OS X defaulting to 2 pages per sheet in "layout" tab

Hello,
I have a problem in printing from my unibody Macbook running Leopard. All printers that I have installed (all networked in my University - Xerox Phasers and HP Jaserjets) default to 2 pages per sheet (or per side) in the "layout" tab. (i.e. not the same as Duplex). That means each sheet is printed at 50% or so, rendering it unsuable for my needs. This is not a default from the University - others dont seem to get this problem. How do I change this default back to 1 page per sheet? (Duplex can stay).

I was using a preset called "Duplex" - I assumed that it shipped with OS X - and it printed 2 pages a side. Perhaps my university IT installed it for me - but it appears to be the thing that created this issue.
I deleted that particular preset and made a new one for "duplex" - 2 sided printing, but only 1 page a side. It appears to be working fine.

    I have an old HP Laserjet 2200 series printer.  When printing from Adobe (no other application), the default "pages per sheet" is 2.  In the dropdown option box, 1 page per sheet is not listed!  The only solution I have found is to select "Custom" from the dropdown list and specify 1 page per sheet.  How do I correct this problem and specify Adobe's default of 1 page per sheet for all documents? 

    Are you referring to the print dialog in Reader or a driver setting?
    For one page per sheet of output, one would normally would use the Size  option as opposed to the Multiple  option which was designed for 2 or more pages per sheet (although it will let you specify a custom setting of 1 x 1 pages per sheet.

    You could use custom page sizes (in the Page Setup dialog) or you could see if the settings in the Paper Handling panel help at all.

    I'm trying to print multiple pages to a single page using the Layout->"Pages per sheet" option in the printing dialogue (for instance in Preview). It does not matter what paper size I chose (A4 usually) or what paper size my original document is in. If I save the document as PDF (in the printing dialogue) the paper size of the resulting file is always letter.
    The default paper size in the printing preferences pane is set to A4, but that has no effect either.
    As I live in Europe and want to print the PDF I created on A4 paper eventually, this is pretty annoying...
    Any ideas why the "Pages per sheet" option disregards all paper size settings?

    No, but A4 is similar to Letter...when you print the PDF eventually, just set to A4 then. It's a workaround, but it's not that messy.

    The standard Mac Print - Layout - Pages per Sheet drop down offers 1,2,4,6,9 & 16 pages per sheet. Why is there no 8 pages per sheet option? This seems a bizarre omission. In a world of ISO 'A' paper sizes, it is easy to scale any binary power number of sheets onto, say, A4 for printing. 1,2,4 and 16 are offered - what has Apple got against 8? Does anyone know if/how I might add 8 as an option?

    N-Up Printing
    The -o number-up=value option selects N-Up printing. N-Up printing places multiple document pages on a single printed page. CUPS supports 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 16-Up formats; the default format is 1-Up:
    lp -o number-up=1 filename lp -o number-up=2 filename lp -o number-up=4 filename lpr -o number-up=16 filename

    Can't turn off multiple pages per sheet - I used this option for one pdf document and now the settings are sticking.  I don't want to  always print 2 by 2.   I was able to set a Custom Multiple page to "1 by 1" but this seems silly. How do I get the default single page printing back?

  • How do I print front and back with two pages per sheet? (OSX Lion)

    I can't find a simple solution to my situation...
    I'm using Max OSX Lion 10.7.3 and Adobe Reader X 10.1.2. 
    I want print two PDF pages onto one printed sheet, and I want to print front and back.  When I go to the print settings and select two pages per printed sheet, the sample window shows me what I'm looking for.  But when I tell it to print odd only or even only, it changes the print selection.  Here's what happens...
    Let's say I have a PDF document that is 20 pages long.  When I tell it to print two PDF pages per sheet, it shows me that the first pages printed will be PDF pages 1 and 2.  When I tell it that I want it to print odd pages only, it tells me that the first printed page will contain PDF pages 1 and 3.
    In other words, Adobe Reader wants to print the odd PDF pages instead of the odd pages of the printed document (PDF pages 1 and 2, then 5 and 6, then 9 and 10, so on).
    So that I'm being clear...
    This [  ] is a printed page.  The numbers inside the brackets represent the page numbers in the PDF document...
    What I want to print is this...
      FRONT   ||  BACK

    Aside from telling it exactly which PDF page numbers to print (this would be a taxing job because I'm working with a 273 page document), is there an easy and simple way to print how I'd like?

