OS X Lion - no iChat alerts sounds

Since upgrading to Lion, I have no audable sounds of any kind.  I not referring to video chats, send/Rec/login/logout.
And on the 2 machines I've upgraded, iChat does not save the window sizes.
Thankfully, neither are show stoppers however, it just ain;t right.
Thanks in advance
Banjo

Umm,
I don't seem to be in this Thread until now.
iChat Menu > Preferences > Alerts
If these sounds play here then the issue is System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects and the Volume the Alerts are played there.
During day to day use the Alerts are played by the System Alerts settings.
NOTE on Windows.
iChat 3, 4 and 5 save the size of the Outgoing Video Chat window (and it's Position) whereas the Incoming ones get placed in there default places (i.e same for Audio Chats)
If your Mac is a little low on the Processor size the Window may resize to the default it happens to be using.
Ideally most Intel Macs will use 640 X 480 and then play with the framerate.(starting at 30fps)
Around 15fps iChat will change to 480 X 320 which may increase the Frame rate when used.
Internet Speeds also has a bearing and there are two smaller sizes iChat can use to get the best out of the Connection.
.plists
com.apple.ichat.plist does "hold" the Remembered Window positions in iChat 5 and below
However deleting it does return all other settings to default  (It will not lose the Buddy list)
iChat 6 is affected by the setting in System Preference > Genereal Pane that can be set to Remember open windows on Quit the next time it is launched (It affects all apps if set)
If the mentioned .plist is deleted iChat needs to be restarted.
com.apple.ichatAgent.plist holds the current Accounts that are logged in (or should be on iChat launch)
It also holds the iTunes Playing Status Mesage sort order for the info (Track, Artist, Album) and the Current Status Message (can be Messages if the Buddy list are set to Different statuses)
It also holds where you own Buddy Pic is on your system.
On occasions this has to be deleted the Computer should be restarted as iChatAgent starts up when the computer does.  (There is a partial login for Off Line IMs)

  • Loss of iChat alert sounds

I hae recently lost all iChat alerts. If I receive a reply to an ichat instant message or a buddy logs in etc, iChat no longer makes the noises to indicate an event change.
    Things tried so far:
1/ force quitting "coreaudiod" using activity monitor as suggested in one discussion thread.
    2/ reinstalling 10.4.7 combo update
3/ trashing preference files from my user library prefrences folder
    Any suggestions woud be great!

  • Why am I not getting any alert sounds in Lion?

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.3 and find that I am not getting any alert sounds. Mail sounds work, voice notification [as in giving me the time on the hour and other spoken alerts] works, but simple things like trash emptying, taking items out of the dock or Finder side bar don't work at all.
I gone to System Prefs many times to try and tweak some things. Discovered that I had a lot of old Xounds sounds, so I deleted those. I'm at a real loss here folks, so if someone can point me in the right direction, I shall be forever thankful!

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • No new mail alert sound in Mountain Lion

I did a clean install of ML, In Lion when I had an alert sound when new mail arrived, i cannot get it to work in ML.
It is enables in mail, and also in sound preferences as well, but still no sound when new mail arrives.
    Anyone else?

After trying many methods. I found this a temporary fix. The solution is to set a rule in Mail Preference to run an Applscripts if there is new email. This Applescript will play a notification sound of your choice:
tell application "Mail" to if (count of (every message of inbox whose read status is false)) isgreater than 0 then do shell script "afplay '/Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Resources/New Mail.aiff'"
You can change the path /Application/Mail.app/Contents/Resources/New Mail.aiff to any folder that containt an aiff file. For example: /System/Library/Sounds/Glass.aiff (in this folder you can find all the alert sounds of Mac OS)
    Applescript Editor
    1. Open Applescript Editor in Applications folder
    2. Paste the script in after choosing your notification sound path
    3. Save in ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.mail (can name it New Mail in my example)
    4. Now you can choose the script in Mail Rules setting
    For the Mail rules setting
Open Mail Preferences then Rules then Add Rule. The setting like photo

It works like a charm !!!

  • How do I get rid of or change that twitter alert sound in Mountain Lion?

I would love to change the twitter alert sound in 10.8 to something more pleasant, but I don't see anywhere to change it. Maybe I could replace the sound somewhere in the system files?
Might just have to disable alert sounds for it but I do want something to play......

That is the general alert sound, not seeing anywhere to change the twitter alert sound which isn't listed under the sound preferences.

  • Screen flashes instead of alert sound after 10.4.11 update

After updating to 10.4.11 about 2 weeks ago I noticed that my screen flashes whenever an alert sound should occur. It looks just like the "Flash screen when an alert sound occurs" option found in the Universal Access (Hearing) settings. I toggled the setting found there, but even when it's set to off, my flashing screen alert continues to occur. I know a friend of mine who experienced the exact same problem, but he hasn't found a solution to this (minor, but annoying) problem yet either. I also talked to a "genius" at the local Apple store. He hadn't heard about the problem and couldn't offer a solution either.
Is anybody else experiencing a flashing screen alert? How does one get rid of it? Thanks.

    this solved it for me:
i checked my system alerts and found that the alert sound was set to some invalid legacy sound called AIM - probably left over from when i used AIM instead of iChat.
i set the alert sound back to one of the original Apple sounds and viola! No More Flashing Screen!!!

  • Alert sounds no longer work in 10.9.1

I'm not sure when it started happening, but I can no longer hear alerts or system sounds through the speakers of my MBP.
Other audio, like music, videos, sounds on web pages etc. all work fine.
However, if I do something that would invoke an alert beep, the screen flashes like it's on mute.  I have gone to sound control panel, tried several alert sounds, adjusted the volume, tried different sound output devices, etc.
I've never come across this.  Any ideas?

