OS X Hangs 3 times in a row

Hi,
I started having this problem yesterday. Basically OS X hangs "windows style". It means that the cursor stops responding, everything freezes... keyboard does nothing... trackpad does nothing.. mouse does nothing. Have to hold the power button down to force reboot.
I have been downloading 5 torrents using transmission and I had mail open also... all 3 times. First time I also had fusion 2 running an XP VM (using decidated 1.2GB) of my 4GB. But since I didn't run fusion the last 2 times this happened, I don't think it is fusion.
I upgraded my ram to OCZ 4GB 8500 DDR3 maybe 1 week ago, but I did not notice this problem earlier, so I'm not sure it is the RAM (but anyone know a good way to rule out ram for certain?... without swapping the RAM, since it is a pain)
I had SMART status FAIL on my scorpio black 320gb hd so I went and bought a hitachi... I put the hitachi in yesterday and then installed fresh OS X but had OS X copy all my files automatically from the scorpio which I attached via USB.
All files seemed to copy properly. And also, I think the failed hard drive only had problems writing sometimes - I never noticed problems reading when I was using it.
This hanging started only once I was using my hitachi.
Is it possible that OS X is corrupt in some way because I copied old data from my old HD using OS X installer option to do that?
When I installed OS X in this fashion, my iphoto '09 did not work - it would crash on load... so I applied all updates... still it did not work. All other apps worked, just not iphoto '09... I had to install ilife '09 again. Not sure if this means anything but thought I'd mention it.
Can anyone give me some idea what might be causing this and what I might do to fix it? Do I have to install OS X again? do I need to change RAM? Do macbooks sometimes have problems with 4GB RAM, even thought they support it?

I'm not sure how long it takes to hang since each time I went away from the computer for a couple of hours. But it is not an immediate hang. It takes sometime until it hangs and I just come back and have this surprise that I can't use the computer anymore.

Some times when I press the home button to read my finger the screen becomes black and it shows the Apple logo, this take a few seconds to get back the screen and this has been happening even 3 or 4 times in a row!
    What should I do?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • There is a lot of hang time opening and during the running of firefox. I only had 4 tabes open and it just hangs at different intrivals. It is really annoying.

Hang time for Firefox 16 every time I open the browser it hangs. Then it hangs intermittently while i am trying to work. It does this about 5 to 6 times during my work load. It only has 4 pages opened up. I normally like using firefox. However I am a tech and I push the limits of my laptop and my browsers. With Opera I have at least 20 tabs opened and when i re-open it it take less time for it to come up then it does firefox. All 20 pages are up and running while i am still waiting on firefox to get unstuck. I have gone into the settings and have tried to reset things. How am I supposed to do that when I can't even get the browser to respond because it is hanging there. I have to force close. I can't even get into the settings because once I do, It hangs and then the settings page is just sitting there for ever. I sat for 20 mins with it hanging just because I wanted to see just how long it was going to keep doing it. I have an AMD vision processor and using windows 7. with 4g ram. so what do you suggest. I like many of the features that firefox offers.....and have been a user for years...I would like this looked into please.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • I've gotten a kernel panic 4 times in a row while trying to reinstall lion osx from a flash drive to a reformatted hard drive.  How is this possible when there's "nothing" on my computer?

My SSD failed and I was instructed to reformat my hard drive and restore my files.  I erase my hard drive using Disk Utility and reinstalled Lion from a flash drive. While Lion is installing, I get a kernel panic.  That's happened now four times in a row and I'm befuddled because I don't have anything on my computer to conflict right?  Please help.

Do you think it's ram related?
No way to tell unless you test it.  Like I said kernel panics are usually hardware related.  Since your Macbook Pro is from the "2009" era, run the Hardware Test disc which you should already have - Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test

  • Windows update borking brand new server 3 times in a row...

    Hello all,
here's an interesting one for you all.
our company recently deployed a new server.
    server 2012 r2
    configuration
    setup
    all worked correctly
after all was done, updates were installed, afterwards the server would have a black screen of death over rdp and a slew of issues locally.
tried to remotely deploy http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2897632 which was supposed to address this.
    no go...
since this already happened 3 times in a row i'm not quite sure how to go about this apart from disabling updates or excluding the problematic one. alas not sure which one it is.
what should the next course of action be? restore backups or re-image are fruitless since the same update will render it bad all over again.

That is not a scripted answer. It might be that you have a driver that is not compatible with recent Windows Updates which might cause that: That is why I have made the previous suggestion.
I never heard about black screen issue after the one fixed by KB2897632. My recommendation would be to check with your server support if they have known compatibility problems for Windows Server 2012 R2 running on their hardware.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are the photos still visible in the Library? If so, Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
It’s possible that these crashes have damaged the database file. If the above does not help:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

Can someone tell me what 4 beeps 5 time in a row means. Wich part of my computer is saying that is not working. I have a HP core 2 duo and its making 4 beeps 5 times in a row when I try to turn it on . Beep 4x rest beep 4x rest beep 4x rest beep 4x rest beep 4x . Please help thanks

Do you have the side vibrate/ring switch fully engaged in one direction or the other?  If so, then it very well could be a hardware issue with the switch.  Visit to an Apple store genius bar would not be a bad idea to have it checked by the techs.