    I would suggest to use Adobe Ilustrator. Also I get an error message when I try tp access the sample document.

    The printing interface has changed in preview, and whereas there used to be an option to print multiple pages per sheet, there's now only an option to print multiple copies per sheet. The latter is of no use to me, whereas printing multiple pages per sheet was very useful since I often print large documents.

    Well, in Snow Leopard I used to print PDFs from Preview, and if I recall correctly, where it now says 'copies per page', it used to say 'images per page'. So of course, I now have a couple of printouts with two copies of each page per sheet.
    But the preview tab and then the option 'layout' works. I don't understand why this interface had to change though.

  • 4 "Pages per Sheet" in Printer dialog no longer works

    I frequently print my documents to PDF 4 pages to a sheet, using the Save As PDF option in the Printer dialog (i.e., I don't have Acrobat installed). The last time I did this about 2 weeks ago, it worked fine. Today, it ignores my settings of 4 pages to a sheet and prints every page as a separate "sheet" in the PDF. The only thing I know of that has changed over the past two weeks is the update to 10.5.7. How do I fix this so I can print 4 pages to a sheet again?

    My problem is solved. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple support. When they mentioned I might need a printer driver update to keep up with the OS update, I noticed that I no longer had any printer installed at all. I don't know how that happened, but I will assume it had to do with the OS update.
    I plugged in a printer, added its driver (which I later noticed caused me to have a new one, plus the original one reappeared), disconnected the printer (I don't want hard copy), and now it works perfectly as it did before. I get 4 pages per sheet like I should.
    Don't ask me why the existence of a printer should matter when I am only creating a PDF. But that is what happened.

    Nope, that's a Flash-only effect. Sometimes people try to embed a SWF (Flash file) into a PDF, but that only plays like it's a movie, and doesn't work well.
    I think you should give up on the idea if you want to use PDF as the distribution method.

  • Pages Per Sheet Not Working.

    In previous versions of Mac OS X this was never a problem for me, but I can't get the "pages per sheet" feature listed in the Layout menu of the print dialogue to work.  I've created documents in TextEdit, Microsoft Word, and a few other applications and I cannot get a single page to print 2, 4, or any iteration listed printed on one page.  I consistently get one page only when I try to preview the layout using pdf preview.  I just want to have one page reduced in size to fit four on a page and my understanding was that this is precisely what this layout feature was designed to do.
    Some other posts on this issue suggest that you actually have to create the same number of pages first to get this to work.  That thinking defeats the purpose. Why would I create four of the same pages only to use the layout feature which SHOULD do it for me.  Besides, I've used the feature in previous versions of the Mac OS X exactly as I am describing above.
    Any insight would be helpful.  I've tried this on my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro.

    Not going to work withthe way you've set up unless you place your current pages into a new file.
    In CS4 or later you can set up a facing pages A5 PORTRAIT document, then rotate the spread view tro see them stacked as they would appear on A4. When exporting or printing, check the "Spreads" box to get the A4 size with the two pages.
    Not that you'll want to start with an even page number or you'll be jumping through other hoops to get the first two pages together on a single spread.

    My system was reformatted recently and everything had to be reinstalled.
    Acrobat Reader XI (11.0.2) and Acrobat Pro 9 (9.0.0*) are now having problems when printing PDFs: every PDF is always printed at 2 pages per sheet. The resulting 4-point type printouts are not useable.
    Word prints 1 page per sheet.
    I'm not exactly sure where to even start troubleshooting this. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    *Yes, 9.0.0. When I accepted the last automatic update, Acrobat Pro started crashing on startup. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and am very, very wary about accepting an update right now.

    Well, that was interesting.
    After running the Acrobat Cleaner from the above link, on both Acrobat Pro 9.0 and Reader 11.0.2, it looked like everything was gone.
    However, the company uses CA's IT Client Manager, and its DSM Software Delivery Catalog thinks that Acrobat Pro is still installed. So does Add/Remove Programs.
    Six system reboots and A long call with the help desk later, my case has been escalated to the CA team and we'll see what happens now.
    Reader 11.0.2 is reinstalled, and now? It can't print AT ALL. I get this instead of a printout:
    ERROR: undefined
    OFFENDING COMMAND: Pscript_WinNT_Compat
