OS X keeps changing my hostnames

I have an iMac and a Macbook. For both of them, OS X has added -<digit> suffixes to the hostnames at some time which complete stuffs MobileMe synching.
My macbook now ends in -3 and the iMac ends in -2.
Why does it do that? And how can I stop it?
It is really giving me the toms. I am about to head out the door for a week on the road and I find out that neither machine has been synching to mobile me for some time, so a bunch of address information, keychain stuff and other important gear is out of date, and when I try to synch, mobileMe thinks the machine has never been seen before and wants to do a merge. For both of them. I shudder to think how many dups I will get in - well - everything.
This is Microsoft-style thinking - people doing stuff without discussing it with others to consider the consequences. Gotta be right up there with focus-grabbing applications for bad behaviour.
Any thoughts on how to stop this happening?

This happens when there is more than one Bonjour device on the local network with the same name, or claiming to have the same name. You can stop it temporarily by launching the Activity Monitor application on each Mac, finding a process with the name "mDNSresponder", and force-quitting it. It restarts automatically. You can then restore the name in the Sharing preference pane.
For a permanent fix, you'll have to figure out where the name conflict is coming from.

[SOLVED] Network interface name keeps changing

My network interface name keeps changing between wlp2s0 and wlan0. This is a real pain, since I never know what name will be generated at boot. Most of the time it's called wlp2s0, so this is what netctl is set up to handle by itself. At boots were wlan0 is generated I have to connect manually.
I've tried making the name static by adding a rule to the /etc/udev/rules.d/10-network.rules. The rule i added was:
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", ATTR{address}=="48:5d:60:7e:64:e9", NAME="wlp2s0"
Wlp2s0 is generated at boot alright, but I still have to connect manually with this solution. As if the "new" wlp2s0 is not recognized as the old one (same MAC). What gives?
This is on an Asus Eee 1001PXD, with the Qualcomm Atheros AR9285.

I've now been able to replicate the issue, and run the command:
journalctl -b
I did find the output:
mai 18 02:30:02 <hostname> systemd-udevd[126]: error changing net interface name wlan0 to wlp2s0: Device or resource busy
I haven't been able to process the whole output yet (I'll continue tomorrow if necessary), but I've found some things that I hope will clearify things. I get similar outputs to the following a lot throughout:
mai 18 02:30:03 <hostname> dhcpcd[237]: wlan0: carrier lost
mai 18 02:30:03 <hostname> dhcpcd[237]: wlan0: waiting for carrier
mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: [email protected]: control process exited, code=exited status=1

mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.

mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Reached target Network.

I see now that this is later in time, so that's not so strange after all. I'll look some more.
EDIT2:
The error code that a name change i impossible is the first time the term 'wlan0' occurs in the log. However there's a line much earlier that talks about wlp2s0:
mai 18 02:29:59 <hostname> systemd[1]: Expecting device sys-subsystem-net-devices-wlp2s0.device...
But as I said, if this information doesn't help, I'll have a closer look at the output tomorrow. Getting late here in Norway now.

Rename (Change of Hostname) of Cisco ISE Appliances !!!

I am having the two Cisco ISE (Version: 1.1.1.268) appliances. These appliances are running in Failover with the internal CA signed certificates.
The hostnames are 19 character long with Upper cases and Hypen. Boxes are joined to the domain but freqently used to disconnect after sometime. After some investigation, we came to know that AD can accept only the 15 characters long hostname... thats the reason, one of the appliance keeps disconnected. Also, sometimes, the authentications donesn't works properly.
My question is that how to change the Cisco ISE Appliance hostnames without impacting the production and hassle?
Send me the steps in detail, or it is just a matter to change the hostname and register with DNS with new names and regenerated the certificates...???

Hello Mubasher-
I recently had to do this and I want to warn you to be careful. I had to rename 4 hosts and out of 4 of them only 1 remained useable. The other hosts had to be re-built For some reason ISE nodes get very unhappy when trying to change certain things (Hostnames, timezone, etc) Also, keep in mind that even if the renaming goes well you will still impact the environment as the nodes will restart.
Here is what I did when I made the change:
1. Disjoin the ISE nodes from the domain
2. Ensure that their computer name is removed from AD
3. Update DNS records
4. Ensure that DNS records have replicated
5. Change names on ISE
6. Join nodes to the domain

XServe identity keeps changing

I'm not sure how it happens exactly (probably when I'm making changes to the DNS server UI), but my Xserve at 72.70.42.18 , which I want to be:
xserve.compusmiths.com
keeps becoming (for instance)
xserve.lincolngutters.com
(one of my client sites). Not a problem, they are all the same IP address, but when I add a user the system wants it to be on xserve.lincolngutters.com instead of xserve.computersmithsconsulting.com, etc.
I've looked at hostname, and the reverse DNS is OK (now), how do I change what the UI fills in?

On a server... always use sudo changeip to change your hostname.
Do a "man changeip" for more info on running the command but here's an example.
For a stand alone server... sudo changeip - 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.2 old.domain.com new.domain.com
Type your IP to the server in both spots (192.168.0.2) since you aren't changing that.
If your hostname is automatically changing, I would say there is something in your DNS causing that. Check to see if there is an 72.70.42.18 IP set to be xserve.lincolngutters.com

How can I change the hostname after Oracle Database XE is installed?