  • Hi folks! My MacBook Air is making awkward little chipping sound... For no apparent reason. My Macbook Pro does the same. Goes like "chip... chip... chip", always three times in a row, for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how this occurs? Thanks

Hi folks! My MacBook Air is making awkward little chipping sound... For no apparent reason. My Macbook Pro does the same. Goes like "chip... chip... chip", always three times in a row, for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how this occurs?
It seems to be linked to the sound being on. When I mute the thing, it doesn't do it. When I plug headphones into it, it does it over the headphones.
    Thanks for your help!

  • [SOLVED] submarine: only builds after running makepkg 2 times in a row

I just adopted and updated this package that wasn't updated in years: submarine.
Now, it works, but with a caveat...as the title says, I have to execute makepkg two times: the first one fails.
To be more precise, what I need to do is to execute make two times in a row; however, as the first make fails, makepkg exits with an error status.
Now, the question is: is there any way to force makepkg not to exit after the first make? Or, even better: do you suggest anything to improve this messy situation?
PS. currently the PKGBUILD only has one make in the build function, because putting two 'make's in there is useless (as makepkg exits after the first one).
PS2. There is a -git version of submarine too (here), but it has the same problems.

The upstream code is not much maintained nowadays, in fact there are several warning messages about deprecated functions used in Vala, but it works fine and it is still an useful software.
Both suggested solutions work, but I'll go with make -j1 because it looks more cleaner to me. Thanks for your responses.

  • To Hang Time

    1. Do you get paid by Apple to do this?
    2. if not, why are you so committed to this day and night all the time for years?

There is no one person or persons who is/are Hang Time. Hang Time is the code name for an Artificial Intelligence program created by Steve Jobs and Apple to instantaneously answer the questions from Garageband Users throughout the world at any time.
The more CPU power you have and the more RAM your computer has the more you can feed The Hang TIme program.
It love to snack on flash memory sticks.

    NLEdit,
Here's what I have (to the best of my knowledge):
Original source: mini DV tape, it's all HD
I use capture now to digitize the whole tape. My easy setup is: HDV- 1080i60 FiriWire Basic. After I have digitized all of it - it's an .mov file with the settings I just posted above. So when final cut is done digitizing I already have all the files in my browser window and I just drag them and drop them in the timeline and I choose to match the timeline settings if they're different. So my timeline settings look like this:
    Frame Size: 1440x1080
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Compressor: HDV 1080i60
When I'm done editing, I use batch export to export a bunch of sequences (they all have the same settings I just mentioned above) and I chose:
Format: QuickTime (custom), Compression Type H.264, frame rate: 29.97 fps, key frames: every 24frames, compressor quality- high, encoding: best quality. Then for size I choose either 1280x720 HD or I use "custom" to make them half the size of that so that would be 640x360. My point is to end up with an .mov file which I can then encode into an flv or just burn it on a data cd.
As for your question number 1: I'm not even sure what you mean by that.
Does all that make any sense now?

  • Since downloading Maverick I have a long hang time, computer crashes, can't use word and I can't access finder, why?

Since downloading Maverick I have a long hang time, computer crashes, can't use word and I can't access finder, why? Also, iTunes is horrible. While I'm listening to my music iTunes will just stop playing the song for at least 5 minutes and I can't force quit why does it do that? This is the first time I have ever felt like my iMac is just as bad as a PC and I wonder if Steve Jobs would have let the program be relase to the public with all the problems involved. No wonder Maverick was free. IT ***** BIG TIME!

    Hello, vanvu.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Since you are experiencing this issue with both a wired and wireless connection only on your home network and not at other locations, this issue would related to your router.  I would first recommend power cycling the router and testing the connection again.  If the issue persists, try updating your routers settings per the article below.

  • Hang Time...was it beginners luck??

About 6 weeks ago, I got some great advice from Hang Time regarding 'syncing up' Garageband with I-Movie. I got both I-Movie and Garageband recording and performed a 'hand clap' (audio spike) which showed up on both programs. I then dragged the I-Movie track onto Garageband's Movie Track, lined up the audio spikes and bingo... perfect sync. Hang Time... do you think I can get it to work now??? Not a hope. Very frustrating. I simply CANNOT get the audio spikes to line up. I've tried starting GB first, then immediately starting I-Movie. I've tried it the other way around too. I've tried 'creating a new project' in I-Movie, NOT creating a new project etc. No matter what I do I cannot get the audio spikes to 'line up'. One spike plays before the other. What am I missing (besides a brain?). Thanks.

One last comment today Hang. I also have Logic Pro which is a fabulous program. I think Garage Band is a poor choice of a name because it too is a killer program. Garage Band sounds kinda cheap. I know there are lots of people out there who haven't tried GB perhaps because they are unaware of just how amazing (and powerful) the program is. What I truly love about GB is how seamlessly it integrates with my Logic Pro. Just a dream tandem!!! Thanks for saving me hours of frustration with the 'uncheck snap to grid' advice Hang. ~Kingdominium
