OS X crashing on reboot when USB Bluetooth device connected

After a very recent SW update to 10.4.5 OS X is crashing on reboot with a black screen of death when USB Bluetooth D-Link DWB-120M is connected. Crash is systematic if bluetooth device is connected. How do I correct the situation to be able to make use of the bluetooth USB device?

Hi, noordm. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "...crashing on reboot with a black screen of death..."Can you clarify what you mean by "black screen of death?"
For example, if you are seeing this message, that indicates a kernel panic.
If so, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Good luck!

  • Disable bluetooth "Device Connected" and "Device Disconnected" notification

    Hi there.
Is there a way to stop the bluetooth "device connected" and "device disconnected" notification from appearing in the middle of the screen?
Logically this notification should be optional and disabled out of the box just like other hardware notifications (network, printer, hard disk etc..).

  • IPod causing my laptop to crash and reboot when connecting to USB !!

    Hello all,
Here is what I am working with, 30 GB , 5th gen Video iPod with Itunes 7.6.2.9
    Problem:
I have had my Sony Vaio laptop with Vista for a couple of months and it had been humming along just fine with my 30GB Video iPod. After loading some new pics via Itunes recently I noticed that the capacity used information in the About section of the iPod was incorrect, my iPod was showing 1gig left, and I only have 500 songs, 600 photos, 3 videos and some podcasts loaded. Itunes showed I had plenty of space left so that contradicted what the Ipod reflected. So after some googling I found that the recommended solution was to restore your iPod and reload all your music back via Itunes. Little did I know that trying to solve that little problem would create a far greater one.
First using an external hard drive (Western Digital) I backed up all of my music from Itunes. I then started the restore process via Itunes, during the restore my computer hung and froze. Then my computer crashed and rebooted. When it came back up I plugged the iPod back into the USB to complete the restore, this time however my laptop did not recognize my iPod (note, it is empty, with no music since I did the restore). Instead my system assigned it a drive letter G: in the my computer section. A message box pops up asking if I want to scan and check or skip this new drive, it also says scan is recommended. I selected the scan and it checked the Ipod with no problems. If I elect not to scan the iPod then the computer will crash within 30 seconds. After it scans it appear s as if it is going to synch up, iPod says ‘do not disconnect’, then bam, computer crashes and reboots with the black screen. I tried various troubleshooting steps and each time when plugging the iPod in Itunes it starts up and it takes maybe 1 minute trying to recognize it when the computer crashes and reboots automatically going to the black screen and doing a file dump. It seems that no matter what I do Itunes does not recognize the iPod, the system sees it as a mass storage device, hence I am unable to complete the restore.
To troubleshoot I have done the following without any luck:
    - Removed Itunes (3x, using different versions) and reinstalled it, tried again
    to restore nothing, still crashing
    - Removed and reinstalled Quicktime as stand alone, still same thing. Note: for some reason on Vista you have to have Quicktime installed separate as stand alone and not select the automatic bundle version that comes with Itunes otherwise you will get a separate error that won’t allow you to open Itunes and it will say it’s corrupt. I spent hours on just this problem.
    - Downgraded my Itunes to an older version. Same problem.
    - Upgraded ITunes to the latest and greatest, 7.6.2.9, nada.
    - Reformatted my ipod at the command line, so as to bypass my computer from doing it, plugged it back in, this time it went a little longer before it crashed when Itunes came up.
    - Downloaded and installed all the latest Vista patches and fixes.
    - Downloaded and installed the latest Sony patches and fixes.
    - Re-assigned the drive letter on my Ipod, changed it to “Ipod”, “P”, and lastly “Q”, still shows up on my system as that drive letter, then Ipod. Another time it showed up just as drive letter, and “mass storage device”. Still Itunes is not recognizing it.
    - Plugged the iPod into different USB ports, 3 different ones, still same.
    - Checked each USB port, a sound does come on for each port when either plugging in the Ipod or another device, all ports recognize when a device is plugged in.
    - Made sure no other devices are plugged into the USB ports.
    - Disabled every single USB port via Device Manager, then plugged in Ipod, at that point it didn’t even recognize it.
    - Disabled every single USB port, except for 1, then plugged in Ipod, recognized in computer but not Itunes, then Itunes tries to recognize it, during that time my computer crashes and reboots
    - Disabled and reenabled every single USB port, then tried. Ipod is recognized in device manager but not Itunes. Ipod shows message “do not disconnect” for awhile, seems like its working… then bam, my laptop crashes. By the way, Itunes does come up and all my music is there.
    I also did this:
Reset the iPod using these steps:
    - Disconnect iPod.
    - Make sure the 'hold' switch is not on.
    - Press and hold the 'menu' and 'select' (circle) buttons simultaneously.
    - Keep holding them both down for at least five seconds.
    - The iPod displays the apple logo and properly resets.
In summary, I have spent over 30 hours working on this problem. Bottom line is Vista is assigning a lettered drive to the iPod thinking it is a mass storage device, hence it is not being recognized in Itunes enabling it to complete the restore. To complicate matters before you can do much troubleshooting the *laptop crashes and reboots within 3 minutes of plugging the iPod into any of the USB ports.* !!!
This is just utterly insane, don't know what else to do. For starters stopping my laptop from crashing everytime it is plugged in would be nice !
    Losing it in L.A.

