OS X Lion restarts when shutting down?!

Since I upgraded to OS X Lion every now and then (sometimes more than often) after my MacBook shuts down it suddenly restarts bringing me back to the Log In screen.  Has this happened to anyone else or is it just me?
Thanks,
~Chris

Not occuring to me i'm sorry

  • Macbook wakes from sleep, restarts when shut down, tried everything. "wake reason = "

My macbook (2008 unibody, 2.4ghz, os x 10.6.8) will not stay asleep, and it restarts when I shut it down. For example, I'll close the lid, it will sleep, then wake a few seconds later, and eventually go back to sleep. After a few cycles of this, the CPU reaches over 80 celcius, but nothing indicative of heavy cpu usage in the activity monitor except for "kernel task." I guess this is because the fans have to keep shutting off when lid is closed. Of the things I've tried, the following have not worked:
*fiddling with all possible energy saver preferences
*disk utility repairs, even with the snow leopard install disc
    *resetting pram and smc
*loading into windows 7 partition, same thing happens
*loading into my external HD, same thing happens
*deleted everything in the LaunchDaemons folder
    *turned off bluetooth entirely
    *turned off airport
*turned off "Set date and time automatically"
    *nothing plugged into USB
*tried with/without magsafe plug, with/without battery, same problems occur
*no errors returned with applecare's Techtool Deluxe
*ran every maintenance script I could: crons, clear cache, rebuilds, updates
*ran the hardware test from one of the install disks, no problems detected
    *turned off login items
I've studied the messages in Console.app like my life depended on it and the only thing that's bugging me is that I get "kernel---------Wake Reason = ". It doesn't give me a wake reason, it's just empty. I can't find anything around the net that could tell me why this occurs. I put "syslog |grep -i "Wake reason ="" into the terminal.app and apparently this has been happening for a week now, hundreds of instances of no wake reasons.
Could this be a hardware error?

Mine does the same thing. I noticed that he little green/yellow light on the magnetic power adapter would go out every once in a while as well. If I would keep the system closed and unplug then replug it, then it would unsleep/sleep whenever it was connected. I switched power adapters with my other MBP and it behaves normally now. ymmv

I think I finished installing Mountain Lion, and am at the "log in" page with the Mountain Lion icon, but I cannot do any of the functions on screen. That is, I cannot log in, sleep, restart, or shut down. I am running it on an Early 2009 Macbook Pro, which is said to have the capabilities of running Mountain Lion.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • X200 hangs during restart or shut down when connected to ultrabase

My X200 hangs during a Windows restart or shut down when I'm connected to my ultrabase.  The laptop appears to go through most of the processes to restart/shut down but eventually hangs at a blue screen with unmoveable cursor (note, not a Windows BSOD). I'm forced to perform a hard shut down to turn off the laptop.
This hang at restart/shut down only occurs when I'm connected to the ultrabase.

Just as a thing to try, and this is assuming that you all have an integrated camera, please try this camera driver and let the board know the results:

  • Kernel Panic when Shutting down or Restarting.

About every second time i click restart, or shut-down, my computer immediately receives a kernel panic message saying i must restart my computer, please hold down... This has been happening for the past couple months. I have looked through my applications, there is nothing fishy that i installed; I tried repairing disk permissions, that didn't help either. I've also reinstalled Snow leopard on my machine once, and the problem reappeared... any advice?

I am having similar issues. I have a MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz with 4GB of ram and it was working great until I installed the Pro Tools 8.03 Version that should work with my Snow Leopard. The computer seems to work fine while I am using it even Pro Tools and Logic 9. However, ever time I go to shut the computer down it has a panic and displays a multi-language message to press and hold down the power button to restart the computer. I have tried resetting the pram and uninstalling pro tools yet that does not solve the problem. "Help me if you can I'm feeling down". When I restart the computer the report is as follows.

Sounds like a major hardware problem.
If no change after restoring your iPhone as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, there is a hardware problem.

Did you try to press and hold the home and sleep button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting the device.
If this does not work, try connecting in recovery mode, explained in this article:

To prevent application windows (not Finder windows) from reopening on restart, simply close all open applications, then use the Get Info dialog "Locked" checkbox to lock this plist (not the lockfile by the same name),
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist
where "~" is your home folder, and "*" is a string of characters (12 in my case). This plist is where the System stores "reopen windows" info, so the System can't change/delete it if it is locked. Works fine for me and others.

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • OS 10.4.6 won't restart or shut down

I installed 10.4.6 on my powerbook g4 that was running 10.3.9 without a problem. Big mistake.
I repaired permissions, then custom installed 10.4.6 skipping the foreign language fonts and printer drivers I don't need.
Installation was successful. Set up assistant started up but I skipped it because I had no connection to the net when I installed.
I got my desktop, everything looked fine but the computer would not restart or shut down. Force quit was not a option.
The only way to shut down the computer was to hold down the power button.
I started up the computer, repaired permissions with DU and then put it through Cocktail. No indicated problem until Cocktail tried to restart. It didn't work.
I restarted with shift-safe boot, but the problem remained. My formerly reliable PBg4 will not restart or shut down with this new OS 10.4x
    Any suggetions? Thanks.

    Steve:
My formerly reliable PBg4 will not restart or shut down with this new OS 10.4x
It is not Tiger that's causing the problem. Tiger will run fine on your PBook. It's because you short-circuited the process. Next time around, go through the setup and when it comes to registering with Apple, click later. As baltwo said, if you don't have a backup you will need to re-install.
    Good luck.

  • MacMini Hangs When Shutting Down

    Hi all.
I've tried looking up the answers to this but I have a slightly different issue from others who had issues when shutting down.
This started a few months ago.  What happens is when I click to shut down the computer, everything starts closing out.  The top menu bar disappears but then nothing else happens.  I'm basically looking at my wallpaper with nothing on it but my dock will still be up.  When I look on my dock the only thing that appears to be active is the "Finder" folder.  When I click on it nothing happens, however, if I right click it says that the application is not responding and gives me the option to relaunch, but nothing happens.  So it seems like there's something going on with the "Finder" folder that is preventing it from shutting down.
For what it's worth, I did run "Verify Disk" from Disk Utilities that said everything came back okay.  I unplugged any external devices hooked up via USB like my USB hub to see if there was something going on there.
    I have a 2012 Mac Mini.
In the past, I have let it go all night to see if it would eventually shut down and it won't.  I have to force shut it down.  Ideally, I don't want to do this.  Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks!

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Minis spin at restart or shut down

I have 3 minis that just spin when you hit restart or shut down. You have to hard reboot... the old firmware update I found is not needed on that computer according to the computer. Running 10.4.11 on all. Any ideas?

Are these Intel Minis, or the older PPC G4 Minis?
What is the history of these particular Minis and how are they being used?
