OS/X Lion 10.7.2 kernel panic - freezes & crashes continue
Just using Safari (with a remote session in the background), I had a full kernel panic & crash - the one where it tells you that you have to reset the power. I've a 24" iMac ( early 2009 ) NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB Lion 10.7.2. So it's not just your new system, it's a general Lion problem - it started with 10.7.0, lasted through 10.7.1 and is still with me.
Yesterday I did a safe boot in the hope that resetting everything that way would help (I had about three freezes and crashes yesterday), but no joy.
These are the events in the minute or so before the crash:

Thank you - that all makes sense. It is, indeed, exactly what I did when I upgraded.
I'm also writing this on the machine that crashed a few minutes ago (I posted the crash in another thread). I got back with a 'safe boot' - as I have done a few times before.
I've also de-installed little snitch (and then done a safe-boot & then re-boot ) since that seemed involved. I de-installed Adobe flash, since that seemed to be a problem - I then re-installed the later, apparently fixed, flash. The most recent crashes don't seeme to have a problem with flash any more.
I've posted the various ( generally different ) crashes. I also posted a summary of the similar lines that turn up in most of the crashes.
Unfortuantely, I'm actually trying to use the machine to meet some urgent deadlines and all this is not making it at all easy.
I had had great hopes for 10.7.2 - I thought that the crashes must be pretty common, so would have a common aetiology. There do seem to have been some fundamental changes to the file sytem and to the video interface (that seems to cause problems to brand new iMacs as well as to my 2009 iMac).

Re: I recently re-installed Lion due to a kernel panic prob. A day after reinstallation, twice in a row it happened, but it stopped.
I want to know if this happened just because it was recently installed, or is the kernel panic still bugging my computer? The kernel panics were 3rd party extensions. If the extension is still connected to me, how do I remove it? Again, It only happened twice since reinstallation. The panic did not have a thing to do with reinstalling Lion or not. There is some other cause. Post your recent panic log.

My early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 24 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM) is still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing.
Some days I can go the whole day without one, other days I will experience many, some while using the computer, some after waking it up, some after restarting from one.... its a mess.
I thought it might be RAM related. So I ran different tests on all the chips, found nothing, no errors reported after overnight looping tests. I added more RAM (I ordered 4 2Gb chips so I'd have a total of 16Gb, they sent me 4Gb cards, so now I have 24Gb. I have heard its best to have all cards of the same size, so I ran it with just the new 4Gb cards giving it 16Gb, it still crashed.) I tested the new ram alone, in 2 card groups, in different configurations on the RAM boards, nada.
Maybe it's the graphics card? But I get no weird graphics artifacts (which I did used to experience with my old iMac before it died).
The fans seem to run normally, not too fast or too loud. Sometimes after repeated crashes I'll open up the computer and blow it out with compressed air. That does seem to help, but not always. It's not real dusty, though there is a fine layer of dust that seems to be stuck/ coat the boards.
In Activity Monitor, the kernel_task hovers at about 1.22 Gb of RAM.
I can not iron down what the problem stems from. Nothing seems to alleviate the crashing, which has become more and more frequent it seems...
Anyone have any suggestions? I have tried using Hardware Test using the original OS disks. I have tried Memtest in Terminal. All to no avail. Nothing turned up any errors. I am not sure what to do next besides call for an Exorcism.
Please help! They keep happening. In the time it took to select the latest one, copy and paste it here, and then write this, a dozen more were logged... Is that normal??

Mac Pro Freeze constantly - no kernel panic, no crash reports. Any ideas?
Dear all,
My good ol' Mac Pro (4.1-2009) which has been utterly reliable for years is now driving me cazy.
It freezes from time to time (let's say twice a day but sometimes not at all for 2 days in a row) - only possible option is hard reboot.
The screen just freezes, no kernel panic, no crash reports.
It has started after a ram replacement but then reverting to the original settings didn't change anything.
Tried all what possible: reverting to original ram (the Apple one), clean install on a new hard drive (10.8.4), replacing graphic card (4870 to 5770), Zap PRAM, resetting SMC, safe mode, clean new account, booting only with keyboard and mouse, Techtool Pro hardware tests-all passed (but not AHT as I can't find the original DVDs anymore), smc fan control, voodoo.
Some apps seem more enthusiastic at crashing than others especially Cinema 4D (when rendering), World of Warcraft (when playing), Photoshop CC (in OGL mode) but sometimes just dropping down a menu causes a freeze.
My eyes are full of tears.
Any idea? Someone had a similar experience?
I might start drinking.
Thanks.
Mac pro 4.1 - 2009 - 2x2.26 quad xeon.
OS X 10.8.4 on a brand new hard drive.
Ram 24 Gb (4/4/4/- 4/4/4/-)
ATI 5770Got a freeze but this time I also got a report! For some reason it makes me happy.
as I said, starting with just the keyboard and the mouse is enough to make this ****' machine freeze.

