OS X Freezes and Beeps

Yesterday, my iMac froze and started beeping. Turned it off and back on, and then today it did the same thing again.
System Info says the RAM is OK, and an extended hardware test says that no problems were found in any of the hardware. So, I really don't know what it could be since as far as the software seems to be concerned, the hardware is fine.

Usually, this happens when there's a problem with the RAM - even though System Info says the RAM is fine.
If you have two DIMMs, take out one - then the other - to see if the problem persists. Then, unseat both DIMMs and reseat them. (Also, sometimes, if you have two different DIMM configurations (like 2GB &4GB) in the same computer, this can cause system irregularities.)
In any case, the standard solution to this is to take out your old RAM and replace it with new.

  • Mac Pro Freeze and Beep

My brand new Mac Pro freezes and just begins beeping about twice a day. It freezes in various programs. It will freeze sometimes in Final Cut Pro, sometimes in After Effects, sometimes in Photoshop, and sometimes in Safari. I have a Decklink Extreme card and I suspect this may be the problem. Has anyone elses experienced this and what should I do to fix it?

  • My 2011 15" Macbook Pro occasionally freezes and beeps loudly in groups of three. What is causing this?

This problem typically occured when I was doing something particularly strenuous, but I just recently had it happen while browsing the internet. The computer will suddenly freeze and start beeping loudly in groups of three with an LED on the front flashing in sync with the sound. I am running Snow leopar if that has any bearing on this problem. What exactly is causing this?

I did a few things to correct the problem First opened up my unit and cleaned it out really good and cleaned all the dirt and dust out Second I removed all the ram and cleaned all the ram connector and  ram connection points on the board Reinstall OS like a new system scratch and restored my applications Zapped SMC and pram And I'm running smoothly ever sice
At one single problem at all One more thing I got a laptop cooler and I run full-time now when using my system. I spoke to a techie and told me all MacBook Pros run very hot. It seems to run a lot better with the cooling fans going.
not a single problem ever since. Make sure you have the latest ML to, Some fixes to memory controller were added.

  • Mbp 2011 screen freezes and beeps

My 2011 MBP 13.3 will freeze, displaying short bars across the screen in columns, audio beeps three times in intervals.  I must hold the power button down to reboot.

    Some things you can try:
    1. Try a new user account, create one in System Preferences -> Users and Groups, test to see if the issue still persists in this new user account, this will give us a lot of information. (if the problem is the same or it vanishes, let us know)
    2. Make sure all your software is up-to-date, Apple Logo -> Software update.
    3. Unplug all 3rd party devices, just keep in the necessary, Power, Keyboard + Mouse, no ethernet or external hard drives etc.
    4. Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    5. Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    6. Boot to the recovery partition (CMD + R on startup until you see a spinning cog with an apple logo, then let go) -> Choose english as the main language -> Choose Disk Utility -> Select your hard drive from the left pane of Disk Utility (NOT Macintosh HD, the one that will look similar to: 1TB ST3200WAJS) -> Select the 'First Aid' tab -> Bottom right of the window it will say 'S.M.A.R.T Status: ________' ... What does it say after smart status?
    7. While still inside the Recovery Partition, select Macintosh HD -> First Aid (tab) -> Verify Disk -> Repair Disk (unless it says the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK) -> Verify Disk Permissions -> Repair Disk Permissions (if there are differing permissions on the disk)
Let us know if the issue still persists, but make sure you do all of those steps correctly and post back as much information as possible (PRAM takes two chimes at startup, unplug the power cable for 15 seconds, plug it back in, wait 5 seconds, turn on... make sure you follow all articles)
    Good Luck!

  • Freezing and Beeping and Stopping! Oh My! Please help!

