OS X installation disk won't work

my brother recently gave me his old 2010 MacBook pro 13 inch. I went into disk utility and erased the disk so it would be factory reset. The problem now is that when I go to reinstall OS X Mavericks it's not available. I do have an installation disk which I had from my own MacBook which was stolen years ago but when I try to use it nothing happens. I've gone into the start up disk and the only available option is the installation disk. When I choose that it restarts and then comes to a screen that tells me to restart and that keeps happening. Is there any way to install an operation system? I feel like I've tried everything at this point for something that I feel should be so simple. Your answers are greatly appreciated.

So that disk is gray? Does it say 10.6.3 or maybe 10.6.4?
""Mac OS X cannot start up from this disk."
Open up Disk Utility and select partition.
Here's a good guide to walk you through the procedure:

Sounds like the GUID partition scheme is messed up.

  • Dreamweaver CS6:  Installation disk won't allow a change in the location of the installation folder

First, I hope the moderators will cut me some slack for making a duplicate posting.  The comments below were posted in the "Creative Suites" community.  I just noticed that there is a "Dreamweaver" community.  I feel the issues I've raised below are more relevant to the latter.
I recently purchased a Dreamweaver CS6 installation disk and have a valid registration code.  The Adobe website has recognized this code as valid.
I started-out  by having the installation disk install into a folder on a high capacity (0.5 tb) external drive.  This was done while my Gateway PC was still working properly.  I did a duplicate installation onto this hard drive (into a separate folder) to accommodate any work I wanted to do on a Dell laptop I also own.  For a few days things seemed to work ok on both computers.  Then the cursor on my Gateway stopped moving.  Several changes of mice failed to resolve the problem.  I've written-off my Gateway as "dead."  However the Dreamweaver CS6 installation MAY (I can't remember) be on a "local" folder on my Gateway and I am concerned I will have trouble installing Dreamweaver on the replacement I've purchased.  I understand one is limited to 2 installations.  If needed, can I purchase a license for a third installation?  And what might that cost?
After turning-off my Gateway I then went to my Dell laptop to try to work with Dreamweaver there.  I felt it was best to install on a "local" folder so I deleted all the Dreamweaver software from the folders on my external drive.  Unfortunately the installation disk is still "pointed" to the folders on my external drive.  To make matters worse I am now getting an error message which indicates I need to install into a folder on the "local" drive of my Dell laptop.  But the installation disk won't allow me to change the path.  On the installation disk the "path" to my external drive is faded-out and it will not allow me to delete and type-in a new path.
I've spent what, to me, are big bucks on this Dreamweaver disk.  It's the only website building software that seemed to get consistently good reviews. However, for me, Dreamweaver is becoming a nightmare!  I'm very much of a novice at website building.  I don't know how, in the world, I will be able to a)  Create something, and then  b)  Get Dreamweaver to put it onto what is now a blank webpage.  I recently got "Dreamweaver CS6 The Missing Manual" and "Dreamweaver CS6 For Dummies."  So far I haven't been able to find anything, in either of these two books, which addresses the issues I've raised here.
    Somebody--please help!!
Don't know if my screen name will show up.  So my name is JACK, near Old Faithfull.

Have you tried calling Adobe Customer service? They can deactivate one of your installations so that you can install and run on a new system. And perhaps they can help with your other problem, or send you to a tech support rep who can.
With regard to your use of DW, I'd strongly suggest that you take advantage of this downtime by learning as much HTML and CSS as you can absorb. Multiple sittings would be helpful. The more you know about those two, the easier DW will be for you when you eventually get it going.

  • I need to use an hp 6215 printer with my mac book pro.  the driver installation disk doesn't work.  where can i get a driver that will work?  i use OS X

i need to use an hp 6215 printer with my mac book pro.  the driver installation disk doesn't work.  where can i get a driver that will work?

With the Lion it is essentially unnecessary to resort to external driver disks. What's more, most of those disks are incompatible with the OS and should not be used. The system already carries a wide variety of printer description files (aka PPDs, which is what modern printing systems use as "drivers") for a lot of brands. And there was an HP printer update just two days ago.
Just checked in mine and did indeed find that the HP OfficeJet 6200 Series, with or without Fax, is covered with the latest update.
So just go thru the motions of creating a proper printer instance:
Make sure the Mac "sees" the printer on the network.
System Preferences / Print & Scan
Click on the + button on the left column
Select the appropriate type of printer, will use IP for the rest of this
Select HP Jetdirect - Socket, default for HP network printers
Type the IP address or look it up
Name the printer for easy identification on the print dialog
Let the Mac identify the printer model or manually choose the driver
    Click Add.
Once the instance pops up in the list, can click on Options & Supplies for further config.