Random Kernel Panic/Freeze
I have a 1GHz PowerBook G4 17" that would randomly freeze when I installed OS X 10.5 on it about 4 months ago. Looking in Console.app after a crash (which I would have to hold the power button for 7+ seconds to cycle power t o recover), the crash message would point to my AirPort Extreme card. So I figured something was wonky with the driver, and I gave up on 10.5; reverted to 10.4.
Just today I ran across a 1.06 GHz 12" iBook G4 that runs 10.5 just fine. Looking in System Profiler.app shows my AirPort Card's Firmware as: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18), and theirs: broadcom bcm 43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8). I also discovered through the ioreg program that my card has a IONameMatch of "pci106b,4e", and theirs is "pci14e4,4320".
Can anyone confirm if the AirPort Extreme card is the source of these freezes, and if there is any thing I can do (short of removing the card) to work around the issue (i.e., firmware updates, config settings, rom values, etc)?Unfortunately you gave up too soon. The thing to have done was to troubleshoot the system to determine the source of the kernel panic/freeze.
You could have removed the airport card temporarily to see if it really was the problem.
My guess would be bad or marginal RAM.
Leopard is extremely "fussy" about RAM and if you have any 3rd party RAM installed, I would guess that that was the issue. RAM that works with Tiger may not work with Leopard, which is far more demanding on RAM.
Only you can answer the question by reinstalling Leopard (cloning Tiger on a bootable external drive so you can use both systems) and making the proper diagnoses.
Regarding your airport card, are you sure the firmware is up-to-date? Did you miss an update? -
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard
I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:
Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.
Some solutions/attempts to solve:
Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.
My diagnosis so far:
OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.
My request for help and information:
If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.
I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.Crashed again, this time while running screen saver. Here's the log:

Kernel panic's, crashes and Lion, Lion, Lion
At first I thougth it was me.. or I should say my system and than I found a lot of people with Kernel panic's and this page.
http://rixstep.com/1/20110807,00.shtml
When I first saw the new login window in Lion.. for some reason I felt back in windose...
Anyone knows what happened to apple with Lion ?
And yes, I know a lot of people have had nothing but good experiences. .. so far with Lion. but the amount of people complaing about kernel panics is not usual for OS X.... so, what's up .. ?Thanks for the reply. and no I am not a computer and specially Mac expert.. but I have been playing with them for a while. enough to know as little as having done what you have sugested before I dare to post what I have posted.. clean install has been done 3 times. erased partition, cleared PRAM, etc, etc, etc..
Like I said.. I am no expert.. but one thing I do is my reading, yes I searched the forums of a few websites, yes I posted the logs of at least 3 different kernel panics, yes I google parts of the logs. the one thing I don't know and don't have the time to do, is learn how to read the logs..
System has been working to perfection since 2007, have done all upgrades, current install only has Quicken essentials (I know it *****) and 1Password. nothing else. and it already did it twice in the past 24 hours. and no, is not my hardware. and yes one of the times was before Quicken and 1Password.
Just in case. previous upgrades have been done while running at least:

