OS X Leopard 10.5 can't start installation on iBook G4

I recently bought a used iBook g4 from a friend of mine and it is in good condition, aside from the battery, meaning it only works when Plugged in to charge. I tried to install os x leopard 10.5 from the DVD, but after clicking continue when prompted to restart the computer to continue installation, it goes to the white screen with gray apple logo and spinning wheel, and never leaves that screen. I have tried resetting PRAM, holding c while booting, checked the filesystem (fsck -y) and nothing works. Also, when I use disk utility to check the install disk, it says it can't be verified, but I also can't repair the disk. Please Help! I don't want to have wasted money and time on this laptop!

The full retail Apple Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 DVD from Apple is the method and license.
Since the Installer is a bootable volume on the DVD, it has to run the computer, or be of significant ability to be seen by the computer as a valid and complete volume capable of the installer, when it is not, it will not work.
And a download OSX version of an older system or even a newer one, may contain errors or parts not originally intended to be in the system, and there was not an official full retail download of Leopard 10.5; only an update Combo 10.5.8 download, requiring a pre-existing correctly installed lower version of Leopard 10.5.
There is almost no way to tell if the download was anything valid, or where the source you got it from, got their illegal copy from. Do not use it.
Good luck & happy computing!

It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition.  Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot.  Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot.  If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that.  Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML.  If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again.  However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too.

  • Can not start installation of Solaris 8

(-: frenchee having pb with english speaking, please be nice : I still try to solve it ;-)
On my Ultra1 creator, there is "ultrapenguin" a release for ultrasparc of Linux RH 5.2.
I put the CD which I downloaded from "sun download center" ; I start the sun ; I press "stop+A" ; I send "boot cdrom" command ; it reply "can not start with file and args given" or something like that...
The same procedure works fine with the install CD of RedHat 5.2 or with the install CD of Debian Potato (all for sparc, of course).
    What is wrong ??
    Thanks by advance !

    YES I did !!
I found the solution last sunday : one of my friend give me an old version of Solaris (2.6) with the entire docs and packaging.
In these docs, I found the command I (and you) have to type if you want to run the installation :
    after [stop]+[a], type the line
    boot cdrom - browser
then, come back here and say to all (and to Sun corp) that a little readme file on the CD would be nice... ;-)
    Thanks to all.

  • Can't start installation of Adobe Captivate 3

When i try to install Adobe Captivate 3, the first setup
windows "Title: Adobe Captivate 3 - Setup" this is the "Welcome to
the InstallShield Wizard for Adobe Captivate 3" have two choice:
    - Next or
    - Cancel.
If we click on the Next button, the same windows appear,
again and again the only thing we can do is Cancel the
installation. I did'nt receive any error message.
    PC Configuration:
We use Windows XP Pro SP2 French ( I already try with an
    english version ).
    Adobe Flash Player 9
I try it on a fresh install of Windows Vista (on a new HP)
    and have the same problem.
Try with the demo version of Captivate 3 and with the
    original CD, same problem.
    Thanks for your help.

    We found the problem.
The "Regional Setting" prevent the installation to start
    properly.
( We use a French version of Windows XP Pro with "Regional
Setting" set to "Français - Canada" )
If we place it to "English - US" the installation can be
    completed with no error.
Maybe we can replace it to "Français - Canada" (or to
your specific settings) after the installation have
    been completed.
Alors bonne chance à vous amis français !

  • Can't start installation

Apologies if this is already covered. When I get to the screen inviting me to choose a drive to install OSX, I get the following message, with a yellow exclamation mark: "You cannot install OSX on this volume without changing your installation settings". Clicking on 'options', I am told "The destination disk must be erased for installation". This is the volume that already has Tiger 10.4.10, and all my files on. It will allow me to install it in a separate hard drive installed in my Mac Pro (and onto my MacBook Pro) - but I want it on my main drive - which is, incidentally, OS extended journaled.
    Any ideas? Many thanks!

