OS X Kernel and Little Snitch

Hi All
Just bought Little Snitch and find that Mac OS x kernel has intermittent connections. What is this about and should i be allowing it?

Hi, most likely, but have you checked the several Preferences that might use Internet, like...
Network Time?
Software Update?
etc., etc., etc.?
Oh, and Dashboard calls home too still I think.

I normally advise against Little Snitch: it delves very deep in the OS core so it does not add to security and can more easily lead to security issues than without it.
You must be a power user with special interests to use such a software.

Planetlab and little snitch.

So I run little snitch to keep an eye on my network traffic. Since installing Leopard I get messages like this:
+The application "kernel_task" wants to connect to planetlab-2.EECS.CWRU.Edu on TCP port 3125 (an13-an)+
Anyone familiar with this? I think it's a distributed computing thing, but could be anything. Any reason Leopard would want this?
I had a feeling my system was compromised a while back, so I worry about security...
Any ideas that can help (or just put my mind to rest) would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I don't like to set any permanent rules with Little Snitch because the more you have, the slower things will get (this info comes from the developer).
I am more interested in finding out how to stop it as opposed to merely hiding it from my view. Thanks, again.

i have this sorted, a misunderstanding it was not xdefender trying to connect with apple it was XProtect Updater from apple.

I installed little snitch and i get this message that dahsboardadvisoryd wants to connect to www.apple.com.edgekey.net
so I want to know what is dashboardadvisoryd and should I allow it to connect forever

It checks to see if updates are available for your Dashboard widgets. If you think that's useful, allow it to connect when it wants.

Does anyone know what is Little Snitch and is it safe to use

I had an email from a friend who mentioned about Little Snitch to prevent keyloggers, is it safe to use. If it is not I can relay this information back to my friend
who was just about to install this software. Prevention is better than cure

The way to prevent keyloggers is to not allow anybody else admin access to your Mac, since that's about the only way a keylogger could get there.
What Little Snitch will do is prevent a keylogger that is installed on your Mac from communicating to the outside world over your network.
I've been using it since v1.0, I believe and it's very safe as long as you know what you are doing. I would also mention that it's a bit of a PITA to initially set up as it will ask your permission for almost every appication and process that needs to communicate over your network. You will find some processes that you aren't aware of that must be given permission or they won't work. You will probalby need to Google some of them to find out exactly what they are before making a decision.

Little snitch and firefox trying to go out when not asked

On my minimac 10.4.11 I am running little snitch. It often tells me :
"firefox-bin wants to connect to addons.acelb.sj.mozilla.com on TCP port 443 (https)"
the confusion I am having is that firefox is not open, at least not on my user account. There are 3 others and sometimes they are still open.
I looked at my preferences , account and the login items does not list Firefox.
Anybody know if I should be concerned with this? I usually just tell it no for now.
My main browser is Safari but sometimes firefox is necessary so I haven't checked the never box

That is normal if running in any account, it wants to check if any addons have needed updates. Nothing to worry about really, but you can Deny it Forever, then Change the setting easily, or check for updates at their site.

Little Snitch and my mistake, maybe...

i love little snitch. but i wonder if i have accidently told it to stop apple (system) doing something it should.

Gerry, I'm pretty sure it's a per user basis. I have tried it out and it's monitored my traffic but not my sister's traffic although she's using the same airport express as I am. She'd need to install it herself to see results.

I Downloaded the Little Snitch Trial, and I Want To Get Rid Of It. How?

so I have the Little Snitch trial. (an app that shows your network usage and stuff) There is no way I can quite it or stop it or delete it or anything
ZERO search results come up when i search little snitch in finder
it is not in the preferences of my mac.
I just want to get rid of it! it sits in my menu bar, and when i click it it displays the following..

Little Snitch and Leopard

Apparently, Leopard's firewall looks at outbound traffic as well as inbound. Is anyone using Little Snitch with Leopard? Any problems?

This article is incorrect. The firewall deals only with incoming connections.

Little Snitch

Since I upgraded to Leopard I get these Little Snitch "allow or deny" windows popping up constantly, annoying as ****... So questions:
1. Does anyone know what Little Snitch really does and if it is important and needed?
2. How do I stop these pop-up windows with "deny or allow" or shouldn't I?
3. How do I know what to deny and what to allow?
4. What the **** is this kernel stuff which is the thing that wants to connect to all kinds of things?
Lot's of q's, yeah I know, any answers are appreciated!

Hi' If you allow little snitch to run it runs in the background doing a check and should not effect you at all. If however you wish to be done with it, go to applications in finder, highlight the little Snitch app and send it to Trash. You can always download it again in the future if you think you need it.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air won't boot after installing Little Snitch 3. Grey Screen.

