicated that there was nothing on the PC she wanted.
I began by attempting a restore from the recovery partition. In short order, the restore failed and it would not boot. So I jumped to the use of the recovery medai and ran the system recovery. I took about 2 hours, and when done, said it was complete, and it rebooted.
All looked normal, windows logo, then a white/silver screen. A few black windows open and close too fast to see what they are, and it reboots. Seeing this was an infinite loop, it trued invervening using a windows 7 Pro USB Flash Drive to get to where I could do a system repair. Repeatedly did system remair, and it would not work.
Started over... same result 6 times! A week later, here I am looking for help.
I was able start the laptop with the USB Flash Drive to the system repair screen. I was able to use the "load drivers" button to actually allow me to see the C and D Drives. The C Drive has four or five folders, the D Drive looks like it was the drive the system was preparing as a C drive - all the right folders. That all said, there seemed nothing I could do to find the source of the loop while being able to browse the files on the C and D drives...
One would think that the HP provided discs would restore the laptop so long as there is no hardware issues. NOT!
I have scanned the internet for like issues and tried about 9 different 'remedies' with none of them working.
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Hello Malygris1
The laptop user had asked me to return it to factory default. I did attempt to restore from the restore partition, using recovery manager. This apparently failed, as afterwords the laptop would not boot, and booting from a bootable USB Flash Drive within Windows 7 Pro install on it failed to accomplish a successful start-up repair.
So, I had the recovery media from HP in my hands by then - no worries right?
The recovery media warned me that the hard drive partitions would be removed and re-created. Since I was alreay in a situation where I could not boot, I went with the full factory restore.
Seemed to go as predicted until after the 2nd reboot, where I got the message that the recovery was complete. At the next reboot, the boot loop began (as described in my opening post). I have removed the hard drive, tested, created a partition, retested - and also used the hardware tests during startup. Both memory and hard drive test out as OK.
I have tried several boot loop solutions, but the one you mentioned gets to steps 11-13. I do not have ALL of the folders listed. It warns you that if there are 0 bytes, to stop and pursue another solution. No folders trumps that...
I have found the C Drive, and the D Drive by usint the Install Drivers button (which gives me a temporary way to browse the drives.
After the recovery says it is complete and I boot to the USB Flash Drive, and use start-up repair, then using the load drivers button, here is what I see:

  • Random I/O errors (hdd) and failing to boot, Windows not affected

I'm experiencing lots of I/O errors when booting and running my Linux partition. I am dual booting Windows 7 (x86_64) and Arch Linux (i686) on a single HDD.
Im using a Lenovo Ideapad G505s with a Seagate ST1000LM HDD and an SDD currently not in use.
    Partition layout:
    NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
    sda
    ├─sda1 ntfs System Reserved D8B40750B4073094
    ├─sda2 ntfs 00EA107FEA107360
    └─sda3 ext3 b753e7d2-6a23-4c20-8fa7-bf281a4a09e4 /
    sr0
All three are primary partitions. Using ext4 yields the exact same result.
The problem is easy to reproduce:
Install Windows 7 to first half of HDD and Arch on the second half
At first Arch works fine but over the next couple of days increasingly more I/O errors show up and at some point the system fails to boot
Windows seems to work just fine

I don't recall when this error first showed up, and I unluckily deleted my journal before noticing the problem, for it was getting big, so I can't trace back. But I have it in the journal since then (11.september). At begining only from time to time, but now things are getting worse.