Things to try, assuming you have a bootable backup/clone. First, boot the machine with the Tiger install disk, launch Disk Utility, and repair the disk and permissions. Run the Apple Hardware Test program that came with the machine, extended tests. If it passes, run Rember on the RAM. Reinstall the latest COMBO update, restart, and repair permissions. If everything checks out, update the backup/clone, then give the Leopard installer another go.
If you get the same message, file a bug report via Apple's Bugreporter system. Join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report.

  • Can I start up my new imac (Snow Leopard) from a Tiger installation disc?

Last week I upgraded to an entirely new machine. My old imac was running on Tiger and the logic board failed. Though I had an external, I had my local Apple store transfer my hard drive data to my new mac. Since then, I've run Disc Utility a few times, each time with no problem until today.
Disc Utility is giving me the following error:
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
Since I don't have a Snow Leopard disc, I've tried starting up with my old Tiger installation disc, but to no avail... At the risk of sounding a little stupid, should Apple have given me a Leopard disc with my purchase?

you can not use the tiger disk. you need to use your snow leopard disk. what happened to yours? every new computer comes with one. it's called install disk one and is packaged with every new computer.

  • How can i do a factory reset in snow leopard without the disk to start off new without losing my other programs

how can i do a factory reset on snow leopard without the disk to start off new without losing my programs?

You can't. You will need a Snow Leopard disc. You can purchase replacements for your computer from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
A "factory reset" means you erase the drive securely. All of your files will be removed permanently. I suggest you make a backup:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • How can I start System Preferences from the command line?

    Hello All,
I have an issue I'm not quite sure how to solve. I have been tasked within my business environment  with tightening security on a Mac Leopard system and I've been granted Admin Rights to do this on a temporary basis.
    The problem is as follows:
    1) The original Sys Admin that set up this system is gone, no longer available.
    2) He was a Dvorak Keyboard fan and set up the system for a Dvorak Keyboard.
    3) The system actually has a standard Apple keyboard and is marked accordingly, i.e., qwerty (Most Users in the building have stopped using this system altogether - a terrible waste of a good system - even though some of their apps can be run normally (US style qwerty settings). The command line is useless, as is texteditor.app and a few others unless you know Dvorak layout)
    5) When I open System Preferences, the Dvorak keyboard checkbox is grayed out and I cannot change it. There is no lock at the bottom of that particular screen for me to unlock.
    6) Even though I select the US Keyboard at Login, and some apps work accordingly (like MatLab for example) the terminal is borderline useless. I spent over 2 hrs yesterday doing what should have been able to be done in about 30 minutes. I estimate a frustrating and mistake prone additional 8 to 10 hours to do what is normally a a 4 hour job at the command-line.
    7) I do not have the time or desire to re-mark all the keys on the keyboard, particularly since it is not my call to do so, nor do I have the time to re-learn Dvorak touch-typing, and finally I do not want to re-load the entire system. I just want to change the darn keyboard to a standard qwerty keyboard that is somewhat useful in a terminal environment with vi, command line, etc. It's either that or I go mildly insane
This is frustrating as all get-out. The new Admin logged in and was able to uncheck his Dvorak settings (he is not a UNIX guy, nor is he comfortable om Macs), and we were hoping this was a system wide setting, but No. We re-booted the system, I logged in, still Dvorak, and the checkbox was still grayed out.
So I figure, short of re-loading the entre system and all the applications necesary, I can either start the Systems Preferences GUI using sudo and hopefully that will change system-wide settings, or I can delete the .AppleSetupDone file and resetup the system (if the keyboard settings are part of the setup) without spending a couple of days reloading everything and re-setting up users, networks, etc.
Needless to say, I am hoping for the easiest and quickest solution to this extremely frustrating and  aggravating problem.
    Thanks.

For my situation the following C# code does the job:
        Process.Start(
           @"c:\Program Files\National Instruments\CVI71\cvi.exe",
           @"c:\temp\experiment.c" );
    The file must already exist.

  • I have a big problem with Lion and PGP. After upgrading from snow leopard to lion I cannot access my PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start but gives a notion that lion cannot work with my PGP version. Solution?

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,

you have to go back to Snow Leopard.

