OS X disappeared from "Option" key startup menu after Boot Camp

I ran Boot Camp Assistant until the part where I enter the XP CD. (I entered the version before service pack 1 by accident.)
I'm not sure if it's related, but I can no longer boot to Mac OS X. It just hangs on the gray screen (no logo) if there's no CD, or hangs on the black blinking cursor if there is a CD.
Windows shows up as a bootup option, but I never got the chance to install it.
What do I do?

Press and Hold the OPTION key during startup and see if you get the menu to load OSx. If you do then click on OSx and boot into Leopard. Run boot camp assistant again and remove the Windows partition to restore the HD back into its original state.

  • Option Key not working with Boot Camp.

    Hi all,
I installed Boot Camp on my new Alu Imac 24" (wired keyboard) and when booting up the option key that should bring up the boot options doesn't work. Is this a known fault with the slimline keyboard and Boot Camp??
I have tried all different combinations of power button and Option key but nothing works.
    Any suggestion?
    Cheers

  • Why my Startup Manager does not appear when I hold the Option key when starting to boot.

I no longer have the Startup Manager appearing when I hold the Option key when starting to boot.
Instead, the system just boots into whichever OS was last selected in the Startup Disk Preference.
How to get back my Startup Manager so that I can boot up from my external hard disk.
    Thank you.

Can you please run the following in terminal and post the output in your reply:
diskutil list; echo; nvram -p | grep boot-args; echo

  • Can't use Option key startup

When I try to do Option key startup, I get a black screen. After two minutes, I let go the key, and still just balck screen.
I am trying to choose startup disk during boot.
This problem seems to have started after I installed internal SATA drive running on Sonnet card.

Here is the article about Startup Manager.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Is you "Dual 500 G4" a Power Mac with AGP Graphics? I assume it is, but if you have an processor upgrade, maybe not.
Is it possible that the Sonnet card does not work with Startup Manager? If so, you may need to start up from another disk, or a Mac OS X Installation Disk, and choose your startup disk explicitly.

My iTunes Festival app disappeared from my Apple TV menu screen, does anyone know how to bring it back again?
I restarted my Apple TV and everything but nothing is happening... please help!

I may be wrong but I suspect the festival was a limited time free extra not directly advertised on the AppleTV page.  I agree it's a shame it's gone - I browsed it and there were a few artists I might have watched who were not available as they had not played yet.
There may well be licensing/contractual limitations for how long Apple can broadcast the material set up by the music studios and artists.
If things are added for free temporarily it would be nice if they gave some kind of expiration date warning.

Is it possible to install windows 7 on my macbook from a removable hard drive using boot camp?

If you have Lion installed, and run Boot Camp, it will create the boot flash for you, just followe the tutorial on screen. As far as I remember, this was not possible prior to Lion.

  • Boot from option key

Up until recently I have been able to change my boot drive by using the option key with my keyboard plugged into e display.  Although the keyboard appears to functioning correctly for example "Option j'  gives "∆" while plugged into the display, the option key will not access the other drives during start up unless I plug the keyboard directly into the computer. Any ideas?

I had thought it was the result of downloading a phone program. At much the same time as loading the Motorola Device Manger I had also unplugged my display. There are 2 USB sockets on the back of the display and my keyboard is plugged into one and an unconnected iPod lead into the other.  On replugging I must have swapped the 2 USB plugs over as although the keyboard was function normally when typing the Alt boot facility wasn't.  I have since found that only the left hand socket provides the Alt boot facility.  Odd