  • IBook G4 fails to boot with internal HD installed, works when removed

The short version: My iBook started failing to boot via any method (gray screen) and the boot menu (Option during startup) would freeze. Replaced HD, things were better. Six months into new HD, nearly the same symptoms appear again. Removed HD, now running off different HD via FireWire.
    The long version–
Back in late 2008-12, my iBook started failing to boot up. Usually it would refuse to boot from any source. Booting the internal disk (10.4.11) would get to a gray screen without any logo and stay there. Holding down Option, the boot menu would come up, but it would usually freeze before it displayed any volumes. Booting from CD (AHT, or OS install disc) would fail in nearly the same way as booting from the internal drive. Target Disk Mode would start, but once the other machine tried to access the drive, the FireWire logo would stop moving and the drive would never show up on the other computer. Very rarely, the machine would get a bit further through one of the boot mechanisms, but it usually froze while booting or just after login.
This machine has gone through three logic boards in the past, so I suspected that was the problem again. I took it to a local Genius Bar and the Genius explained that it was probably the hard drive. He said that sometimes, depending on the way the drive fails, it can "take out" other parts of the system due to drawing too much current, etc.
I was a bit skeptical, but it was going to be much cheaper to replace the HD myself than it would be to send it in for a MLB replacement. So I ordered a new HD (80G) and a USB-to-ATA/SATA adapter. I hoped that I would be able to use the adapter to savlage a bit more data off the drive (it originally failed right before a backup!).
After extracting the HD (40G), I connected it to the USB adapter and was able to access the drive just fine. I used another machine to run another backup from the recently removed HD (40G) to one of my FireWire backup drives and proceeded to put the iBook back together with the new HD (80G).
Once it was all back together, the new HD worked fine. I was able to restore the recent backup from my FireWire drive to the internal, and it worked fine. The only oddity I noticed was that the new drive was apparently trying to sleep several times a minute. I used smartctl (installed via MacPorts) to adjust the power management setting on the drive, and that seemed to help. I also started running smartd (also via MacPorts) to better monitor the new drive.
Recently, a bit more than six months after the new HD was installed, the new HD started showing errors in the system.log. I never found any errors in the logs after the previous HD failed (even though I could look through the logs just fine with the drive attached through the ATA-USB adapter).

I did not notice the errors until the afternoon of the 7th when the problem became evident. The events around 13:00 happened when I was trying to run a backup. The first backup failed in an odd way (when I came back to check on it later that evening, SuperDuper! seemed to have quit running). So I restarted the backup and started looking around in the logs. That is when I noticed the kernel I/O error messages. When I asked smartctl to query the drive, it showed that many errors had been occurring and it displayed the drive's log of the last five or so errors (alas, I did not save this output). Meanwhile the re-run of SuperDuper! was having problems again. It seemed to have hung (no SDAgent or SDCopy processes were running, but the main UI was still there). Since the backup was not getting anywhere, I decided to shutdown for a while and try again later.
When I did try again later, I was back in the situation of six months ago. It would not boot at all (no internal, no FireWire, no CD/DVD, boot menu hangs, Target Disk Mode hangs). So, I opened up the system, removed the HD and put it back together without an internal HD. The machine is now able to boot and run from FireWire. Again, the (6 month old, 80G) HD "works fine" via the USB adapter. If SMART were available through the USB adapter, I could check to see if the drive is continuing to have problems. I used SuperDuper! to copy the HD to a volume on my FireWire drive which is how I an now running the system.
Has anyone had any similar problems? Any idea why my iBook seems to be killing/rejecting hard drives? (I say killing because, while the drive is connected internally, it certainly seems to be dying. I say rejecting because once the drive is out of the system, both the drive and the system seem to "recover".) I have read messages there where others report success having their iBook MLB resoldered ("reball"). Has anyone experienced substantially similar issues that were solved with a resolder repair?
    Thanks!

I was able to test my “failing” ATA drives in a G4 Mac mini (I had to take the mini apart because its drive had finally failed). I was able to successfully boot the Mac mini with either of my iBook drives installed. Once booted, +Disk Utility+ said that each one's SMART Status was Verified. I used smartctl to pull the full SMART info while I had them installed in the Mac mini.
Since the drives were still “good”, I think this emphasizes that the problem is with the ATA interface on my iBook's logic board. Maybe it is broken, or maybe it just needs to be resoldered. For now I am happy just booting off an external Firewire drive.
BTW, I ended up installing the 6 month old 80G drive in the mini. It has been working OK for 10 days now. As long as it continues to operate normally in the mini, it will serve as evidence that my iBook's HD ATA controller is borked. I just hope the ATA controller is more capable of accepting its fallibility than was HAL.
There is a minor problem with the 80G in the mini in that I am unable to use hdapm to change the aggressive head unloading that the drive suffers. I was able to adjust it with hdapm while it was in my iBook. I am able to adjust it with hdparm under Linux on the mini. Luckily the change I made while booted in Linux "sticks" after rebooting back into Mac OS X (I hear it will be lost if the drive is completely powered off though).

