OS X Lion 10.7.3 & AD binding

Hello,
when trying to bind with AD i get the following:
authentication server failed to complete the requested operation.
Tried a couple of things found in many different posts:
1. for my login tried [email protected] suggested here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3498529?start=0&tstart=0
2. tried removing local KDC suggested in same thread, i dont think i had anything at those locations
3. tried suggestions here: http://noeasysearch.blogspot.com/2012/02/binding-to-active-directory-domain-with .html
4. tried entering prefered domain server (worked in initial releases of os x lion)
5. tried domain server name for active directory domain (worked in initial releases of os x lion)
if anyone has other suggestions be glad to try,
thank you.

It gets worse I hear, that Mountain Lion is coming soon. Since Lion, my whole experience has been more of sending crash reports than anything else. I wish Apple would have given me a helmet to go with my MBP.
I have reinstalled with SL a bunch of times, but all my periphials no longer support Snow Leopard, so I reluctantly upgrade again to Lion, and blamo, its a bunch of Black Screen of Death issues again.
Trying to dual boot or use another OS in the meanwhile is a battle, since ejecting an ISO from most other OS's is near impossible, or the ones that do eject, have issues with NVIDIA or something else proprietary too.
I think all in all I have to lick my wounds, and go back to Snow Leopard to get things done, and plan on buying another machine to run FreeBSD on to continue getting things done in real time. iPads are cool. But it appears the usefulness of a MacBook Pro have came and went with Lion. And from what I see of Mountain Lion, a new MBP is nothing but a very expensive iPad. Its sad, I have to resort to using my ladies old Vista machine a lot to get much done. I used to sneer at those machines. But now the tables have turned.
I try to use Virtual Box with FreeBSD, but I can not get far with all the underlying OS X crashing all the time. I have found a neat little Linux that runs "Live" called Porteus. No matter how 'dead' your MBP is, with Porteus you can still get a lot done if need be.
So its Snow Leopard, and $10,000 worth of equipment on the side that will not run on it. Or Lion, and send Crash Reports? What to do?

  • How to add specific ports to OS X Lion firewall

I need to add specific ports/port ranges to the OS X Lion clients' firewalls, any ideas?
OS X Lion firewall settings only allow adding applications.  There is no "LDAP" application, it's built into the Network preferences settings.  The LDAP server is an OS X Lion Server running Open Directory.

    iosw wrote:
I guess the flexibility in the regular Lion clients with ports is not possible.  It's only possible with OS X Lion Server, fair enough.
No, you can configure both the client and server as much as you want. The only issue is that most people just don't understand what a firewall does (they think it is the same as anti-virus) so neither Apple nor I will bother explaining all the nitty-gritty details right off the bat.
The client version of Lion doesn't need to be providing any services at all. Hence, there is really no need to run the firewall. If you are doing something fancy that the application firewall doesn't quite support, then you might want to run the real ipfw firewall instead. It is also installed on the client, but isn't a tool for the great unwashed.
Personally, I find the fancy stuff pretty interesting, but I don't think you are doing that.
We're trying to configure SSL within the Lion clients and didn't know if there was an incoming requirement.  There's a bug (logged even by Apple) when Lion client's attempt to bind to an SSL enabled Open Directory server.  So the firewall preferences wasn't the reason for this failure.  We're resorting to non-SSL binding until Apple fixes the problem, although we running on a private network and can get away with non-SSL for the time being.
You might want to ask about this in the Server forums. This could be a situation where Apple isn't going to bother explaining the details on how to fix it because it would just confuse most people and they may already have it fixed in-house. It has already been discussed and some people say they have fixes. See the details in this thread.

  • Is that Lion OS is Free for early months purchaser.

    Hi Apple Expert,
I had bought a new MacBook Pro last month, As the Apple staff was telling me that I would be able to get a free Lion OS which will be release on this month. He again telling me that Apple will send an email to me with redeem code for the Free Lion OS, So that's no need to wait until next months for the new OS to release.
But until now i still haven't receive any email from Apple regarding Free Lion OS to the user who purchase in the early month before the new OS release.
So my concern here's is that a truth that Apple will send redeem code for Free Lion OS to the early month purchase before new OS release. or just the Apple staffs created it own stories.
    Thanks,
    Best Regards,
    Kok Tung Terry Chu

Backup your user files and folders manually (drag and drop) from all partitions/OS's installed to a external powered drive and disconnect this drive, before proceeding in addition to TimeMachine, Bootable Clones etc.
You need to make sure you're running the latest version of Snow Leopard10.6.8
Click the "Apple" symbol in the top left corner of your screen and select "About This Mac."
Make sure you're running version 10.6.8.
If not, click "Software Update" from the same Apple menu and update your system.
Then when that's finished launch the MacAppStore from the same menu.
You'll see the giant Lion banner across the top. Click on it.
This brings you to the app page for Lion. It costs $29.99 -- click the price, then click "Buy App."