OSX Lion 10.7.3 kernel panic & Recovery HD
Hello,
Recently I have updated to 10.7.3. My system became unstable and kernel panic appears often. I wanted owngrade to 10.7.2 but no chance to. So I bought an external HD and used as time machine for backup. After that I started as Recovery HD and reinstalled OSX (Still 10.7.3), At least today I did not get any kernel panic but Time machine is saving new 14Gb that I did not downloaded. Somehow, I guess it is what Recovery HD did.
I wont those extra 14Gb since I don't know where they are and what are they for.
I beg information about what happened
Thanks in advance.
Javi.I hope this help you then:
I get more kernel panics when USB are connected at turn on the computer. Actually, I live without EyeTV and kernel panic comes every 4-10hours instead 1-3h when eyeTV plugged. No idea what the logs are saying because nothing is understable for me.
Bluetooth, Wifi, ethernet are enabled, few thirdyparty apps too.
I believe USB is doing something to this issue.
Besides that, after using recovery HD and download those unknow 14Gb I left the machine in idle for every night with EyeTV and time machine drive plugged on and no kernel panic yet -
Have 2006 24 inch imac running 10.75 Lion os having repeat kernel panic attacks 2006 imac
I have a 2006 imac (24 Inch) using Lin 10.75 OS. It keeps having kernel panic attacks and needs to shut down. It is also very unstable and freezes maore and more often. Any suggestions?
Nada. And yes it displays the correct resolution of 1920 x 1200. And yeah pretty much what I'd call cosmetic too but it just bothers me after a while. Yep I'm one of those people lol my computer runs perfectly fine but I still find something wrong but it's just wrong. System Profiler is not supposed to be incorrect. But just seeing if I'm the only one with this problem or if just the 7600 GT iMacs have this error.

Envy 110 D411a causes kernel panic that crashes MacBook Pro
I posted this 10 months ago, with no response.
My Model D411a Envy 110 (PN: CQ809A SN: CN264C228R05QR) is on an AT&T gateway/router. We have a 13" MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.5, a 13" MacBook Air running 10.8.5 and an iPad also on the same network.
Often, when I try to print a page from the internet from the MB Pro to the Envy 110, it causes a kernel panic on the Mac that crashes it, requiring a lengthy re-boot. The display shows a big black box with the message that I have to re-start the Mac, starting with a complete re-boot - printed in several languages. This does not always happen, but often enough to be a major problem. It has not happened with the MB Air or iPad.
I have an identical printer in Florida that has not had this problem, as far as I can recall. The gateway/router there is from Century Link.
An Apple "Genius Bar" guy suggested this is caused by HP using kernel extensions in its software, which no other printer manufacturers use. I now own six HP printers. I have had some problems keeping three of them going with the AT&T set-up and the same computers, plus a pre-Intel Mac Mini. The oldest of the printers is an HP LaserJet 4ML, which is so old it has a long white beard — but still runs. I hate just to abandon HP Printers, and the Envy is the best physical fit both here and in our Florida RV, but having it crash my laptop (most used) as much as half the time I try to print from the net makes it a problem rather than a solution.
I can't even find a reference to "kernel" much less "kernel panic" in any of the forums here, which adds to the feeling that no one knows what I'm even talking about.
If anyone out there has any advice to offer, I'd really appreciate it before I have to toss the printer and find one from another manufacturer.
Thanks in advance,
DanteHi Dante,
From the post i understand that you are having issue with the MacBook Pro(Lion) with Envy 110.
Can you help me understand what all other printers have been installed on the same MacBook
We can try to uninstall the printer using scrubber/Reset the printing system and reinstall the printer with the software available on Web. (ENVY-110-series_v12.14.0.dmg).
Note: Performing this step will delete all the printer from the MacBook, and should be reinstalled.
Use Scrubber Uninstallation:
Go to Applications>Hewlett-Packard , Press and Hold the "CTRL", "ALT","CMD" simultaneously click on Uninstall.
Reset Printing System:
1.Open Print and Scan from System Preferences
2.CTRL Click or Right Click on the Printer box on the Left side and Choose " Reset Printing System"
3. Click OK
Do Repair Disk Permission
1. Open Applicaion Folder>>Utilities>>Disk Utility.
2. Sele t the hard drive containing the boot volume.
3. Go to First Aid Tab and select Reprir Disk Permission.
Download and run the driver from web and add the printer to queue.
See if it helps.
Thanks
Mineesh

