OS X equivalent of Windows Slipstream

Does anyone know of a solution for OS X similar to Windows' slipstream?
Slipstreaming is the process of applying service packs and patches to a windows install CD, so that you have install media that is totally up to date.
I'd like to make such a DVD for OS X 10.4, that already has 10.4.4 and all patches applied.
Or, at least 10.4.4 pre-applied would be beneficial.
Thanks!

There is no such animal. Each combo updater released by Apple will update any incremental version of OS X to the current incremental version (within a major version number.)
The closest you would come would be to create a Net Restore DVD that would have a "standardized" copy of OS X that could be used to install on multiple computers. For more on that visit www.bombich.com. Also see this article:

  • Equivalent to Windows Movie Maker on Mac?

    Is there a equivalent to Windows Movie Maker on Mac?

    iMovie is included on the current models of Mac. If it was on yours, then you should be able to reinstall it from the CDs that came with your computer.
    Otherwise you can purchase iLife, which includes iMovie. Since you posted in the Tiger forum, I'm going to assume you're running OSX 10.4. The current iLife requires 10.5 so you'd have to find and older copy of iLife08 or upgrade to OSX 10.5 or 10.6, then install iLife09.

  • [hardware] Equivalent of Windows platform

    Actually, I am really new to unix. And I don't know where else to post my question.
    We are currently developing an application whose minimum hardware requirements are:
    Pentium III 800MHz Quad Processor
    40 or more GB hard disk space
    2 GB Memory
    That is running on Windows 2000.
    We will need to transfer the application to a UNIX environment. But my problem is I do not know the hardware equivalent of the above specifications that has UNIX.
    Could you recommend a Compaq or HP hardware that might be appropriate for our requirements.
    And also, in your opinion, how difficult or easy would it take a non-unix person like me to move the application from the windows environment to unix.
    Thanks. =)

    My experience is that a quad PIII is equivalent (perhaps slightly faster) to a quad Ultra Sparc II (I have no Ultra Sparc III experience) from the standpoint raw CPU speed. Solaris boxes tend to give you better I/O speed than typical Intel server boxes, but if you get the right parts (caching raid controllers with 64-bit PCI buses) you can get quite close. The price difference is about 1.5X to 2X, depending on many factors.
    Linux or Solaris on Intel may also be a good choice, depending on the hardware vendor support options. Look at IBM hardware as well based on Intel or Power PC architectures running linux or AIX.

  • Looking for chmod equivalent for Windows

    A little back story, I've managed to cobble together an After Effects psuedo plugin installer for one of my upcoming scripts. One hiccup was dealing with file permissions, to properly install the plugin. After many searches, trial & errors, and finally help from Lloyd Alvarez I managed to get a proper working piece of code for updating file permissions on Mac. there's a lot more to the code, but this is the primary permissions update snippit.
    system.callSystem("chmod u+rw \"MyFilePath\"");
    Now I am in the process of finding a Windows equivalent to this. I found info on CACLS ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490872.aspx ), but have been seeing tons of "it doesn't work...", "not compatible with newer os..." and such around the interwebs. Not sure if anyone here can expand upon those claims. I ideally would like to use something that is as universal as possible with Windows 7, XP, Vista. Worse case scenario, I would just provide instructions so the user can manually change the permissions, but I am trying to simplify the process by keeping the user from having to dig into files on their system. Would love to hear any thoughts. Thanks.

    The command to do that is attrib dating from the old dos time. Go to this microsoft page to get all the info about it : http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/attrib.mspx ?mfr=true

  • Is there a Mac equivalent to Windows "Print Screen"?