+I tried various troubleshooting steps and each time when plugging the iPod in Itunes it starts up and it takes maybe 1 minute trying to recognize it when the computer crashes and reboots automatically going to the black screen and doing a file dump.+
I'm curious about this point. Is there any flash of a blue screen at any point here? (That's a more familiar sort of thing to be seeing prior to the system doing a restart after a serious error.)

If it is Kingston ValueRAM, that product has been troublesome since Intel Macs were introduced in 2006.

  • System reboots when USB device connected

I have a new motherboard (MS-7104), and sometimes when a USB device is plugged into the USB ports whilst the computer is turned on, the computer will restart.  This happens around 50% of the time, and there is no pattern to the device or port that is used.
The USB ports worked fine on my old MSI motherboard, so it would appear to be something related either to the new motherboard or to the drivers.
I have the latest motherboard drivers and Windows updates, so I don't know what else to try, or why this problem is occuring. The USB jumpers are connected correctly onto the motherboard.
    Board - MS-7104 (P4M800)
    CPU - Celeron D 2.26 GHz
    512 MB RAM
    Windows XP Home with SP2

Power Supply is the silver box that you plug your AC power main cord to your chassis, and it has many cables coming out to plug to your motherboard to provide power. That's the power supply. It does not have any software interface for you to access to know what it is. You need to physically take a look at the power supply itself, and tell what each voltage rail's current rating is - +12V, +5V, +3.3V, -12V, 5V-stby.

  • Satellite C660-108 does not boot if USB Bluetooth dongle connected

    Hiya,
I hope you would help me.
I am having an issue with my bluetooth dongle and satellite c660-108.
It works all perfectly. It connects devices via bluetooth and I can do everything I want.
But then when I am shutting down laptop and turning on again it won't go if the bluetooth dongle is still in the usb socket.
I see Toshiba screen and then it hangs with black screen and blinking cursor in top left corner.
I have to turn it off, take out the bluetooth dongle and then turn it on again.
And then windows starts. After that I have to put in bluetooth dongle again if I want to work with it.
It is not a huge issue but it is a bit annoying when I have to take out the bluetooth and put it back again to get the windows started.
I am currently running under win 8.1 but had it already with win 8.
    Anybody any ideas??

    >I see Toshiba screen and then it hangs with black screen and blinking cursor in top left corner.
Mostly the blinking cursor appears because the notebook cannot find an bootable device.
It looks like the unit cannot switch to the HDD while the USB dongle is connected.
I would recommend you checking the booting order in the BIOS.
Set the HDD at the first place and the USB as last possible booting device.
Save the changes and check if it helps.