    Didn't get Lion?
These are user to user support forums and Apple doesn't respond here,
We users can't speak for Apple about your free Lion status or problems downloading, reissuing a download.
It's possible Apple could be spacing out the downloads as not to knock theservers offline. So be patient.
If after a week or so when the initial rush is over, and you still haven't gotten your Lion, I suggest you contact Apple.
    Mission critical
If your using Mac's in a mission critical type environment or have third party hardware or software you must rely upon working correctly. It's advised to wait until all the bugs, driver updates, third party software and other issues are resolved before upgrading. This might take several months. Then if you do so, do one machine at a time andcarefully test everything before full deployment.

  • Lion Clients 10.7.4 show network accounts are unavailable and server is not responding when binding to Snow Leopard server 10.6.8

    Hello,
I am running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 and my clients are Lion 10.7.4.  While testing I had no issues binding 10.7.4 to our 10.6.8 server's OD.  I created a 10.7.4 image to push to all of our machines and in the beginning of last week I was able to push the image and get the machines to bind with OD and apply preferences on these machines through workgroup manager.  Towards the end of the week though this stopped working.  Now any time I bind a 10.7.4 client to OD it allows me to perform an authenticated bind and the machine shows up in workgroup manager but immediatley after binding the client the status jelly next to the OD server in the directory list is red and says "This server is not responding".  If I reboot the client I get a notification that "Network accounts are unavailable" at the login screen.  My preferences from workgroup manager are also not applying, which is my main concern because without workgroup manager my mac server is somewhat pointless as we use it for very little else.
I've since tried to bind a snow leopard machine (10.6.8) and this still is working with a green status jelly.  I've also built a lion machine from scratch, updated to the 10.7.4 combined update and am still getting the same issue where it shows the server is not responding when binding to OD.  I then applied the subsiquent OS update after the 10.7.4 combined update but the problem still persists.
Is anyone else having this issue?  Any help would help me keep my sanity.
    Thanks,
    Dane

Have you had any luck finding a solution to this?  The only thing I have found was to unbind and then bind without authentication.  Any help with progress on your end would be appreciated!
    Nick.

  • Lion client OD bind to Lion server - Authentication Failed

Authenticated bind enabed via terminal command. Client and server are up to date. I've been able to bind Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion clients over the last few weeks before this MacBook Air but for some reason it keeps failing with an authentication error. I can log into WGM on the server using my Diradmin account without issue. This is the same account I'm attempting to bind with. I have a non-admin account that can bind clients and it too is failing on the client side. I've been Googling for hours and haven't identified a source or solution. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm just shy of demoting my OD master, promoting it, and re-importing my OD config. I don't want to though.

    Hello michaelhoch,
    could you find any solution?
I have the same setup: OS X Leopard Server 10.5.8, and Snow Leopard Clients. Everything worked fine. But now I get the first OS X Lion Client, and I can not use Mail, iChat, iCal and so on. I found the same errormessage in Console, and I think I also have a problem with the user directories on the server.

  • Can bind SL clients but not Lion

I'm running an an OD master Lion server... and I can bind snow leopard clients to it without issue.  Both locally and remotetly, with and without SSL certificates.
But when I try to add a Lion system I'm getting "connection failed to the directory server 2100"  So I disabled SSL certificate and can connect locally, but still cannot connect from outside the LAN.
Everything is up to date 100% as of today.
    Thanks

    Hi Pondini,
I was able to use diskwarrior to rebuild the directory luckily.
Ah, great!  DW is expensive, but sometimes well worth it!
Thank you very much for the help though, could you possibly point me in the direction if I should be needing a new hard drive?
Depends where you are and whether you have AppleCare.  If you did buy AppleCare, that extends your hardware warranty to 3 years, so you'd have to take it to Apple.
If you're in the area of an AppleStore, make an appointment here:   http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If not, see if there's an Apple Authorized Service Provider nearby:  https://locate.apple.com/country
If you don't have AppleCare, you might be able to find a local 3rd-party shop, but it may be hard to find out if they're any good with Macs.  An Apple Store or AASP might cost more, but unless you know for sure, might be more reliable.
This has happened a few times in the past.
That could be a hardware problem, but could also be things like abnormal shutdowns or system crashes.
It's not the best, most exhaustive test in the world, but you might try this: OS X Mountain Lion: Use Apple Hardware Test  Run the Extended tests (that may take an hour or more, depending on how much RAM you have).  Write down any error code(s) it shows.