I have this same question.  The same thing is happening to me on Mountain Lion (10.8.5) on my MacBook.  I get all of the sounds in Mail, but none of the alert sounds anymore.  I tried shutting my computer down and restarting, but it didn't help.  I can't even get the alert sounds to work on the System Preferences page (like when you click on the sounds to sample them).  This never happened with Snow Leopard!

  • Mail loses it's alert sounds almost every time the system goes to sleep

I don't have a clue what's happening, but the alert sounds are restored when I quit mail and restart it. I've checked and determined that Sound is on when this happens and it doesn't get muted somehow. I leave Mail running all the time. This also happened in Lion but not in Snow Leopard. I've tried changing the Sound settings but if there is any change it doesn't last.

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • How do I change the script for a voice iChat Alerts for when a friend becomes unavailable?

How do I change the script for a voice iChat Alert for when a friend becomes unavailable?
Before I upgraded my system from Mac OS 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6.8 - I a had personalized the script for a voice iChat Alert when my husband logged off from work. I had the ichat voice warn me "OH, Crap! he's coming home now! Hurry clean house!" This personalized voice alert did not survive the upgrade. Now, I need step by step instructions to walk me through the process. Please help! I mis my machine shouting funny profane alerts.

    Hi,
In iChat 3 (OS 10.4.x) there was  Line at the Bottom of iChat > Preferences > Alerts that you could enter text to and it would speak that Text.
(you could set something against Individual Buddies as well).
This Setting is not there in iChat 4 or 5  (I presume iChat 6 as well).
Now it is possible to write AppleScripts that can Speak.
It is alos possible in iChat 4 upwards to link an AppleScript to an Action/Alert
At this point my lack of AppleScript knowledge lets me down on what to tell you to do next.
An Alternative would be to Record a sound with said alert.
Place this sound in your Home Folder/Library/Sounds
Then in the Alert opton for youe husband select the Log off option and link that Sound

  • Why do alert sounds vanish?

This happened under Lion, too, but it seems to occur even faster under Mountain Lion. For no apparent reason, alert sounds for emptying the trash, etc, just stop working. They start again if I reboot, but I shouldn't have to do that. Any suggestions? And thanks!

No. I've sent information to Apple through its feedback link, but I've heard nothing further from forum members or through any other source.

  • Unable to play custom alert sound.

I'm trying to add another custom alert sound.  Had no problem in Snow Leopard, but now with Lion I've created a .wav file in Library/Sounds and it won't play.

All sounds should be in .aiff or .aif format.
You can convert the .wav to aif in iTunes and move that to Library/Sounds.
    Hope this helps!

  • Lose System Alert Sound after Fast User Switching

After switching between accounts a few times I lose all alert sounds from all applications, including the Finder. I can still play music, hear audio from movies, etc., but any alert sound is now silenced. Anyone else know a fix for this?

    I don't have a solution, but I thought I'd mention
I'm having the same problem where the alert sounds
(Finder, Mail, etc.) can no longer be heard so that
the "powers that be" can see that it's a growing
problem and perhaps find a resolution.
I didn't notice this problem until I recently
upgraded to 10.4.4, but I may have simply not noticed
with 10.4.3 since I've always got my iTunes cranked
    up.

I had no problem until 10.4.4 and I do not switch users. But having some knowledge of Unix, I went digging, and I tried a Force Quit on the system process "coreaudiod". Can be found in Activity Monitor - select all processes. iChat started sounding again on its own, and a restart of Mail got it going again. This worked for me (tired of re-booting to fix).
    I hope this helps others

  • How do you uninstall or remove custom alert sounds?

I'm using an iMac and I thought I'd try out some new system alert sounds. I hated them and now I can find them to delete them. The alerts show up in system peferences but they're not in the library/sounds folder. I've done a spotlight search for the sound names and nothing come up. Is there a way to remove/delete/uninstall custom system alerts? Help! I hate them!

I have Lion, but run Snow Leopard and always forget that many are forced into Lion.
When you open Finder, do you see the Macintosh HD in the sidebar under Devices?
If not, go to Finder Preferences and check the box next to Hard disks and External disks.
Then select the Mactintosh HD and navigate to the Library / Sound Folder...

  • Random Alert Sound on 2012 iMac OSX 10.8.5?

Hi, I recently erased and restored my iMac (late 2012, 27") and am currently running OSX 10.8.5.   At incredibly random times (every few minutes), my iMac will make an alert sound that is sort of like a "ker-plunk" noise.  It is somewhat similar to the skype message notification sound, but it's definitely not from skype, and it's not exactly that same sound.
I can't figure out where it's coming from, as I'm not alerted anywhere else on the Mac.   I don't have mail set up on the mac so it's not an alert from that.
I'm at a loss, and this is super annoying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
The System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects tab  can list all the System Sounds and any sounds you have in your User's Sound Folder.
As you can see those in your Users Folder (~/Library/Sounds) are listed as Custom where as the System Sounds are listed and Built-in.
I have a door opening and a door closing sound that I think came from the AIM for Mac  applications that sound a bit ker-plunky. (listed as Buddy On and Buddy Off).
If the Sound is not from these sources then I will describe and example method that you can apply to other apps (most likely the ones that are open)
Go to the Applications folder in the Finder.
    Highlight Messages.
Right Click and select "Show Package Contents"
Open the Contents folder that then appears in the window.
    Open the Resources Folder.
At this point I have the Finder's View Menu > Show View Options showing the Kind column
I click the Kind header and the .aiff files that the app uses are moved to the top of the list.
I have also used the Finder's View Menu to Customise the Toolbar and have the Quick Look button showing
Highlight a sound and use the Quick Look button.
It opens a Slide but also plays the sound without adding and using iTunes to play them
(Alternatively you can right click and Open With and use Quicktime).