I think the answer is probably that my SSD is toast but here's the symptoms in case anyone else has experienced this.
I installed Adobe Lightroom and also got round to upgrading my Little Snitch license and finally putting it on my 11" Air (mid 2011, latest version of Lion) as I use the computer more often than my Pro. After restarting as LS requires I was met with the grey Apple logo screen with no spinning gear. I forced a shut down and started again, again the logo screen, no spinning gear. I tried booting in to safe mode and got only a grey screen, then I tried booting in to recovery mode and got the Apple Logo again. I also tried cmd + C and alt/option with an external DVD drive and Snow Leopard with no luck
Then I tried a SMC reset, after that I started up and only got the Logo again. I reset the PRAM and the main effect of that was to reset the system volume to max so now I can hear the POST chime but also since the PRAM reset I get only the grey screen and no further. I tried to boot from a USB Lion recovery but only the grey screen. I have also tried booting with cmd +S with no luck either. Internet recovery doesn't work either.
The keyboard seems to be completely unresponsive, the caps lock key doesn't light up at all and I've a feeling that it's either something as simple as a problem with the keyboard or the SSD is kaput. I think that Little Snitch is a coincidence as there's nothing like this anywhere on the web as far as I can tell with Google and there doesn't appear to be anything on these forums that quite matches, especially the part about not being able to use and alternative boot method.
Anyone out there got any ideas?

The fans only kick in when the machine freezes.
I updated from Snow Leopard to Lion using the App Store. The install was successful and worked for about 30 mins then the unresponsive behavior started. Once I rebooted, I received the issue previously stated above (i.e., the trackpad and keyboard is unresponsive).
I've also tried booting using the Option key and choosing the Recovery Mode. Once in Recovery Mode the same crash happens (i.e., the trackpad and keyboard is unresponsive)

Little Snitch Upload Problems?

I have a IMac Core 2 Duo 3.06ghz. It runs programs such as Final Cut Pro. A few months after I got it, I started having this file upload error, where whenever I upload a photo or doc to my Yahoo Mail or Youtube or any other site, it says file upload error on each site or another canned message. However, If I try and upload something on Windows Live Mail or Facebook, I have no problems. I'm assuming because this is flash. Any ideas?
Update 1: All my software is up-to-date date. I'm using Safari. Same error in Google Chrome.
I also found some unprepared disk permissions just a few mins ago
It says in 12 pages a lot of bad permissions. They all have to do with my Airport.
I don't want to repair them though because I'm using Little Snitch on some of my files for security. I'm afraid it will mess with some of these settings.
It is crucial I have these in tact.
Update 3: BTW, I just went into software update. It can't check updates because of a "network problem". I never had this error before. Any ideas?

Just for general information, these are user to user forums, so until someone sees your post who has some actual information, it may take a while for someone to respond.

If you have a problem with permissions, you should repair those. I don't know why you'd think it would mess up things - repairing permissions fixes them.

I don't use Little Snitch, but I would suspect that you have a setting there that is preventing your uploads as well as your communication with the Apple server. Hopefully someone using that app will chime in here on that.
So, until someone using Little Snitch can chime in, I would suggest you try turning it off for a short while; repairing your permissions, and then try to upload your videos. If it works, then you'll know the culprit and will need to adjust some settings there. If it doesn't, at least we've eliminated it as a source of the problem.

SystemUIServer wants to connect to Port 192 via Little Snitch

Hey everyone...
Over the past couple of days my Little Snitch program has been reporting that "SystemUIServer" wants to make a UDP Connection to my router (192.168.2.1) via port 192.
This message only appears after I've booted up the computer and only has been coming up recently.
I installed the latest version of Little Snitch (2.1.4) last week but am not sure why the "SystemUIServer" process wants to connect to my router via port 192 just now out-of-the-blue.
Am I okay in putting a new rule into Little Snitch to allow this request "Forever" or should I be worried?

Is that the IP of your router? If so, it's most likely normal.
It may be some kind of data transfer between your router and the computer.
Does it happen with a direct Ethernet connection and WiFi or only one?
It's listed as OSU Network Monitoring System.
You might block it and see what happens.
Just click on the yellow triangular menu item for LS and turn it off forever and see if you notice anything not working correctly.

Apple remote desktop can click little snitch

I have set up apple remote desktop over the net and I am trying to admin the computer but when I am trying to run a program, I can not control little snitch firewall and click to let the program connect to the internet. why cant apple remote desktop click the settings in little snitch that pop up when an app wants to connect to the internet? I thought we were suppose to have total control?

I have observed the same problem with Little Snitch on the client Mac. Everything else on the client is responsive except the LS dialog box. To get around this, I have opened System Preferences -> Little Snitch and turned it off on the client. You just have to remember to turn it back on when your done.
It's not a solution, just a workaround...