I currently have XE installed and working on my ubuntu machine.
When I change the hostname of my machine, oracle database no longer connects and says "ORA-12505, TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor".
Can anyone tell me how I can change the hostname of my machine and keep oracle database working correctly?

Stopping, reconfig, starting the instance is one way, although that is somewhat like using petrol to kill ants.
The database instance pretty much does not care about the hostname setting. But the listener does- the installer finds the hostname and uses that in the setup bits.
As posted somewhere here, when using the 1521 default listener port, the listener.ora config file can just be moved out of the way. Another potential fix is setting the HOST=0.0.0.0 for the IPv4 "any IP" address setting, or setting it to the correct hostname. Or HOST= can be set to IPv4 address. For IPv6, have to use HOST=<hostname> and it must resolve, can't HOST=... an IPv6 address.
To move the listener file, stop the listener first. To change a HOST=... setting, also stop the listener first.
lsnrctl stop
mv $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.bk0
# or
vi $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora
# change HOST=<whatever> to the correct value, or 0.0.0.0
lsnrctl start
sqlplus /nolog
conn system
... password ... Connected.
alter system register;
exit
# start the lsnr
lsnrctl start
# check the status, services
lsnrctl stat
lsnrctl serv
If the host has a wireless (or another NIC) that one does not want to offer up remote connections on, the 0.0.0.0 is not a good way to go either

Status keeps changing from invisible to online: why the issue is ignored?

There is a serious issue raised in the parallel thread, which is critical for many people: "Status keeps changing from invisible to online" (initiated on ‎16-11-2014 by b.agne, Mac section). In short, when starting using a device, the Skype status changing from "invisible" to "online" - sometimes just for a moment, though enough for others to notice you. These affects very much any type of devices. I am sure the issue has already led to multiple personal crisises and potentially financial losses due to buseness partnership issues (I came close to that myself, and now use anything but Skype for business). The question is: WHY the issue is completely ignored by Skype, Microsoft and expert comunity? Please post the solution if anybody knows how to fix the issue, or suggest how to make Microsoft to know that it should be fixed. Kind regard...

Hi, I also have the same issue. I change the status to Invisible and a later on it is already as "Online", without having even touched/opened Skype. The only way that I see this may happen is that I have the app installed on the smartphone, but before it never had this issue, but from some month ago it started. I would restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod on your computer and start over. It appears the iPod is associated with another account. Any media that came with the iPod does not belong to you and di not transfer with the iPod hardware.

After upgrading to 10.8.3 my display keeps changing to 800x600 after it wakes up from sleep. I have to go to preferences and set again, and it works. It is quite annoying. Any clue.

No, an external drive will not always be mounted. If the drive goes to sleep, it can unmount, or it may unmount for other reasons. As Chris said, confim that the drive is mounted and active before launching iTunes.

Calendar colors keeping changing to purple

one specific calendar keeps changing by itself to purple. even when i change it back to the color i want, it goes directly back to purple. this happens on my ipad and when accessing icloud on my mac book

It seems that my green work calendar is now purple as well.
In the past work was a light green and personal was a slightly different shade of green. Now it is purple, not my favorite color but it is distinct. It would be nice to pick you own colors
I am an ical user, rarely do I sign in using icloud via the net however this is how all my devices are linked
This happened a while back and then reverted, if Apple would just have some notices of this at least we would know there is nothing wrong. I am getting concerned that my data is not safe !

I called Apple and they said that they know about this problem. It's a problem with iCloud which their Engineers know about. (there was a new iCloud release, hence...) No ETA for a fix yet. I asked that this be escalated so Engineering doesn't put it at the bottom of their fix list. I talked to a Senior Advisor and mentioned to them to have QA check their regression tests as this has happened before to me (the problem just didn't take this long to resolve). I like to use green too for important stuff, so I've resorted to creating a new calendar using the normal calendar green for events going forward. They could have picked another color besides green to have this problem with and I wouldn't have been so upset. ;-)

Why does the color on my calendar keeps changing colors on its own

I have several color coded calendars for each family members. My daugther's calendar all of a sudden changed from green to blue (which is my son's) by itself. I changed it back to green and it automatically changed back to blue again. This happened once before a while back and after I keep changing back the color, it corrected itself eventually.

Safari 5.1.2 keeps changing text field randomly on text input

Hello everybody.
Safari keeps changing the text field on input, do you know how to correct this issue?
Here is an example:
Let's say I load www.google.com, it appears in the safari window as usual.
Suppose I begin to type a search in the google search field at the top right of the safari window (not the one on the google page)
if when doing this the sentence is long for the search, at some point randomly, the rest of the text will be entered this time in the google search text field on the google page! (which is the very next text field) So when I hit enter it makes google search half of my request...
Safari changed the text field I was into with no warning. I want to say I do not press tab at any moment.
This is annoying really, and this does not appear anywhere else than in Safari. It seems the issue is not systematic, but appears quite often.
I have no universal access setting except "enable access for assistive device"
I had to check this box upon installing a software in the past but I can't remember what it was.
Perhaps the problem I have is linked to some window refreshing?

Try deleting the cache associated with Safari ...
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db.
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari to test.
I had to check this box upon installing a software in the past but I can't remember what it was.
Open System Preferences > Universal Access
Make sure the box next to: Enable access for aassitive devices is deselected.