    I couldn't help but notice that my mac keyboard doesn't have a "Prt Scn" button the way a Windows Keyboard does. I ask this because sometimes as I play UT2004, I like to get screen caps of the game itself. I no longer have a PC and I wish to continue to get screen caps of the game. Is there a mac equivalent to this? Or what else can I do?
    PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Well there is a screen capture in the game itself, I think it's one of the "F" keys. Look in the manual.
    On a Mac a full screen capture can be invoked with a Apple (Command) Shift 3. Of course you'll have to quit to see it if your in UT2004 full screen mode. I don't know where UT2004 dumps it's screen capture at. Possible both on the desktop (wallpaper) where it should go.
    There is also a Command Shift 4, which will give you a cross-hairs to select a part of the screen.
    Combining any of the above with Control will place it right in the clipboard for pasting in your favorite program that can display it.
    Here is a master list
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75459
    If you like UT2004 like I do, you know you can add a $hitload of maps and mods to what you get from the disks. I got a few hundred different maps myself.
    First what you have to do is visit the UT2004 site and download the latest Mac update with Editor's Choice Bonus Pack combination.
    It's kind of hard to find as it's not on some of the mirrored sites.
    This is the one you want ut2004-macpatch3369-2.dmg.bz2
    on this page
    http://www.3dgamers.com/games/unrealtourn2k4/downloads/
    Download and run this baby, you'll need the cd in at first but after that you won't need the cd anymore. You'll also get more maps and neat new vehicles.
    Of after that, register on this site especially use a Mac user type name, like MacHead, just to show support in the gaming world for our platform.
    http://www.unrealplayground.com/index.php
    and on the left side under UT2004 is a list of maps (CTF=Carry the flag etc etc.)
    find which one you like and download it. There are TONS
    Now to install it. Select the original UT2004 app in Applications folder and hold control key while clicking on it. A menu will popup which you select "open package contents" (the app is really a folder!)
    Now you unzip the download and place similar extension files in the respective folders. I would start off with .ut2 that goes into Maps folder.
    .usx goes into StaticMeshes folder
    .utx goes into Textures folder
    and so on, some downloads will include a text file so you put the correct files in the correct folders. (Like System for instance) Some downloads include their files in folders with the respective destination it's supposed to go into. Just take them out and place them in liked named ones in the UT2004 folder.
    UT2004 seems to place new maps/mods at the bottom of the list when you go to select them in the game itself.
    UT2004 will give days and days of repeated enjoyment, unlike other games that get worn-out once you've played them through.
    Also when you get a chance, learn how to clone that boot drive of yours to a external drive for safekeeping. It takes so long to start over from scratch rebuilding in case of a hard drive failure, corruption or whatnot.
    Cloning has to be done with software like Carbon Copy Cloner. Once you do it, you can hold option and boot directly off of it in case something goes wrong with your primary boot drive. Repair, recover or just erase and reverse clone the whole drive back over! It really is a lifesaver.
    See this link
    http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=2607
    You "Zero" a new drive by using Disk Utility, select the drive and Erase with Zero option and format HFS+. It's very highly recommended for the best reliable writes to your drive.
    If you have anymore questions, stop by again.
    Welcome to Macintosh!

  • Is there a Mac OSX equivalent to Windows Live Writer?

    I mean is there an available software app that does the equivalent of what Windows Live Writer does?
    And that you would recommend?

    I don't use it for my sites, but I know a lot of people who really like Coda, so if I was looking for something like this, it's the one I'd check out first.

  • MacBook Air equivalent to windows bios

    Does the MacBook air allow you to get into the computer like using the Bios on a PC? Is there something I push when the computer starts up? I have a brand new air, 2012 13 inch.

    No it's not. It means that the inexperienced can't terminally mangle their operating system like they always do in Windows. It is also one of the things that makes Apple OS X so much more secure than the virus-prone Windows.
    System Preferences provides all the options you should beed.

  • Equivalent to windows home button

    Reading the MacBook manual, I am on page 63. How do I get back to page 1 without scrolling up for ten minutes? On PC's there's a "Home" button that takes you to the top. What's the Mac (Lion 10.7) equivalent?  Thank you!