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Duke (2007) Fails to Boot

Folks, I have a unique and challenging problem that has exhausted my Arch Linux skills, and so I am now turning to you.
I have a vintage Pentium Pro 200 system (that’s 200 MHz folks! – 200 MHz 686 architecture – the original 686!), two CPUs, running a dual boot between Windows NT 4.0 and Arch Linux Duke (2007). It has 512 MB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive, partitioned up between Windows NT and Linux. I built this system new in 2007, hence the dated version of Arch.  It has run like a charm all these years, granted not getting that much use. After about a year of no use at all, I fired the system up last week to help with a little research for a blog post I was writing on networking Windows NT 4.0 and Mac OS 8.6. Windows NT 4.0 fired right up with no issue, and after I was done testing what needed to be tested I tried to boot over to Arch.
After a year of disuse, Arch unexpectedly and stubbornly refused to boot. The boot process started up just fine, but towards the end, it declared that it could not mount the root file system on the root device and took a kernel panic and stopped. My Arch skills have gotten a bit rusty in the last few years, but I dusted them off and went to work. My guess was a file system or superblock error. Arch wouldn’t boot, but I dragged out my trusty RIPLinux 2.9 Rescue Live CD and fired it up. It came right up and ran, and I was able to mount the Arch partition and view all the files… everything seemed to be there; it just wouldn’t boot. Windows NT 4.0 AND RIPLinux both boot and run on the machine, so the hardware is fine as well.
A little information on the disk layout. Windows NT 4.0 is in the first partition on the hard drive. The extended partition has a second Windows NT 4.0 partition (sort of a /home partition for Windows NT 4.0), followed by the main Arch partition (the one I am trying to boot), followed by a swap partition and then the largest partition, which I use to share data between Arch and Windows NT 4.0 (I have loaded an ext2/3 driver into Windows NT 4.0 and it happily accesses the Linux partitions on the box).
RIPLinux’s e2fsck did find some issues with the Arch partition and I had it repair them all. I checked again afterwards that all the files were still there, and they were. With the partition now known to be clean, and the superblock repaired from one of the backups, all should have been well. However, Arch still wouldn’t (and still won’t) boot.
RIPLinux has a kind of a chain loader function, so I had it attempt to start up Arch for me. However, this was flummoxed by the fact that Arch addresses all my hard drive partitions as /dev/sdax and RIPLinux addresses them as /dev/hdax. Hence, without a common language, it was hard to get the one to start the other. Still, using this function, I have been able to get a crippled version of Arch running on the machine again. No modules had been loaded, and so it couldn’t do almost anything, but there it was (and is), Arch Linux Duke, at the CLI level. From there, I can see all the files, I can move freely in and out of my user account and the root account, but I can’t make the thing actually boot properly.
If you have read this far, you are a trooper.  Summarizing what I know, the hardware is good, the file system is clean, the superblock is good, I can mount it cleanly from a live CD and I can chain load a crippled version of Arch. Here is the boot process blow-by-blow. When I try to do a normal boot, the Windows NT 4.0 loader passes control to the Lilo boot sector I have placed on hda1 (sda1 in Duke’s parlance). Lilo takes over, present a menu and when I select Duke, takes off. Arch Linux Duke starts to boot. It gets a good long way along, all the way along to:
    :: Loading udev events                [Pass]
    :: Mount root Read-only
    :: Checking file systems
    This is where it stops.
The next thing I see is:
    /dev/sda6
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else) then the superblock is corrupt and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
        E2fsck –b 8193 <device>
I then get a sort of character based splash screen that says
    **********FILE SYSTEM CHECK FAILED ****************************
    *   Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root file system
    *   is currently mounted read-only. To remount it read-write, type:
    *   mount –n –o remount,rw /.  When you exit the maintenance
    *   shell, the system will reboot automatically
    Give root password for maintenance
At this point, I give the root password and enter the maintenance shell as root. I typed in “mount” and the first entry I got back is
    /dev/sda6 on / type ext3 (rw)
This is exactly the root partition that the start up complains about. It is clearly there.  I can see it, I can walk around it… it is clearly there. Why won’t it boot? Despite the message, the superblock is fine – it passes every test e2fsck can throw at it.
At this point, I did a “e2fsck /dev/hda6 (which is how RIPLinux would have passed it into Arch” and it says it is “clean”. I suspect that the Superblock message is because Arch sees root as sda6, while RIP passed it in as hda6...
Deciding to see what Arch would be seeing as it tried to set things up in the boot sequence, I tried the following next:
    # mknod “/dev/root2” b 3 6
(“3” because RIPLinux refers to my hard drive as IDE, while Arch refers to it by major number “8”, which is SCSI. By the way, it IS an IDE drive – not sure why Arch insists on using the sdx nomenclature instead of hdx)
    Then I entered “mount /dev/root2 /mnt/hda6” and “ls /mnt/hda6”
All was well. I can make the node, I can mount it, and I can see the contents. All is clearly well, but something is clearly wrong enough that Arch can’t boot.
I am totally out of ideas. I have tried every trick I know and am out of tricks. I would welcome any insights as to what I could try to get this venerable Arch installation back on its legs.
By the way, the key section of the /etc/lilo.conf file (lest anyone want to know) is:
    image = /boot/vmlinuz26
       root = /dev/sda6
       label = ArchLinux-Duke
       initrd = /boot/kernel26.img
       read-only
I am stumped. Thanks in advance for any and all pointers you may be able to offer.