  • HT203164 My newly installed burner works fine from i-tunes, except the burned disk won't work in my car CD player. The old burner's disks work just fine in the car. Please help.

My newly installed burner works fine from i-tunes, except the burned disk won't work in my car CD player. The old burner's work just fine in the car. Please help.

Using my new G5 I have the same problem, which I did not know using my old G4 with an external LaCie burner. The CD-Changer in my car is not able to read audio-cds, also my cd-player in my home hifi-system. The only way to play these audio-cds is (strange...) to put them directly in the main tuner of my car (usually used for the navigation cd), not using the Changer.
Maybe the problem really depends on the quality of the CD-Rs. I have used CD-Rs from Sony (it´s a brand, I think?) and will try Verbatim.

  • My USB external hard disk won't work anymore after I updated to 10.4.10

As I said in title since it's quite urgent to me. ALL of my files is in my external hard drive. It's format as FAT or FAT32 I can't remember since I use it between mac and PC. More than that IT IS WORKING FINE UNDER PC. Before updating to Mac 10.4.10 I used my hard disk fine till I updated to this version. I plug in my usb port and after a hours it still won't be detected. I can find my hard disk in finder or desktop. I have tried plug my hard disk to other MacBook or Mac Pro but still won't work anymore. However it's working fine under PC or when I started my MacBKPRO as WindowsXP under bootcamp, my hard disk is working fine, too.
I have search this forum and seems someone have got the same problem as I face. I don't know what to do...and I feel so disappointed to Mac.

As Mac OS X has no known viruses in the wild, that leaves you with one of three possibilities.
    1. When connected to the Windows machine, a virus has written over a critical boot block area which allows the drive to become crossplatform. Get the latest Windows virus detection software and make sure the drive is clean of Windows viruses.
    2. The firmware that allows it to communicate driverless has become corrupted on the drive case. Replacing the drive case itself will eliminate that problem, as suggested earlier.
    3. The directory damage is just enough that the boot block itself is damaged. Backup any critical data from the drive onto the Windows machine first, and run Alsoft Disk Warrior 4.0 to repair the directory and see if that works.
The fact that Mac OS X 10.3.9 won't read it basically eliminates this as a 10.4.10 problem. Only a boot block or firmware issue like this could make a drive not readable on one platform, but readable on another.
P.S. please note the nomenclature of Mac, versus MAC on this user tip, as it appears you haven't learned it:

  • Premiere Pro 2.0 Installation Disk Won't Read

I had to re-format my hard drive and when re-installing Premiere Pro 2.0 I found that my installation disk will not read in my DVD drive!  Nothing is wrong with my drive.  It reads all other DVDs just fine.  I get nothing in the directory like the disk isn't there.  It's not a disk problem because they have been stored in excellent condition, and not only will the installation disk not run or open, but neither will the accompanying Total Training Video Workshop disks.  I am completely dumbfounded.  When I purchased this program about 6 years ago off Ebay I had the old 1.5 version on my computer, and had to enter the old registration key along with the new one for 2.0.  Is it possible I have an UPGRADE-ONLY copy here instead of the actual full program?  It's in the shiny new box and all and doesn't say anything on it about it being an upgrade, so it seems legit.  And if it was, in fact, just an upgrade-only program, would that cause the disks not to be read at all in the drive??  I need help on this one because I make my living off editing, and I'm sitting on 3 projects for clients that I cannot deliver on time to get paid, nor have I been able to afford to buy a new CS version.

I have about 8 different burners on my systems, and some will read DVD's better than others will. On my workstation, I have one LG and one Plextor. The LG does the best, and when it fails, the Plextor usually can read. When this happens, I just do a Copy from the drive that can read the disc, to the other drive, using Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden blank media. If neither can read, I have six others to try. Sometimes, it's just the burner.
One little hint would be to make sure that your burner's firmware is updated to the very latest. That can improve the burner's ability to read from a slightly damaged disc.
Otherwise, contact Adobe. For many programs, they sell replacement media. Do not know if there are version limitations, but one call should give you what is available.
    Good luck,

  • Bootcamp - Windows installation disk won't read

I have a late-2011, 13 inch MacBook Pro and I am running OS X 10.9.3 with all the latest updates. I am trying to use Bootcamp to runs windows but the windows disk isn't be read by my laptop. I run Bootcamp, it downloads the latest support software but when I put the windows installation disk in; it starts to spin up, makes some noises like it is being read, then it ejects the disk. Anybody have this problem, or now a way around it?