    Ah I see your point. Never ran into this because I have my scroll bar set to Jump to spot that's clicked  so if i clcik at the top of the scroll bar it goes to the top of the document.
    That setting is in System Preferences:
    If you set that you might also find it helpful to set Show scroll bars to Always
    But as far as an actual home button there isn't one by default. Some sofware such as the help feature supply it but its on a case by case basis.

  • What is Mac's equivalent to Windows Explorer (file manager not internet explorer)?

    Have just migrated to macBook Pro from being a windows user for years. I don't trust backing up my important files to Cloud and would much prefer to back them up to an external hard drive as I used to on my Windows laptop. How can I do the same in my MacBook - I just want to 'right click' on a folder called 'documents' and copy everything over to the external drive. Can this be done?

    It's called Finder and yes you can copy your documents to an external drive.  The drive icons on the side of your desktop invoke finder windows.  Inside are folders which can be displayed with details or icons.  You can drag and drop just like windows.
    If you don't have drive icons on your desktop then click anywhere on the desktop and look at the top menu bar.  It will say "finder", now use the menu to select finder then preferences and turn on the icons.  You should also have a square blue "smile" icon on the dock which invokes finder.

  • What is the Java equivalent to Windows SystemMetrics?

    Hello,
    I would like to retrieve component metrics on items such as titlebar height, horizontal scrollbar height, default font etc.
    Unfortunately, I want to know the information without neccessarily having an instance of the control type visible (ie I want to know how high my forms titlebar will be before I create the form).
    The reason I need this is to feed information back to a third party product that requires the type of details that you could query from the SystemMetrics available in Windows.
    The tricky part is that the windows app needs to know these details before the Java app has created its first form.
    Any help would be much appreciated,
    thankyou, Sean.

    thankyou camickr,
    that link was very useful - please have the dukes.
    one thing that the link code doesn't give details about is how to find the metrics on the top level containers. Do you have any suggestions?

  • What is the Firefox equivalent of Windows' %username%?

    I'm trying to setup username variables in about:config, notably default download location and browser.cache.disk.parent_directory . When I use the standard %username% variable in these settings, Firefox interprets them literally. Does Firefox have an equivalent %username% variable?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Always

    An extension should be able to do that quite easily.<br />
    Try this code in the Tools Error Console.<br />
    You can create an extension to make the change.
    <pre><nowiki>const Cc = Components.classes, Ci = Components.interfaces;
    var PB = Cc["@mozilla.org/preferences-service;1"].getService(Ci.nsIPrefService).getBranch("");
    var PN = "browser.cache.disk.parent_directory";
    var curVal = PB.getCharPref(PN);
    var userName = Cc["@mozilla.org/process/environment;1"].getService(Ci.nsIEnvironment).get('USERNAME');
    newVal = curVal.replace(/%USERNAME%/i, userName);
    PB.setCharPref(PN, newVal);
    </nowiki></pre>

  • Archive & Install equivalent for Windows XP Pro

    I'm messing around with Windows for the first time (lifetime Apple/mac user) and am enjoying the wide software selection of things I basically cannot get on Mac. I've been downloading and buying a bunch of software that requires installation set-ups (some time-limited, one day only) and require serial number inputs.
    As I have been told before,i've been encountering a lot of problems with Windows and find myself reinstalling the software. If I do that, I have to hunt don and reinstall all the software and serials, and since some of them are one day only activations (from giveawayoftheday.com), are unable to be reinstalled.
    Is there a way to reinstall widows that preserves all the serials, etc.???

    that is not correct.
    Yes, you can reinstall over the old OS, but it will cause numerous problems. More problems than its worth.
    XP uses the registry to track files, associations, permissions, and a myriad of other things.
    But a registry rewritten by and OS reinstall will lose all that information, so while your programs will still exist in the "program files" directory, most of them will no longer function.
    Your user profile will still exist (and your data) but everything will have a new security ID, so you may or may not be able to access it.
    If you have installed security updates after the base windows install, then try to overwrite, you may get version conflicts when overwriting with an unmodified OS.
    This also applies to using the "R" (repair) option from the installer CD, as the repair will replace new files with old files, and usually results in an unstable (crash prone) system, or a BSOD on restart.
    In short, you are better off to backup your data, wipe the drive and start with a clean install. (wipe the drive and start clean)

  • What's the equivalent of Windows' Alt+F in OSX?