Folks, thanks for all your helpful comments, and I wanted to report back to you that I finally overcame the issue, and ArchLinux-Duke (2007) is once again executing flawlessly on my old Pentium Pro 200 system. I won't bother reporting here all the blind allies I went down as I tried to figure out what was wrong, but in the end, literally moments before I was about to give up and overwrite my Arch installation with a new Linux variant (antiX seemed well suited for such old and low power hardware), my attention was drawn to a note I had made in my files back in 2007 about a problem with similar symptoms. In that case, I had just deleted ZenWalk Linux from the hard drive (both Arch and Zen had been on the drive), and merged several partitions to make use of the newly free space. This had changed Arch's view of the drive lettering, and what had been its /dev/sddx root device was now /dev/sdcx. Arch failed to boot, throwing off the same errors I was seeing now. I wish I had recalled that note a month or so ago! It would have saved me a lot of work and a lot of frustration.
At any rate, as a last step, and testing the idea that maybe the drive lettering had changed for some reason, I repeatedly manually booted Arch, specifying root=/dev/sda6, then /dev/sdb6, then /dev/sdd6, and finally, /dev/sdc6. Eureka! Arch now considered itself to be on /dev/sdc6 whereas previously it had been on /dev/sda6. This got me part way there, but the boot failed at the filesystem check stage and threw me into root. I disabled the file system check in /etc/rc.sysinit and got farther. Then I cleaned up /etc/fstab to agree with the new sdc naming, and I was back on the air fully.
So, what had happened was that Arch had changed its view of the drive it was on from sda6 to sdc6. While I could not understand why this "sudden" change had occurred, at least I had a solution, and had Arch back up and running.
Trolling through the rest of my notes, I found the answer. In 2012, the Tekram SCSI card in the machine failed, and I ultimately replaced it with an Adaptec card. The Tekram card did not have a BIOS segment on it. The Adaptec card did. My guess is that this caused the two internal SCSI devices I have built into the system (Iomega ZIP and Jaz respectively) to be enumerated first, claiming the "sda" and "sdb". device names. That left "sdc" for the root device, and that is where Arch went next.  This is my guess anyway.
I should have caught this issue back in 2012, at the time, but from my notes, I can see that I tested the new card thoroughly using the  Windows NT 4.0 side of the machine, but never thought to bring up Arch as well. Hence, this problem lay dormant for two years, before I attempted to fire up Arch last month and blundered right into it.
It has not all been bad. I have learned more about the ext2 and ext3 file systems and superblocks in the intervening time than I will ever need to use. I have learned how to manually boot Linux on a machine whose BIOS is so old that it cannot address the disk cylinder that the kernel is on and I have completely refreshed the many general Linux skills that used to just flow from my finger tips. It has been a frustrating experience, but ultimately a successful and useful one.
Just wanted to let everyone know that this is now [SOLVED]. I would mark the post as such, but I don't see any obvious way to do that. Thanks again everyone.