  • OS X kernel logs problem when USB flash drive connected.

Previously, my Creative Nomad Muvo TX (MP3 player/1GB USB memory stick) worked fine with my Intel Mac mini (10.4.8) until the latest EFI 1.1 update.
Now the USB drive does not mount or appear in finder. It is visible in the System Profiler in the USB section, but the disk utility does not see it.
While the USB stick is plugged in, the system logs the following line repeatedly:
Nov 26 21:32:39 kernel[0]: USBF: 2517.425 AppleUSBEHCI[0x3969000]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 253, timing out!
Booting in Windows XP (with bootcamp) and plugging in the USB memory stick works fine. So the USB stick and the Mac mini hardware is functioning.
Other USB 2 external harddrives are functioning properly in OS X.
I suspect that the latest Mac OS X or EFI 1.1 firmware update has spoilt my previously happy USB memory stick connection.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in adcvance.
    Stephanus

    Hi, Stephanus.
    1. If Creative does not support that device with a Mac, then that should tell you something. Even if it worked in the past, since they don't support it, there's no guarantee that changes to Mac OS X would render it unusable as you've noted. With that kind of attitude from Creative, I'd think about switching to an iPod...
Since you can use it when booted into Windows with Boot Camp, you might want to consider running Parallels Desktop for Mac. This leverages the virtualization technology of the Intel chips, permitting you to run Mac OS X and Windows simultaneously, rather than having to boot into Windows with Boot Camp. Parallels is cheaper than buying an iPod.
    2. The USB message you reported is essentially indicating that the OS detected a USB device but cannot talk to it. This is unlikely to be something you're going to work around, e.g. with Terminal.
    3. If you want to pursue this further, you can:3.1. Install the USB debug kit for your version of Mac OS X. Apple provides a variety of Mac OS X USB Software Debug Versions that "are used to provide information about USB device and interface detection, driver and interface matching, driver loading and information generated as a result of normal and abnormal conditions." You could install the package corresponding to the version of Mac OS X you are running and this may help identify if the issue is a USB problem and the exact USB anomaly causing such.
3.2. Take what you've been able to lear from the USB debugger and do one or more of the following:• Join the Apple USB Mailing List. Once your registration is approved, submit a question including the enhanced output from the USB logger and requesting additional advice. That list is monitored by developers of USB devices. Posts are sometimes answered by Apple engineers.
    • Join the Apple Developer Connection at the "free" level, then submit a bug report.
    • Submit a Mac OS X Feedback. If Creative has their own forums, ala Discussions, you might also want to search or post there for similar reports.Unfortunately, that's about all I have to offer at this point: I don't have the Creative device and hence can't test it.
I think that Creative is disinterested in helping you is a key issue you need to consider.
    Good luck!

  • D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter: connecting to headsets or not???

    Hi there!
I want to use a headset with my G5, using a BT USB adapter. Mine doesn't work, so I'm thinking - unhappily - of buying a D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter.
But: in the Apple Store, they say it does not work with headsets!!!
On the other side, people in the board here are claiming that it works, if you apply the firmware updater.
Which one is right??? I can hardly belive that Apple using untrue negatif customer feedback as a marketing strategie... so I'm a bit confused.
==>>> I would like to hear from people who are using the D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter if they are able to connect to a headset or not (even people not having a headset can test this, just run the BT hardware wizard, selecting headset, and see if there is the error or not).
    Thanks a lot.
    Gilbert

Using a headset needs several steps even needed if you have the latest computer or Mac OS X release. Please make sure to follow them in order.
Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
    Install it
Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the already installed updater yourself (do not ask me why).