  • Time Capsule Disappears from Radius Base Stations List after adding

I'm running a Mac Mini with 10.7, Lion Server, and Server Admin Tools along with a Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Generation).
After I add the base station (you can see my steps below) the base station restarts and then disappears from the list. The base station is then ignored:
Sat Jul 23 11:47:41 2011 : Error: Ignoring request to authentication address * port 1812 from unknown client 10.0.1.1 port 65530
This is because it's not listed as a known base station in the radius config (as far as I can tell). No other errors (than the one above) listed in either radiusconfig Log or radiusd Log. I cannot figure out how to add the base station to the list! Do I need to just manually add it to the clients.conf? If I do that, I feel like I probably won't get any of the special features that come with the Server managing the base station. Has anyone else experience this?
The base station does get the configuration from the server when I set it up, it switches from WPA 2 Personal to WPA 2 Enterprise with a shared secret, the correct IP and port 1812.
The server does not have a firewall configured or enabled (for simplicity while configuring this...)
Here's how I set up Radius:
Selected the Time Capsule from the Hardware list in Server.app
Checked the box for "Allow user name and password login over wi-fi"
Opened up the Server Admin.app and selected my server
    Expanded to choose RADIUS
    Chose Configure RADIUS Service
    Allowed all users
Selected my Base Station and entered the password
    Used my default certificate
    Accepted the default options
    Let the Time Capsule restart
After the Time Capsule was back online, Base Stations lists 0 base stations.
Clicked on the Base Stations Tab and Chose Browse, selected the base station, entered the password, let the Time Capsule Restart, it shows up in the list, but when the list is refreshed, the Time Capsule no longer appears in the list.
Clicked on the add button ("+") and Added the information manually, set a shared secret, and let the Time Capsule restart, it shows up in the list, but when the list is refreshed, the Time Capsule no longer appears in the list.
Using Terminal, manually tried to add the Base Station: radiusconfig --capture-base-station 10.0.1.1 10.0.1.254
    Entered a shared secret
Time Capsule restarted, was never listed in the radius config

Hello, I am having the same exact problem. Have you figured out a solution?

  • Apps disappeared from "Use Cellular Data For" after iOS 8.0.2

Normally, when you go to Settings->Cellular Data, you can see a list of all apps that use data, and you are able to turn cellular data on or off for each app individually.
I had been using this feature since iOS 7 without problem, until I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2.
Now, only "FaceTime" and "Passbook" appear under this list. All other apps, including Mail, Safari, etc. have disappeared.
What's worse, apps for which I had turned cellular data for---such as YouTube---cannot be turned back on, because they have disappeared from this list. Therefore, I am permanently unable to use YouTube without Wifi because of this bug. The same goes for every app for which I had turned off cellular data.
I tried restoring the iPhone (it's an iPhone 5), to no avail.
Does anyone else have this issue, or is it a weird bug with just my phone?

    Hi jah_mez69,
No, I did not solve this problem, and it persists in iOS 8.1.2.
Apple have a reluctance to take bugs affecting smaller groups of users seriously. With regard to this bug, their attitude is that we should just erase our phones and set them up from scratch. This is something I refuse to do.
I did open a new bug about this in the bug tracker (bug #18732898). It hasn't been closed yet, which means at the very least, they have not decided to totally ignore this bug forever. However, don't get your hopes up for a fix.
I have learned to live with it, but it has pushed me closer to choosing Android for my next phone. I am fairly confident that iOS software bugs are far less important to Apple than developing smart watches and payment systems and getting the next "hot" feature out the door.

  • G4 PowerBook won't boot unless I press Option key - powers off after 20secs

(Originally posted as topic "will only boot when in Verbose mode")
When booting up, my PowerBook only gets as far as the initial black screen and audio chime. After approx. 20 seconds the hard disk/super-drive dies with a high-pitched squeak, just before it was supposed to show the grey screen and then the Apple logo.
If I hold down the Option key, it boots up fine! However, Option-V fails to display the Verbose mode messages (has only done so once after I flashed the PROM, has not done it since.)
I've re-installed Tiger 10.8.4, flashed the PROM, removed the battery and reset the Power Management Unit with 5-second power-switch, but still no change.
Could it be caused by a problem with a faulty video DVI adaptor or socket? (plugs in directly under the power switch - I got an unwanted power-down message as I unplugged the adaptor tonight). The last time the machine worked ok was when I had it plugged in to a multimedia projector throught the DVI adapter.