  • Imac fails to boot - at all

    Hi,
I restored my imac using original disks and then updated the osx to current over the web. all fine so far. then restored the system (full disk image) from time machine to recover my data.  restore said it worked ok but when the machine restarted it failed to boot and i just get a list of script top left of screen saying launch faild, debugger called etc.  Then gray screen and grey box in middle of screen saying you need to restart the computer.  This i have done numerous times but it just does the same thing again and again.  More worrying is that the machine will not boot from original disks either.  Any ideas before I take it to the apple store?
    Thanks, Pedro

If the disk image or time machine backup was from a older version of OS X then what was currently installed restoring that image/TM backup may have corrupted the newer version of OS X.
I suggest you start over by wiping the drive completely, then Restore your Mac from that TM/Image backup and Then Upgrade to Mavericks.
You have the steps slightly backwards. The latest thing you should do is upgrade the OS to the newest version.

  • OS9 bootable G4 mac fails to boot with NI-DAQ4.9

We're going to use the OS9 bootable G4 machine with NI-DAQ4.9 driver. However, after the installation of NI-DAQ4.9 the G4 machine failed to boot up(Pure OS9 boot. Not classical environment). The error message said that address error occurred when the NI-DAQ was loaded during the icon parade.
We installed the OS completely newly without any other softwares and installed the NI-DAQ4.9 driver. So it must be difficult to account for the problem by any conflict with other inappropriate softwares. Minimum set of system extension plus NI-DAQ also caused the same problem.
Now I doubt the problem caused by the conflict of new G4 with NI-DAQ4.9 because other hardwares work OK (Other G3 or older G4 machines).
    If anybody ca

    NI-DAQ:4.9.4

First, we will want to make sure that you have the latest NI-DAQ driver that still supports C program. That driver should be v4.9.4 and can be found from the link in the previous post (or here http://www.ni.com/support/daq/mac/macversn.htm).
After verifying this, I would try to restart the computer without your hardware installed to check if it is a hardware/NI-DAQ configuration issue or if you just had a bad install of the software. If it still does not work without the hardware than you can attempt to uninstall/reinstall NI-DAQ v4.9.4.
Finally, the problem may lie with in a conflict with the extensions on your MAC. If you are familiar with troubleshooing MACs, then you can disable all but the core extensions and see if you can get the computer up and running

  • [SOLVED] "Filesystem check failed" during boot process

I was using XFCE on my netbook recently and clicked "shutdown".  It logged out to the command prompt and nothing happened.  Assuming that I'd clicked "logout" by mistake, I typed "pacman -Syu" to run an update...  And moments later it suddenly started the shutdown process.
Now, whenever I boot up, I see the message below.  I tried booting from a GParted CD to check the filesystems for errors, but none were detected.
Can anyone suggest what I might need to do to fix the problem?

I don't exactly know how I should "repair manually"...  I thought a filesystem check in GParted would have been enough...
lijpbasin wrote:You can boot the system using a archlinux live cd, and run fsck manually on every linux partition in the old system with options.
DON'T mount any of the filesystems before running fsck, or your data will probably be lost. If you want to check the partition information first, run fdisk -l with root privileges.
Thanks.  I tried booting from an ArchBang live CD last night and ran "e2fsck -pcv" on each partition.  The check completed, but the problem persists...  I just tried again using "fsck" as you suggested and got the following output (but the machine still fails to boot with the same error as before):

    e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)