17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!
Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot!
-KimThanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
Thanks again! -
Hi,
my MBP crashed 3 times this week. First I didn't read the problem details. The other/last two which happened last night an this morning mentioned Kernel panic. (Copied all the details down in case that's of any help?)
I read the following in an old thread:
+Kernel panics are caused by two things: faulty hardware (usually memory) and buggy kernel code (usually third-party kernel extensions.) The relevant part of the panic log is the backtrace, which in your case shows that the panic occured in the graphics drivers. The VMWare extensions are the only third-party kernel code you're running.+
+There are two things you can do. First, run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the Mac. If that's positive, you have a hardware issue. If it's negative, uninstall VMWare and see whether you can reproduce the crash.+
Unfortunately I am abroad for the coming months (in Egypt, where there's no apple store!), and do not have my CDs or any other extra things with me to run that Apple Hardware Test...
I am a computer illiterate, so do not quite understand what has gone wrong. Have not really downloaded anything big, but very often use a lot of basic programmes at once and have my computer on for long periods at a time. (I know, not perfect conditions). My computer has also been running pretty slow every now and then and froze a few times, but that improved. More concerned about the panic crashes.
If you have any other suggestions, that would be amazing! Thank you! Many KP's are caused by RAM problems including incorrect RAM, defective RAM or RAM that is unseated. You can easily trouble shoot these issues by being a little methodical. If your KP problem doesn't appear to be RAM related then I'd suggest studying these article to help you locate where the problem is.

MacBook Pro (Boot Camp) kernel panics, application crashes
I'm currently using a mid-2012 15-inch MacBook Pro with Windows 7 Home Premium installed via Boot Camp. Most of my daily activities before last week were playing games on Steam (for both Mac and Windows), editing videos in iMovie (Mac), and browsing the internet on Google Chrome (both). However, starting last Thursday, September 20th, at random intervals, my programs kept crashing without any sort of heads-up or computer slowdown leading into them. This was occurring on Mac with Safari, Steam and iMovie, and on Windows with the newly installed Borderlands 2, Steam, and Skype. Not to mention, Google Chrome's Shockwave was crashing every 15 minutes or less, and the "Oh Snap!" error page popped up without me doing anything on the pages that crashed (both on Mac and Windows).
To add to the problem, I was given my first blue screen after a string of application crashes last Thursday, and soon after upon switching to Mac, I received a kernel panic. From what my friends and I have researched, this has happened due to memory corruption, seeing as how the blue screen errors all had codes relating to that, like 0x0000003B and 0xc0000005. However, no matter what I've tried to fix this, be it cleaning the Windows Registry, using MemTest to see if the RAM caused this, running Disk Utility on Mac, running the Apple Hardware Test, or uninstalling/removing potential malware, nothing has seemed to work. Borderlands 2 keeps crashing at random intervals, Safari still quits while a YouTube video is still playing, and most annoyingly, I get kernel panics and blue screens while I'm talking to my friends on Skype.
Another interesting problem is that I can't install a Mac OS X 10.7.5 update; it tells me the downloaded file was corrupted every time I try download it and it can't install as a result. I'm stuck on Mac OS X 10.7.4. Yet I'm able to install Windows updates without any problem whatsoever. Why is this?
My question is, is it best to take this in for repair, or is there something else I can do to fix this that I haven't tried yet? I don't consider myself to be any good with the computers I use, so I have no idea if I should have seen/identified the error already.hi,

Kernel Panic, Same and Continuous
Greetings. After the recent 10.5.3 I too have been hit with a kernel panic. I'm able to boot in safe mode, and my second drive, which I have not updated, operates normally. Using Techtool and Disk Utility, along with other recommended checks, I'm fairly certain it isn't hardware related, but not 100% sure, none of the tests picked up RAM or Memory problems, but again, I might not be looking at them correctly. I'm trying to translate the error report but can't really put it together, any help for a solution is appriciated.

Message was edited by: Andrew876Thanks for the welcome, and I do have an update.
Following some other advice I downloaded the combo updater from the apple site and reinstalled 10.3.5 and the kernel panic dissappeared, but I'm worried now it might pop up again, so I want to make sure I'm not holding onto items that would cause an error.
In Safe Mode, your correct, I get no kernel panics, and I agree it was something odd in the 3rd party. It may still be there waiting to pop up again, so to answer your questions.