  • Service Desk 6.2 Installation/Update won't work

    Hi there,
we have ServiceDesk 6.1 installed on SLES 11 SP1 and try to update to 6.2.
As described in the manual I uninstalled the appicacation using the uninstaller and installed the new one with the java installer. No errors so far... only the message "your Service Desk URL is..." is empty.
After the installation went through I have no website on the defined port that answers my requests. Netstat tells me that there is no application listening in the defined port.
Even if I manually start the startup.sh shell script nothing is listening after that on the port.
If I remve Service desk 6.2 and install Service Desk 6.1 instead, I get the same message with the empty URL hint at the end of the installation, but the website works and listens on the defined port. I can then again configure the access to the db server.
So my question is what am I doing wrong?
Perhaps anyone here has a hint for me? Would be great as I am at the moment a little bit frustrated. :-(
    Thanx, Andy

Sorry, i didn't experience the problems you see. I started with 6.1 and followed the update procedure for 6.2. For the installation/setup part i had no problems at all.
Usability is something completely different, though...

  • Installation Disk Won't mount

I am trying to install Photoshop Elements 10 from the DVD installation disk. Why is it being ejected before mounting? Other disks mount fine.

It's possible you have only a CD drive. Apple has an exchange program to swap your DVD for CDs.

  • SATA Disk won't work without a IDE disk connected.

    Hi, my specs :
    k8n neo2 platinum
    amd xp3000+
    crucial 3200 ddr memory
    Samsung Spinpoint S-ATA 160GB
(IBM 70GXP IDE 40GB) Just in the box to make the S-ata drive work
    NEC DVD-RW
I've been running this machine now for 3-4 months, with both HDD's. Today I decided to remove the noisy IBM disk from the system. I removed it from the Primary IDE Slave and made the DVD-RW stay alone on the Primary IDE.
So, now the only thing I got installed is the S-ATA disk on SATA3 or SATA4 slots.
and the NEC DVD-RW on Primary Master.
    The problems starts here
Now my machine only goes to bios and stops because : INSERT SYSTEM DISK blablabla...
My SATA disk is properly displayed in BIOS as a working HDD. No problem there... I have tried everything, believe me... Everything that can be done... I have changed the Sata disk to all diffrent SATA slots, 1/2/3/4 and Cleared the BIOS, resetted the bios you name it.
But, when i install the IDE disk (ibm disk) on the Primary Slave IDE, everything works well!
PS: The IBM disk is just a MP3 disk that doesn't store anything else than that.
But!, in Windows, the IBM disk is named C:\ and the System disk (on the S-ATA drive) is named D:\ (no problems running WinXP at all with that issue)
This is really annoing, like i'm going to have that noise IBM disk in my chassis forever!

Your problem is that you had the ide disk connected when installing xp on the sata (3'rd master).
Windows_inst always use a disk on 1'st or 2'nd ide channel as system drive if it finds one (the first it sees) . So the ntldr,boot.ini,ntdetect.com is placed there .
When you remove the IBM drive there is no boot drive anymore .
What you should have done when installing windows to the sata drive
is to temporary disconnect all drives in front of it , so that the sata 3'rd master
is the first disk win_install sees .
Now you have registry of all programs and such pointing to D: in that win installation.
You should take the time to do a fresh new install with only the sata drive connected . This makes it system drive and it's partition C: .

  • Windows Vista Home Premium Recovery Disks won't work

Have original disks for this Toshiba A215.  The hard drive failed so put in new hard drive. Got the missing boot manager message. so a tecn person used a cd and reformated the new hard drive. Still wouldn't run the recovery disks to install to factory defaults.  the Windows Vista sticker still on the computer with the activation code. So borrowed an install disk from a friend, but won't activate. Says it's not a valid activation code.  and still won't recognize my recovery disks. starts to run the recovery program then gives message - cannot enumerate.  What does it want to enumerate??

    cannot enumerate.
Try resetting the BIOS from AHCI mode to IDE or Compatibility or whatever you find there.
Most likely the trouble is caused by a hard disk with advanced-format technology. After restoring, there will be more to do.
Which Satellite A215? Always tell us that. There is a label on the bottom.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