As mentioned already, the reason it's failing is because the /dev/sdb2 partition is mounted before it can be fsck'd. What is this partition exactly (which filesystem, what's on it, mountpoint,...)?
I'm not overly familiar with the Linux boot process, but why would it suddenly be mounting this partition before fsck-ing it?  Even if it was mounted when the netbook shutdown, surely the boot process starts with all partitions unmounted...?  Anyway, the partition details from /etc/fstab are below.
    <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    /dev/sda1 / ext2 defaults,noatime 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /home ext2 defaults,noatime,user_xattr 0 1
    /dev/sdb2 /usr ext2 defaults,noatime 0 1
I'm (now) aware that mounting /usr as a separate partition is a bad idea and (having read the "Error when booting with the new initscripts" thread), I have told pacman to ignore updates to the initscripts package (until I figure out how best to work round or fix that issue).
Shark wrote:Write umount /dev/sdb2 in konsole or unmount partition in gparted by right click on problematic partition and click unmount. Than proced.
If I type "umount /dev/sdb2" at the prompt, I get the following error:
    umount: /usr: device is busy.
(In some cases useful info about processes that use
the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1))
I tried "umount -l /dev/sdb2" to unmount when the device becomes free... but it never does.
I also booted into GParted, but there is no option to "unmount" /dev/sdb2.  There is a "mount" option in the menu, but it is greyed out.  If I open a terminal window from the GParted Live environment and type "sudo umount /dev/sdb2" I get the following message:
    umount: /dev/sdb2: not mounted
DSpider wrote:Are you mounting the root drive with "ro" (read only) in fstab?
No (as shown above).  I don't *think* I've messed anything up with fstab or any other config files -- everything was working perfectly till the netbook shutdown whilst pacman was running.

  • T61 fails to boot up!!

i have a T61, with Vista HP last week my t61 failed 2 boot up, giving me a Blank Black screen, no BSOD.  I restarted my laptop and then the same.  After that i went 2 thinkvantage RR mode and decided not 2 do anything without searchin online first.
Various suggestions were given. Del pcmcia.sys etc. but i decided to restore my VISTA. Now even the Blue Thinkvantage button does not work. i just want 2 restore my laptop, even if it means to restore to factory settings.. I used LiveCD and data is still there on the Harddisk. i have taken back-up of all the data.
Can some one help me to 1 restore my laptop 2 factory settings, 2 Restore MBR so that the laptop is functional again ( i retired fixboot and different options, but nothin) PS: i have a service vol in my hdd worth 6.8GB. but i cant run anything from there. Finally i was able to go into Rescue and Recovery Thinkvantage technologies
All thnx to Mr.??? ( i forgot 2 write it down) to giving this solution.... i have yet 2 re-install vista on my system....
will try different things before i JUMP to format and re-install vista....
Try the following if your system cannot boot 2 thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery....
The Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette solves this problem.
But for those without a floppy drive, I've created a CD image (ISO) of the diskettes, using a PC with a floppy drive andMagicISO (here's a nice tutorial on how I did it).
    Like the above link says:

Here are the download links (these ISOs were made at the 28th of January of 2007 - check if these really are the latest versions of the repair diskette):

    http://rapidshare.com/files/89450908/rnr40_rrd_fixed.iso
Now burn the ISO image to a CD (using Nero, MagicISO, etc.) and restart your computer with the CD in the drive.
Note: Install the Rescue and Recovery software, before restoring the partition.
When booting from the CD (I only tested with the Vista diskette. I assume the same dialogues will appear with the XP and 2000 one):
You'll probably get a "Write protect error writing drive A: Abort, Retry Fail?" error. Just enter "F" to choose the Fail option (this error will appear several times. Just keep pressing "F" every time it appears).
You'll eventually get to a screen where you should choose the option "Option 1: Repair the current master boot record." (press ENTER).
After a few more Fails, a message saying "repairing... writing new mbr..." should appear. After pressing Fail again, you'll get a message saying "File creation error".
Finally another screen will appear with two option: "Press ENTER and continue" and "Press ENTER and continue"(yes, both options have the same text). CHOOSE THE SECOND ONE! (I lost a bit of time here, because I kept choosing the first option).
You'll see a few more error messages (continue pressing "F") and finally a screen saying "The operation was completed successfully". Press ENTER.
You'll probably get a few more "Fails"... After reaching the DOS prompt ("A:\>"), you can turn off the computer.
Note: Remember to eject the CD, or you'll boot again from it.
Now, when you press the ThinkVantage button you'll have the F11 option or you'll be redirected to Rescue and Recovery.
THIS ACTUALLY WORKS!!!! if u dont see anything on screen or it seems 2 hang JUST PRESS "F".
Hope this helps for anyone who has this problem....

