OS X Lion help

I have no way of backing up my computer (only have a 3.98GB flash drive) and it needs to have Lion reinstalled to clean the disk up a bit. Any ideas on what to do??

Buy a cheap hard drive and put it in an external case and clone your MacBook hard drive over to it then erase your internal hard drive and reinstall Lion.
For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
Or OWC  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/HDE-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=pd_bxgy_pc _text_b
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

I'm on a Macbook Pro and all of my software is up-to-date.
The photos and events, etc. appear to be present in my photo library, but I cannot see the actual images--only an outlined placeholder.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. This can take 3 or 4 goes to work.

  • Would a clean install of Lion Help

Sorry if this has been covered before.  This is my situation:  Snow Leopard was stable and a really great experience from moving away from windows, but in Oct I upgraded to Lion. Since then all I've had is problem after problem. Safari is a nightmares, hanging a lot, my printer only work if I plug it in via USB, the spinny ball is a daily friend, and my mac hangs far too often.  Though my swearing has improved greatly.  I would go as far as to say Windows XP is far less stressful then Lion.  I would really like this to end as my opinion of Apple is not good.  I know I'm not along on this issue so would a clean install of Lion help or would an clean install of Snow Leapard be better? Rant over...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HT201364 Hi, I have all the specs for installing Mavericks but it wont do it. Would upgrading first to Mountain Lion help?

Hi, I have all the specs for installing Mavericks but it wont do it. Would upgrading first to Mountain Lion help?

    Are you sure?
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    A. Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?

  • QuickTime Plug-In Failure in Safari under Lion - HELP!

I'm building my website in iWeb, using MP4s (H.264) files. When I publish and visit the live site, Safari will not read the movies and instead gives me a "plug-in failure" error. Meanwhile, the files play no problem in every other browers. This is a Lion bug. I tried emptying the cache, re-setting Safari, running in 32-bit mode, and choosing QT7 to open all QT files. Nothing helps. Please advise. Thanks!

FYI, I've checked ALL the other posts with similar issues including the solution to remove the Quicktime Plugin.plugin, and still nothing works. I did notice that I had this older plugin. I added the extention webplugin which changed the icon to a Lion icon, but that didn't help either. Could it be that Lion failed to install the latest plugin? If so, how can I get this file? I really don't want to archive and install over one lousy plugin. Thanks.

  • Issues with MacBook Pro 13-Inch i7 2011 with Lion help is mostly welcome

Hello I had some Issues with my MacBook Pro 13-Inch i7 - 2011.. Whenever i enter/exit safari i get the rainbow circle and my MacBook keeps freezing every now and then it's really annoying i get the rainbow circle when i try to shut down the computer aswell and sometimes the computer gets stuck with a white screen whenever i try to shut down the system.. I have 8gb ram and SSD i'd want some help on how to fix these issues please
Edit: The computer freezes when i play games aswell for around 8 seconds when it's newly started so i doubt it's anything to do with the heath it's something wrong with Lion since i never had it when i had Snow Leopard on this computer please help me with what i can do without reinstalling my iOS since i can't do that now i'm at vacation with a slow network which is around 0.85Mbit/s... I'm new to Mac so i have no clue how to repair the iOS same as Windows computers when you just insert the CD and press repair

Well, if you are on the road you could try to do this:
    1. boot with the Alt key pressed
    2. select the recovery drive
    3. reinstall Lion
Hope you left a backup at home!
    Good luck...

  • Windows to Lion help transitioning...

    Hi all,
I've jumped ships purely based on the iMAC hardware design (which I think is beutiful).  Anyway, I was happy with win7 and have used windows for years.  I am finding I like Mac O/S especially since I can get into the bowls of the o/s via the shell (I am an SA as part of my job so familiar with Unix generally which helps in Lion which was a nice surprise).
A few things I would like to change if possible.  Though I am happy to learn new shortcuts I have years of naturally moving my hands in a certain way.  This is compounded by the fact I am using a gaming keyboard (Apple default is not suitable) so its not a native keyboard.  The Window key has become the Apple/Command key but there is only 1 key on the right.  This makes cut/paste and screenshoting unnatural.
    So is there anyway to:
Remap (or add a combo) for cntrl-v and cntrl-p?
Can I remap the prntscreen key to actually print-screen?
There are a few others but if I can figure out how to remap these the others will be easy.
Thanks in advance.  If need be I will get a new gaming keyboard with a window key on the left which would make it easier to learn the Apple short-cuts but I do like this keyboard and would rather not.

I`m sure you have thought of this but when it comes to screenshots on any system I feel like Gyazo is the best. Check it out here: http://gyazo.com

  • Mac Lion help

I downloaded OS X Lion 10.7 on my mac and I've been having problems with my mac. I looked online and saw that the 10.7 I installed was the wrong build (11a390). I need help in figuring out how to uninstall it and I don't have a Snow Leopard disk because I gave it to a friend. My itunes won't open and my google chrome isn't working. Some websites on safari won't open also. I just need help in figuring out how I can uninstall and reinstall Snow Leopard without disk.

You can't...Snow Leopard needs to have a disk to do the install...If you can get your disks back from your friend, that would be a good place to start.  However, if you can't get it back, you can always call Apple and order one from them for $19.99 and have them ship you one and then you'll be able to restore Snow Leopard.

  • Vlc does not work with mountain lion - help

running a 2009 macbook pro and upgraded to mountain lion.  now VLC player will not load without X11 upgrade?!? don't know what this is or what it will do to my mac.  My friend's 2011 Macbook Pro upgraded to mountain lion without a hitch but i'm running into problems all the time.
    Help!  Advice needed!

You do not need XQuartz to run the 64-bit Intel version of VLC 2.03 on Mountain Lion. Running it here right now and no XQuartz installed. I have never needed X11 to run VLC on OS X since 10.6.
However, you may need a 32/64-bit binary of VLC for that 2009 vintage cpu.
Remove your present copy of VLC and then fetch another copy here.
    Did this help?

  • Disk is locked - mountain lion help!!

Hello, I tried to download Mountain Lion yesterday and it said my disk needed repair. But it doesn't give me the option to repair it. I verified the disk permissions, etc. When I try to download it again, it says my hard drive is locked. I hope it didn't crash!!! Help!!

VK said for locked HDs and volumes at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2329689
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"name of locked HD"
sudo chmod a+rx /Volumes/"name of locked HD"
Assumes you can boot into recovery mode and select the Terminal app from the Utilities menu. If so, copy and paste the first one into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. When the Password: prompt pops up, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows on the screen, and hit the return key. Copy & paste the other one, hit the return key. You won't get the password prompt, since the initial one's good for five minutes. Quit the Terminal app and try restoring the OS.