    Hi all,
    Noob questions... What's the equivalent of Alt+F (too choose the File menu) in OS X?
    -Al

    Hello again Al,
    Simple answer is:
    *Control+F2 then F-key*
    (or *control+F2 then FI* if there is another menu beginning with an F)
    Enable (keep it permanently enabled) Full Keyboard Access by hitting control+F1.
    Now you can use all control+F commands listed in
    System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts
    In your "alt+F" equivalent example, here's what you would do:
    Control+F2 then Arrow (left or right) then Arrow Down,
    and you can also type the first letter(s) of a command's name:
    Example in Safari, File menu:
    hit "P" to get "Page Setup"
    or
    hit "PR" to get "Print"
    Return key commands the action itself once you've reached it.

  • What's the Mac equivalent of Windows Print Setup?

    I can't find where in OS 10.8.5 applications like Numbers or Pages to set margins, page orientation (portrait/landscape), etc. as in Windows Page Setup facility. I also can't find where to set printing in color or B&W.

    The choice of color vs B/W and single sided vs duplex printing is all found in the print dialog -- exactly where in the print dialog is determined by the author of the printer driver software, but it will be in one of the drop down menus in that dialog. In Apple applications such as Pages and Numbers the page setup is found in the File menu or you can access it directly with Shift+Command+P. Margins can be set by going to the View menu and selecting the option to Show Rulers or you can click on the appropriate section of the Inspector pane on the right hand side of the Window. The Pages or Numbers Help section has a lot of tutorial material that will walk you through most of what you need to know.

  • Program Menu for mac equivalent to Windows Start Menu

    I have just spent 30 minutes trying to find an image scanner app that I downloaded when I first got the Mac 6 months ago, had no idea what it was called, so had to trawl through every single unknown app and folder in the Applications directory.
    In Windows, under the Programs menu, I used to have sub groups, such as Internet, Graphics, Audio, Utilities etc.
    Is there a way to have a menu group structure/pop up menu type system in Leopard, Ok so yo have the dock for regularly used apps, but I donot want shortcuts on it for every single app on the machine.
    Some sort of convenient groups menu system as in Windows that allows you quick access to rarely used apps ...especially ones that yoy have forgotten about, and cant user spotlight to find, since you cant remember their names!
    Either an app, or a a way of doing it within Leopard would be better.
    I have tried a few freeware ones, but wonder if anyone had any other suggestions that I may have missed

    I have already added several other apps of my own to the Utilities folder. i was wondering if I could create new folders within the Application folder and then drag them into there, but if you cant move the Apps that came with the OS, then that would get a bit messy.
    You can, but sometimes software update and the installers don't like it. So you should leave them alone. I suppose what you could do is;
    Make a new folder in your home folder somewhere called Apps.
    Create within that as many folders as you like with the categories you described.
    Create aliases by right clicking all the Applications you need to and move them into the subfolders in your new Apps folder.
    Put that folder in the dock.
    I had tried to create folders full of alises, but that does not work either, some apps do not give you the option to create an alias for them.
    For some reason some apps (Tag 0.4.1, GPSBabel, VueScan, SuperDuper, Carbon Copy, Chronosync etc ) when you right click on them do not show a 'Make Alias' in the contextual menu.
    Maybe it's a Snow Leo thing? I seem to be able to.
    Link seems to be incomplete.
    Sorry, the link was incomplete. Is good now.