I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the OS.
    * A clone of the OS on another disk boots fine - this would not boot if the issue was a system one.
    * A vanilla Snow Leopard install on the same (not working disk, but 2nd partition) won't boot either. If the issue was with the system this one would boot.
    * Erasing this second partition didn't help.
(I've already done all the above suggestions using Single user mode etc.)
Now a similar issue reported here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=501768
suggests using fdisk to make the boot disk 'active'.
+A common mantra provided here to newbies for setting up for installation is:+
    +Make the partition Primary+
+Make the partition ID=AF (signifies an HFS partition)+
    +Make the partition Active+
+There is a built-in Unix utility in MacOSX that can be used to set your partition "Active". It is called Fdisk+
However, when I use Fdisk my disk reports a negative size:
    fdisk: 1> p
    Disk: /dev/rdisk3 geometry: -5415437/4/63 [-1364690128 sectors]
However, it also does this with another 1.5TB disk I have suggesting that the size of the disk is a problem. Is there another way to make the disk 'active' as this seems to be where the problem lies.

  • How to select OS X startup disk after booting up in 8.6

I recently purchased an old iBook G3 (original clamshell model) to run some old Mac games I had laying around (was in a nostalgic mood I guess). It came with OS 8.6 and I installed an old copy of OS X 10.2 Jaguar onto it. It wouldn't let me run in the "Classic" environment, as it has OS 8.6, not OS 9.x. I found I was able to launch the computer from 8.6 by selecting the 8.6 start up disk, and thought I could try running some of my really old Mac apps. Long story short, once I booted up in 8.6 I've been unable to figure out how to boot back up in 10.2. It's been over 10 years since I last used anything older than Mac OS X, and I don't remember where everything is, and how to change the startup disk back to 10.2.
If anyone knows, please help. I'd really like to avoid doing a complete system restore if possible.

    Two ways:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
    Use Startup Disk Preferences:
Open Startup Disk prefs from System Preferences.
Select the volume from which you want to start.
    Click on the Restart button.
    Click on Restart again.

  • Volume and Eject Keys No Longer Work After Boot Camp 2.1 Update

Earlier this evening I allowed the Apple Software Update app in Windows to update Boot Camp to version 2.1. I allowed the computer to restart following a successful installation of the update. I've restarted two more times since then. Ever since the update (including before the computer restarted for the first time following the update), the volume and eject keys on my keyboard don't work. I also have an Apple Wireless Keyboard (one of the 2003-2007 era white/clear ones) and it exhibits the same problem. Both keyboards otherwise work fine. The computer also otherwise works fine, and there's no evidence of any driver problems.
    Some other potentially relevant information:
1- The Boot Camp icon is no longer present in the Windows System Tray.
2- The Boot Camp Control Panel is still present in the Windows Control Panel and it works fine.
3- All settings in the Boot Camp Control panel are unchanged from their defaults. In particular, I have confirmed that "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is still unchecked.
4- The Windows Device Manager properly recognizes both keyboards as Apple Keyboards.
I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate on an early 2008 MacBook; system specs are in my signature. Any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and double-thanks if you can respond with any suggestions!

Ah, the joy of working with computers...:( Apparently, from my woes with the same problem, the Apple Keyboard Manager is rightfully entered into the Run directory in the Windows registry at HKLM/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run.
Why it doesn't start I still have to find out, but this may be because I have Parallels Workstatio installed as well and switch back between a virtualized Windows and a Bootcamp Windows. However, after installing Bootcamp 2.1 first and then SP3 IN THE BOOTCAMP ENVIRONMENT everything seems to work, except the Energy Options taskbar icon and Apple Keyboard Manager.
Will keep you posted on any progress I make.
Apple Support, BTW, was absolutely abysmal, with them even refusing to accept the ticket at all, on the grounds that they have no knowledge about Windows. Apple, get your support fixed!