  • Can't start up; stuck at gray screen- started w/ Skype

hi all.  my mom's Macbook Pro can't start up.  it gets stuck at the grey screen w/ the Apple logo and spinning pinwheel every time.  nothing else is plugged into the laptop aside from the power cord.
here's what i tried already, but to no avail:
      - Reset SMC
      - Reset PRAM
      - Hold shift while starting up... nothing happens.  So can't start in safe mode
      - Used install disk to run Disk Utility diagnostic: Ran into a bunch of Disk Permission errors and fixed those.  Nothing wrong on the Disk itself.
      - Held Command-S while starting up and typed "fsck -fy".  Got "File system was modified" at first.  Ran it again and got clean bill of health there
      - Held "d" while booting, ran the hardware test and it checked out fine.
after all of the above, tried waiting for it to restart for 15 minutes and still same spinning wheel.
this all started when a Skype update couldn't install, so i got rid of the current Skype.  then tried downloading the new Skype. after it supposedly downloaded fully and it was automatically processing in the download pop up window (e.g. something about "writing", "image", etc.), it got stuck and froze the computer for at least 5 minutes.  at that point, i help the power button until it turned out.  then this started...
    please help!  thanks!
PS: not sure if this has anything to do w/ the problem, but after this happened, i tried to use Disk Utilities to make an image onto an external hard drive and it gave me an "operation timed out" error.

See this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 . You've done some of the steps already.
It appears your mother is running Norton Antivirus? or other Symantec programs. If the Antivirus, recommend removing it, and if she wants an antivirus, install ClamXav from http://www.clamxav.com.

  • Page numbering- How can I start with a specific Page #?

I'm using Pages 09 (snow leopard, and Pages on my iPad IOS 4.3.5) and I'm trying to get pages to start numbering using specific numbers.  For example lets say I'm editing chapter 3 of a book which starts on page 84.  Chapter 3 is its own document and always starts numbering with page 1.  I know I could make one large document by pasting all the chapters into a single doc, but I hate working on such large documents.  Editing single chapters at a time is easier to navigate.
Is there anyway to get the page numbering to do this?  I've tried all the options in the page set up and nothing seems to work.  Pages always start with 1 at the begining of a document.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cheers!
    David

In Pages on your Mac you used the inspectors for most functions. You can change starting page numbers in the section tab of the layout inspector.

how can i start to use i chat if it said my password is incorrect and i change it, but still appears that the password is wrong

    Hi,
    AIM
If this is a Name valid with the AIM servers the password has to be 16 characters or Less.
The Apple IDs from MobileMe and @Mac.com allow you to create (And prompt your for ) Longer passwords.
These Names are Valid with the AIM servers but they cannot process the password.
Use iforgot to Change the password to something shorter.
    Googletalk
If you are using a Google ID then you have to enter your Google ID as it appears when you log in to the Google Web Mail Page.
The Mail App seems to allow the Endings (@gmail.com and @googlemail.com) to be used almost interchangeably where as the Jabber Server Google run for Google Talk is stricter (so iChat needs to be precise).
Also the chat option needs to appear in the Web Mail page.
If it does not it needs Enabling on you Google Account settings page.

  • Finder view favorites there is "today", "Yesterday" etc no more available (like in snow leopard), how I can change it back?

In snow leopard there was in the start view of finder (I think it was in favorites) a buttom like "today", "yesterday" etc. when you use the buttom, finder has showed all your files which you have opened the whole day (today buttom). So it was easy when you have to send an mail or must work again on a file to find it without go completely step by step through the finder.
I tried to setting "all my files" to show me the last files but this view does not show all files (only older than 2 ours) - so it is not "up to date".
What can I do to get a solution of my problem?
    Thanks.

They were only Smart Folders so you can easily create a new Smart Folder in Finder.
    Something like this?
Play around with the options to see exactly what you want to see.

how do i get an image in there....ugh...leopard server 10.5.8...
trying to use deploystudio for imaging imacs in labs....
can't start netboot with out image in as a default

Using Server Admin, configure the NetBoot Service (set up the ports and volumes you wish to share images from), and hit Save. This will lay down the appropriate directory structure (<volname>/Library/NetBoot/NetBootSP0).
Put your images in there and you're good to go.