    Hi Brian,
    Here's an update:
The nub of the problem has been determined by my computer expert as a conflict (as we suspected) between the graphics driver and screen resolution.  However the situation is far from dimple.  I'll be as brief as possible:
No matter how we approach the settings for the Nvidia driver, when using HDMI, the 'workings' of the compuer automatically reset the driver to either the inbuilt Intel driver and if that's deliberately 'disabled' it reverts to the even more basic Windows 8 driver.  As neither card/driver is 'dedicated', the sharing that occurs between the native resolution of the notebook display and the external display (even if this is set to a compatible value)  the the computer crashes.  It remains OK if a single dsipaly (internal or external) is selected.  Dual display (which I must have) is the problem.  My computer expert is going to contact Asus about this. He even tried setting the global setting to Nvidia only and it still didn;'t succeed.
I've since spoken with a colleague and he tells me that in the audio-visual community, this is a well known phenomenom with rexcent lapptops/notebooks no matter what to cost or spec - in so far as they ignor the 'dedicated graphics' when on HDMI in favour of the default (shared) driver and hence the problem. Apparently some notebooks are OK but one has to shop around and take pot luck.  What a state of affairs!
The Asus notebook works OK using the VGA socket but let's face it, I bought this hi-spec computer for HDMI usage.
This is the story to date.  It would appear that software is not the root cause.
I will continue to pursue the matter and find a resolutuion (no pun intended - or perahps it was!)
    With all best wishes,
    Clive.

  • Network Configuration Window Freezes When USB NDIS Internet Connection Sharing and Ethernet Port Are Used Simultaneously

    Current Setup:
Asrock Extreme 4 Z77 mobo with built-in Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet.  Windows 8 Pro. Intel i5-3570k (using onboard Intel 4000 HD Graphics).  RAID0- 2 OCZ Vertex 4's.
I will refer to this setup as my tower.
The Ethernet port works fine by itself.  When I use wired tethering with my Android phone (Droid 4 running on 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich), it works fine when nothing is connected into the Ethernet port in the mobo.
The issue arises when I try to connect both simultaneously.  The network configuration window in windows basically freezes and I cannot really navigate it without a ~60 second delay at best.
I would like to be able to accept the internet from my Android via a USB tether and either bridge the connection or use the internet connection sharing service to route traffic through the unused Ethernet port on the mobo (either to another computer/xbox
or more desirably a switch/router to spread to the entire home network).  I have extensively researched the issue of Windows 8 become slow and unresponsive when I attempt to do this and I have not found anyone with the exact problem.  I am able to
do both the MAC bridge miniport (bridge 2 connections) and Internet Connection Sharing though a Windows Vista (home premium) Laptop I have. The difference between the laptop and the tower I am try to do this on is the laptop has a WIFI and Ethernet connection
while the tower only has the on-board Ethernet.
Do I have all the necessary equipment to accomplish this, or do I need to buy a PCIe WIFI card?  If so could I get away with just getting a USB WIFI dongle?
Any help would be very appreciated.

I had the same problem and came here by searching.
Per Rosengren's method solved the problem, but he didn't say how to do it, so I'll try to explain step-by-step for anyone that may venture here.
Open Device Manager (right click on Computer > Manage > on the left side, under System Tools choose Device Manager)
Choose the problematic device in Network Adapters (for me it's called HTC Remote NDIS based device)
Right click on it and choose Update Driver Software...
Click Browse my computer for driver software
Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers
Uncheck the box Show compatible hardware
For the manufacturer, choose Microsoft Corporation
Now you will have two options:
    - Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device
    - Remote NDIS Compatible Device
I chose the second one and it solved the problem, but if it doesn't work you could try the other one. In my case, the driver that was being used was neither of these, but a special driver from Android SDK ADT bundle.
Pick one and click Next. If a dialog comes up, confirm by clicking Yes.
Wait a few seconds for the connection to restart. If it doesn't work, try disabling and reenabling USB tethering on the phone, or reconnect the USB cable.
I should also note that I'm using a custom Android ROM on HTC Wildfire S (unofficial Cyanogenmod). If you have a stock ROM with HTC Sense, maybe this method may not work and you'll need a proprietary HTC driver.