Does this mean anything to any of you?
Anyone know how to get this hunk of junk working again?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but after searching the forums, I find that this problem is almost identical to the issue I am facing.  I have a T22 Thinkpad, on which I was hoping to install Archlinux.  After reading the many positive reviews and exploring the wealth of documentation available, I was really looking forward to the Arch experience and education.  It seems like a good match for this Laptop and a chance for me to expand away from the "point-and-click" distros that I have been using.
However, I find that I am having difficulty much sooner than I expected.  The install CD stops booting  at the same point every time, just as indicated in the first message of this thread.  I have tried all manner of boot parameter codes as listed in the "Beginners Guide" without success.  I have even attempted to modify IRQ assignments in the BIOS, and still no luck.
This problem seems to be prevalent among the IBM T2x series of Thinkpads, and it effects are not limited to Archlinux installation problems.  Of the many Distros that I have tried, many will abort at this exact point in the CD boot process.  Others will complete the install without issue.  For example:
PClinuxOS 2007 (a 'known good' CD used to install on several machines) will not boot on the T22.  It fails just as listed above.  PCFluxboxOS (a minimalistic derivative of PClinuxOS) will consistently boot from the CD without problems.
If nothing else, this at least is indicative that there is a solution to this issue.  I'm just not knowledgeable enough to sort it out.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Status: 0xc0000428.
Tried recovery disks.  Tried restore, repair and restore to factory defaults.  Nothing has worked.

    Problem signature      0x800700B7
Problem signature  2      No OS installed.
Was going to try a MBR repair but unable to get to command Prompt
    Need some Ideas here....

I had attempted to use Restore, Repair, and Restore to factory all with no success.  Was stuck in a loop and always resulted in the same errors.  Even the factory restore did not work.  Factory restore ran through the whole setup and failed to boot into Windows at completion and returned the same error.  Yesterday evening just before I called HP Technical Support I attempted to run another repair from the recovery disks.  The repair fail again, but after the fail I recieved a different screen that said something to effect that some form of redirect had happened with WInLoad.exe.
I attempted to boot again and recieved the same errors again, at which time I called HP tech Support.  The Tech walked me through all the same things I had done and nothing changed.  Before I called Tech Support I had downloaded and ran HP Vision Diagnostic program, which I ran and everything pass.  But, the tech had me run restore to Factory one more time and this time it took, booted into WIndows 7.
Problem solved.  Damned if we know what fixed what.   Thank you for your help.

Not yet, but your one step away from it.
1: Get a external powered drive and your OS X install disk. Connect the drive to the computer.
2: Stick the disk in and reboot holding c, you'll boot off the disk.
3: Second screen in your looking at the OS X installer. STOP
4: Look under the Utilities menu for Disk Utility
5: Select your external drive and Erase > Format HFS+ Journaled > Erase....
6: Once completed, quit and your back in the Installer, install OS X onto the external drive (careful!)
7: Quit/reboot and hold down the option key, select the external drive to boot from, go through the setup.
8: Once in get online and download DataRescue to the drive.
9: Apply DataRescue to try to recover your files off the internal boot drive.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
10: Once your files are recovered and verified, you can use the installer disk to erase just the OS X partition (careful not your whole drive!) and reinstall OS X again without affecting your Windows partition.
DataRescue works by reading the platters directly for 1's and 0's that are your files, ignoring the structure and other issues.
You might have to use Disk Warrior as a last dtich effort to repair your internal hard drive to get your files off if DataRescue for some strange reason won't get all of them or if the recovered files are in a strange condition (verify them!), but if you get your files off then IMO Disk Warrior is not necessary since you can reinstall OS X for free.