My son has been getting frequent messages past day or so to "restart computer."
When I logged on, the iMac froze. So I pushed the start button until it shut down. Then it started beeping loud three times in a row, then pause, then 3 beeps again.
It wouldn't stop beeping, so I unplugged it. Then plugged back in, and it wouldn't start at all!! completely dead!
After a half hour or so, it started and seems to be working normally.
I ran verify disk and repair permissions, No problems found.
My iMac is about 5 months old. I added 4 GBs ram when first purchased, and it's been working fine for the whole time. Updated to 10.5.4 with no problems. No problems at all until this.
    Any ideas?

Thanks, You are Right!! it was a ram issue. Tried reseating and etc. Ran a software program "Rember" that tests ram, and my computer crashed.
Finally I took out the ram and reinstalled the factory ram stick that came with the computer. No problems since then.
I sent back the faulty RAM to Crucial, and they are sending me new RAM. Will report back after I reinstall the new RAM.

  • My macbook pro keeps freezing and beeping!! what do I do?!

I have a MacbookPro 13" and it keepsfreezing and it beeps 3 times.  I went to my local Apple Store and they said itmight be the RAM. But when they returned it to me it kept doing the same thing . Couldit be that my battery is bad and I need to replace it ??

Highly unlikely that this would be a battery problem.
Take it back to the store - I hope it is not too far - and tell them that whatever they did, did not resolve the issue. Calm, cool, collected demeanor is your friend here. Best thing is that any physical repair done by the store comes with it's own 90 day warranty, so if you paid for it once, you should not have to pay for it again.
    Best of luck.

  • My MacBook Pro (late 2011) freezes and beeps three times.

I have taken it to the Genius bar, and they said that everything was working fine, and that it passed all of the RAM and memory tests. It has been reseated by myself and the Genius bar as well, and still no luck. Any suggestions??

Run an Apple Hardware Test and see what issues it may pick up:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
Also you might download REMBER and run it to check the RAM.  In order to get a sufficient amount of loops, I suggest running it over night.

    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro Warranty Void and Beeping 3 times/freezing

    Hey guys,
I have a Macbook Pro and it recnetly started beeping three times intermittenly when I started it up and freexzing at the same time.
Sometimes it would work and then after a while of use it would freeze and beep but in the end it became more frequent and the laptop wasn't able to be used on a consistent basis.
I found that if I kept it still it would work for longer.
I have read that three beeps generally refers to a ram issue. I'm not too great with computeres so I wouldn't know if that was the reason why my laptop was doing it or not.
Anyway, I knew that I still had the basic one year warranty on it that comes with purchase so I rang apple and they told me to take it to a store called 'Next Byte'. So I did and after about 2 weeks I got a phone call today telling me that to fix it it is going to cost me $1800. In between his actual laughter at me he told me that logic board needs replacing. Yes, you read that right, he was actually laughing at me, like he thought it was funny. He also wen't on to tell me that I may as well just buy a new one. Well excuse me, and who are you?
Apparently there is visiable cosmetic damage. I know that this voids the apple warranty but I just think it is unfair.
Is there anyway that apple can prove that I caused the damage? I am not going to say that it is 100% conditon, I'm sure there are some bumps and scratches on it, but I truly don't think I have caused this issue. Is there anyway I can talk to someoene at apple who might be able to see if this was my doing?
And you know what else confused me, he told me the price to fix both the cosmetic damage and the hardware damage. But when I ask him how much it would be just to fix the hardward damgage he gave me a quote of $1100, so if he can tell me that he can just fix the hardware damadge that must me that the present so called "dents" on the laptop won't effect the new logic board, so how can they possibly be sure reason as to what has caused the issue with my laptop now? This is really frustraiting and I can't believe that I haven't even had my laptop a year and I have to pay the price of a whole other laptop to fix it.
    Please help!

Take it to Apple and ask them. They are the only ones that can tell you.
Three beeps usually indicates bad RAM.

  • MacBook Pro keeps freezing and being three times

My MacBook Pro laptop froze yesterday and started beeping three times at five second intervals. I shut it off and tried again with the same result. Now two time I have had to reset my date and time only for it to freeze and beep again. I don't know if it is the RAM since it doesn't happen when I turn on the computer but once it has been on for a few minutes. Help please!

  • I just got my Mac Pro repaired from Apple but I am experiencing the same issue: Screen freezes and shows funny rectangular bars. I shut it down manually and when I try to turn it back on it beeps 3 times. I know its the RAM but is there a way I can fix it

I just got my Mac Pro repaired from Apple but I am experiencing the same issue: Screen freezes and shows funny rectangular bars. I shut it down manually and when I try to turn it back on it beeps 3 times. I know its the RAM but is there a way I can fix it

If you just got it back and it isn't fixed or something else is wrong with it take it back and have them do the repair correctly.

  • IMac freezes and sounds 3 beeps since Mavericks update

I updated my iMac to Mavericks yesterday and now it intermittantly freezes and has three beeps.  I am forced to hold the power button in and then restart it.  I do not use Google Drive.  Any suggestions.  I know three beeps is supposed to be RAM related. But this only started happening the right after the Mavericks upgrade.

3 beeps indicate a RAM issue. If you upgraded the RAM yourself then please look at:
Failed RAM (RAM DIMMS can and do fail)
    Incorrect RAM
    Unseated RAM
If you did not upgrade the RAM then the issue may be failed RAM. The upgrade to Mavericks is almost certainly coincidence.

  • MacBook  Pro screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus?

I have a MacBook Pro running mavericks. Sometimes the screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus, software issue, water damage, etc? An error message usually appears after being restarted. It does it all the time please help.

No Virus. You have a Hardware Problem. 3 Beeps means a RAM problem. You could try Reseating the RAM is its sockets.
But that wouldn't necessarily cause the screen to Glitch Out, as you say.

  • MacBook Pro 8,2 freezes then beeps in group of three

    MacBook Pro 8,2 MD322xx/A 2.4Ghz (Late 2011)
    Mac OS 10.8.5
    16GB RAM
I just bought brand new memory (2x 8GB) from OWC and installed it about 4 days ago. I also just installed an MCE Optibay 256 SSD yesterday. I cloned the OS to the new SSD, and run my home folder from the HDD now. All file copying was done using Carbon Copy Cloner, latest version. I left it copying some other files from a separate external HDD last night and when I woke up this morning, the MBP was frozen and beeping in groups of three. Restarted and it worked fine for a few hours then did it again. Restarted and then I got about 5 mins of operation before it froze/beeped again. I then reseated the memory and reset the PRAM and SMC, which gave me a good few hours of freeze/beep free operation. Then I got the freeze beeps again, but this time with artifacts on the screen (see vid: http://youtu.be/iRJ7jUNQXno).
Googling my symptoms tells me that most people say this is a memory issue. But considering I ran fine for a few days with the new RAM vexes me. Because of that, I have a feeling it's the SSD, but I really don't know.

Sorry for not adequately reading your original post. If nothing showed up on memtest ( the same as Kelley Computing - Rember), then the modules are okay. How many walks did you perform? This isn't a RAM problem based on rereading your original post and watching that video. Yes, the start up beeps are different from randomly beeping machine already booted - the start up beeps are indication of components not passing the initial integrity check upon boot.
    1) Are you booting from the optibay SSD? Did you create a fusion? If so, nix this. The SSD is meant to be in your primary bay - a SSD optibay + DIY fusion configuration is a very volitile and buggy set up.
    2) I suspect there is something wrong with your logicboard based on that video and the intermittent beeps which are occuring. You could have damaged an internal component during the installation of these periphary components. The Apple Hardware Test will not reliably test your logicboard. The best chances for it to pick up any errors would be to run it 3X, back to back, extended.
    3) Connect your MBP to an external display to confirm that the display is not the issue. If the same artifacts appear on the external display, your GPU is producing the artifacts.
